Magnetic field-induced type-II Weylsemimetallic state in geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice GdB4

Weyl semimetal is a topologically non-trivial phase of matter with pairs of Weyl nodes in the k-space, which act as monopole and anti-monopole pairs of Berry curvature. Two hallmarks of the Weyl metallic state are the topological surface state called the Fermi arc and the chiral anomaly. It is known that the chiral anomaly yields anomalous magneto-transport phenomena. In this study, we report the emergence of the type-II Weyl semimetallic state in the geometrically frustrated non-collinear antiferromagnetic Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL) GdB4 crystal. When we apply magnetic fields perpendicular to the noncollinear moments in SSL plane, Weyl nodes are created above and below the Fermi energy along the M-A line (tau-band) because the spin tilting breaks the time-reversal symmetry and lifts band degeneracy while preserving C4z or C2z symmetry. The unique electronic structure of GdB4 under magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the SSL gives rise to a non-trivial Berry phase, detected in de Haas-van Alphen experiments and chiral-anomaly-induced negative magnetoresistance. The emergence of the magnetic field-induced Weyl state in SSL presents a new guiding principle to develop novel types of Weyl semimetals in frustrated spin systems.

Edwards polaron formation : From one to three dimension

Employing a self-consistent (optimized) variational diagonalization scheme, we investigate the formation of polaronic quasiparticles in a spinless fermion-boson transport model that couples the movement of charge carriers to fluctuations and correlations of a background medium. The background is parameterized by bosonic degrees of freedom. The variational fermion-boson Hilbert space is constructed to achieve high accuracy in one to three spatial dimensions with modest computational requirements. To characterize the ground-state properties of the Edwards model in the single-particle sector, we present exact numerical results for the polaron band dispersion, quasiparticle weight, Drude weight, mass enhancement, and the particle-boson correlations in a wide parameter regime. In the Edwards model, transport will be quasifree, diffusive or boson-assisted in the weakly fermion-boson coupled, fluctuation-dominated or strongly correlated regimes, respectively. Thereby correlated transport is not only assisted but also limited by the bosonic excitations. As a result, the Drude weight remains finite even in the limit of very small boson frequencies. For a strongly correlated background, closed loops are important, in any dimension, to generate a finite effective particle mass even when the free fermion has an infinite mass.

Electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$: Is it a Topological Insulator or not?

To resolve the controversial issue of the topological nature of the electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$, we have made a combined study using density functional theory (DFT) and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Accurate determination of the low energy band topology in DFT requires the use of modified Becke-Johnson exchange potential incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$ of Yb $4f$ electrons as large as 7 eV. We have double-checked the DFT result with the more precise GW band calculation. ARPES is done with the non-polar (110) surface termination to avoid band bending and quantum well confinement that have confused ARPES spectra taken on the polar (001) surface termination. Thereby we show definitively that YbB$_{6}$ has a topologically trivial B 2$p$-Yb 5$d$ semiconductor band gap, and hence is a non-Kondo non-topological insulator (TI). In agreement with theory, ARPES shows pure divalency for Yb and a $p$-$d$ band gap of 0.3 eV, which clearly rules out both of the previous scenarios of $f$-$d$ band inversion Kondo TI and $p$-$d$ band inversion non-Kondo TI. We have also examined the pressure-dependent electronic structure of YbB$_{6}$, and found that the high pressure phase is not a Kondo TI but a \emph{p}-\emph{d} overlap semimetal.

Magnetic effects in sulfur-decorated graphene

The interaction between two different materials can present novel phenomena that are quite different from the physical properties observed when each material stands alone. Strong electronic correlations, such as magnetism and superconductivity, can be produced as the result of enhanced Coulomb interactions between electrons. Two-dimensional materials are powerful candidates to search for the novel phenomena because of the easiness of arranging them and modifying their properties accordingly. In this work, we report magnetic effects of graphene, a prototypical non-magnetic two-dimensional semi-metal, in the proximity with sulfur, a diamagnetic insulator. In contrast to the well-defined metallic behaviour of clean graphene, an energy gap develops at the Fermi energy for the graphene/sulfur compound with decreasing temperature. This is accompanied by a steep increase of the resistance, a sign change of the slope in the magneto-resistance between high and low fields, and magnetic hysteresis. A possible origin of the observed electronic and magnetic responses is discussed in terms of the onset of low-temperature magnetic ordering. These results provide intriguing insights on the search for novel quantum phases in graphene-based compounds.

