Systematic analysis of 3HDM symmetries

Symmetries play a crucial role in shaping the structure and predictions of multi-Higgs-doublet models. In three-Higgs-doublet models considerable effort has been put into classifying possible symmetry groups and the conditions for their realisation, yet the completeness of existing classifications remains an open question. In this work, we revisit the problem of identifying realisable symmetries by re-examining conventional Higgs family and general CP transformations from an alternative perspective. Our analysis identifies certain limitations in previous approaches and introduces a clearer, more systematic framework for model builders. We expand our classification by investigating more generalised symmetry structures -- the recently identified GOOFy transformations, which act non-trivially on the Higgs doublets and their conjugates. Our analysis consolidates known results, uncovers previously overlooked structures, and expands the set of symmetries in three-Higgs-doublet models, offering both a clearer theoretical foundation and a practical reference for symmetry-based model building.

Bounds on the mass and mixing of $Z^\prime$ and $W^\prime$ bosons decaying into different pairings of $W$, $Z$, or Higgs bosons using CMS data at the LHC

The full CMS Run 2 datasets with time-integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{-1}$ in the diboson channels are used to probe benchmark models with extended gauge sectors such as $E_6$, left-right symmetric (LR) and the sequential standard model (extended gauge model, EGM), that predict the existence of neutral $Z'$- and charged $W'$-bosons decaying to a pair of bosons $WW$, $ZH$, $WZ$ and $WH$ in the semileptonic final state. These benchmark models are used to interpret the results. Exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. on the $Z'$ and $W'$ resonance production cross section times branching ratio to electroweak gauge boson pairs in the resonance mass range between 1.0 and 4.5 TeV are here converted to constraints on $Z$-$Z'$ and $W$-$W'$ mixing parameters and masses. We present exclusion regions on the parameter spaces of the $Z'$ and $W'$ and show that the obtained exclusion regions are significantly extended compared to those derived from the previous analysis performed with Tevatron data as well as with the CMS data collected at 7 and 8 TeV in Run 1. The reported limits are the most restrictive to date.

Dark matter in three-Higgs-doublet models with $S_3$ symmetry

Models with two or more scalar doublets with discrete or global symmetries can have vacua with vanishing vacuum expectation values in the bases where symmetries are imposed. If a suitable symmetry stabilises such vacua, these models may lead to interesting dark matter candidates, provided that the symmetry prevents couplings among the dark matter candidates and the fermions. We analyse three-Higgs-doublet models with an underlying $S_3$ symmetry. These models have many distinct vacua with one or two vanishing vacuum expectation values which can be stabilised by a remnant of the $S_3$ symmetry which survived spontaneous symmetry breaking. We discuss all possible vacua in the context of $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet models, allowing also for softly broken $S_3$, and explore one of the vacuum configurations in detail. In the case we explore, only one of the three Higgs doublets is inert. The other two are active, and therefore the active sector, in many aspects, behaves like a two-Higgs-doublet model. The way the fermions couple to the scalar sector is constrained by the $S_3$ symmetry and is such that the flavour structure of the model is solely governed by the $V_\text{CKM}$ matrix which, in our framework, is not constrained by the $S_3$ symmetry. This is a key requirement for models with minimal flavour violation. In our model there is no CP violation in the scalar sector. We study this model in detail giving the masses and couplings and identifying the range of parameters that are compatible with theoretical and experimental constraints, both from accelerator physics and from astrophysics.

Light scalars in the Weinberg 3HDM potential with spontaneous CP violation

The $\mathbb Z_2\times \mathbb Z_2$-symmetric 3HDM potential, sometimes called Weinberg's 3HDM potential, can accommodate both explicit and spontaneous CP violation as well as natural flavour conservation and is hence relevant for studies of CP violation coming from a realistic extended Higgs sector. The model has an interesting regime, controlled by a single parameter, where it acquires an approximate global $U(1) \times U(1)$ symmetry which causes CP violating effects to be small and two pseudo-Goldstone bosons to be present in the scalar spectrum. From parameter space scans, we find that, in a realistic implementation featuring an SM-like Higgs boson, this model predominantely leads to the existence of light additional Higgs bosons with a mass lower than the SM-like Higgs boson.

