Correlations after quantum quenches in the XXZ spin chain: Failure of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble

We study the nonequilibrium time evolution of the spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) spin chain, with a choice of dimer product and Neel states as initial states. We investigate numerically various short-ranged spin correlators in the long-time limit and find that they deviate significantly from predictions based on the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE) hypotheses. By computing the asymptotic spin correlators within the recently proposed quench-action formalism [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 257203 (2013)], however, we find excellent agreement with the numerical data. We, therefore, conclude that the GGE cannot give a complete description even of local observables, while the quench-action formalism correctly captures the steady state in this case.

Exact finite volume expectation values of local operators in excited states

We present a conjecture for the exact expression of finite volume expectation values in excited states in integrable quantum field theories, which is an extension of an earlier conjecture to the case of general diagonal factorized scattering with bound states and a nontrivial bootstrap structure. The conjectured expression is a spectral expansion which uses the exact form factors and the excited state thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz as building blocks. The conjecture is proven for the case of the trace of the energy-moment tensor. Concerning its validity for more general operators, we provide numerical evidence using the truncated conformal space approach. It is found that the expansion fails to be well-defined for small values of the volume in cases when the singularity structure of the TBA equations undergoes a non-trivial rearrangement under some critical value of the volume. Despite these shortcomings, the conjectured expression is expected to be valid for all volumes for most of the excited states, and as an expansion above the critical volume for the rest.

Failure of the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis in integrable models with multiple particle species

It has been recently observed for a particular quantum quench in the XXZ spin chain that local observables do not equilibrate to the predictions of the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE). In this work we argue that the breakdown of the GGE can be attributed to the failure of the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (GETH), which has been the main candidate to explain the validity of the GGE. We provide explicit counterexamples to the GETH and argue that generally it does not hold in models with multiple particle species. Therefore there is no reason to assume that the GGE should describe the long time limit of observables in these integrable models.

Overlaps between eigenstates of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and a class of simple product states

We consider a class of quantum quenches in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain, where the initial state is of a simple product form. Specific examples are the Néel state, the dimer state and the q-deformed dimer state. We compute determinant formulas for finite volume overlaps between the initial state and arbitrary eigenstates of the spin chain Hamiltonian. These results could serve as a basis for calculating the time dependence of correlation functions following the quantum quench.

Quantum quenches and Generalized Gibbs Ensemble in a Bethe Ansatz solvable lattice model of interacting bosons

We consider quantum quenches in the so-called $q$-boson lattice model. We argue that the Generalized Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis holds in this model, therefore the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) gives a valid description of the stationary states in the long time limit. For a special class of initial states (which are the pure Fock states in the local basis) we are able to provide the GGE predictions for the resulting root densities. We also give predictions for the long-time limit of certain local operators. In the $q\to\infty$ limit the calculations simplify considerably, the wave functions are given by Schur polynomials and the overlaps with the initial states can be written as simple determinants. In two cases we prove rigorously that the GGE prediction for the root density is correct. Moreover, we calculate the exact time dependence of a physical observable (the one-site Emptiness Formation Probability) for the quench starting from the state with exactly one particle per site. In the long-time limit the GGE prediction is recovered.

Quenching the XXZ spin chain: quench action approach versus generalized Gibbs ensemble

Following our previous work [PRL 113 (2014) 09020] we present here a detailed comparison of the quench action approach and the predictions of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, with the result that while the quench action formalism correctly captures the steady state, the GGE does not give a correct description of local short-distance correlation functions. We extend our studies to include another initial state, the so-called q-dimer state. We present important details of our construction, including new results concerning exact overlaps for the dimer and q-dimer states, and we also give an exact solution of the quench-action-based overlap-TBA for the q-dimer. Furthermore, we extend our computations to include the xx spin correlations besides the zz correlations treated previously, and give a detailed discussion of the underlying reasons for the failure of the GGE, especially in the light of new developments.

Short distance correlators in the XXZ spin chain for arbitrary string distributions

In this letter we consider expectation values of local correlators in highly excited states of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. Assuming that the string hypothesis holds we formulate the following conjecture: The correlation functions can be computed using the known factorized formulas of the finite temperature situation, if the building blocks are computed via certain linear integral equations using the string densities only. We prove this statement for the nearest neighbour z-z correlator for states with arbitrary string densities. Also, we check the conjecture numerically for other correlators in the finite temperature case. Our results pave the way towards the computation of the stationary values of correlators in non-equilibrium situations using the so-called quench-action approach.

Dynamical free energy and the Loschmidt-echo for a class of quantum quenches in the Heisenberg spin chain

We consider a class of global quantum quenches in the Heisenberg XXZ spin chain, where the initial states are given by products of local two-site states. The two main examples are the Néel state and the dimer state. We derive an exact analytic result for the "Loschmidt echo per site" at imaginary times and also consider the analytic continuation back to real times. As a by-product we obtain an exact result for the "overlap per site" between the Néel state and the ground state of the XXZ Hamiltonian in the massive regime.