Substrate-tuning of correlated spin-orbit oxides

We have systematically investigated substrate-strain effects on the electronic structures of two representative Sr-iridates, a correlated-insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and a metal SrIrO$_3$. Optical conductivities obtained by the \emph{ab initio} electronic structure calculations reveal that the tensile strain shifts the optical peak positions to higher energy side with altered intensities, suggesting the enhancement of the electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength in Sr-iridates. The response of the electronic structure upon tensile strain is found to be highly correlated with the direction of magnetic moment, the octahedral connectivity, and the SOC strength, which cooperatively determine the robustness of $J_{eff}$=1/2 ground states. Optical responses are analyzed also with microscopic model calculation and compared with corresponding experiments. In the case of SrIrO$_3$, the evolution of the electronic structure near the Fermi level shows high tunability of hole bands, as suggested by previous experiments.

The Insulating Nature of Na2IrO3: Mott-type or Slater-type?

We have investigated temperature-dependent electronic structures of Na2IrO3 to unravel its insulating nature. Employing the combined scheme of the density-functional theory (DFT) and the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT), we have shown that the insulating state persists even above the Neel temperature (T_{N}), which reveals that Na2IrO3 is classified into a Mott-type insulator. The measured photoemission spectrum in the paramagnetic (PM) state is well described by the electronic structure obtained from the DFT+DMFT for the insulating state above T_{N}. The analysis of optical conductivity, however, suggests that the non-local correlation effect is also important in Na2IrO3. Therefore, Na2IrO3 is not to be a standard Mott insulator in that the extended nature and the non-local correlation effect of Ir 5d electrons are important as well in describing its electronic and magnetic properties.

The nature of Itinerant Ferromagnetism of SrRuO3 : A DFT+DMFT Study

We have investigated the temperature (T)-dependent evolution of electronic structures and magnetic properties of an itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO3, employing the combined scheme of the density functional theory and the dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT). The inclusion of finite dynamical correlation effects beyond the DFT well describes not only the incoherent hump structure observed in the photoemission experiment but also the T-dependent magnetic properties in accordance with experiments. We have shown that the magnetization of SrRuO3 evolves with the Stoner behavior below the Curie temperature (Tc), reflecting the weak itinerant ferromagnetic behavior, but the local residual magnetic moment persists even above Tc, indicating the local magnetic moment behavior. We suggest that the ferromagnetism of SrRuO3 has dual nature of both weak and local moment limits, even though the magnetism of SrRuO3 is more itinerant than that of Fe.

Dimerization-Induced Fermi-Surface Reconstruction in IrTe2

We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation study on IrTe2 single crystals showing complex dimer formations. By comparing the angle dependence of dHvA oscillations with band structure calculations, we show distinct Fermi surface reconstruction induced by a 1/5-type and a 1/8-type dimerizations. This verifies that an intriguing quasi-two-dimensional conducting plane across the layers is induced by dimerization in both cases. A phase transition to the 1/8 phase with higher dimer density reveals that local instabilities associated with intra- and interdimer couplings are the main driving force for complex dimer formations in IrTe2.