Two dark matter candidates in three-Higgs-doublet models with $S_3$ symmetry

Models with an extended scalar electroweak sector can have vanishing vacuum expectation values in a basis where an underlying symmetry is imposed. Such extensions are very well motivated. If a symmetry prevents couplings between fermions and additional scalars, such scalars could become viable dark matter candidates if some additional criteria are satisfied. We catalogue $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet models, also allowing for softly broken $S_3$-symmetric scalar potential terms, based on whether a specific model could possibly accommodate a dark matter candidate. The variety of the $S_3$-symmetric family models arises due to different possibilities to arrange vacuum expectation values. Such models can have vacua with one or two vanishing vacuum expectation values. In our study we assume that the dark matter candidate is stabilised by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. The $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is a remnant of $S_3$ symmetry which survived spontaneous symmetry breaking, and not superimposed over $S_3$. We explore two models; with an without CP violation. These models have a single dark and two active scalar sectors. The active sectors behave in many aspects like a Type-I two-Higgs-doublet model. The dark matter candidate masses, in two cases, are different from the known (previously studied) models with three scalar doublets. After investigating the models in detail, identifying parameters compatible with both theoretical and experimental constraints, we found that the dark matter candidate mass could be within the range of $[52.5,\,89]~\text{GeV}$ or $[6.5,\,44.5]~\text{GeV}$ for a model with CP violation.

$S_3$-inspired three-Higgs-doublet models: A class with a complex vacuum

In this paper we analyse in detail an $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet model with a specific vacuum configuration. This analysis allows us to illustrate important features of models with several Higgs doublets, such as the possibility of having spontaneous CP violation. We start with a real potential and pick a particularly interesting complex vacuum configuration, which does not violate CP before adding soft breaking terms to the potential. We study the r\^ ole played by different soft symmetry breaking terms. These are essential for our choice of vacuum in order to remove unwanted massless scalars which arise from the spontaneous breaking of an accidental continuous symmetry. We list scalar sector and scalar-gauge sector-couplings for the particular case we consider in detail in this work. Results presented in this paper will be useful for model building, in particular for implementations of models with $S_3$ symmetry and spontaneous CP violation, extensions of the fermionic sector with realistic Yukawa couplings and for Dark Matter studies.

High-precision limits on $W$-$W'$ and $Z$-$Z'$ mixing from diboson production using the full LHC Run 2 ATLAS data set

The full ATLAS Run 2 data set with time-integrated luminosity of 139 fb$^{-1}$ in the diboson channels in hadronic final states is used to probe a simple model with an extended gauge sector (EGM), proposed by Altarelli et al., and often taken as a convenient benchmark by experimentalists. This model accommodates new charged $W'$ and neutral $Z'$ vector bosons with modified trilinear Standard Model gauge couplings, decaying into electroweak gauge boson pairs $WZ$ or $WW$, where $W$/$Z$ decay hadronically. Exclusion limits at the 95% C.L. on the $Z'$ and $W'$ resonance production cross section times branching ratio to electroweak gauge boson pairs in the mass range of $\sim$ 1 - 5 TeV are here converted to constraints on $W$-$W'$ and $Z$-$Z'$ mixing parameters and masses for the EGM. We present exclusion regions on the parameter space of the $W'$ and $Z'$ by using the full Run 2 data set comprised of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC. The obtained exclusion regions are significantly extended compared to those obtained from the previous analysis performed with Tevatron data as well as with LHC data collected at 7 and 8 TeV in Run 1 and are the most stringent bounds to date.

CP Violation in the scalar sector

Models with an extended scalar sector may in principle provide new sources of CP violation originating in the scalar potential. One of the simplest ways to implement this idea is to have CP violation in a two-Higgs-doublet model. Here, it leads to CP violation in trilinear weak gauge boson couplings. We discuss how these couplings are becoming constrained in the alignment limit. In a model with three Higgs doublets, subject to an $S_3$ symmetry, several complex vacua are possible. Some of these, but not all, may lead to spontaneous CP violation.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the $S_3$-symmetric scalar sector

We present a detailed study of the vacua of the $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet potential, specifying the region of parameters where these minimisation solutions occur. We work with a CP conserving scalar potential and analyse the possible real and complex vacua with emphasis on the cases in which the CP symmetry can be spontaneously broken. Results are presented both in the reducible-representation framework of Derman, and in the irreducible-representation framework. Mappings between these are given. Some of these implementations can in principle accommodate dark matter and for that purpose it is important to identify the residual symmetries of the potential after spontaneous symmetry breakdown. We are also concerned with constraints from vacuum stability.