Surface free energy of the open XXZ spin-1/2 chain

We study the boundary free energy of the XXZ spin-$\tf{1}{2}$ chain subject to diagonal boundary fields. We first show that the representation for its finite Trotter number approximant obtained by Bortz, Frahm and Göhmann is related to the partition function of the six-vertex model with reflecting ends. Building on the Tsuchiya determinant representation for the latter quantity we are able to take the infinite Trotter number limit. This yields a representation for the surface free energy which involves the solution of the non-linear integral equation that governs the thermodynamics of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain subject to periodic boundary conditions. We show that this integral representation allows one to extract the low-$T$ asymptotic behavior of the boundary magnetization at finite external magnetic field on the one hand and numerically plot this function on the other hand.

Local correlations in the 1D Bose gas from a scaling limit of the XXZ chain

We consider the K-body local correlations in the (repulsive) 1D Bose gas for general K, both at finite size and in the thermodynamic limit. Concerning the latter we develop a multiple integral formula which applies for arbitrary states of the system with a smooth distribution of Bethe roots, including the ground state and finite temperature Gibbs-states. In the cases K<=4 we perform the explicit factorization of the multiple integral. In the case of K=3 we obtain the recent result of Kormos et.al., whereas our formula for K=4 is new. Numerical results are presented as well.

Bethe Ansatz Matrix Elements as Non-Relativistic Limits of Form Factors of Quantum Field Theory

We show that the matrix elements of integrable models computed by the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz can be put in direct correspondence with the Form Factors of integrable relativistic field theories. This happens when the S-matrix of a Bethe Ansatz model can be regarded as a suitable non-relativistic limit of the S-matrix of a field theory, and when there is a well-defined mapping between the Hilbert spaces and operators of the two theories. This correspondence provides an efficient method to compute matrix elements of Bethe Ansatz integrable models, overpassing the technical difficulties of their direct determination. We analyze this correspondence for the simplest example in which it occurs, i.e. the Quantum Non-Linear Schrodinger and the Sinh-Gordon models.

Form factor expansion for thermal correlators

We consider finite temperature correlation functions in massive integrable Quantum Field Theory. Using a regularization by putting the system in finite volume, we develop a novel approach (based on multi-dimensional residues) to the form factor expansion for thermal correlators. The first few terms are obtained explicitly in theories with diagonal scattering. We also discuss the validity of the LeClair-Mussardo proposal.

Mean values of local operators in highly excited Bethe states

We consider expectation values of local operators in (continuum) integrable models in a situation when the mean value is calculated in a single Bethe state with a large number of particles. We develop a form factor expansion for the thermodynamic limit of the mean value, which applies whenever the distribution of Bethe roots is given by smooth density functions. We present three applications of our general result: i) In the framework of integrable Quantum Field Theory (IQFT) we present a derivation of the LeClair-Mussardo formula for finite temperature one-point functions. We also extend the results to boundary operators in Boundary Field Theories. ii) We establish the LeClair-Mussardo formula for the non-relativistic 1D Bose gas in the framework of Algebraic Bethe Ansatz (ABA). This way we obtain an alternative derivation of the results of Kormos et. al. for the (temperature dependent) local correlations using only the concepts of ABA. iii) In IQFT we consider the long-time limit of one-point functions after a certain type of global quench. It is shown that our general results imply the integral series found by Fioretti and Mussardo. We also discuss the generalized Eigenstate Thermalization hypothesis in the context of quantum quenches in integrable models. It is shown that a single mean value always takes the form of a thermodynamic average in a Generalized Gibbs Ensemble, although the relation to the conserved charges is rather indirect.

On O(1) contributions to the free energy in Bethe Ansatz systems: the exact g-function

We investigate the sub-leading contributions to the free energy of Bethe Ansatz solvable (continuum) models with different boundary conditions. We show that the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz approach is capable of providing the O(1) pieces if both the density of states in rapidity space and the quadratic fluctuations around the saddle point solution to the TBA are properly taken into account. In relativistic boundary QFT the O(1) contributions are directly related to the exact g-function. In this paper we provide an all-orders proof of the previous results of P. Dorey et al. on the g-function in both massive and massless models. In addition, we derive a new result for the g-function which applies to massless theories with arbitrary diagonal scattering in the bulk.

One-point functions in massive integrable QFT with boundaries

We consider the expectation value of a local operator on a strip with non-trivial boundaries in 1+1 dimensional massive integrable QFT. Using finite volume regularisation in the crossed channel and extending the boundary state formalism to the finite volume case we give a series expansion for the one-point function in terms of the exact form factors of the theory. The truncated series is compared with the numerical results of the truncated conformal space approach in the scaling Lee-Yang model. We discuss the relevance of our results to quantum quench problems.

Scattering and duality in the 2 dimensional OSP(2|2) Gross Neveu and sigma models

We write the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for the massive OSp(2|2) Gross Neveu and sigma models. We find evidence that the GN S matrix proposed by Bassi and Leclair [12] is the correct one. We determine features of the sigma model S matrix, which seem highly unconventional; we conjecture in particular a relation between this sigma model and the complex sine-Gordon model at a particular value of the coupling. We uncover an intriguing duality between the OSp(2|2) GN (resp. sigma) model on the one hand, and the SO(4) sigma (resp. GN model) on the other, somewhat generalizing to the massive case recent results on OSp(4|2). Finally, we write the TBA for the (SUSY version of the) flow into the random bond Ising model proposed by Cabra et al. [39], and conclude that their S matrix cannot be correct.
