Testing the presence of CP violation in the 2HDM

We review CP properties of the Two-Higgs-Doublet model. In particular, we show that spontaneous CP violation occurs in the parameter space on the border between regions allowing explicit CP violation and those where there is another minimum, deeper than the one corresponding to v=246 GeV. We discuss weak-basis invariants which describe CP violation and express them through measurable quantities like coupling constants and masses. Also, we discuss how CP violation is constrained by the LHC Higgs data. Finally, we identify effective operators that could be adopted to measure CP-invariants.

Diagnosing CP properties of the 2HDM

We have investigated a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM), focusing on CP violation. Various scenarios with spontaneous and explicit breaking of CP have been considered. Some features of CP violation related to a choice of the basis for the two Higgs doublets have been discussed and clarified. Regions in the physical parameter space corresponding to spontaneous and explicit CP violation have been located and discussed. The possibility to determine parameters of the scalar potential with no reference to Yukawa couplings has been considered and an unavoidable ambiguity has been found. The issue of disentangling spontaneous and explicit CP violation has been investigated.

Measuring CP violation in Two-Higgs-Doublet models in light of the LHC Higgs data

In Two-Higgs-Doublet models, the conditions for CP violation can be expressed in terms of invariants under U(2) rotations among the two SU(2) Higgs doublet fields. In order to design a strategy for measuring the invariants we express them in terms of observables, i.e., masses and couplings of scalar bosons. We find amplitudes directly sensitive to the invariants. Observation of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson at the LHC severely constrains the models. In particular, in the model with Z_2 symmetry imposed on dimension-4 terms (in order to eliminate tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents), CP violation is strongly suppressed. On the other hand, the most general Two-Higgs-Doublet model (without Z_2 symmetry) would still allow for CP violation to be present in the model, without being in conflict with the LHC data. Consequently, also flavour-changing neutral currents would in general be expected. We briefly sketch a strategy for measuring the remaining CP violation.

Exploring the CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model

We have explored properties of an extension of the Inert Doublet Model by the addition of an extra non-inert scalar doublet. The model offers a possibility of CP violation in the scalar sector and a candidate for the Dark Matter. Allowed regions in the plane spanned by the mass of the Dark-Matter particle and the lightest neutral Higgs particle have been identified, and constraints from direct and indirect-detection experiments have been studied. For favorable parameter regions one may observe long-lived charged particles produced at the LHC.

Update on the CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model

We have updated a recently proposed extension of the Inert Doublet Model. The extension amounts to the addition of an extra non-inert scalar doublet. The model thus offers a possibility of CP violation in the scalar sector and a candidate for the Dark Matter. The recent XENON100 direct-detection experiment excludes a considerable range of medium-low dark-matter masses, leaving only as viable very low masses of order 5-10 GeV, as well as the regions from \sim 60 to \sim 110 GeV, and above \sim 530 GeV. For favorable parameter regions one may observe related long-lived charged particles produced at the LHC.

A Natural Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We discuss phenomenological consequences of requiring the cancellation of one-loop quadratic divergences in corrections to scalar masses within Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM). It is shown that the Inert Doublet Model (IDM) can not accommodate the requirement of the cancellation. A general 2HDM is also analyzed taking into account existing experimental constraints. Allowed regions in the parameter space, permitting the above cancellation, are determined. A degeneracy between masses of scalar bosons is observed for tanbeta \gsim 40. The possibility for CP violation in the scalar potential is discussed and regions of tanbeta-M_{H^\pm} with substantial amount of CP violation are determined. In order to provide a source for dark matter in a minimal manner, a scalar gauge singlet is introduced and discussed. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by lifting the minimal scalar Higgs boson mass and by suppressing the one-loop quadratic corrections to scalar masses. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is therefore lifted to \gsim 15 TeV depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

The scalar sector of the Randall-Sundrum model

We derive the effective potential for the Standard Model Higgs-boson sector interacting with Kaluza-Klein excitations of the graviton ($h_μ^{νn}$) and the radion ($ϕ$) and show that {\it only} the Standard Model vacuum solution of $\partial V(h)/\partial h =0$ (h is the Higgs field) is allowed. We then consider the consequences of the curvature-scalar mixing xi R \Hhat^\dagger \Hhat$ (where $\Hhat$ is a Higgs doublet field on the visible brane), which causes the physical mass eigenstates h and $ϕ$ to be mixtures of the original Higgs and radion fields. First, we discuss the theoretical constraints on the allowed parameter space. Next, we give precise procedures for computing the h and $ϕ$ couplings given the {\it physical} eigenstate masses, mh and $\mphi$, xi and the new physics scales of the model. We show that LEP/LEP2 data implies that not both the h and $ϕ$ can be light. In the allowed region of parameter space, we examine numerically the couplings and branching ratios of the h and $ϕ$ for several cases with $\mh=120\gev$ and $\mphi\leq 300\gev$. The resulting prospects for detection of the h and $ϕ$ at the LHC, a future LC and a $\gam\gam$ collider are reviewed. For moderate $|ξ|$, both the anomalous $h\to gg$ coupling and (when $\mh>2\mphi$) the non-standard decay channel $h \to ϕϕ$ can substantially impact h discovery. Presence of the latter is a direct signature for non-zero xi. We find that $BR(h \to ϕϕ)$ as large as $30 ÷40 %$ is possible when $|ξ|$ is large. Conversely, if $\mphi>2\mh$ then $BR(ϕ\to hh)$ is generally large. The feasibility of experimentally measuring the anomalous gg and $\gam\gam$ couplings of the h and $ϕ$ is examined.