R-parity violating chargino decays at the LHC

Supersymmetric models with R-parity violation (RPV) have become more popular following the lack of any excess of missing energy events at the 8 TeV LHC. To identify such models, the suggested searches generally rely on the decay products of the (effectively) lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP), with signals that depend on the identity of the LSP and the relevant RPV operators. Here we look at the prospects for detecting RPV chargino decays at the LHC and find substantial patches of parameter space in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with possibly spectacular signatures, such as three charged-lepton resonances.

Testing the presence of CP violation in the 2HDM

We review CP properties of the Two-Higgs-Doublet model. In particular, we show that spontaneous CP violation occurs in the parameter space on the border between regions allowing explicit CP violation and those where there is another minimum, deeper than the one corresponding to v=246 GeV. We discuss weak-basis invariants which describe CP violation and express them through measurable quantities like coupling constants and masses. Also, we discuss how CP violation is constrained by the LHC Higgs data. Finally, we identify effective operators that could be adopted to measure CP-invariants.

The Higgs-like boson spin from the center-edge asymmetry in the diphoton channel

We discuss the discrimination of the 125 GeV spin-parity 0^+ Higgs-like boson observed at the LHC, decaying into two photons, H\toγγ, against the hypothesis of a minimally coupled J^{P}=2^+ narrow diphoton resonance with the same mass and giving the same total number of signal events under the peak. We apply, as the basic observable of the analysis, the center-edge asymmetry A_{CE} of the cosine of the polar angle of the produced photons in the diphoton rest frame to distinguish between the tested spin hypotheses. We show that the center-edge asymmetry A_{CE} should provide strong discrimination between the possibilities of spin-0 and spin-2 with graviton-like couplings, depending on the fraction of q\bar{q} production of the spin-2 signal, reaching a {CL}_s<10^{-6} for f_{qq}=0. Indeed, the A_{CE} has the potential to do better than existing analyses for f_{qq}<0.4.

Diagnosing CP properties of the 2HDM

We have investigated a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM), focusing on CP violation. Various scenarios with spontaneous and explicit breaking of CP have been considered. Some features of CP violation related to a choice of the basis for the two Higgs doublets have been discussed and clarified. Regions in the physical parameter space corresponding to spontaneous and explicit CP violation have been located and discussed. The possibility to determine parameters of the scalar potential with no reference to Yukawa couplings has been considered and an unavoidable ambiguity has been found. The issue of disentangling spontaneous and explicit CP violation has been investigated.

Long lived charginos in Natural SUSY?

Supersymmetric models with a small neutralino-chargino mass difference, and as a result metastable charginos, have been a popular topic of investigation in collider phenomenology, e.g. in anomaly-mediated models of supersymmetry breaking. Recently, the absence of any supersymmetric signal at the 8 TeV LHC data has led to significant interest in the so-called Natural SUSY models with light higgsinos. These models also have a naturally small neutralino-chargino mass difference. However, we show here that when relevant indirect constraints from results at the LHC and elsewhere are applied, this possibility is heavily constrained within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM): massive metastable higgsinos are not a signature of Natural SUSY.

Measuring CP violation in Two-Higgs-Doublet models in light of the LHC Higgs data

In Two-Higgs-Doublet models, the conditions for CP violation can be expressed in terms of invariants under U(2) rotations among the two SU(2) Higgs doublet fields. In order to design a strategy for measuring the invariants we express them in terms of observables, i.e., masses and couplings of scalar bosons. We find amplitudes directly sensitive to the invariants. Observation of the Standard-Model-like Higgs boson at the LHC severely constrains the models. In particular, in the model with Z_2 symmetry imposed on dimension-4 terms (in order to eliminate tree-level flavour-changing neutral currents), CP violation is strongly suppressed. On the other hand, the most general Two-Higgs-Doublet model (without Z_2 symmetry) would still allow for CP violation to be present in the model, without being in conflict with the LHC data. Consequently, also flavour-changing neutral currents would in general be expected. We briefly sketch a strategy for measuring the remaining CP violation.