Electronic excitations in the edge-shared relativistic Mott insulator: Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We have investigated the excitation spectra of $j_{eff}$=$\frac{1}{2}$ Mott insulator Na$_2$IrO$_3$. Taking into account a relativistic multiplet structure of Ir ions, we have calculated the optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, which manifest different features from those of a canonical $j_{eff}$=$\frac{1}{2}$ system Sr$_2$IrO$_4$.Distinctly from the two-peak structure in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$, $σ(ω)$ in Na$_2$IrO$_3$ has a broad single peak dominated by interband transitions from $j_{eff}$=$\frac{3}{2}$ to $\frac{1}{2}$. RIXS spectra exhibit the spin-orbit (SO) exciton that has a two-peak structure arising from the crystal-field effect, and the magnon peak at energies much lower than in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. In addition, a small peak near the optical absorption edge is found in RIXS spectra, originating from the coupling between the electron-hole ($e$-$h$) excitation and the SO exciton. Our findings corroborate the validity of the relativistic electronic structure and importance of both itinerant and local features in Na$_2$IrO$_3$.

Interacting Holstein and extended-Holstein bipolarons

Employing the recently developed self-consistent variational basis generation scheme, we have investigated the bipolaron-bipolaron interaction within the purview of Holstein-Hubbard and the extended-Holstein-Hubbard (F2H) model on a discrete one-dimensional lattice. The density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method has also been used for the Holstein-Hubbard model. We have shown that there exists no bipolaron-bipolaron attraction in the Holstein-Hubbard model. In contrast, we have obtained clear-cut bipolaron-bipolaron attraction in the F2H model. Composite bipolarons are formed above a critical electron-phonon coupling strength, which can survive the finite Hubbard $U$ effect. We have constructed the phase diagram of F2H polarons and bipolarons, and discussed the phase separation in terms of the formation of composite bipolarons.

Structural instability and the Mott-Peierls transition in a half-metallic hollandite : K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$

In order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant metal-insulator and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+$U$ ($U$: Coulomb correlation) calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb correlation plays an essential role in the structural transition. The lattice displacements of the softened phonon at X explain the observed lattice distortions in K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$ perfectly well, suggesting the Peierls distortion vector {\bf Q} of X (0, 0, 1/2). The combined study of electronic and phonon properties reveals that half-metallic K$_{2}$Cr$_{8}$O$_{16}$, upon cooling, undergoes the correlation-assisted Peierls transition to become a Mott-Peierls ferromagnetic insulator at low temperature.

Temperature Dependence of Linked Gap and Surface State Evolution in the Mixed Valent Topological Insulator SmB6

Taken together and viewed holistically, recent theory, low temperature (T) transport, photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum oscillation experiments have built a very strong case that the paradigmatic mixed valence insulator SmB6 is currently unique as a three-dimensional strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). As such, its many-body T-dependent bulk gap brings an extra richness to the physics beyond that of the weakly correlated TI materials. How will the robust, symmetry-protected TI surface states evolve as the gap closes with increasing T? For SmB6 exploiting this opportunity first requires resolution of other important gap-related issues, its origin, its magnitude, its T-dependence and its role in bulk transport. In this paper we report detailed T-dependent angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements that answer all these questions in a unified way.

Termination-dependent Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Ultrathin SrRuO$_{3}$ (111) Film on SrTiO$_{3}$

We have investigated electronic and magnetic properties of ultrathin SrRuO$_{3}$ (SRO) film grown on (111) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrate using the {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations. Ru-terminated SRO (111) film suffers from strong surface atomic relaxations, while SrO$_{3}$-terminated one preserves the surface structure of ideal perovskites. Both Ru- and SrO$_{3}$-terminated SRO (111) film show unexpected interlayer antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure at the surface, but with different characters and mechanisms. The AFM structure for the former results from the large surface atomic relaxation, whereas that for the latter results from the truncated film effect. Interestingly, for the SrO$_{3}$-termination case, the half-metallic nature emerges despite the interlayer AFM structure. Upon reducing the thickness, the collapsing behavior of magnetic anisotropy from out-of-plane to in-plane easy axis is found to occur for the Ru-termination case, which, however, does not pertain to SrO$_{3}$-termination case.

