BiCANet: Bi-directional Contextual Aggregating Network for Image Semantic Segmentation

Exploring contextual information in convolution neural networks (CNNs) has gained substantial attention in recent years for semantic segmentation. This paper introduces a Bi-directional Contextual Aggregating Network, called BiCANet, for semantic segmentation. Unlike previous approaches that encode context in feature space, BiCANet aggregates contextual cues from a categorical perspective, which is mainly consist of three parts: contextual condensed projection block (CCPB), bi-directional context interaction block (BCIB), and muti-scale contextual fusion block (MCFB). More specifically, CCPB learns a category-based mapping through a split-transform-merge architecture, which condenses contextual cues with different receptive fields from intermediate layer. BCIB, on the other hand, employs dense skipped-connections to enhance the class-level context exchanging. Finally, MCFB integrates multi-scale contextual cues by investigating short- and long-ranged spatial dependencies. To evaluate BiCANet, we have conducted extensive experiments on three semantic segmentation datasets: PASCAL VOC 2012, Cityscapes, and ADE20K. The experimental results demonstrate that BiCANet outperforms recent state-of-the-art networks without any postprocess techniques. Particularly, BiCANet achieves the mIoU score of 86.7%, 82.4% and 38.66% on PASCAL VOC 2012, Cityscapes and ADE20K testset, respectively.

Outage Analysis of Multi-Relay Selection for Cognitive Radio with Imperfect Spectrum Sensing

In this paper, we examine the outage performance of a cognitive relay network, which is comprised of a secondary transmitter (ST), multiple decode-and-forward (DF) relays and a secondary destination (SD). We propose a multi-relay selection scheme for the cognitive relay network, where multiple relays are selected and used to participate in forwarding the secondary transmission from ST to SD. A closed-form expression of the outage probability for the proposed multi-relay selection under imperfect spectrum sensing is derived in Rayleigh fading environments. For comparison purposes, the conventional direct transmission and the best-relay selection are also considered as benchmarks. Numerical results show that as the spectrum sensing performance improves with an increasing detection probability and/or a decreasing false alarm probability, the outage probabilities of the proposed multi-relay selection as well as the direct transmission and the best-relay selection schemes all decrease accordingly. It is also demonstrated that the proposed multi-relay selection significantly outperforms the conventional approaches in terms of the outage probability.

Turbulence Mitigation Scheme for Optical Communications using Orbital Angular Momentum Multiplexing Based on Channel Coding and Wavefront Correction

The free-space optical (FSO) communication links with orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing have been demonstrated that they can largely enhance the systems' capacity without a corresponding increase in spectral bandwidth, but the performance of the system is unavoidably disturbed by atmospheric turbulence (AT). Different from the existed AT disturbance, the OAM-multiplexed systems will cause both the burst and random errors for a single OAM state carrier and the `crosstalk' interference between the different OAM states carriers. In this paper, we propose a turbulence mitigation method to improve AT tolerance of OAM-multiplexed FSO communication links. In the proposed scheme, we use channel codes to correct the burst and random errors caused by AT for a single OAM state carrier; And we use wavefront correction method to correct the `crosstalk' interference between the different OAM states carriers. The improvements of AT tolerance are discussed by comparing the performance of OAM-multiplexed FSO communication links with or without channel coding or Shark-Hartmann wavefront correction method. The numerical simulation results show that the OAM-multiplexed FSO communication links have enhanced their AT tolerance. The usage of channel codes and wavefront correction methods together has improved greatly the performance of OAM-multiplexed FSO communication links over atmospheric turbulence.

A Fully Distributed Opportunistic Network Coding Scheme for Cellular Relay Networks

In this paper, we propose an opportunistic network coding (ONC) scheme in cellular relay networks, which operates depending on whether the relay decodes source messages successfully or not. A fully distributed method is presented to implement the proposed opportunistic network coding scheme without the need of any feedback between two network nodes. We consider the use of proposed ONC for cellular downlink transmissions and derive its closed-form outage probability expression considering cochannel interference in a Rayleigh fading environment. Numerical results show that the proposed ONC scheme outperforms the traditional non-cooperation in terms of outage probability. We also develop the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of proposed ONC and show that the ONC scheme obtains the full diversity and an increased multiplexing gain as compared with the conventional cooperation protocols.

Energy Efficiency of Network Cooperation for Cellular Uplink Transmissions

There is a growing interest in energy efficient or so-called "green" wireless communication to reduce the energy consumption in cellular networks. Since today's wireless terminals are typically equipped with multiple network access interfaces such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular networks, this paper investigates user terminals cooperating with each other in transmitting their data packets to a base station (BS) by exploiting the multiple network access interfaces, referred to as inter-network cooperation, to improve the energy efficiency in cellular uplink transmission. Given target outage probability and data rate requirements, we develop a closed-form expression of energy efficiency in Bits-per-Joule for the inter-network cooperation by taking into account the path loss, fading, and thermal noise effects. Numerical results show that when the cooperating users move towards to each other, the proposed inter-network cooperation significantly improves the energy efficiency as compared with the traditional non-cooperation and intra-network cooperation. This implies that given a certain amount of bits to be transmitted, the inter-network cooperation requires less energy than the traditional non-cooperation and intra-network cooperation, showing the energy saving benefit of inter-network cooperation.

Experimental realization of large-alphabet quantum key distribution protocol using orbital angular momentum entanglement

We experimentally demonstrate a quantum key distribution (QKD) protocol using photon pairs entangled in orbit angular momentum (OAM). In our protocol, Alice and Bob modulate their OAM states on each entangled pair with spatial light modulators (SLMs), respectively. Alice uses a fixed phase hologram in her SLM, while Bob designs $N$ different suitable phase holograms and uses them to represent his $N$-based information in his SLM. With coincidences, Alice can fully retrieve the key stream sent by Bob without information reconciliation or privacy amplification. We report the experiment results with N=3 and the sector states with OAM eigenmodes l=1 and l=-1. Our experiment shows that the coincidence rates are in relatively distinct value regions for the three different key elements. Alice could recover fully Bob's keys by the protocol. Finally, we discuss the security of the protocol both form the light way and against the general attacks.