Precise determination of Z-Z' mixing at the CERN LHC

We discuss the expected sensitivity to Z' boson effects in the W^\pm boson pair production process at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The results of a model-dependent analysis of Z' boson effects are presented as constraints on the Z-Z' mixing angle phi and Z' boson mass. The process pp\to W^+W^- + X allows to place stringent constraints on the Z-Z' mixing angle. Specifically, we find that the present LHC bounds on the mixing angle are of the order a few times 10^{-3}, what is of the same order as those derived from the electroweak data. These results were derived from analysis of W-pair production at sqrt{s}=8 TeV and integrated luminosity of 20 fb^{-1}. Further improvement on the constraining of this mixing can be achieved from the analysis of data on WW \to l nu l'nu' (l,l'=e or mu) and WW \to l nu jj final states collected at the LHC with nominal energy and luminosity, 14 TeV and 100 fb^{-1}, and should be phi \sim 10^{-4}-10^{-3}.

Phenomenology of charged scalars in the CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model

We study the production and decay of charged scalars, eta^\pm, in the context of a CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model. The model is an extended version of the Inert Doublet Model with an extra Higgs doublet and provides new sources of CP violation and a dark matter candidate. As compared with the 2HDM, the particle spectrum contains two additional neutral scalars and a charged pair. These particles are subject to a Z_2 symmetry, but can be pair-produced in hadronic collisions. If a charged scalar is included in the pair, it decays to the stable dark-matter candidate (i.e., the lightest neutral inert scalar) plus Standard Model matter that consists of either two jets or a single lepton (from a virtual or real W or Z) plus missing transverse energy. Since the single production channel is available only at hadronic colliders, we consider the Large Hadron Collider environment, hence we discuss experimental perspectives and possible hallmarks of the model, such as events with a displaced vertex.

Unique heavy lepton signature at $e^+e^-$ linear collider with polarized beams

We explore the effects of neutrino and electron mixing with exotic heavy leptons in the process e^+e^-\to W^+W^- within E_6 models. We examine the possibility of uniquely distinguishing and identifying such effects of heavy neutral lepton exchange from Z-Z' mixing within the same class of models and also from analogous ones due to competitor models with anomalous trilinear gauge couplings (AGC) that can lead to very similar experimental signatures at the e^+e^- International Linear Collider (ILC) for \sqrt{s}=350, 500 GeV and 1 TeV. Such clear identification of the model is possible by using a certain double polarization asymmetry. The availability of both beams being polarized plays a crucial role in identifying such exotic-lepton admixture. In addition, the sensitivity of the ILC for probing exotic-lepton admixture is substantially enhanced when the polarization of the produced W^\pm bosons is considered.

Discriminating Z' from anomalous trilinear gauge coupling signatures in e+e- \to W+W- at ILC with polarized beams

New heavy neutral gauge bosons Z' are predicted by many models of physics beyond the Standard Model. It is quite possible that Z's are heavy enough to lie beyond the discovery reach of the CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC, in which case only indirect signatures of Z' exchanges may emerge at future colliders, through deviations of the measured cross sections from the Standard Model predictions. We discuss in this context the foreseeable sensitivity to Z's of W^\pm-pair production cross sections at the e^+e^- International Linear Collider (ILC), especially as regards the potential of distinguishing observable effects of the Z' from analogous ones due to competitor models with anomalous trilinear gauge couplings (AGC) that can lead to the same or similar new physics experimental signatures at the ILC. The sensitivity of the ILC for probing the Z-Z' mixing and its capability to distinguish these two new physics scenarios is substantially enhanced when the polarization of the initial beams and the produced W^\pm bosons are considered. A model independent analysis of the Z' effects in the process e^+e^- \to W^+W^- allows to differentiate the full class of vector Z' models from those with anomalous trilinear gauge couplings, with one notable exception: the sequential SM (SSM)-like models can in this process not be distinguished from anomalous gauge couplings. Results of model dependent analysis of a specific Z' are expressed in terms of discovery and identification reaches on the Z-Z' mixing angle and the Z' mass.

Probing the charged Higgs boson at the LHC in the CP-violating type-II 2HDM

We present a phenomenological study of a CP-violating two-Higgs-doublet Model with type-II Yukawa couplings at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In the light of recent LHC data, we focus on the parameter space that survives the current and past experimental constraints as well as theoretical bounds on the model. Once the phenomenological scenario is set, we analyse the scope of the LHC in exploring this model through the discovery of a charged Higgs boson produced in association with a W boson, with the former decaying into the lightest neutral Higgs and a second W state, altogether yielding a b\bar b W^+W^- signature, of which we exploit the W^+W^- semileptonic decays.