Termination-dependent Surface In-gap States in a Mixed-valent Topological Insulator: SmB$_6$

We have investigated the surface states of a potential mixed-valent topological insulator SmB$_6$ based on the first principles density functional theory slab band structure analysis. We have found that metallic surface states are formed in the bulk band gap region, providing evidence for the topological insulating nature of SmB$_6$. The obtained surface in-gap states are quite different from those in existing reports in that they are formed differently depending on the Sm or B$_6$ surface termination, and are composed of mainly Sm $4f$ state indicating the essentiality of including $f$ electrons in describing the surface states. We have obtained the spin chiral structures of the Fermi surfaces, which are also in accordance with the topological insulating nature of SmB$_6$.

The coexistence of charge density wave and superconductivity in Pt-based layered superconductors : SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

The intriguing coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated based on the {\it ab initio} density functional theory band structure and phonon calculations. We have found that the local split distortions Pt atoms in the [As-Pt-As] layers play an essential role in driving the five-fold supercell CDW instability as well as the phonon softening instability in SrPt$_2$As$_2$. By contrast, the CDW and phonon softening instabilities in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ occur without split distortions of Pt atoms, indicating that the driving mechanisms of the CDW in SrPt$_2$As$_2$ and LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ are different. We have found that the CDW instability for the former arises from the Fermi surface nesting, while, for the latter, from the saddle point scattering. The phonon calculations, however, suggest that the CDW and the superconductivity coexist in [{\it X}-Pt-{\it X}] layers ({\it X} = As or Si) for both cases.

Topological properties and the dynamical crossover from mixed-valence to Kondo-lattice behavior in golden phase of SmS

We have investigated temperature-dependent behaviors of electronic structure and resistivity in a mixed-valent golden phase of SmS, based on the dynamical mean-field theory band structure calculations. Upon cooling, the coherent Sm 4$f$ bands are formed to produce the hybridization induced pseudogap near the Fermi level, and accordingly the topology of Fermi surface is changed to exhibit a Lifshitz-like transition. The surface states emerging in the bulk gap region are found to be not topologically protected states but just typical Rashba spin-polarized states, indicating that SmS is not a topological Kondo semimetal. From the analysis of anomalous resistivity behavior in SmS, we have identified universal energy scales, which characterize the Kondo/mixed-valent semimetallic systems.

Universal metastability of the low-spin state in Co$^{2+}$ systems: non-Mott type pressure-induced spin-state transition in CoCl$_{2}$

We have investigated the pressure-induced spin-state transition in Co$^{2+}$ systems in terms of a competition between the Hund's exchange energy ($J$) and the crystal-field splitting ($Δ_{CF}$). First, we show the universal metastability of the low-spin state in octahedrally coordinated Co$^{2+}$ systems. Then we present the strategy to search for a Co$^{2+}$ system, for which the mechanism of spin-state and metal-insulator transitions is governed not by the Mott physics but by $J$ vs. $Δ_{CF}$ physics. Using CoCl$_{2}$ as a prototypical Co$^{2+}$ system, we have demonstrated the pressure-induced spin-state transition from high-spin to low-spin, which is accompanied with insulator-to-metal and antiferromagnetic to half-metallic ferromagnetic transitions. Combined with metastable character of Co$^{2+}$ and the high compressibility nature of CoCl$_{2}$, the transition pressure as low as 27 GPa can be identified on the basis of $J$ vs. $Δ_{CF}$ physics.

A new self-consistent basis generation scheme for polaron and bipolaron systems

We have developed a new self-consistent scheme of generating variational basis based on the exactdiagonalization, which can be applied efficiently to various types of electron-phonon systems. This scheme is quite general and brings down the size of the variational space by an order of magnitude or even more in some cases to reproduce the most precise ground state energies and correlation functions available in the literature. This method has enormous potential for application to systems with more electrons or in higher dimensions, which are still beyond the reach of exact-diagonalization just because of the sheer size of their variational space needed to get reasonably convergent results.

