The paper is devoted to the analysis of the blow-ups of derivatives, gradient catastrophes and dynamics of mappings of $\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^n$ associated with the $n$-dimensional homogeneous Euler equation. Several characteristic features of the multi-dimensional case ($n>1$) are described. Existence or nonexistence of blow-ups in different dimensions, boundness of certain linear combinations of blow-up derivatives and the first occurrence of the gradient catastrophe are among of them. It is shown that the potential solutions of the Euler equations exhibit blow-up derivatives in any dimenson $n$. Several concrete examples in two- and three-dimensional cases are analysed. Properties of $\mathbb{R}^n_{\underline{u}} \to \mathbb{R}^n_{\underline{x}}$ mappings defined by the hodograph equations are studied, including appearance and disappearance of their singularities.
Eigenfunctions are shown to constitute privileged coordinates of self-dual Einstein spaces with the underlying governing equation being revealed as the general heavenly equation. The formalism developed here may be used to link algorithmically a variety of known heavenly equations. In particular, the classical connection between Plebanski's first and second heavenly equations is retrieved and interpreted in terms of eigenfunctions. In addition, connections with travelling wave reductions of the recently introduced TED equation which constitutes a 4+4-dimensional integrable generalisation of the general heavenly equation are found. These are obtained by means of (partial) Legendre transformations. As a particular application, we prove that a large class of self-dual Einstein spaces governed by a compatible system of dispersionless Hirota equations is genuinely four-dimensional in that the (generic) metrics do not admit any (proper or non-proper) conformal Killing vectors. This generalises the known link between a particular class of self-dual Einstein spaces and the dispersionless Hirota equation encoding three-dimensional Einstein-Weyl geometries.
Singularities of plane into plane mappings described by parabolic two-component systems of quasi-liner partial differential equations of the first order are studied. Impediments arising in the application of the original Whitney's approach to such case are discussed. Hierarchy of singularities is analysed by double-scaling expansion method for the simplest $2$-component Jordan system. It is shown that flex is the lowest singularity while higher singularities are given by $(k+1,k+2)$ curves which are of cusp type for $k=2n+1$, $n=1,2,3,\dots$. Regularization of these singularities by deformation of plane into plane mappings into surface $S^{2+k} (\subset \mathbb{R}^{2+k} ) $ to plane is discussed. Applicability of the proposed approach to other parabolic type mappings is noted.
Changes of type transitions for the two-component hydrodynamic type systems are discussed. It is shown that these systems generically assume the Jordan form (with 2 X 2 Jordan block) on the transition line with hodograph equations becoming parabolic. Conditions which allow or forbid the transition from hyperbolic domain to elliptic one are discussed. Hamiltonian systems and their special subclasses and equations, like dispersionless nonlinear Schroedinger, dispersionless Boussinesq, one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics equations and nonlinear wave equations are studied. Numerical results concerning the crossing of transition line for the dispersionless Boussinesq equation are presented too.
Based on the well-established theory of discrete conjugate nets in discrete differential geometry, we propose and examine discrete analogues of important objects and notions in the theory of semi-Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type. In particular, we present discrete counterparts of (generalised) hodograph equations, hyperelliptic integrals and associated cycles, characteristic speeds of Whitham type and (implicitly) the corresponding Whitham equations. By construction, the intimate relationship with integrable system theory is maintained in the discrete setting.
Algebraic and geometric structures associated with Birkhoff strata of Sato Grassmannian are analyzed. It is shown that each Birkhoff stratum $Σ_S$ contains a subset $W_{\hat{S}}$ of points for which each fiber of the corresponding tautological subbundle $TB_{W_S}$ is closed with respect to multiplication. Algebraically $TB_{W_S}$ is an infinite family of infinite-dimensional commutative associative algebras and geometrically it is an infinite tower of families of algebraic curves. For the big cell the subbundle $TB_{W_\varnothing}$ represents the tower of families of normal rational (Veronese) curves of all degrees. For $W_1$ such tautological subbundle is the family of coordinate rings for elliptic curves. For higher strata, the subbundles $TB_{W_{1,2,\dots,n}}$ represent families of plane $(n+1,n+2)$ curves (trigonal curves at $n=2$) and space curves of genus $n$. Two methods of regularization of singular curves contained in $TB_{W_{\hat{S}}}$, namely, the standard blowing-up and transition to higher strata with the change of genus are discussed.
