Single-component superconducting state in UTe2 at 2 K

UTe2 is a newly-discovered unconventional superconductor wherein multicomponent topological superconductivity is anticipated based on the presence of two superconducting transitions and time-reversal symmetry breaking in the superconducting state. The observation of two superconducting transitions, however, remains controversial. Here we demonstrate that UTe2 single crystals displaying an optimal superconducting transition temperature at 2 K exhibit a single transition and remarkably high quality supported by their small residual heat capacity in the superconducting state and large residual resistance ratio. Our results shed light on the intrinsic superconducting properties of UTe2 and bring into question whether UTe2 is a multicomponent superconductor at ambient pressure.

Electronic Correlation and Magnetism in the Ferromagnetic Metal Fe3GeTe2

Motivated by the search for design principles of rare-earth-free strong magnets, we present a study of electronic structure and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic metal Fe3GeTe2 within local density approximation (LDA) of the density functional theory, and its combination with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). For comparison to these calculations, we have measured magnetic and thermodynamic properties as well as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and the photoemission spectrum of single crystal Fe3GeTe2. We find that the experimentally determined Sommerfeld coefficient is enhanced by an order of magnitude with respect to the LDA value. This enhancement can be partially explained by LDA+DMFT. In addition, the inclusion of dynamical electronic correlation effects provides the experimentally observed magnetic moments, and the spectral density is in better agreement with photoemission data. These results establish the importance of electronic correlations in this ferromagnet.

Magnetic anisotropy in the frustrated spin chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$

Isotropic and anisotropic magnetic behavior of the frustrated spin chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$ is reported. Three magnetic transitions observed in zero magnetic field are tracked in fields applied along different crystallographic directions using magnetization, heat capacity, and magnetostriction measurements. Qualitatively different temperature-field diagrams are obtained below 10 T for the field applied along $a$ or $b$ and along $c$, respectively. In contrast, a nearly isotropic high-field phase emerges above 18 T and persists up to the saturation that occurs around 22.5 T. Upon cooling in low fields, the transitions at $T_{\rm N1}$ and $T_{\rm N2}$ toward the spin-density-wave and stripe phases are of the second order, whereas the transition at $T_{\rm N3}$ toward the helical state is of the first order and entails a lattice component. Our microscopic analysis identifies frustrated $J_1-J_2$ spin chains with a sizable antiferromagnetic interchain coupling in the $bc$ plane and ferromagnetic couplings along the $a$ direction. The competition between these ferromagnetic interchain couplings and the helical order within the chain underlies the incommensurate order along the $a$-direction, as observed experimentally. Although a helical state is triggered by the competition between $J_1$ and $J_2$ within the chain, the plane of the helix is not uniquely defined because of competing magnetic anisotropies. Using high-resolution synchrotron diffraction and $^{125}$Te nuclear magnetic resonance, we also demonstrate that the crystal structure of $β$-TeVO$_4$ does not change down to 10 K, and the orbital state of V$^{4+}$ is preserved.

Investigation of the physical properties of the tetragonal CeMAl4Si2 (M = Rh, Ir, Pt) compounds

The synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties studied by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic, thermal and transport measurements of CeMAl$_{4}$Si$_{2}$ (M = Rh, Ir, Pt) are reported, along with the electronic structure calculations for LaMAl$_{4}$Si$_{2}$ (M = Rh, Ir, Pt). These materials adopt a tetragonal crystal structure (space group P4/mmm) comprised of BaAl$_4$ blocks, separated by MAl$_2$ units, stacked along the $c$-axis. Both CeRhAl$_{4}$Si$_{2}$ and CeIrAl$_{4}$Si$_{2}$ order antiferromagnetically below $T_{N1}$=14 and 16 K, respectively, and undergo a second antiferromagnetic transitition at lower temperature ($T_{N2}$=9 and 14 K, respectively). CePtAl$_{4}$Si$_{2}$ orders ferromagnetically below $T_C$ =3 K with an ordered moment of $μ_{sat}$=0.8 $μ_{B}$ for a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $c$-axis. Electronic structure calculations reveal quasi-2D character of the Fermi surface.

PuPt2In7: a computational and experimental investigation

Flux-grown single crystals of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ are characterized and found to be both non-superconducting and non-magnetic down to 2 K. The Sommerfeld specific heat coefficient of $\sim 250$ mJ/mol K$^2$ indicates heavy fermion behavior. We report the results of generalized gradient approximation (GGA)+$U$ calculations of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ and as yet unsynthesized isovalent PuPt$_2$Ga$_7$. The strength of the $c$-$f$ hybridization of PuPt$_2$In$_7$ is similar to the PuCoIn$_5$ superconductor. The bare and $f$-weighted susceptibility within the constant-matrix-element approximation is calculated, showing a maximum along the $q_z$ direction at $q_x = q_y = 0.5$. A similar and slightly stronger maximum is also found in the structurally related heavy-fermion materials PuCoGa$_5$ and PuCoIn$_5$. The absence of superconductivity in PuPt$_2$In$_7$ is examined based on the results of our calculations.

Electronic Structure and Correlation Effects in PuCoIn5 as compared to PuCoGa5

Since their discovery nearly a decade ago, plutonium-based superconductors have attracted considerable interest, which is now heightened by the latest discovery of superconductivity in PuCoIn5. In the framework of density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) together with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we present a comparative study of the electronic structure of PuCoIn5 with the related material, PuCoGa5. Overall, a similar GGA-based electronic structure, including the density of states, energy dispersion, and Fermi surface topology, was found for both compounds. The GGA Pu 5f band was narrower in PuCoIn5 than in PuCoGa5, resulting in an effective reduction of Kondo screening in the former system, as also shown by DMFT calculations. This phenomenon is due to the expanded lattice for PuCoIn5.