Band symmetries of mixed-valence topological insulator: SmB6

We have investigated the band structure and the band symmetry of mixed-valence insulator SmB$_{6}$ systematically within the density functional theory (DFT). We have analyzed the symmetries and characters of Sm $4f$ and $5d$ bands near the Fermi level ($E_F$) in terms of the non-relativistic real cubic bases as well as the relativistic complex bases incorporating the spin-orbit coupling and the cubic crystal field. Further, we have found that the semi-core band located at $\sim 15$ eV below $E_F$ has the mixed parity and thereby affects the parity eigenvalues of the special ${\bf k}$-points considerably. We have discussed the possible surface states and topological class of SmB$_{6}$, based on the bulk parity tables.

Correlated Electronic Structures and the Phase Diagram of Hydrocarbon-based Superconductors

We have investigated correlated electronic structures and the phase diagram of electron-doped hydrocarbon molecular solids, based on the dynamical mean-field theory. We have found that the ground state of hydrocarbon-based superconductors such as electron-doped picene and coronene is a multi-band Fermi liquid, while that of non-superconducting electron-doped pentacene is a single-band Fermi liquid in the proximity of the metal-insulator transition. The size of the molecular orbital energy level splitting plays a key role in producing the superconductivity of electron-doped hydrocarbon solids. The multi-band nature of hydrocarbon solids would boost the superconductivity through the enhanced density of states at the Fermi level.

Electronic Structures and Phonon Spectra in Boronitride Superconductors LaMBN (M= Ni, Pt)

We have investigated electronic structures and phonon spectra of newly discovered isostructural superconductors LaNiBN (T_c = 4.1 K) and LaPtBN (T_c = 6.7 K). We have found that their electronic structures are substantially three-dimensional, leading to metallicity both in NiB (PtB) and the intervening LaN layers. Our ab initio phonon calculations show that almost all phonon modes contribute to the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) mechanism, reflecting that both layers are involved in the superconductivity. For LaNiBN, we obtain an EPC strength of λ= 0.52 and a logarithmically averaged characteristic phonon frequency of ω_{log} = 376 K, leading to T_c = 3.9 K. Compared with the Ni B_{1g} mode in LaNiBN, the Pt B_{1g} mode in LaPtBN is reduced by ~70%, leading to a slightly enhanced λ= 0.56 and an ~20 % reduced ω_{log}. The estimated T_c is 5.4 K for LaPtBN, in good agreement with the experiment. We do not find any indication of magnetic instability for either LaNiBN or LaPtBN, which implies that both systems are EPC mediated superconductors. Further, we have found an interesting trend of monotonic increase of T_c with respect to the boron height in the NiB (PtB) layer of both borocarbide and boronitride superconductors, which suggests a possible way to enhance T_c in these systems.

Kink during the formation of the Kondo resonance band in the heavy fermion system

We have investigated the formation of the Kondo resonance (KR) band and the hybridization gap (HG) in the heavy fermion compound CeCoGe2, using a combined approach of the density functional theory (DFT) and the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Low temperature (T) spec-tral functions show dispersive KR states, similarly to the recent experimental observation. During the evolution from the nonf conduction band state at high T to the dispersive KR band state at low T, which have topologically different band shapes, we have found the existence of kinks in the spectral function near EF . The observation of kink is clearly in correspondence with the multiple temperature scale of the formation of the KR band. We suggest that the detailed analysis on the abrupt change of electron velocity and the scattering rate near the Fermi level will provide crucial information for the heavy fermion system.

Quantum Oscillations of the Metallic Triangular-lattice Antiferromagnet PdCrO2

We report the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations and first-principle calculations for triangular antiferromagnet PdCrO2 showing unconventional anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The dHvA oscillations in PdCrO2 reveal presence of several 2 dimensional Fermi surfaces of smaller size than found in nonmagnetic PdCoO2. This evidences Fermi surface reconstruction due to the non-collinear 120 antiferromagnetic ordering of the localized Cr, consistent with the first principle calculations. The temperature dependence of dHvA oscillations shows no signature of additional modification of Cr spin structure below TN. Considering that the 120 helical ordering of Cr spins has a zero scalar spin chirality, our results suggest that PdCrO2 is a rare example of the metallic triangular antiferromagnets whose unconventional AHE can not be understood in terms of the spin chirality mechanism.