CP Violation in Higgs-Boson Interactions

We consider a general two-Higgs-doublet model with CP violation in the scalar sector, that leads, at the one-loop level of the perturbation expansion, to CP-violation in the process $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t} \to l^\pm ...$ and $e^+e^- \to t\bar{t} \to b/\bar{b} ...$. The goal of this study is to include {\it consistently} CP-violating effects in distributions of top-quark decay products ($l^\pm$ or $b/\bar{b}$) that emerge {\it both} from $t\bar{t}$ production {\it and} from $t$ or $\bar{t}$ decay processes.

Signals of CP Violation in Distributions of Top-Quark Decay Products at Linear Colliders

Angular and energy distributions for leptons and bottom quarks in the process e+e- --> t tbar --> l/b ... have been calculated assuming the most general top-quark couplings. The double distributions depend both on modification of the top-quark production and tbW decay vertices. However, the leptonic angular distribution turned out to be insensitive to non-standard parts of tbW vertex. The method of optimal observables have been used to estimate sensitivity of future measurements at linear e+e- colliders

Finding the CP-Violating Higgs Bosons at e^+e^- Colliders

We discuss a general two-Higgs-doublet model with CP violation in the Higgs sector. In general, the three neutral Higgs fields of the model all mix and the resulting physical Higgs bosons have no definite CP properties. We derive a new sum rule relating Yukawa and Higgs-Z couplings which implies that a neutral Higgs boson cannot escape detection at an e^+e^- collider if it is kinematically accessible in Z+Higgs, $b\anti b+$Higgs and $t\anti t+$Higgs production, irrespective of the mixing angles and the masses of the other neutral Higgs bosons. We also discuss modifications of the sum rules and their phenomenological consequences in the case when the two-doublet Higgs sector is extended by adding one or more singlets.

CP Violation, Top Quarks and the Tevatron Upgrade

In order to observe a signal of possible CP violation in top-quark couplings, we study top-quark production and decay under the conditions of the Tevatron upgrade. Transverse energy asymmetries sensitive to CP violation are defined. Applying the recently proposed optimal method, we calculate the statistical significance for the direct observation of CP violation in the production and subsequent decay of top quarks.

Using Decay Angle Correlations to Detect CP Violation in the Neutral Higgs Sector

We demonstrate that decay angle correlations in $\taum\taup$ and $t\anti t$ decay modes could allow a determination of whether or not a neutral Higgs boson is a CP eigenstate. Sensitivity of the correlations is illustrated in the case of the $\epem\rta Z \hn$ and $\mupmum\rta \hn$ production processes for a two-doublet Higgs model with CP-violating neutral sector. A very useful technique for minimizing `depolarization-factor' suppressions of the correlations in the $t\anti t$ mode is introduced.

CP Violation in {\boldmath $H \ra t \overline{t}$} Decays at {\boldmath $\epem$} Colliders

A helicity asymmetry for top quarks originating from Higgs boson decays is investigated within the 2-Higgs Doublet Model. The asymmetry is sensitive to CP violation in the scalar sector of the model, whereas it vanishes in the Standard Model. It has been checked that without any fine tuning of parameters the asymmetry can reach $50\%$. Standard decay patterns $\twbdec$ and $\tbwbdec$ are utilized as spin analyzers to measure the asymmetry. The Higgs production mechanism considered here is $\hprod$. It has been shown that signal from the asymmetry can easy overcome the noise for Higgs bosons produced in future linear $\epem$ colliders at energy $\sqrt{s}=500\gev$ operating with integrated luminosity $L=2.0\times10^4\lumun$.

Using Back-Scattered Laser Beams to Detect CP Violation in the Neutral Higgs Sector

We demonstrate that the ability to polarize the photons produced by back-scattering laser beams at a TeV scale linear $\epem$ collider could make it possible to determine whether or not a neutral Higgs boson produced in photon-photon collisions is a CP eigenstate. The relative utility of different types of polarization is discussed. Asymmetries that are only non-zero if the Higgs boson is a CP mixture are defined, and their magnitudes illustrated for a two-doublet Higgs model with CP-violating neutral sector.
