Dipolar spin-waves and tunable band gap at the Dirac points in the 2D magnet ErBr3

Topological magnon insulators constitute a growing field of research for their potential use as information carriers without heat dissipation. We report an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic ground-state and excitations in the van der Waals two-dimensional honeycomb magnet ErBr3. We show that the magnetic properties of this compound are entirely governed by the dipolar interactions which generate a continuously degenerate non-collinear ground-state on the honeycomb lattice with spins confined in the plane. We find that the magnon dispersion exhibits Dirac-like cones when the magnetic moments in the ground-state are related by time-reversal and inversion symmetries associated with a Berry phase πas in single-layer graphene. A magnon band gap opens when the dipoles are rotated away from this state, entailing a finite Berry curvature in the vicinity of the K and K' Dirac points. Our results illustrate that the spin-wave dispersion of dipoles on the honeycomb lattice can be reversibly controlled from a magnetic phase with Dirac cones to a topological antiferromagnetic insulator with non-trivial valley Chern number.

Spin Density Wave versus Fractional Magnetization Plateau in a Triangular Antiferromagnet

We report an excellent realization of the highly non-classical incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) state in the quantum frustrated antiferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$CoBr$_4$. In contrast to the well-known Ising spin chain case, here the SDW is stabilized by virtue of competing planar in-chain anisotropies and frustrated interchain exchange. Adjacent to the SDW phase is a broad $m = 1/3$ magnetization plateau that can be seen as a commensurate locking of the SDW state into the up-up-down (UUD) spin structure. This represents the first example of long-sought SDW-UUD transition in triangular-type quantum magnets.

Broadband critical dynamics in disordered lead-based perovskites

Materials based on the cubic perovskite unit cell continue to provide the basis for technologically important materials with two notable recent examples being lead-based relaxor piezoelectrics and lead-based organic-inorganic halide photovoltaics. These materials carry considerable disorder, arising from site substitution in relaxors and molecular vibrations in the organic-inorganics, yet much of our understanding of these systems derives from the initial classic work of Prof. Roger A. Cowley, who applied both theory and neutron scattering methods while at Chalk River Laboratories to the study of lattice vibrations in SrTiO$_{3}$. Neutron scattering continues to play a vital role in characterizing lattice vibrations in perovskites owing to the simple cross section and the wide range of energy resolutions achievable with current neutron instrumentation. We discuss the dynamics that drive the phase transitions in the relaxors and organic-inorganic lead-halides in terms of neutron scattering and compare them to those in phase transitions associated with a ``central peak" and also a soft mode. We review some of the past experimental work on these materials and present new data from high-resolution time-of-flight backscattering spectroscopy taken on organic-inorganic perovskites. We will show that the structural transitions in disordered lead-based perovskites are driven by a broad frequency band of excitations.

Dual nature of magnetism in MnSi

The temperature dependence of the manganese magnetic moment and the spin-lattice relaxation rate measured by the muon spin relaxation technique in the magnetically ordered phase of the chiral intermetallic cubic MnSi system are both explained in terms of helimagnon excitations of a localized spin model. The two free parameters characterizing the helimagnon dispersion relation are determined. A combined analysis of the two data sets cannot be achieved using the self-consistent renormalization theory of spin fluctuations which assumes the magnetism of MnSi to arise uniquely from electronic bands. As a result of this work, MnSi is proposed to be a dual electronic system composed of localized and itinerant magnetic electrons. Finally we note that the analysis framework can be applied to other helimagnets such as the magnetoelectric compound Cu2OSeO3.