Cohomological and Poisson structures associated with the special tautological subbundles $TB_{W_{1,2,\dots,n}}$ for the Birkhoff strata of Sato Grassmannian are considered. It is shown that the tangent bundles of $TB_{W_{1,2,\dots,n}}$ are isomorphic to the linear spaces of $2-$coboundaries with vanishing Harrison's cohomology modules. Special class of 2-coboundaries is provided by the systems of integrable quasilinear PDEs. For the big cell it is the dKP hierarchy. It is demonstrated also that the families of ideals for algebraic varieties in $TB_{W_{1,2,\dots,n}}$ can be viewed as the Poisson ideals. This observation establishes a connection between families of algebraic curves in $TB_{W_{\hat{S}}}$ and coisotropic deformations of such curves of zero and nonzero genus described by hierarchies of hydrodynamical type systems like dKP hierarchy. Interrelation between cohomological and Poisson structures is noted.
Structure and properties of families of critical points for classes of functions $W(z,\bar{z})$ obeying the elliptic Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation $E(1/2,1/2)$ are studied. General variational and differential equations governing the dependence of critical points in variational (deformation) parameters are found. Explicit examples of the corresponding integrable quasi-linear differential systems and hierarchies are presented There are the extended dispersionless Toda/nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchies, the "inverse" hierarchy and equations associated with the real-analytic Eisenstein series $E(β,\bar{β};1/2)$among them. Specific bi-Hamiltonian structure of these equations is also discussed.
Integrable flows on the Grassmannians Gr(N-1,N+1) are defined by the requirement of closedness of the differential N-1 forms $Ω_{N-1}$ of rank N-1 naturally associated with Gr(N-1,N+1). Gauge-invariant parts of these flows, given by the systems of the N-1 quasi-linear differential equations, describe coisotropic deformations of (N-1)-dimensional linear subspaces. For the class of solutions which are Laurent polynomials in one variable these systems coincide with N-dimensional integrable systems such as Liouville equation (N=2), dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (N=3), dispersionless Toda equation (N=3), Plebanski second heavenly equation (N=4) and others. Gauge invariant part of the forms $Ω_{N-1}$ provides us with the compact form of the corresponding hierarchies. Dual quasi-linear systems associated with the projectively dual Grassmannians Gr(2,N+1) are defined via the requirement of the closedness of the dual forms $Ω_{N-1}^{\star}$. It is shown that at N=3 the self-dual quasi-linear system, which is associated with the harmonic (closed and co-closed) form $Ω_{2}$, coincides with the Maxwell equations for orthogonal electric and magnetic fields.
We introduce a general setting for multidimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy in terms of differential $m$-form $Ω_m$ with the coefficients satisfying the Plücker relations, which is gauge-invariantly closed and its gauge-invariant coordinates (ratios of coefficients) are (locally) holomorphic with respect to one of the variables (the spectral variable). We demonstrate that this form defines a hierarchy of dispersionless integrable equations in terms of commuting vector fields locally holomorphic in the spectral variable. The equations of the hierarchy are given by the gauge-invariant closedness equations.
Local properties of families of algebraic subsets $W_g$ in Birkhoff strata $Σ_{2g}$ of Gr$^{(2)}$ containing hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ are studied. It is shown that the tangent spaces $T_g$ for $W_g$ are isomorphic to linear spaces of 2-coboundaries. Particular subsets in $W_g$ are described by the intergrable dispersionless coupled KdV systems of hydrodynamical type defining a special class of 2-cocycles and 2-coboundaries in $T_g$. It is demonstrated that the blows-ups of such 2-cocycles and 2-coboundaries and gradient catastrophes for associated integrable systems are interrelated.
