Enhancement of the Hall-Lorenz number in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O_7-d

Electronic heat transport in the normal state of a high-quality single crystal of optimally-doped superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.95 was studied by measurements of longitudinal and transverse transport coefficients. For the temperature range from 100 to 300 K, the Hall-Lorenz number (Lxy) depends weakly on temperature and is about two times larger than the Sommerfeld value of the Lorenz number Lo = (pi^2)/3. Our results can be interpreted using a Fermi liquid model when effects of the pseudogap that opens at the Fermi level are included. However, we find that the bipolaron model can also explain both the enhanced value and the weak temperature dependence of the Hall-Lorenz number.

Vortex dynamics differences in YBaCuO at low temperatures for H||ab planes due to twin boundary pinning anysotropy

We measured magnetization, M, of a twin-aligned single crystal of YBa2Cu 3Ox (YBaCuO), with Tc = 91 K, as a function of temperature, T, and magnetic field, H, with H applied along the ab planes. Isothermal M-vs.-H and M-vs.-time curves were obtained with H applied parallel and perpendicular to the twin boundary, TB, direction. M-vs.-H curves exhibited two minimums below 38 K, which resembled similar curves that have been obtained in YBaCuO for H parallel to c axis. Above 12 K, the field positions of the minimums for H||TB and HperpTB were quite similar. Below 12 K, the position of the second minimum, Hmin, occurred at a higher field value with H||TB. Below 6 K, only one minimum appeared for both field directions. At low temperatures, these minimums in the M-vs.-H curves produced maximums in the critical current. It was determined that vortex lines were expelled more easily for H||TB than for HperpTB, and, therefore, below a certain field value, that Jc(HperpTB) was larger than Jc(H||TB) . At T<12 K with H||TB, the relaxation rate for flux lines leaving the crystal was found to be different from that for flux entering the crystal. We also observed flux jumps at low temperatures, with their sizes depending on the orientation of magnetic field with respect to the TBs.

X-Ray-Diffraction Study of Charge-Density-Waves and Oxygen-Ordering in YBa2Cu3O6+x Superconductor

We report a temperature-dependent increase below 300 K of diffuse superlattice peaks corresponding to q_0 =(~2/5,0,0) in an under-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x superconductor (x~0.63). These peaks reveal strong c-axis correlations involving the CuO_2 bilayers, show a non-uniform increase below \~220 K with a plateau for ~100-160 K, and appear to saturate in the superconducting phase. We interpret this unconventional T-dependence of the ``oxygen-ordering'' peaks as a manifestation of a charge density wave in the CuO_2 planes coupled to the oxygen-vacancy ordering.

Relationship Between Conductivity and Phase Coherence Length in Cuprates

The large ($10^2 - 10^5$) and strongly temperature dependent resistive anisotropy $η= (σ_{ab}/σ_c)^{1/2}$ of cuprates perhaps holds the key to understanding their normal state in-plane $σ_{ab}$ and out-of-plane $σ_{c}$ conductivities. It can be shown that $η$ is determined by the ratio of the phase coherence lengths $\ell_i$ in the respective directions: $σ_{ab}/σ_c = \ell_{ab}^2/\ell_{c}^2$. In layered crystals in which the out-of-plane transport is incoherent, $\ell_{c}$ is fixed, equal to the interlayer spacing. As a result, the T-dependence of $η$ is determined by that of $\ell_{ab}$, and vice versa, the in-plane phase coherence length can be obtained directly by measuring the resistive anisotropy. We present data for hole-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_y$ ($6.3 < y < 6.9$) and $Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$ ($0 < x \leq 0.55$) and show that $σ_{ab}$ of crystals with different doping levels can be well described by a two parameter universal function of the in-plane phase coherence length. In the electron-doped $Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4-y}$, the dependence $σ_{ab}(η)$ indicates a crossover from incoherent to coherent transport in the c-direction.