A novel type of splayed ferromagnetic order observed in Yb2Ti2O7

The pyrochlore insulator Yb2Ti2O7 has attracted the attention of experimentalists and theoreticians alike for about 15 years. Conflicting neutron diffraction data on the possible existence of magnetic Bragg reflections at low temperature have been published. Here we report the observation of magnetic Bragg reflections by neutron powder diffraction at 60 mK. The magnetic diffraction pattern is analyzed using representation theory. We find Yb2Ti2O7 to be a splayed ferromagnet as reported for Yb2Sn2O7, a sibling compound with also dominating ferromagnetic interactions as inferred from the positive Curie-Weiss temperature. However, the configuration of the magnetic moment components perpendicular to the easy axis is of the all-in--all-out type in Yb2Ti2O7 while it is two-in--two-out in Yb2Sn2O7. An overall experimental picture of the magnetic properties emerges.

Determination of the zero-field magnetic structure of the helimagnet MnSi at low temperature

Below a temperature of approximately 29 K the manganese magnetic moments of the cubic binary compound MnSi order to a long-range incommensurate helical magnetic structure. Here, we quantitatively analyze a high-statistic zero-field muon spin rotation spectrum recorded in the magnetically ordered phase of MnSi by exploiting the result of representation theory as applied to the determination of magnetic structures. Instead of a gradual rotation of the magnetic moments when moving along a <111> axis, we find that the angle of rotation between the moments of certain subsequent planes is essentially quenched. It is the magnetization of pairs of planes which rotates when moving along a <111> axis, thus preserving the overall helical structure.

Jahn-Teller versus quantum effects in the spin-orbital material LuVO3

We report on combined neutron and resonant x-ray scattering results, identifying the nature of the spin-orbital ground state and magnetic excitations in LuVO3 as driven by the orbital parameter. In particular, we distinguish between models based on orbital Peierls dimerization, taken as a signature of quantum effects in orbitals, and Jahn-Teller distortions, in favor of the latter. In order to solve this long-standing puzzle, polarized neutron beams were employed as a prerequisite in order to solve details of the magnetic structure, which allowed quantitative intensity-analysis of extended magnetic excitation data sets. The results of this detailed study enabled us to draw definite conclusions about classical vs quantum behavior of orbitals in this system and to discard the previous claims about quantum effects dominating the orbital physics of LuVO3 and similar systems.

Low temperature crystal structure and local magnetometry for the geometrically frustrated pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7

We report synchrotron radiation diffraction and muon spin rotation (muSR) measurements on the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Tb2Ti2O7. The powder diffraction study of a crushed crystal fragment does not reveal any structural change down to 4 K. The muSR measurements performed at 20 mK on a mosaic of single crystals with an external magnetic field applied along a three-fold axis are consistent with published a.c. magnetic-susceptibility measurements at 16 mK. While an inflection point could be present around an internal field intensity slightly above 0.3 T, the data barely support the presence of a magnetization plateau.

Magnetoelastic excitations in the pyrochlore spin liquid Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

At low temperatures, Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ enters a spin liquid state, despite expectations of magnetic order and/or a structural distortion. Using neutron scattering, we have discovered that in this spin liquid state an excited crystal field level is coupled to a transverse acoustic phonon, forming a hybrid excitation. Magnetic and phononlike branches with identical dispersion relations can be identified, and the hybridization vanishes in the paramagnetic state. We suggest that Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ is aptly named a "magnetoelastic spin liquid" and that the hybridization of the excitations suppresses both magnetic ordering and the structural distortion. The spin liquid phase of Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ can now be regarded as a Coulomb phase with propagating bosonic spin excitations.

Phase Transition of the Uniaxial Disordered Ferroelectric Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$

We report a neutron scattering study of a ferroelectric phase transition in Sr$_{0.61}$Ba$_{0.39}$Nb$_2$O$_6$ (SBN-61). The ferroelectric polarization is along the crystallographic $c$-axis but the transverse acoustic branch propagating along the $<$1, 1, 0$>$ direction does not show any anomaly associated with the this transition. We find no evidence for a soft transverse optic phonon. We do, however, observe elastic diffuse scattering. The intensity of this scattering increases as the sample is cooled from a temperature well above the phase transition. The susceptibility associated with this diffuse scattering follows well the anomaly of the dielectric permittivity of SBN-61. Below T$_\mathrm{c}$ the shape of this scattering is consistent with the scattering expected from ferroelectric domain walls. Our results suggest that despite apparent chemical disorder SBN-61 behaves as a classic order-disorder uniaxial ferroelectric with critical fluctuations in the range $<10^{-11}$ s.