Correlation Assisted Phonon Softenings and the Mott-Peierls Transition in VO$_{2}$

To explore the driving mechanisms of the metal-insulator transition (MIT) and the structural transition in VO2, we have investigated phonon dispersions of rutile VO2 (R-VO2) in the DFT and the DFT+U (U : Coulomb correlation) band calculations. We have found that the phonon softening instabilities occur in both cases, but the softened phonon mode only in the DFT+U describes properly both the MIT and the structural transition from R-VO2 to monoclinic VO2 (M1-VO2). This feature demonstrates that the Coulomb correlation effect plays an essential role of assisting the Peierls transition in R-VO2. We have also found from the phonon dispersion of M1-VO2 that M1 structure becomes unstable under high pressure. We have predicted a new phase of VO2 at high pressure that has a monoclinic CaCl2-type structure with metallic nature.

Effects of the Spin-Orbit Coupling and the Superconductivity in simple-cubic alpha-Polonium

We have investigated the mechanism of stabilizing the simple-cubic (SC) structure in polonium (alpha- Po), based on the phonon dispersion calculations using the first-principles all-electron band method. We have demonstrated that the stable SC structure results from the suppression of the Peierls instability due to the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in alpha-Po. Further, we have explored the possible superconductivity in alpha-Po, and predicted that it becomes a superconductor with Tc ~ 4 K. The transverse soft phonon mode at q ~ 2/3 R, which is greatly influenced by the SOC, plays an important role both in the structural stability and the superconductivity in alpha-Po. We have discussed effects of the SOC and the volume variation on the phonon dispersions and superconducting properties of alpha-Po.

Electron and phonon band-structure calculations for the antipolar SrPt$_{3}$P antiperovskite superconductor: Evidence of low-energy two-dimensional phonons

SrPt3P has recently been reported to exhibit superconductivity with Tc = 8.4 K. To explore its superconducting mechanism, we have performed electron and phonon band calculations based on the density functional theory, and found that the superconductivity in SrPt3P is well described by the strong coupling phonon-mediated mechanism. We have demonstrated that superconducting charge carriers come from pdπ-hybridized bands between Pt and P ions, which couple to low energy (~ 5 meV) phonon modes confined on the ab in-plane. These in-plane phonon modes, which do not break antipolar nature of SrPt3P, enhance both the electron-phonon coupling constant λand the critical temperature Tc. There is no hint of a specific phonon softening feature in the phonon dispersion, and the effect of the spin-orbit coupling on the superconductivity is found to be negligible.

Magnetic couplings, optical spectra, and spin-orbit exciton in 5d electron Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

Based on the microscopic model including strong spin-orbit coupling, on-site Coulomb and Hund's interactions, as well as crystal field effects, we have investigated magnetic and optical properties of Sr2IrO4. Taking into account all possible intermediate state multiplets generated by virtual hoppings of electrons, we calculated the isotropic Heisenberg, pseudodipolar, and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya coupling constants, which describe the experiment quite well. We have also evaluated the optical conductivity σ(ω) by employing the exact diagonalization method on small clusters, and obtained two peaks at \sim 0.5 and \sim 1.0 eV in agreement with experiment. The two peak structure of σ(ω) arises from the unusual Fano-type overlap between electron-hole continuum of the Jeff = 1/2 band and the intrasite spin-orbit exciton observed recently in Sr2IrO4 by resonant x-ray scattering.

Density functional calculations of the electronic structure and magnetic properties of the hydrocarbon K3picene superconductor near the metal-insulator transition

We have investigated the electronic structures and magnetic properties of of K3picene, which is a first hydrocarbon superconductor with high transition temperature T_c=18K. We have shown that the metal-insulator transition (MIT) is driven in K3picene by 5% volume enhancement with a formation of local magnetic moment. Active bands for superconductivity near the Fermi level E_F are found to have hybridized character of LUMO and LUMO+1 picene molecular orbitals. Fermi surfaces of K3picene manifest neither prominent nesting feature nor marked two-dimensional behavior. By estimating the ratio of the Coulomb interaction U and the band width W of the active bands near E_F, U/W, we have demonstrated that K3picene is located in the vicinity of the Mott transition.

