Persistent superfluid flow arising from the He-McKellar-Wilkens effect in molecular dipolar condensates

We show that the He-McKellar-Wilkens effect can induce a persistent flow in a Bose-Einstein condensate of polar molecules confined in a toroidal trap, with the dipolar interaction mediated via an electric dipole moment. For Bose-Einstein condensates of atoms with a magnetic dipole moment, we show that although it is theoretically possible to induce persistent flow via the Aharonov-Casher effect, the strength of electric field required is prohibitive. We also outline an experimental geometry tailored specifically for observing the He-McKellar-Wilkens effect in toroidally-trapped condensates.

A Possible Connection Between Massive Fermions and Dark Energy

In a dense cloud of massive fermions interacting by exchange of a light scalar field, the effective mass of the fermion can become negligibly small. As the cloud expands, the effective mass and the total energy density eventually increase with decreasing density. In this regime, the pressure-density relation can approximate that required for dark energy. We apply this phenomenon to the expansion of the Universe with a very light scalar field and infer relations between the parameters available and cosmological observations. Majorana neutrinos at a mass that may have been recently determined, and fermions such as the Lightest Supersymmetric Particle (LSP) may both be consistent with current observations of dark energy.

Epoch Dependent Dark Energy

We present a model in which the equation of state parameter w approaches -1 near a particular value of z, and has significant negative values in a restricted range of z. For example, one can have w ~ -1 near z = 1, and w > -0.2 from z = 0 to z = 0.3, and for z > 9. The ingredients of the model are neutral fermions (which may be neutrinos, neutralinos, etc) which are very weakly coupled to a light scalar field. This model emphasises the importance of the proposed studies of the properties of dark energy into the region z > 1.

Multichannel oscillations and relations between LSND, KARMEN and MiniBooNE, with and without CP violation

We show by examples that multichannel mixing can affect both the parameters extracted from neutrino oscillation experiments, and that more general conclusions derived by fitting the experimental data under the assumption that only two channels are involved in the mixing. Implications for MiniBooNE are noted and an example based on maximal CP violation displays profound implications for the two data sets (muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino) of that experiment.

The Type-II Singular See-Saw Mechanism

The singular see-saw mechanism is a variation of the see-saw mechanism whereby the right-chiral neutrino Majorana mass matrix is singular. Previous works employing the singular see-saw mechanism have assumed a vanishing left-chiral Majorana mass matrix. We study the neutrino spectrum obtained under a singular see-saw mechanism when the left-chiral neutrinos possess a non-zero Majorana mass matrix. We refer to this as the type-II singular see-saw mechanism. The resulting neutrino spectrum is found to be sensitive to the hierarchy of the Dirac and Majorana mass scales used and we explore the phenomenological consequences of the candidate hierarchies. The compatibility of the resulting spectra with the body of neutrino oscillation data is discussed. It is found that neutrino mass matrices with this structure result in 3+1 or 2+2 neutrino spectra, making it unlikely that this mass matrix structure is realized in nature. If the left-chiral Majorana mass matrix is also singular we show that a type-II singular see-saw mechanism can realize a spectrum of one active-sterile pseudo-Dirac neutrino in conjunction with two active Majorana neutrinos effectively decoupled from the sterile sector. This realizes a scheme discussed in the literature in relation to astrophysical neutrino fluxes.

Large Mixing from Small: Pseudo-Dirac Neutrinos and the Singular Seesaw

If the sterile neutrino mass matrix in an otherwise conventional seesaw model has a rank less than the number of flavors, it is possible to produce pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. In a two-flavor, sterile rank 1 case, we demonstrate analytic conditions for large active mixing induced by the existence of (and coupling to) the sterile neutrino components. For the three-flavor, rank 1 case, ``3+2'' scenarios with large mixing also devolve naturally as we show by numerical examples. We observe that, in this approach, small mass differences can develop naturally without any requirement that masses themselves are small. Additionally, we show that significant three channel mixing and limited experimental resolution can combine to produce extracted two channel mixing parameters at variance with the actual values.

