Distinct Magnetic Phases in Structurally Uniform SrCoO$_{3-y}$

Two magnetic phase transitions have been noted for SrCoO$_{3-y}$ for near-stoichiometric oxygen concentrations (small y). Using muon spin rotation and neutron scattering experiments, we have established that the two transitions represent separate, spatially distinct magnetic phases that coexist in a two-phase equilibrium mixture. The two phases most likely represent areas of the sample with different effective valence charge density. Further, the phases exist over regions with a length scale intermediate between nanoscale charge inhomogeneity and systems such as manganites or super-oxygenated cuprates with large length scale phase separation.

Perovskite BaCrO_{3}: completing a materials system with an anomalous Mott transition

We have synthesized and characterized laser-deposited film samples of perovskite BaCrO_{3}, a missing member of the perovskite-chromate family. The BaCrO_{3} films have a substantially larger lattice constant than other chromates, are insulating, and exhibit weak ferromagnetism likely associated with canted antiferromagnetism. Comparison with the other sister compounds CaCrO_{3} and SrCrO_{3} suggest an anomalous Mott transition where magnetism is independent of whether the compound is metallic or insulating

Direct proof of unique magnetic and superconducting phases in superoxygenated high-Tc cuprates

We present a combined magnetic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation study of the nature of the magnetic and superconducting phases in electronically phase separated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y), x = 0.04, 065, 0.09. For all samples, we find long-range modulated magnetic order below T_N ~ T_c = 39 K. In sharp contrast wit oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), we find that the magnetic propagation vector as well as the ordered magnetic moment is independent of Sr content and consistent with that of the 'striped' cuprates. Our study provides direct proof that superoxygenation in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) allows the spin stripe ordered phase to emerge and phase separate from superconducting regions with the hallmarks of optimally doped oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4).

Suppression of Magnetic Phase Separation in Epitaxial SrCoOx Films

Using pulsed laser deposition and a unique fast quenching method, we have prepared SrCoOx epitaxial films on SiTiO3 substrates. As electrochemical oxidation increases the oxygen content from x = 2.75 to 3.0, the films tend to favor the discrete magnetic phases seen in bulk samples for the homologous series SrCoO(3-n/8) (n = 0, 1, 2). Unlike bulk samples, 200nm thick films remain single phase throughout the oxidation cycle. 300 nm films can show two simultaneous phases during deoxidation. These results are attributed to finite thickness effects and imply the formation of ordered regions larger than approximately 300 nm.

Impact of Valence States on Superconductivity of Oxygen Incorporated Iron Telluride and Iron Selenide Films

We report on the local electronic structure of oxygen incorporated FeTe and FeSe films and how this relates to superconductivity observed in these films. In the case of FeTe, intially grown films are measured to be non-superconducting, but become superconducting following oxygen incorporation. In FeSe the opposite happens, initially grown films are measured to be superconducting, but experience a quenching of superconductivity following oxygen incorporation. Total Fluorescence Yield (TFY) X-ray absorption experiments show that oxygen incorporation changes the initial Fe valence state in both the initially grown FeTe and FeSe films to mainly Fe3+ in the oxygen incorporated films. In contrast we observe that while Te moves to a mixed Te0/Te4+ valence state, the Se always remains Se0. This work highlights how different responses of the electronic structure by the respective chalcogenides to oxidation could be related to the mechanisms which are inducing superconductivity in FeTe and quenching superconductivity in FeSe.

Phase Coexistence Near a Morphotropic Phase Boundary in Sm-doped BiFeO3 Films

We have investigated heteroepitaxial films of Sm-doped BiFeO3 with a Sm-concentration near a morphotropic phase boundary. Our high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, carried out in a temperature range of 25C to 700C, reveals substantial phase coexistence as one changes temperature to crossover from a low-temperature PbZrO3-like phase to a high-temperature orthorhombic phase. We also examine changes due to strain for films greater or less than the critical thickness for misfit dislocation formation. Particularly, we note that thicker films exhibit a substantial volume collapse associated with the structural transition that is suppressed in strained thin films.

Comparison of 32-site exact diagonalization results and ARPES spectral functions for the AFM insulator $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$

We explore the success of various versions of the one-band t-J model in explaining the full spectral functions found in angle-resolved photoemission spectra for the prototypical, quasi two-dimensional, tetragonal, antiferromagnetic insulator $Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2$. After presenting arguments justifying our extraction of $A(k,ω)$ from the experimental data, we rely on exact-diagonalization results from studies of a square 32-site lattice, the largest cluster for which such information is presently available, to perform this comparison. Our work leads us to believe that (i) a one-band model that includes hopping out to third-nearest neighbours, as well three-site, spin-dependent hopping, can indeed explain not only the dispersion relation, but also the quasiparticle lifetimes -- only in the neighbourhood of $k = (π/2,0)$ do we find disagreement; (ii) an energy-dependent broadening function, $Γ(E) = Γ_0 + A E$, is important in accounting for the incoherent contributions to the spectral functions.

Intercalation and Staging Behavior in Super-Oxygenated $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$

A high temperature electrochemical oxidation process has been used to produce large single crystals of $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ suitable for neutron scattering experiments. Below room temperature the oxygen-rich phases have structural superlattice scattering peaks which indicate new periodicities ranging from 2 to 6.6 layers perpendicular to the copper oxide planes. A model structure originally proposed for $La_2NiO_{4 + δ}$ can account for the superlattice peaks as a result of anti-phase domain boundaries between different tilt directions of the CuO$_6$ octahedra. Within this model, the changes in CuO$_6$ tilt directions are induced by segregated layers of interstitial oxygen which order in a manner similar to intercalants in graphite. This structural model thus clarifies previous work and establishes $La_2CuO_{4 + δ}$ as a unique lamellar superconducting system with annealed disorder.