Sneutrino Identification in Lepton Pair Production at ILC with Polarized Beams

Numerous non-standard dynamics are described by contact-like effective interactions that can manifest themselves in electron-positron collisions only through deviations of the observables (cross sections, asymmetries) from the Standard Model predictions. If such a deviation were observed, it would be important to identify the actual source among the possible non-standard interactions as many different new physics scenarios may lead to very similar experimental signatures. We study the possibility of uniquely identifying the indirect effects of s-channel sneutrino exchange, as predicted by supersymmetric theories with R-parity violation, against other new physics scenarios in high-energy e^+e^- annihilation into lepton pairs at the International Linear Collider. These competitive models are interactions based on gravity in large and in TeV-scale extra dimensions, anomalous gauge couplings, Z' vector bosons and compositeness-inspired four-fermion contact interactions. To evaluate the identification reach on sneutrino exchange, we use as basic observable a double polarization asymmetry, that is particularly suitable to directly test for such s-channel sneutrino exchange effects in the data analysis. The availability of both beams being polarized plays a crucial role in identifying the new physics scenario.

Exploring the CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model

We have explored properties of an extension of the Inert Doublet Model by the addition of an extra non-inert scalar doublet. The model offers a possibility of CP violation in the scalar sector and a candidate for the Dark Matter. Allowed regions in the plane spanned by the mass of the Dark-Matter particle and the lightest neutral Higgs particle have been identified, and constraints from direct and indirect-detection experiments have been studied. For favorable parameter regions one may observe long-lived charged particles produced at the LHC.

Supersymmetry with Trilinear R-Parity Violation at the LHC

The inclusion of trilinear R-parity violating couplings in a supersymmetric theory, has monumental impacts on the phenomenology. Regarding LHC physics, we no longer expect events with a lot of missing transverse energy, but events with large lepton and/or jet multiplicity. Here we present a study where the standard MSSM scenario of squark and gluino pair production and consequent cascade decay to the neutralino, is followed by a three-body decay of the neutralino through any of the 45 allowed trilinear R-parity violating operators. This allows us to study all these operators and detect any hierarchies among them as well as measuring the neutralino mass.

Symmetry and Mass Degeneration in Multi-Higgs-Doublet Models

We investigate possible symmetry properties of the scalar sector of Multi-Higgs-Doublet Models, and, to some extent, the generalization of such models to gauge groups other than $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$. In models where the ${\cal C}$ (charge conjugation) violating operator $\hat{C}$ is not present, the scalar potential is invariant under a group larger than the gauge group, O(4) when the Higgs fields are doublets. If the Higgs fields develop aligned vacuum expectation values, this symmetry will break to an O(3) subgroup, which in general is further broken by loop corrections involving the gauge bosons. Assuming such corrections are small, the physical properties of the Higgs sector will approximately organize into representations of SO(3). If the vacuum expectation values of the Higgs fields are aligned in the direction of the ${\cal C}$ even fields, the mass spectra of the charged and ${\cal C}$ odd sectors will be degenerate. Moreover, if the Higgs fields develop a pair of non-aligned vacuum expectations values, so that the charge conjugation symmetry is spontaneously broken (but not the U(1) electromagnetic gauge invariance), a pair of light charged Higgs bosons should appear.

Update on the CP-Violating Inert-Doublet Model

We have updated a recently proposed extension of the Inert Doublet Model. The extension amounts to the addition of an extra non-inert scalar doublet. The model thus offers a possibility of CP violation in the scalar sector and a candidate for the Dark Matter. The recent XENON100 direct-detection experiment excludes a considerable range of medium-low dark-matter masses, leaving only as viable very low masses of order 5-10 GeV, as well as the regions from \sim 60 to \sim 110 GeV, and above \sim 530 GeV. For favorable parameter regions one may observe related long-lived charged particles produced at the LHC.