Coupling of magnetic and ferroelectric hysteresis by a multi-component magnetic structure in Mn2GeO4

The olivine compound Mn2GeO4 is shown to feature both a ferroelectric polarization and a ferromagnetic magnetization that are directly coupled and point along the same direction. We show that a spin spiral generates ferroelectricity (FE), and a canted commensurate order leads to weak ferromagnetism (FM). Symmetry suggests that the direct coupling between the FM and FE is mediated by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions that exist only in the ferroelectric phase, controlling both the sense of the spiral rotation and the canting of the commensurate structure. Our study demonstrates how multi-component magnetic structures found in magnetically-frustrated materials like Mn2GeO4 provide a new route towards functional materials that exhibit coupled FM and FE.

Cube-shape diffuse scattering and the ground state of $\mathrm{BaMg}_{1/3}\mathrm{Ta}_{2/3} \mathrm{O}_3$

A quite unusual diffuse scattering phenomenology was observed in the single-crystal X-ray diffraction pattern of cubic perovskite BMT ($\mathrm{BaMg}_{1/3}\mathrm{Ta}_{2/3}\mathrm{O}_3$). The intensity of the scattering is parametrized as a set of cube-like objects located at the centers of reciprocal space unit cells, resembling very broad and cubic-shaped (1/2,1/2,1/2)-satellites. BMT belongs to perovskites of formula AB$'_{1/3}$B$"_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (A=Mg, B$'=$Ta, B$"=$Mg). The cubes of the intensity can be attributed to the partial correlations of the occupancies of the B site. The pair correlation function is the Fourier transform of the diffuse scattering intensity and the latter's idealized form yields the unusual property of a power-law correlation decay with distance. Up to now this is observed only in a few exotic instances of magnetic order or nematic crystals. Therefore it cannot be classified as a short-range order phenomenon, as in most situations originating diffuse scattering. A Monte-Carlo search in configuration space yielded solutions that reproduce faithfully the observed diffuse scattering. Analysis of the results in terms of the electrostatic energy and the entropy point to this phase of BMT as a metastable state, kinetically locked, which could be the equilibrium state just below the melting point.

Electric field control of chiral magnetic domains in the high-temperature multiferroic CuO

We have studied the high temperature multiferroic cupric oxide using polarized neutron diffraction as a function of temperature and applied electric field. We find that the chiral domain population can be varied using an external electric field applied along the b axis. Using representation analysis we derive the incommensurate magnetic structure in the multiferroic phase. The origin of the magnetoelectric coupling is consistent with models based on the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but is different from the simple cycloidal mechanism.

Pressure induced ferromagnetism in antiferromagnetic Fe_1.03Te

The magnetic properties of Fe1.03Te under hydrostatic pressure up to p ~ 5.7 GPa were investigated by means of muon spin rotation, dc magnetization, and neutron depolarization measurements. With increasing pressure the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature TN decreases continuously from 70 K at ambient pressure towards higher pressures. Surprisingly, the commensurate antiferromagnetic order of FeTe enters a region of incommensurate and dynamical magnetic order before at p ~ 1.7 GPa the system turns ferromagnetic. The ferromagnetic ordering temperature TC increases with increasing pressure.

