General rogue wave solutions to the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In the present paper, we attempt to construct both the general rogue wave solutions to the fully discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (fd-NLS) equation via the KP-Toda reduction method. First, we deduce the general breather solution of the fd-NLS equation starting from a pair of bilinear equations. We then derive the general rogue wave solution by taking a limit to the breather solution.

General rogue wave solutions to the Sasa-Satsuma equation

General rogue wave solutions to the Sasa-Satsuma equation are constructed by the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method. These solutions are presented in three different forms. The first form is expressed in terms of recursively defined differential operators while the second form shares a similar solution structure except that the differential operators are no longer recursively defined. Instead of using differential operators, the third form is expressed by Schur polynomials.

Rogue waves in the massive Thirring model

In this paper, general rogue wave solutions in the massive Thirring (MT) model are derived by using the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method and these rational solutions are presented explicitly in terms of determinants whose matrix elements are elementary Schur polynomials. In the reduction process, three reduction conditions including one index- and two dimension-ones are proved to be consistent by only one constraint relation on parameters of tau-functions of the KP-Toda hierarchy. It is found that the rogue wave solutions in the MT model depend on two background parameters, which influence their orientation and duration. Differing from many other coupled integrable systems, the MT model only admits the rogue waves of bright-type, and the higher-order rogue waves represent the superposition of fundamental ones in which the non-reducible parameters determine the arrangement patterns of fundamental rogue waves. Particularly, the super rogue wave at each order can be achieved simply by setting all internal parameters to be zero, resulting in the amplitude of the sole huge peak of order $N$ being $2N+1$ times the background. Finally, rogue wave patterns are discussed when one of the internal parameters is large. Similar to other integrable equations, the patterns are shown to be associated with the root structures of the Yablonskii-Vorob'ev polynomial hierarchy through a linear transformation.

Darboux transformation and solitonic solution to the coupled complex short pulse equation

The Darboux transformation (DT) for the coupled complex short pulse (CCSP) equation is constructed through the loop group method. The DT is then utilized to construct various exact solutions including bright soliton, dark-soliton, breather and rogue wave solutions to the CCSP equation. In case of vanishing boundary condition (VBC), we perform the inverse scattering analysis to understand the soliton solution better. Breather and rogue wave solutions are constructed in case of non-vanishing boundary condition (NVBC). Moreover, we conduct a modulational instability (MI) analysis based on the method of squared eigenfunctions, whose result confirms the condition for the existence of rogue wave solution.

Multi-breather solutions to the Sasa-Satsuma equation

General breather solution to the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) equation is systematically investigated in this paper. We firstly transform the SS equation into a set of three Hirota bilinear equations under proper plane wave background. Starting from a specially arranged tau-function of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and a set of eleven bilinear equations satisfied, we implement a series steps of reduction procedure, i.e., C-type reduction, dimension reduction and complex conjugate reduction, and reduce these eleven equations to three bilinear equations for the SS equation. Meanwhile, general breather solution to the SS equation is found in determinant of even order. The one- and two-breather solutions are calculated and analyzed in details.

A defocusing complex short pulse equation and its multi-dark soliton solution by Darboux transformation

In this paper, we propose a complex short pulse equation of both focusing and defocusing types, which governs the propagation of ultra-short pulses in nonlinear optical fibers. It can be viewed as an analogue of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation in the ultra-short pulse regime. Furthermore, we construct the multi-dark soliton solution for the defocusing complex short pulse equation through the Darboux transformation and reciprocal (hodograph) transformation. One- and two-dark soliton solutions are given explicitly, whose properties and dynamics are analyzed and illustrated.

General soliton solutions to a coupled Fokas-Lenells equation

In this paper, we firstly establish the multi-Hamiltonian structure and infinite many conservation laws for the vector Kaup-Newell hierarchy of the positive and negative orders. The first nontrivial negative flow corresponds to a coupled Fokas-Lenells equation. By constructing a generalized Darboux transformation and using a limiting process, all kinds of one-soliton solutions are constructed including the bright-dark soliton, the dark-anti-dark soliton and the breather-like solutions. Furthermore, multi-bright and multi-dark soliton solutions are derived and their asymptotic behaviors are investigated.