A Natural Two-Higgs-Doublet Model

We discuss phenomenological consequences of requiring the cancellation of one-loop quadratic divergences in corrections to scalar masses within Two-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM). It is shown that the Inert Doublet Model (IDM) can not accommodate the requirement of the cancellation. A general 2HDM is also analyzed taking into account existing experimental constraints. Allowed regions in the parameter space, permitting the above cancellation, are determined. A degeneracy between masses of scalar bosons is observed for tanbeta \gsim 40. The possibility for CP violation in the scalar potential is discussed and regions of tanbeta-M_{H^\pm} with substantial amount of CP violation are determined. In order to provide a source for dark matter in a minimal manner, a scalar gauge singlet is introduced and discussed. The model allows to ameliorate the little hierarchy problem by lifting the minimal scalar Higgs boson mass and by suppressing the one-loop quadratic corrections to scalar masses. The cutoff originating from the naturality arguments is therefore lifted to \gsim 15 TeV depending on the mass of the lightest scalar.

Photon, Neutrino and Charged Particle Spectra from R-violating Gravitino Decays

We study photonic, neutrino and charged particle signatures from slow decays of gravitino dark matter in supersymmetric theories where R-parity is explicitly broken by trilinear operators. Photons and (anti-)fermions from loop and tree-level processes give rise to spectra with distinct features, which, if observed, can give crucial input on the possible mass of the gravitino and the magnitude and flavour structure of R-violating operators. Within this framework, we make detailed comparisons of the theoretical predictions to the recent experimental data from PAMELA, ATIC and Fermi LAT.

Signals of Warped Extra Dimensions at the LHC

We discuss the signatures of the spin-2 graviton excitations predicted by the Randall-Sundrum model with one warped extra dimension, in dilepton and diphoton production at LHC. By using a specific angular analysis, we assess the ranges in mass and coupling constant where such gravitons can be discriminated against competitor spin-1 and spin-0 objects, that potentially could manifest themselves in these processes with the same mass and rate of events. Depending on the value of the coupling constant to quarks and leptons, the numerical results indicate graviton identification mass ranges up to 1.1-2.4 TeV and 1.6-3.2 TeV for LHC nominal energy of 14 TeV and time-integrated luminosity of 10 and 100~${\rm fb}^{-1}$, respectively.

Sneutrino identification in dilepton events at the LHC

Heavy neutral resonances appearing in the clean Drell-Yan channel may be the first new physics to be observed at the proton-proton CERN LHC. If a new resonance is discovered at the LHC as a (narrow) peak in the dilepton invariant mass distribution, the characterization of its spin and couplings will proceed via the measurement of production rates and angular distributions of the decay products. We discuss the discrimination of a spin-0 resonance (sneutrino) predicted by supersymmetric theories with R-parity breaking against the spin-1 of Z^\prime bosons and the Randall-Sundrum graviton resonance (spin-2) with the same mass and producing the same number of events under the observed peak. To assess the region of sneutrino parameters (couplings and masses) where the spin determination can be performed to a given confidence level, we focus on the event rate and the angular distributions of the Drell-Yan leptons, in particular using the center-edge asymmetry, A_{\rm CE}. We find that although the measured event rate permits solving the above problem partially, the center-edge asymmetry, on the contrary allows to differentiate the various spins entirely with a minimal number of events around 200.

Spin identification of heavy nonstandard bosons in dilepton and diphoton events at the LHC

New Physics scenarios generally predict the existence of very heavy quantum states that can possibly manifest themselves as peaks in the cross sections at the LHC. For values of the parameters in certain domains, different nonstandard models can generate peaks with the same mass and same number of events. In this case, the spin determination of a peak, requiring the angular analysis of the events, becomes crucial in order to identify the relevant nonstandard source. We here discuss, using a particularly suitable symmetrically integrated angular asymmetry applied to Drell-Yan dilepton and diphoton events at LHC, the identification reach on the exchanges in these reactions of the following heavy bosons: spin-2 Randall-Sundrum graviton excitations; spin-1 heavy neutral gauge bosons Z^\prime; and spin-0 SUSY R-parity violating sneutrinos.

This scenario will soon be tested by the Fermi LAT data on diffuse gamma ray emission.