The Structure and Low-Energy Phonons of the Nonferroelectric Mixed Perovskite: BaMg1/3Ta2/3O3

The structure of BaMg1/3Ta2/3O3 (BMT) has been studied using X-ray scattering. The phonons have been measured and the results are similar to those of other materials with the perovskite structure such as PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN). The acoustic and lowest energy optic branches were measured but it was not possible to measure the branches of higher energy, possibly this is because they largely consist of oxygen motions. High-resolution inelastic measurements also showed that the diffuse scattering was strictly elastic and not directly related to the phonon spectra. A diffuse scattering was observed in BMT near the (H\pm1/2, K\pm1/2, L\pm1/2) points in the Brillouin zone and this had a characteristic cube shape. This arises from ordering of the B-site ions in BMT. Additional experiments revealed a diffuse scattering in BMT similar in shape to Bragg reflections at wave-vectors of the form (H\pm1/3, K\pm1/3, L\pm1/3). Such reflections were also observed by Lufaso [Chem. Matt. 16 (2004) 2148] from powders and suggest that this structure of BMT consists of 4 differently oriented domains of a trigonal structure and results from a different ordering of the B-site ions from that responsible for the scattering at the (H\pm1/2, K\pm1/2, L\pm1/2) points. The results lead us to suggest that for BMT single crystals the bulk has the properties of a cubic perovskite, whereas the surface may have quite different structure from that of the bulk. This difference resembles the behaviour of cubic relaxors like PMN and PMN doped by PbTiO3, where significant surface effects have been reported.

Spin anisotropy of the resonance in superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5

We have used polarized-neutron inelastic scattering to resolve the spin fluctuations in superconducting FeSe0.5Te0.5 into components parallel and perpendicular to the layers. A spin resonance at an energy of 6.5 meV is observed to develop below T_c in both fluctuation components. The resonance peak is anisotropic, with the in-plane component slightly larger than the out-of-plane component. Away from the resonance peak the magnetic fluctuations are isotropic in the energy range studied. The results are consistent with a dominant singlet pairing state with s^{\pm} symmetry, with a possible minority component of different symmetry.

Helimagnon Bands as Universal Spin Excitations of Chiral Magnets

MnSi is a cubic compound with small magnetic anisotropy, which stabilizes a helimagnetic spin spiral that reduces to a ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic state in the long- and short-wavelength limit, respectively. We report a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study of the collective magnetic excitations in the helimagnetic state of MnSi. In our study we observe a rich variety of seemingly anomalous excitation spectra, as measured in well over twenty different locations in reciprocal space. Using a model based on only three parameters, namely the measured pitch of the helix, the measured ferromagnetic spin wave stiffness and the amplitude of the signal, as the only free variable, we can simultaneously account for \textit{all} of the measured spectra in excellent quantitative agreement with experiment. Our study identifies the formation of intense, strongly coupled bands of helimagnons as a universal characteristic of systems with weak chiral interactions.

Magnetic excitations in multiferroic LuMnO3 studied by inelastic neutron scattering

We present data on the magnetic and magneto-elastic coupling in the hexagonal multiferroic manganite LuMnO3 from inelastic neutron scattering, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements. We measured the magnon dispersion along the main symmetry directions and used this data to determine the principal exchange parameters from a spin-wave model. An analysis of the magnetic anisotropy in terms of the crystal field acting on the Mn is presented. We compare the results for LuMnO3 with data on other hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.

Magnetic excitations of Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x} in magnetic and superconductive phases

We have used inelastic neutron scattering and muon-spin rotation to compare the low energy magnetic excitations in single crystals of superconducting Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50 and non-superconducting Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75. We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excitation is also observed in Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75 close to the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector (1/2-δ,0,1/2) where δ\approx 0.03. The magnetic correlations in both samples are found to be quasi-two dimensional in character and persist well above the magnetic (Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75) and superconducting (Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50) transition temperatures.