Fermi Surface Reconstruction in CeTe2 Induced by Charge Density Wave: ARPES Study

Electronic structures of a charge-density-wave CDW system CeTe_2-xSb_x (x=0, 0.05) have been investigated by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The observed Fermi surface (FS) agrees very well with the calculated FS for the undistorted CeTe_2 both in shapes and sizes. The metallic states crossing the Fermi level(E_F) are observed in ARPES. The carriers near E_F have mainly the Te(1) 5p character, with the negligible contribution from Ce 4f states to the CDW formation. The supercell (shadow) bands and the corresponding very weak FS's are found to arise from band-folding due to the interaction with Ce-Te(2) layers. This work shows that the origin of the CDW formation in CeTe_2 is the FS nesting and that the CDW modulation vector is along Gamma-X (Q_CDW ~ X)

Mott physics in $2p$ electron dioxygenyl magnet : O$_{2}$$M$F$_{6}$ ($M$=Sb, Pt)

We have investigated electronic structures and magnetic properties of O$_{2}$$M$F$_{6}$ ($M$=Sb, Pt), which are composed of two building blocks of strongly correlated electrons: O$_{2}^{+}$ dioxygenyls and $M$F$_{6}^{-}$ octahedra, by employing the first-principles electronic structure band method. For O$_{2}$SbF$_{6}$, as a reference system of O$_{2}$PtF$_{6}$, we have shown that the Coulomb correlation of O(2$p$) electrons drives the Mott insulating state. For O$_{2}$PtF$_{6}$, we have demonstrated that the Mott insulating state is induced by the combined effects of the Coulomb correlation of O(2$p$) and Pt(5$d$) electrons and the spin-orbit (SO) interaction of Pt(5$d$) states. The role of the SO interaction in forming the Mott insulating state of O$_{2}$PtF$_{6}$ is similar to the case of Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ that is a prototype of a SO induced Mott system with J$_{eff}=1/2$.

Pressure-induced Phonon Softenings and the Structural and Magnetic Transitions in CrO$_{2}$

To investigate the pressure-induced structural transitions of chromium dioxide (CrO$_{2}$), phonon dispersions and total energy band structures are calculated as a function of pressure. The first structural transition has been confirmed at P$\approx$ 10 GPa from the ground state tetragonal CrO$_{2}$ (t-CrO$_{2}$) of rutile type to orthorhombic CrO$_{2}$ (o-CrO$_{2}$) of CaCl$_{2}$ type. The half-metallic property is found to be preserved in o-CrO$_{2}$. The softening of Raman-active B$_{1g}$ phonon mode, which is responsible for this structural transition, is demonstrated. The second structural transition is found to occur for P$\geq$ 61.1 GPa from ferromagnetic (FM) o-CrO$_{2}$ to nonmagnetic (NM) monoclinic CrO$_{2}$ (m-CrO$_{2}$) of MoO$_{2}$ type, which is related to the softening mode at {\bf q} = R(1/2,0,1/2). The third structural transition has been newly identified at P= 88.8 GPa from m-CrO$_{2}$ to cubic CrO$_{2}$ of CaF$_{2}$ type that is a FM insulator.

Temperature-dependent Fermi surface evolution in heavy fermion CeIrIn5

In Cerium-based heavy electron materials, the 4f electron's magnetic moments bind to the itinerant quasiparticles to form composite heavy quasiparticles at low temperature. The volume of the Fermi surfacein the Brillouin zone incorporates the moments to produce a "large FS" due to the Luttinger theorem. When the 4f electrons are localized free moments, a "small FS" is induced since it contains only broad bands of conduction spd electrons. We have addressed theoretically the evolution of the heavy fermion FS as a function of temperature, using a first principles dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) approach combined with density functional theory (DFT+DMFT). We focus on the archetypical heavy electrons in CeIrIn5, which is believed to be near a quantum critical point. Upon cooling, both the quantum oscillation frequencies and cyclotron masses show logarithmic scaling behavior (~ ln(T_0/T)) with different characteristic temperatures T_0 = 130 and 50 K, respectively. The resistivity coherence peak observed at T ~ 50 K is the result of the competition between the binding of incoherent 4f electrons to the spd conduction electrons at Fermi level and the formation of coherent 4f electrons.