Identification of extra neutral gauge bosons at the International Linear Collider

Heavy neutral gauge bosons, Z's, are predicted by many theoretical schemes of physics beyond the Standard Model, and intensive searches for their signatures will be performed at present and future high energy colliders. It is quite possible that Z's are heavy enough to lie beyond the discovery reach expected at the CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC, in which case only indirect signatures of Z' exchanges may occur at future colliders, through deviations of the measured cross sections from the Standard Model predictions. We here discuss in this context the foreseeable sensitivity to Z's of fermion-pair production cross sections at an e^+e^- linear collider, especially as regards the potential of distinguishing different Z' models once such deviations are observed. Specifically, we assess the discovery and identification reaches on Z' gauge bosons pertinent to the E_6, LR, ALR and SSM classes of models, that should be attained at the planned International Linear Collider (ILC). With the high experimental accuracies expected at the ILC, the discovery and the identification reaches on the Z' models under consideration could be increased substantially. In particular, the identification among the different models could be achieved for values of Z' masses in the discovery (but beyond the identification) reach of the LHC. An important role in enhancing such reaches is played by the electron (and possibly the positron) longitudinally polarized beams. Also, although the purely leptonic processes are experimentally cleaner, the measurements of c- and b-quark pair production cross sections are found to carry important, and complementary, information on these searches.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

New physics signatures at a Linear Collider: model-independent analysis from `conventional' polarized observables

We discuss four-fermion contact-interaction searches in the processes e^+e^-\toμ^+μ^-, c{\bar c} and b{\bar b} at a future e^+e^- Linear Collider with c.m. energy \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV and with both beams longitudinally polarized. Our analysis is based on the measurements of familiar polarized observables such as the total cross section and the forward-backward/left-right asymmetries, and accounts for the general set of contact interaction couplings as independent, non-zero, parameters thus avoiding simplifying, model-dependent, assumptions. We derive the corresponding model-independent constraints on the above-mentioned coupling constants, and evaluate the corresponding reach at the Linear Collider, emphasizing the role of beam polarization. We compare the results with a model-dependent procedure where only one coupling is varied at a time.

In particular, for the processes e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-, τ^+τ^-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at a future e^+e^- collider with \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV we derive model-independent bounds on the four-fermion contact interaction parameters from studies of the helicity cross sections.

Optimal polarized observables for model-independent new-physics search at e+e- colliders

For the processes e+e-\to μ+μ-, τ+τ-, b\bar{b} and c\bar{c} at a future e+e- collider with \sqrt{s}=0.5 TeV, we examine the sensitivity of the helicity cross sections to four-fermion contact interactions. If longitudinal polarization of the electron beam were available, two polarized integrated cross sections would offer the opportunity to separate the helicity cross sections and, in this way, to derive model-independent bounds on the relevant parameters. The measurement of these polarized cross sections with optimal kinematical cuts could significantly increase the sensitivity of helicity cross sections to contact interaction parameters and could give crucial information on the chiral structure of such new interactions.

Higgs boson production in e^+e^- and e^-e^- collisions

When Higgs boson candidates will be found at future colliders, it becomes imperative to determine their properties, beyond the mass, production cross section and decay rates. Other crucial properties are those related to the behaviour under CP transformations, and the self-couplings. This paper addresses the question of measurability of some of the trilinear couplings of MSSM neutral Higgs bosons at a high-energy e^+e^- collider, and the possibilities of exploring the Higgs boson CP properties at e^+e^- and e^-e^- colliders.

Higgs Production: CP Studies in e-e- Collisions

We review the production of scalar Higgs-like particles in high-energy electron-electron collisions, via the fusion of electroweak gauge bosons. The emphasis is on how to distinguish a CP-even from a CP-odd Higgs particle. Among the more significant differences, we find that in the CP-odd case, the Higgs spectrum is much harder, and the dependence of the total cross section on the product of the polarizations of the two beams is much stronger, than in the CP-even case. We also briefly discuss parity violation, and the production of charged Higgs bosons.

Two-loop three-gluon vertex in zero-momentum limit

The two-loop three-gluon vertex is calculated in an arbitrary covariant gauge, in the limit when one of the external momenta vanishes. The differential Ward-Slavnov-Taylor (WST) identity related to this limit is discussed, and the relevant results for the ghost-gluon vertex and two-point functions are obtained. Together with the differential WST identity, they provide another independent way for calculating the three-gluon vertex. The renormalization of the results obtained is also presented.

Three-gluon vertex in arbitrary gauge and dimension

One-loop off-shell contributions to the three-gluon vertex are calculated, in arbitrary covariant gauge and in arbitrary space-time dimension, including quark-loop contributions (with massless quarks). It is shown how one can get the results for all on-shell limits of interest directly from the general off-shell expression. The corresponding general expressions for the one-loop ghost-gluon vertex are also obtained. They allow for a check of consistency with the Ward--Slavnov--Taylor identity.