Single magnetic chirality in the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$

We have performed an extensive study of single-crystals of the magneto-electric NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ by means of a combination of single-crystal neutron diffraction and spherical neutron polarimetry. Our investigation did not detect significant deviations at low temperatures from space group R32 concerning the chemical structure. With respect to magnetic ordering our combined results demonstrate that in the commensurate magnetic phase below T$_N$~30 K all three magnetic Fe moments and the magnetic Nd moment are aligned ferromagnetically in the basal hexagonal plane but align antiferromagnetically between adjacent planes. The phase transition to the low-temperature incommensurate magnetic structure observed at T$_{IC}$~13.5 K appears to be continuous. By means of polarized neutron studies it could be shown that in the incommensurate magnetic phase the magnetic structure of NdFe$_3$($^{11}$BO$_3$)$_4$ is transformed into a long-period antiferromagnetic helix with single chirality. Close to the commensurate-incommensurate phase transition third-order harmonics were observed which in addition indicate the formation of magnetic solitons.

Tuning the superconducting and magnetic properties in Fe_ySe_0.25Te_0.75 by varying the Fe-content

The superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe$_{y}$Se$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$ single crystals ($0.9\leq y \leq1.1$) were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, muon spin rotation, and elastic neutron diffraction. The samples with $y<1$ exhibit coexistence of bulk superconductivity and incommensurate magnetism. The magnetic order remains incommensurate for $y\geq 1$, but with increasing Fe content superconductivity is suppressed and the magnetic correlation length increases. The results show that the superconducting and the magnetic properties of the Fe$_{y}$Se$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ can be tuned not only by varying the Se/Te ratio but also by changing the Fe content.

Coexistence of incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity in Fe_{1+y}Se_xTe_{1-x}

We report an investigation into the superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe_{1+y}Se_{x}Te_{1-x} single crystals by magnetic susceptibility, muon spin rotation, and neutron diffraction. We find three regimes of behavior in the phase diagram for 0\leq x\leq 0.5: (i) commensurate magnetic order for x< 0.1, (ii) bulk superconductivity for $x\lesssim 0.1$, and (iii) a range \sim 0.25\leq x\leq 0.45 in which superconductivity coexists with static incommensurate magnetic order. The results are qualitatively consistent with a two-band mean-field model in which itinerant magnetism and extended s-wave superconductivity are competing order parameters.

Excitations from a chiral magnetized state of a frustrated quantum spin liquid

We study excitations in weakly interacting pairs of quantum spin ladders coupled through geometrically frustrated bonds. The ground state is a disordered spin liquid, that at high fields is replaced by an ordered chiral helimagnetic phase. The spectra observed by high-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the prototype compound Sul-Cu2Cl4 are qualitatively different from those in the previously studied frustration-free spin liquids. Beyond the critical field Hc=3.7 T, the soft mode that drives the quantum phase transition spawns two separate excitations: a gapless Goldstone mode and a massive magnon. Additional massive quasiparticles are clearly visible below Hc, but are destroyed in the ordered phase. In their place one observes a sharply bound excitation continuum.

Synthesis and structural characterization of 2Dioxane.2H2O.CuCl2: metal-organic compound with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic S=1/2 chains

A novel organometallic compound 2Dioxane.CuCl2.2H2O has been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field inelastic neutron scattering have also been used to study its magnetic properties. It turns out that this material is a weakly coupled one-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain system with chain direction along the crystallographic c axis and the nearest-neighbor intra-chain exchange constant J=0.85(4) meV. The next-nearest-neighbor inter-chain exchange constant J' is also estimated to be 0.05 meV. The observed magnetic excitation spectrum from inelastic neutron scattering is in excellent agreement with numerical calculations based on the Muller ansatz.

Chiral fluctuations in MnSi above Tc

Polarized neutrons are used to determine the antisymmetric part of the magnetic susceptibility in non-centrosymmetric MnSi. The paramagnetic fluctuations are found to be incommensurate with the chemical lattice and to have a chiral character. We argue that antisymmetric interactions must be taken into account to properly describe the critical dynamics in MnSi above T$_C$. The possibility of directly measuring the polarization dependent part of the dynamical susceptibility in a large class of compounds through polarised inelastic neutron-scattering is outlined as it can yield direct evidence for antisymmetric interactions like spin-orbit coupling in metals as well as in insulators.