Geometric formulation and multi-dark soliton solution to the defocusinig complex short pulse equation

In the present paper, we study the defocusing complex short pulse (CSP) equations both geometrically and algebraically. From the geometric point of view, we establish a link of the complex coupled dispersionless (CCD) system with the motion of space curves in Minkowski space $\mathbf{R}^{2,1}$, then with the defocusing CSP equation via a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation, the Lax pair is constructed naturally for the defocusing CSP equation. We also show that the CCD system of both the focusing and defocusing types can be derived from the fundamental forms of surfaces such that their curve flows are formulated. In the second part of the paper, we derive the the defocusing CSP equation from the single-component extended KP hierarchy by the reduction method. As a by-product, the $N$-dark soliton solution for the defocusing CSP equation in the form of determinants for these equations is provided.

An integrable semi-discrete Degasperis-Procesi equation

Based on our previous work to the Degasperis-Procesi equation (J. Phys. A 46 045205) and the integrable semi-discrete analogue of its short wave limit (J. Phys. A 48 135203), we derive an integrable semi-discrete Degasperis-Procesi equation by Hirota's bilinear method. Meanwhile, $N$-soliton solution to the semi-discrete Degasperis-Procesi equation is provided and proved. It is shown that the proposed semi-discrete Degasperis-Procesi equation, along with its $N$-soliton solution converge to ones of the original Degasperis-Procesi equation in the continuous limit.

An integrable semi-discretization of the coupled Yajima--Oikawa system

In the present paper, an integrable semi-discrete analogue of the one-dimensional coupled Yajima--Oikawa system, which is comprised of multicomponent short-wave and one component long-wave, is proposed by using Hirota's bilinear method. Based on the reductions of the Bäcklund transformations of the semi-discrete BKP hierarchy, both the bright and dark soliton (for the short-wave components) solutions in terms of pfaffians are constructed.

Complex short pulse and coupled complex short pulse equations

In the present paper, we propose a complex short pulse equation and a coupled complex short equation to describe ultra-short pulse propagation in optical fibers. They are shown to be integrable due to the existence of Lax pairs and infinite number of conservation laws. Furthermore, we construct their multi-soliton solutions in terms of pfaffians by virtue of Hirota bilinear method. One- and two-soliton solutions are investigated in details, showing favorable properties in modeling ultra-short pulses with a few optical cycles. Especially, same as the coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equation, interactions between two solitons are basically inelastic, which deserve further study and has potential applications.

General Mixed Multi-Soliton Solutions to One-Dimensional Multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa System

In this paper, we derive a general mixed (bright-dark) multi-soliton solution to a one-dimensional multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa (YO) system, i.e., the (M+1)-component YO system comprised of M-component short waves (SWs) and one-component long wave (LW) for all possible combinations of nonlinearity coefficients including positive, negative and mixed types. With the help of the KP-hierarchy reduction method, we firstly construct two types of general mixed N-soliton solution (two-bright-one-dark soliton and one-bright-two-dark one for SW components) to the (3+1)-component YO system in detail. Then by extending the corresponding analysis to the (M+1)-component YO system, a general mixed N-soliton solution in Gram determinant form is obtained. The expression of the mixed soliton solution also contains the general all bright and all dark N-soliton solution as special cases. Besides, the dynamical analysis shows that the inelastic collision can only take place among SW components when at least two SW components have bright solitons in mixed type soliton solution. Whereas, the dark solitons in SW components and the bright soliton in LW component always undergo usual elastic collision.

Integrable discretizations and self-adaptive moving mesh method for a coupled short pulse equation

In the present paper, integrable semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of a coupled short pulse (CSP) equation are constructed. The key of the construction is the bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the CSP equation. We also construct Nsoliton solutions for the semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of the CSP equations in the form of Casorati determinant. In the continuous limit, we show that the fully discrete CSP equation converges to the semi-discrete CSP equation, then further to the continuous CSP equation. Moreover, the integrable semi-discretization of the CSP equation is used as a selfadaptive moving mesh method for numerical simulations. The numerical results agree with the analytical results very well.

Integrable semi-discretization of a multi-component short pulse equation

In the present paper, we mainly study the integrable semi-discretization of a multi-component short pulse equation. Firstly, we briefly review the bilinear equations for a multi-component short pulse equation proposed by Matsuno (J. Math. Phys. \textbf{52} 123705) and reaffirm its $N$-soliton solution in terms of pfaffians. Then by using a Bäcklund transformation of the bilinear equations and defining a discrete hodograph (reciprocal) transformation, an integrable semi-discrete multi-component short pulse equation is constructed. Meanwhile, its $N$-soliton solution in terms of pfaffians is also proved.

