Interaction of eta mesons with nuclei

Back in the mid eighties, a new branch of investigation which was related to the interaction of eta mesons with nuclei came into existence. It started with the theoretical prediction of possible exotic states of eta mesons and nuclei bound by the strong interaction and later developed into an extensive experimental program to search for such unstable states as well as understand the underlying interaction via eta meson producing reactions. The vast literature of experimental as well as theoretical works which studied various aspects of eta producing reactions such as the π+π^+ nn →ηp\to ηp, pd→3p d \to ^3He ηη, p 6p \,^6Li →7\to ^7Be ηη and γ3γ^3He →η\to η X, to name a few, had but one objective in mind: to understand the eta - nucleon (ηNηN) and hence the ηη-nucleus interaction which could explain the production data and confirm the existence of some ηη-mesic nuclei. In spite of these efforts, there remain uncertainties in the knowledge of the ηNηN and hence the ηη-nucleus interaction. The present review is hence an attempt to bind together the findings in these works and draw some global and specific conclusions which can be useful for future explorations.

Study of K−K^- absorption at rest in nuclei followed by pΛp Λ emission

p Λp\,Λ emission in coincidence following K−K^- absorption at rest in nuclei is studied using quantum mechanical scattering theory and nuclear wave functions. K−K^- absorption is assumed to occur on two protons in the nucleus. In the formalism, emphasis is put on the study of the final state interaction (FSI) effects of pp and ΛΛ with the recoiling nucleus. We include elastic scattering and single nucleon knock-out (KO) channels in the FSI. Calculations are presented for the 12^{12}C nucleus, using shell model wave functions, and without any extra mass modification of the K− ppK^-\,pp system in the nucleus. Calculated results are presented for the angular correlation distribution between pp and ΛΛ, their invariant mass distribution and the momentum spectra of pp and ΛΛ. These results are compared with the corresponding experimental measurements \cite{agnello}. With only elastic scattering FSI included, the angular correlation distribution and the momentum spectra are found to be in good accord with the corresponding measurements. With full FSI the calculated p Λp\,Λ invariant mass distribution is found to have two peaks, one corresponding to the elastic scattering FSI and another to single nucleon KO FSI. The KO peak agrees fully, in position and shape, with the peak observed in Ref. \cite{agnello}. The peak corresponding to elastic scattering FSI does not seem to exist in the measured distribution. Considering that such a two peak structure is always seen in the inclusive (pp, p′p^\prime ) and (ee, e′e^\prime ) reactions in nuclei at intermediate energies, absence of the elastic scattering peak in the p Λp\,Λ reaction is intriguing.

Eta meson rescattering effects in the p + 6Li --> eta + 7Be reaction near threshold

The p + 6Li --> eta + 7Be reaction has been investigated with an emphasis on the eta meson and 7Be interaction in the final state. Considering the 6Li and 7Be nuclei to be alpha-d and alpha-3He clusters respectively, the reaction is modelled to proceed via the p + d [alpha] --> 3He [α] + eta reaction with the alpha remaining a spectator. The eta meson interacts with 7Be via multiple scatterings on the 3He and alpha clusters inside 7Be. The individual eta-3He and eta-alpha scatterings are evaluated using few body equations for the eta-3N and eta-4N systems with a coupled channel eta-N interaction as an input. Calculations including four low-lying states of 7Be lead to a double hump structure in the total cross section corresponding to the L=1(J=(1/2)−,(3/2)−)L = 1 (J = (1/2)^-, (3/2)^-) and L=3(J=(5/2)−,(7/2)−)L = 3 (J = (5/2)^-, (7/2)^-) angular momentum states. The humps arise due to the off-shell rescattering of the eta meson on the 7Be nucleus in the final state.

Study of the ηη-nucleus interaction in the pd→3Heηp d \to ^3He η reaction near threshold

A detailed study of the effect of the ηη-nucleus final state interaction (FSI) in the pd→3p d \to ^3Heη η reaction close to threshold is presented. The FSI is incorporated through a T-matrix for η3η^3He elastic scattering, constructed using few body equations. This T-matrix accounts for off-shell and binding effects in ηη-nucleus scattering. The energy dependence of the data on the pd→3p d \to ^3Heη η reaction near threshold is reproduced only after including the FSI. The off-shell and binding effects in η3η^3He scattering are found to be important. Given the uncertainty in the knowledge of the elementary ηη-nucleon interaction, the sensitivity of the pd→3 p d \to ^3Heη η cross section to different prescriptions of the elementary t-matrix, tηN→ηNt_{ηN \to ηN} is also discussed.

The elementary p(p,p'π^{+})n reaction

A detailed study of the elementary p(p,p′π+'π^{+})n reaction is presented using the delta isobar model. In this model, in the first step one of the two protons in the initial state gets excited to ΔΔ. This, in the second step, decays into a nucleon and a pion. For the pp→NΔpp \to NΔ step the parametrized form of the DWBA t-matrix of Jain and Santra, which reproduces most of the available data on pp→nΔ++pp \to nΔ^{++}, is used. The cross-sections studied include the outgoing proton momentum spectra in coincidence with the pion, the outgoing pion momentum spectra and the integrated total cross-section. We find that all the calculated numbers are in good agreement with the corresponding measured cross sections.
