Time-Resolved Cavity Nano-Optomechanics in the 20-100 GHz range

Applications of cavity optomechanics span from gravitational wave detection to the study of quantum motion states in mesoscopic mechanical systems. The engineering of resonators supporting strongly interacting mechanical and optical modes is central to these developments. However, current technological and experimental approaches limit the accessible mechanical frequencies to a few GHz, imposing hard constraints on quantum mechanical studies. Here we demonstrate the optical control of 20-100~GHz mechanical modes confined in the three dimensions within semiconductor nano-optomechanical pillar cavities. We use a time-resolved transient optical reflectivity technique and access both the energy spectrum and dynamics of the mechanical modes at the picosecond timescale. A strong increase of the optomechanical coupling upon reducing the pillar size is observed together with unprecedent room temperature Q-frequency products above $10^{14}$. The measurements also reveal sideband generation in the optomechanical response. Such resonators can naturally integrate quantum wells and quantum dots, enabling novel applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics and high frequency nanomechanics.

Polariton resonances for ultra-strong coupling cavity optomechanics in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells

Polariton-mediated light-sound interaction is investigated through resonant Brillouin experiments in GaAs/AlAs multiple-quantum wells. Photoelastic coupling enhancement at exciton-polariton resonance reaches 105 at 30 K as compared to a typical bulk solid room temperature transparency value. When applied to GaAs based cavity optomechanical nanodevices, this result opens the path to huge displacement sensitivities and to novel ultrastrong-coupling cavity phenomena with optomechanical couplings g0 in the range of 100 THz.

Cavity polariton optomechanics: Polariton path to fully resonant dispersive coupling in optomechanical resonators

Resonant photoelastic coupling in semiconductor nanostructures opens new perspectives for strongly enhanced light-sound interaction in optomechanical resonators. One potential problem, however, is the reduction of the cavity Q-factor induced by dissipation when the resonance is approached. We show in this letter that cavity-polariton mediation in the light-matter process overcomes this limitation allowing for a strongly enhanced photon-phonon coupling without significant lifetime reduction in the strongly-coupled regime. Huge optomechanical coupling factors in the PetaHz/nm range are envisaged, three orders of magnitude larger than the backaction produced by the mechanical displacement of the cavity mirrors.

Resonant Brillouin scattering of excitonic polaritons in multiple-quantum-well structures

We present theoretical and experimental study of resonant Brillouin scattering of excitonic polaritons in one-dimensional multiple-quantum-well structure. We obtain general analytical results for the scattering light spectra, valid for arbitrary quantum well arrangement. Application of our theory to the specific case of short-period superlattice shows a perfect quantitative agreement with experimental results for the height, width and position of the Brillouin scattering peaks and allows us to determine the energy, radiative and nonradiative decay rates of quantum well excitons. We reveal the signatures of excitonic polariton formation in the scattering spectra and show, that the spectral width and height are strongly sensitive to the number of wells in the sample.

Dispersion and damping of multi-quantum well polaritons from resonant Brillouin scattering by folded acoustic modes

We report on confined exciton resonances of acoustic and folded acoustic phonon light scattering in a GaAs/AlAs multi-quantum-well. Significant variations of the line shifts and widths are observed across the resonance and quantitatively reproduced in terms of the polariton dispersion. This high resolution Brillouin study brings new unexpectedly detailed informations on the polariton dynamics in confined systems.