Integrable semi-discretizations of the reduced Ostrovsky equation

Based on our previous work to the reduced Ostrovsky equation (J. Phys. A 45 355203), we construct its integrable semi-discretizations. Since the reduced Ostrovsky equation admits two alternative representations, one is its original form, the other is the differentiation form, or the short wave limit of the Degasperis-Procesi equation, two semi- discrete analogues of the reduced Ostrovsky equation are constructed possessing the same N-loop soliton solution. The relationship between these two versions of semi-discretizations is also clarified.

Multi-dark soliton solutions of the two-dimensional multi-component Yajima-Oikawa systems

We present a general form of multi-dark soliton solutions of two-dimensional multi-component soliton systems. Multi-dark soliton solutions of the two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) multi-component Yajima-Oikawa (YO) systems, which are often called the 2D and 1D multi-component long wave-short wave resonance interaction systems, are studied in detail. Taking the 2D coupled YO system with two short wave and one long wave components as an example, we derive the general $N$-dark-dark soliton solution in both the Gram type and Wronski type determinant forms for the 2D coupled YO system via the KP hierarchy reduction method. By imposing certain constraint conditions, the general $N$-dark-dark soliton solution of the 1D coupled YO system is further obtained. The dynamics of one dark-dark and two dark-dark solitons are analyzed in detail. In contrast with bright-bright soliton collisions, it is shown that dark-dark soliton collisions are elastic and there is no energy exchange among solitons in different components. Moreover, the dark-dark soliton bound states including the stationary and moving ones are discussed. For the stationary case, the bound states exist up to arbitrary order, whereas, for the moving case, only the two-soliton bound state is possible under the condition that the coefficients of nonlinear terms have opposite signs.

Multi-soliton solution to the two-component Hunter-Saxton equation

In this paper, we study the bilinear form and the general N-soliton solution for a two-component Hunter-Saxton (2-HS) equation, which is the short wave limit of a twocomponent Camassa-Holm equation. By defining a hodograph transformation based on a conservation law and appropriate dependent variable transformations, we propose a set of bilinear equations which yields the 2-HS equation. Furthermore, we construct the N-soliton solution to the 2-HS equation based on the tau functions of an extended two-dimensional Toda-lattice hierarchy through reductions. One- and two-soliton solutions are calculated and analyzed.

Multi-soliton, multi-breather and higher-order rogue wave solutions to the complex short pulse equation

In the present paper, we are concerned with the general localized solutions for the complex short pulse equation including soliton, breather and rogue wave solutions. With the aid of a generalized Darboux transformation, we construct the $N$-bright soliton solution in a compact determinant form, then the $N$-breather solution including the Akhmediev breather and a general higher order rogue wave solution. The first- and second-order rogue wave solutions are given explicitly and illustrated by graphs. The asymptotic analysis is performed rigorously for both the $N$-soliton and the $N$-breather solutions. All three forms of the localized solutions admit either smoothed-, cusped- or looped-type ones for the CSP equation depending on the parameters. It is noted that, due to the reciprocal (hodograph) transformation, the rogue wave solution to the CSP equation is different from the one to the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, which could be a cusponed- or a looped one.

Rational solutions to multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa systems: from two dimension to one dimension

Exact explicit rational solutions of two- and one- dimensional multicomponent Yajima-Oikawa (YO) systems, which contain multi-short-wave components and single long-wave one, are presented by using the bilinear method. For two-dimensional system, the fundamental rational solution first describes the localized lumps, which have three different patterns: bright, intermediate and dark states. Then, rogue waves can be obtained under certain parameter conditions and their behaviors are also classified to above three patterns with different definition. It is shown that the simplest (fundamental) rogue waves are line localized waves which arise from the constant background with a line profile and then disappear into the constant background again. In particular, two-dimensional intermediate and dark counterparts of rogue wave are found with the different parameter requirements. We demonstrate that multirogue waves describe the interaction of several fundamental rogue waves, in which interesting curvy wave patterns appear in the intermediate times. Different curvy wave patterns form in the interaction of different types fundamental rogue waves. Higher-order rogue waves exhibit the dynamic behaviors that the wave structures start from lump and then retreats back to it, and this transient wave possesses the patterns such as parabolas. Furthermore, different states of higher-order rogue wave result in completely distinguishing lumps and parabolas. Moreover, one-dimensional rogue wave solutions with three states are constructed through the further reduction. Specifically, higher-order rogue wave in one dimensional case is derived under the parameter constraints.

