Fast-timing study of $^{81}$Ga from the $β$ decay of $^{81}$Zn

The $β^{-}$ decay of $^{81}$Zn to the neutron magic $N=50$ nucleus $^{81}$Ga, with only three valence protons with respect to $^{78}$Ni, was investigated. The study was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN by means of $γ$ spectroscopy. The $^{81}$Zn half-life was determined to be $T_{1/2}=290(4)$ ms while the $β$-delayed neutron emission probability was measured as $P_n=23(4)\%$. The analysis of the $β$-gated $γ$-ray singles and $γ$-$γ$ coincidences from the decay of $^{81}$Zn provides 47 new levels and 70 new transitions in $^{81}$Ga. The $β^-$$n$ decay of $^{81}$Zn was observed and a new decay scheme into the odd-odd $^{80}$Ga nucleus was established. The half-lives of the first and second excited states of $^{81}$Ga were measured via the fast-timing method using LaBr$_3$(Ce) detectors. The level scheme and transition rates are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations. The low-lying structure of $^{81}$Ga is interpreted in terms of the coupling of the three valence protons outside the doubly-magic $^{78}$Ni core.

Observation of T=3/2 Isobaric Analog States in 9Be using p+8Li resonance scattering

Background: Resonance scattering has been extensively used to study the structure of exotic, neutron-deficient nuclei. Extension of the resonance scattering technique to neutron-rich nuclei was suggested more than 20 years ago. This development is based on the isospin conservation law. In spite of broad field of the application, it has never gained a wide-spread acceptance. Purpose: To benchmark the experimental approach to study the structure of exotic neutron-rich nuclei through resonance scattering on a proton target. Method: The excitation function for p+8Li resonance scattering is measured using a thick target by recording coincidence between light and heavy recoils, populating T=3/2 isobaric analog states (IAS) in 9Be. Results: A good fit of the 8Li(p,p)8Li resonance elastic scattering excitation function was obtained using previously tentatively known 5/2- T=3/2 state at 18.65 MeV in 9Be and a new broad T=3/2 s-wave state - the 5/2+ at 18.5 MeV. These results fit the expected iso-mirror properties for the T=3/2 A=9 iso-quartet. Conclusions: Our analysis confirmed isospin as a good quantum number for the investigated highly excited T=3/2 states and demonstrated that studying the structure of neutron-rich exotic nuclei through IAS is a promising approach.

Constraining the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C astrophysical S-factors with the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C measurements at very low energies

We use an underground counting lab with an extremely low background to perform an activity measurement for the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C system with energies down to $E\rm_{c.m.}$=2.323 MeV, at which the $^{12}$C($^{13}$C,$p$)$^{24}$Na cross section is found to be 0.22(7) nb. The $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C fusion cross section is derived with a statistical model calibrated using experimental data. Our new result of the $^{12}$C+$^{13}$C fusion cross section is the first decisive evidence in the carbon isotope systems which rules out the existence of the astrophysical S-factor maximum predicted by the phenomenological hindrance model, while confirming the rising trend of the S-factor towards lower energies predicted by other models, such as CC-M3Y+Rep, DC-TDHF, KNS, SPP and ESW. After normalizing the model predictions with our data, a more reliable upper limit is established for the $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C fusion cross sections at stellar energies.

Direct Evidence of Octupole Deformation in Neutron-Rich $^{144}$Ba

The neutron-rich nucleus $^{144}$Ba ($t_{1/2}$=11.5 s) is expected to exhibit some of the strongest octupole correlations among nuclei with mass numbers $A$ less than 200. Until now, indirect evidence for such strong correlations has been inferred from observations such as enhanced $E1$ transitions and interleaving positive- and negative-parity levels in the ground-state band. In this experiment, the octupole strength was measured directly by sub-barrier, multi-step Coulomb excitation of a post-accelerated 650-MeV $^{144}$Ba beam on a 1.0-mg/cm$^2$ $^{208}$Pb target. The measured value of the matrix element, $\langle 3_1^- \| \mathcal{M}(E3) \| 0_1^+ \rangle=0.65(^{+17}_{-23})$ $e$b$^{3/2}$, corresponds to a reduced $B(E3)$ transition probability of 48($^{+25}_{-34}$) W.u. This result represents an unambiguous determination of the octupole collectivity, is larger than any available theoretical prediction, and is consistent with octupole deformation.

Shape coexistence and the role of axial asymmetry in $^{72}$Ge

The quadrupole collectivity of low-lying states and the anomalous behavior of the $0^+_2$ and $2^+_3$ levels in $^{72}$Ge are investigated via projectile multi-step Coulomb excitation with GRETINA and CHICO-2. A total of forty six $E2$ and $M1$ matrix elements connecting fourteen low-lying levels were determined using the least-squares search code, gosia. Evidence for triaxiality and shape coexistence, based on the model-independent shape invariants deduced from the Kumar-Cline sum rule, is presented. These are interpreted using a simple two-state mixing model as well as multistate mixing calculations carried out within the framework of the triaxial rotor model. The results represent a significant milestone towards the understanding of the unusual structure of this nucleus.