3+2 neutrinos in a see-saw variation

If the sterile neutrino mass matrix in an otherwise conventional see-saw model has a rank less than the number of flavors, it is possible to produce pseudo-Dirac neutrinos. For the rank 1 case, 3+2 scenarios devolve naturally, as we show by example. Additionally, we find that the lower rank see-saw suppresses some mass differences, so that small mass differences do not require that the individual masses of each neutrino must also be small.

Implications of Quark-Lepton Symmetry for Neutrino Masses and Oscillations

We identify a plausible scenario based on quark-lepton symmetry which correlates long baseline oscillations with maximal mixing to sterile neutrinos. The implication for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is that the neutral current signal will be found to suffer the same suppression from the Standard Solar Model prediction as obtains for the charged current signal. Flavor mixing among active neutrinos is expected to occur on shorter baselines with smaller mixing amplitudes.

Tritium Beta Decay, Neutrino Mass Matrices and Interactions Beyond the Standard Model

The interference of charge-changing interactions, weaker than the V-A Standard Model (SM) interaction and having a different Lorentz structure, with that SM interaction, can, in principle, produce effects near the end point of the Tritium beta decay spectrum which are of a different character from those produced by the purely kinematic effect of neutrino mass expected in the simplest extension of the SM. We show that the existence of more than one mass eigenstate can lead to interference effects at the end point that are stronger than those occurring over the entire spectrum. We discuss these effects both for the special case of Dirac neutrinos and the more general case of Majorana neutrinos and show that, for the present precision of the experiments, one formula should suffice to express the interference effects in all cases. Implications for "sterile" neutrinos are noted.

$ε'/ε$ And Anomalous Gauge Boson Couplings

We study $ε'/ε$ in the Standard Model and $ε'/ε$ due to anomalous $WWγ$ and $WWZ$ interactions %using recent result on the top quark mass from CDF. as a function of the top quark mass. In the Standard Model, $ε'/ε$ is in the range $10^{-3} \sim 10^{-4}$ for the central value of top quark mass reported by CDF. The anomalous gauge couplings can have large contributions to the $CP$ violating $I=2$ amplitude in $K \rightarrow ππ$. Within the allowed regions for the anomalous gauge couplings, $ε'/ε$ can be dramatically different from the standard model prediction.

CP Violating Effects in $e^+e^-\rightarrow ZH$ and Their Optimization

We consider the possibilities of testing CP conservation in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow ZH$. The easiest is to measure the forward-backward asymmetry of the $Z$ boson, a nonzero value of which signals CP violation. The effects of CP violation are predicted in the two Higgs doublet model. We show here that a choise of optimal observables can improve the possibility of observing CP violation. Although the number of events is not large, useful information about CP violating parameters can be extracted.

Transverse Polarization of Top Quarks Produced at a Photon-Photon Collider

At future $γγ$ colliders copious production of $t \bar{t}$ pairs is possible. This would allow a detailed investigation of the interactions involving the top quark. We propose some orrelations which are sensitive to $t \bar{t}$ final state interactions and we compute the QCD and standard model Higgs boson contributions to these correlations. QCD induced transverse polarization of top quarks is found to be sizeable and measurable at a high-energy $e^+e^-$ collider with an integrated luminosity of 10 $({\rm fb})^{-1}$ which is converted into a photon collider by backscattering of laser photons.

CP Test in the W Pair Production via Photon Fusion at NLC

We study the possibility to test CP invariance in the $W^+W^-$ production via photon fusion at NLC. The predictions of the CP violation effects are made within two Higgs doublet extensions of the minimal standard model, where CP violation is introduced by a neutral Higgs exchange in s channel in our case. The width effect in the Higgs propagator on the CP violation effects is studied in detail. The CP violation effects can be measured in some parameter region of the extensions.

CP Violating Form Factors for Three Gauge Boson Vertex in the Two Higgs Doublet and Left-Right symmetric Models

In this paper we calculate the one loop contributions to the CP violating three gauge boson couplings in two-Higgs doublet and Left--Right symmetric models. In the two-Higgs doublet model only a P conserving and CP violating coupling is generated, and it can be large as $10^{-3}$. In the Left--Right symmetric model both P conserving and violating couplings are generated. Due to constraints on the $W_L$--$W_R$ mixing, these couplings are small.