Self-adaptive moving mesh schemes for short pulse type equations and their Lax pairs

Integrable self-adaptive moving mesh schemes for short pulse type equations (the short pulse equation, the coupled short pulse equation, and the complex short pulse equation) are investigated. Two systematic methods, one is based on bilinear equations and another is based on Lax pairs, are shown. Self-adaptive moving mesh schemes consist of two semi-discrete equations in which the time is continuous and the space is discrete. In self-adaptive moving mesh schemes, one of two equations is an evolution equation of mesh intervals which is deeply related to a discrete analogue of a reciprocal (hodograph) transformation. An evolution equations of mesh intervals is a discrete analogue of a conservation law of an original equation, and a set of mesh intervals corresponds to a conserved density which play an important role in generation of adaptive moving mesh. Lax pairs of self-adaptive moving mesh schemes for short pulse type equations are obtained by discretization of Lax pairs of short pulse type equations, thus the existence of Lax pairs guarantees the integrability of self-adaptive moving mesh schemes for short pulse type equations. It is also shown that self-adaptive moving mesh schemes for short pulse type equations provide good numerical results by using standard time-marching methods such as the improved Euler's method.

On the $τ$-functions of the reduced Ostrovsky equation and the $A_2^{(2)}$ two-dimensional Toda system

The reciprocal link between the reduced Ostrovsky equation and the $A_2^{(2)}$ two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the $N$-soliton solution of the reduced Ostrovsky equation. The $N$-soliton solution of the reduced Ostrovsky equation is presented in the form of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear equations and the $τ$-function of the reduced Ostrovsky equation are obtained from the period 3-reduction of the $B_{\infty}$ or $C_{\infty}$ two-dimensional Toda system, i.e., the $A_2^{(2)}$ two-dimensional Toda system. One of $τ$-functions of the $A_2^{(2)}$ two-dimensional Toda system becomes the square of a pfaffian which also become a solution of the reduced Ostrovsky equation. There is another bilinear equation which is a member of the 3-reduced extended BKP hierarchy. Using this bilinear equation, we can also construct the same pfaffian solution.

On the tau-functions of the Degasperis-Procesi equation

The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the $τ$-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ two-dimensional Toda system.

Discrete Integrable Systems and Hodograph Transformations Arising from Motions of Discrete Plane Curves

We consider integrable discretizations of some soliton equations associated with the motions of plane curves: the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa elastic beam equation, the complex Dym equation, and the short pulse equation. They are related to the modified KdV or the sine-Gordon equations by the hodograph transformations. Based on the observation that the hodograph transformations are regarded as the Euler-Lagrange transformations of the curve motions, we construct the discrete analogues of the hodograph transformations, which yield integrable discretizations of those soliton equations.

A self-adaptive mesh method for the Camassa-Holm equation

A self-adaptive moving mesh method is proposed for the numerical simulations of the Camassa-Holm equation. It is an integrable scheme in the sense that it possesses the exact N-soliton solution. It is named a self-adaptive moving mesh method, because the non-uniform mesh is driven and adapted automatically by the solution. Once the non-uniform mesh is evolved, the solution is determined by solving a tridiagonal linear system. Due to these two superior features of the method, several test problems give very satisfactory results even if by using a small number of grid points.

Integrable discretizations for the short wave model of the Camassa-Holm equation

The link between the short wave model of the Camassa-Holm equation (SCHE) and bilinear equations of the two-dimensional Toda lattice (2DTL) is clarified. The parametric form of N-cuspon solution of the SCHE in Casorati determinant is then given. Based on the above finding, integrable semi-discrete and full-discrete analogues of the SCHE are constructed. The determinant solutions of both semi-discrete and fully discrete analogues of the SCHE are also presented.

Max-plus analysis on some binary particle systems

We concern with a special class of binary cellular automata, i.e., the so-called particle cellular automata (PCA) in the present paper. We first propose max-plus expressions to PCA of 4 neighbors. Then, by utilizing basic operations of the max-plus algebra and appropriate transformations, PCA4-1, 4-2 and 4-3 are solved exactly and their general solutions are found in terms of max-plus expressions. Finally, we analyze the asymptotic behaviors of general solutions and prove the fundamental diagrams exactly.

Integrable discretizations of the short pulse equation

In the present paper, we propose integrable semi-discrete and full-discrete analogues of the short pulse (SP) equation. The key of the construction is the bilinear forms and determinant structure of solutions of the SP equation. We also give the determinant formulas of N-soliton solutions of the semi-discrete and full-discrete analogues of the SP equations, from which the multi-loop and multi-breather solutions can be generated. In the continuous limit, the full-discrete SP equation converges to the semi-discrete SP equation, then to the continuous SP equation. Based on the semi-discrete SP equation, an integrable numerical scheme, i.e., a self-adaptive moving mesh scheme, is proposed and used for the numerical computation of the short pulse equation.