Algebraic varieties and curves arising in Birkhoff strata of the Sato Grassmannian Gr${^{(2)}}$ are studied. It is shown that the big cell $Σ_0$ contains the tower of families of the normal rational curves of all odd orders. Strata $Σ_{2n}$, $n=1,2,3,...$ contain hyperelliptic curves of genus $n$ and their coordinate rings. Strata $Σ_{2n+1}$, $n=0,1,2,3,...$ contain $(2m+1,2m+3)-$plane curves for $n=2m,2m-1$ $(m \geq 2)$ and $(3,4)$ and $(3,5)$ curves in $Σ_3$, $Σ_5$ respectively. Curves in the strata $Σ_{2n+1}$ have zero genus.
Gradient catastrophe and flutter instability in the motion of vortex filament within the localized induction approximation are analyzed. It is shown that the origin if this phenomenon is in the gradient catastrophe for the dispersionless Da Rios system which describes motion of filament with slow varying curvature and torsion. Geometrically this catastrophe manifests as a rapid oscillation of a filament curve in a point that resembles the flutter of airfoils. Analytically it is the elliptic umbilic singularity in the terminology of the catastrophe theory. It is demonstrated that its double scaling regularization is governed by the Painlevé-I equation.
A class of Hamiltonian deformations of plane curves is defined and studied. Hamiltonian deformations of conics and cubics are considered as illustrative examples. These deformations are described by systems of hydrodynamical type equations. It is shown that solutions of these systems describe processes of formation of singularities (cusps, nodes), bubbles, and change of genus of a curve.
Coisotropic deformations of algebraic varieties are defined as those for which an ideal of the deformed variety is a Poisson ideal. It is shown that coisotropic deformations of sets of intersection points of plane quadrics, cubics and space algebraic curves are governed, in particular, by the dKP, WDVV, dVN, d2DTL equations and other integrable hydrodynamical type systems. Particular attention is paid to the study of two- and three-dimensional deformations of elliptic curves. Problem of an appropriate choice of Poisson structure is discussed.
Interrelations between discrete deformations of the structure constants for associative algebras and discrete integrable systems are reviewed. A theory of deformations for associative algebras is presented. Closed left ideal generated by the elements representing the multiplication table plays a central role in this theory. Deformations of the structure constants are generated by the Deformation Driving Algebra and governed by the central system of equations. It is demonstrated that many discrete equations like discrete Boussinesq equation, discrete WDVV equation, discrete Schwarzian KP and BKP equations, discrete Hirota-Miwa equations for KP and BKP hierarchies are particular realizations of the central system. An interaction between the theories of discrete integrable systems and discrete deformations of associative algebras is reciprocal and fruitful. An interpretation of the Menelaus relation (discrete Schwarzian KP equation), discrete Hirota-Miwa equation for KP hierarchy, consistency around the cube as the associativity conditions and the concept of gauge equivalence, for instance, between the Menelaus and KP configurations are particular examples.
It is shown that the celebrated Menelaus relation and Fay's trisecant formula similar to the WDVV equation are associativity conditions for structure constants of certain three-dimensional algebra.
Deformations of the structure constants for a class of associative noncommutative algebras generated by Deformation Driving Algebras (DDA's) are defined and studied. These deformations are governed by the Central System (CS). Such a CS is studied for the case of DDA being the algebra of shifts. Concrete examples of deformations for the three-dimensional algebra governed by discrete and mixed continuous-discrete Boussinesq (BSQ) and WDVV equations are presented. It is shown that the theory of the Darboux transformations, at least for the BSQ case, is completely incorporated into the proposed scheme of deformations.
Analytic-bilinear approach for construction and study of integrable hierarchies, in particular, the KP hierarchy is discussed. It is based on the generalized Hirota identity. This approach allows to represent generalized hierarchies of integrable equations in a condensed form of finite functional equations. Resolution of these functional equations leads to the $τ$-function and addition formulae to it. General discrete transformations of the $τ$-function are presented in the determinant form. Closed one-form and other formulae also arise naturally within the approach proposed. Generalized KP hierarchy written in terms of different invariants of Combescure symmetry transformations coincides with the usual KP hierarchy and the mKP hierarchy.
A general scheme is proposed for introduction of lattice and q-difference variables to integrable hierarchies in frame of $\bar{\partial}$-dressing method . Using this scheme, lattice and q-difference Darboux-Zakharov-Manakov systems of equations are derived. Darboux, Bäcklund and Combescure transformations and exact solutions for these systems are studied.