Antiferromagnetic and structural transitions in the superoxide KO2 from first principles: A 2p-electron system with spin-orbital-lattice coupling

KO2 exhibits concomitant antiferromagnetic (AFM) and structural transitions, both of which originate from the open-shell 2p electrons of O$_{2}^{-}$ molecules. The structural transition is accompanied by the coherent tilting of O$_{2}^{-}$ molecular axes. The interplay among the spin-orbital-lattice degrees of freedom in KO2 is investigated by employing the first-principles electronic structure theory and the kinetic-exchange interaction scheme. We have shown that the insulating nature of the high symmetry phase of KO2 at high temperature (T) arises from the combined effect of the spin-orbit coupling and the strong Coulomb correlation of O 2p electrons. In contrast, for the low symmetry phase of KO2 at low T with the tilted O$_{2}^{-}$ molecular axes, the band gap and the orbital ordering are driven by the combined effects of the crystal-field and the strong Coulomb correlation. We have verified that the emergence of the O 2p ferro-orbital ordering is essential to achieve the observed AFM structure for KO2.

Electronic structures and ferromagnetism in transition metals codoped ZnO

We have investigated electronic structures and magnetic properties of potential ZnO based diluted magnetic semiconductors: (Fe, Co) and (Fe, Cu) codoped ZnO. The origins of ferromagnetism are shown to be different between two. (Fe, Co) codoped ZnO does not have a tendency of Fe-O-Co ferromagnetic cluster formation, and so the double exchange mechanism will not be effective. In contrast, (Fe, Cu) codoped ZnO has a tendency of the Fe-O-Cu ferromagnetic cluster formation with the charge transfer between Fe and Cu, which would lead to the ferromagnetism through the double-exchange mechanism. The ferromagnetic and nearly half-metallic ground state is obtained for (Fe, Cu) codoped ZnO.

Half-metallic antiferromagnets in double perovskites: LaAVRuO$_6$ (A=Ca, Sr, and Ba)

Based on the theoretical exploration of electronic structures, we propose that the ordered double perovskites LaAVRuO$_6$ and LaVO$_3$/ARuO$_3$ (001) superlattice (A = Ca, Sr and Ba) are strong candidates for half-metallic (HM) antiferromagnets (AFMs). %LaAVRuO$_6$ and LaVO$_3$/ARuO$_3$ have the %100% spin polarizations at the Fermi level but with zero %total magnetic moments. We have shown that the HM-AFM nature in LaAVRuO$_6$ is very robust regardless of (i) divalent ion replacement at A-sites, (ii) oxygen site relaxation, (iii) the inclusion of the Coulomb correlation, and (iv) cation disorder. A type of the double exchange interaction is expected to be responsible for the half-metallicity and the antiferromagnetism in these systems.

Effect of Quantum Confinement on Electron Tunneling through a Quantum Dot

Employing the Anderson impurity model, we study tunneling properties through an ideal quantum dot near the conductance minima. Considering the Coulomb blockade and the quantum confinement on an equal footing, we have obtained current contributions from various types of tunneling processes; inelastic cotunneling, elastic cotunneling, and resonant tunneling of thermally activated electrons. We have found that the inelastic cotunneling is suppressed in the quantum confinement limit, and thus the conductance near its minima is determined by the elastic cotunneling at low temperature ($k_BT \ll Γ$, $Γ$: dot-reservoir coupling constant), or by the resonant tunneling of single electrons at high temperature ($k_BT \gg Γ$).