The first direct measurement of 12C(12C,n)23Mg at stellar energies

Neutrons produced by the carbon fusion reaction 12C(12C,n)23Mg play an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis. However, past studies have shown large discrepancies between experimental data and theory, leading to an uncertain cross section extrapolation at astrophysical energies. We present the first direct measurement that extends deep into the astrophysical energy range along with a new and improved extrapolation technique based on experimental data from the mirror reaction 12C(12C,p)23Na. The new reaction rate has been determined with a well-defined uncertainty that exceeds the precision required by astrophysics models. Using our constrained rate, we find that 12C(12C,n)23Mg is crucial to the production of Na and Al in Pop-III Pair Instability Supernovae. It also plays a non-negligible role in the production of weak s-process elements as well as in the production of the important galactic gamma-ray emitter 60Fe.

Measurement of the $^{58}$Ni($α$,$γ$)$^{62}$Zn reaction and its astrophysical impact

Cross section measurements of the $^{58}$Ni($α$,$γ$)$^{62}$Zn reaction were performed in the energy range $E_α=5.5-9.5$ MeV at the Nuclear Science Laboratory of the University of Notre Dame, using the NSCL Summing NaI(Tl) detector and the $γ$-summing technique. The measurements are compared to predictions in the statistical Hauser-Feshbach model of nuclear reactions using the SMARAGD code. It is found that the energy dependence of the cross section is reproduced well but the absolute value is overestimated by the prediction. This can be remedied by rescaling the $α$ width by a factor of 0.45. Stellar reactivities were calculated with the rescaled $α$ width and their impact on nucleosynthesis in type Ia supernovae has been studied. It is found that the resulting abundances change by up to 5\% when using the new reactivities.

Measurement of the $^{90, 92}$Zr(p,$γ$)$^{91,93}$Nb reactions for the nucleosynthesis of elements around A=90

Cross section measurements of the reactions $^{90, 92}$Zr(p,$γ$)$^{91,93}$Nb were performed using the NSCL SuN detector at the University of Notre Dame. These reactions are part of the nuclear reaction flow for the synthesis of the light p nuclei. For the $^{90}$Zr(p,$γ$)$^{91}$Nb reaction the new measurement resolves the disagreement between previous results. For the $^{92}$Zr(p,$γ$)$^{93}$Nb reaction the present work reports the first measurement of this reaction cross section. Both reaction cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations and a very good agreement with the standard NON-SMOKER model is observed.

Systematic study of (p,γ) reactions on Ni isotopes

A systematic study of the radiative proton capture reaction for all stable nickel isotopes is presented. The results were obtained using 2.0 - 6.0 MeV protons from the 11 MV tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Notre Dame. The γ-rays were detected by the NSCL SuN detector utilising the γ-summing technique. The results are compared to a compilation of earlier measurements and discrepancies between the previous data are resolved. The experimental results are also compared to the theoretical predictions obtained using the NON-SMOKER and SMARAGD codes. Based on these comparisons an improved set of astrophysical reaction rates is proposed for the (p,γ) reactions on the stable nickel isotopes as well as for the 56Ni(p,γ)57Cu reaction.

Suppression of the centrifugal barrier effects in the off-energy-shell neutron+$^{17}$O interaction

The reaction $^{17}$O($n,α$)$^{14}$C was studied at energies from $E_{cm}=0$ to $E_{cm}=350$ keV using the quasi-free deuteron break-up in the three body reaction $^{17}$O$+d \rightarrow α+ ^{14}$C$+p$, extending the Trojan Horse indirect method (THM) to neutron-induced reactions. It is found that the $^{18}$O excited state at $E^*=8.125 \pm 0.002$ MeV observed in THM experiments is absent in the direct measurement because of its high centrifugal barrier. The angular distributions of the populated resonances have been measured for the first time. The results unambiguously indicate the ability of the THM to overcome the centrifugal barrier suppression effect and to pick out the contribution of the bare nuclear interaction.

Upper Limit on the molecular resonance strengths in the ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C fusion reaction

Carbon burning is a crucial process for a number of important astrophysical scenarios. The lowest measured energy is around E$_{\rm c.m.}$=2.1 MeV, only partially overlapping with the energy range of astrophysical interest. The currently adopted reaction rates are based on an extrapolation which is highly uncertain because of potential resonances existing in the unmeasured energy range and the complication of the effective nuclear potential. By comparing the cross sections of the three carbon isotope fusion reactions, ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C, ${}^{12}$C+${}^{13}$C and ${}^{13}$C+${}^{13}$C, we have established an upper limit on the molecular resonance strengths in ${}^{12}$C+${}^{12}$C fusion reaction. The preliminary results are presented and the impact on nuclear astrophysics is discussed.
