Semileptonic $B \to D^{**}$ decays in Lattice QCD : a feasibility study and first results

We compute the decays ${B\to D^\ast_0}$ and ${B\to D^\ast_2}$ with finite masses for the $b$ and $c$ quarks. We first discuss the spectral properties of both the $B$ meson as a function of its momentum and of the $D^\ast_0$ and $D^\ast_2$ at rest. We compute the theoretical formulae leading to the decay amplitudes from the three-point and two-point correlators. We then compute the amplitudes at zero recoil of ${B\to D^\ast_0}$ which turns out not to be vanishing contrary to what happens in the heavy quark limit. This opens a possibility to get a better agreement with experiment. To improve the continuum limit we have added a set of data with smaller lattice spacing. The ${B\to D^\ast_2}$ vanishes at zero recoil and we show a convincing signal but only slightly more than 1 sigma from 0. In order to reach quantitatively significant results, we plan to fully exploit smaller lattice spacings as well as another lattice regularization.

Decay constants of B-mesons from non-perturbative HQET with two light dynamical quarks

We present a computation of B-meson decay constants from lattice QCD simulations within the framework of Heavy Quark Effective Theory for the b-quark. The next-to-leading order corrections in the HQET expansion are included non-perturbatively. Based on Nf=2 gauge field ensembles, covering three lattice spacings a (0.08-0.05)fm and pion masses down to 190MeV, a variational method for extracting hadronic matrix elements is used to keep systematic errors under control. In addition we perform a careful autocorrelation analysis in the extrapolation to the continuum and to the physical pion mass limits. Our final results read fB=186(13)MeV, fBs=224(14)MeV and fBs/fB=1.203(65). A comparison with other results in the literature does not reveal a dependence on the number of dynamical quarks, and effects from truncating HQET appear to be negligible.

High statistics determination of the strong coupling constant in Taylor scheme and its OPE Wilson coefficient from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper reports on the determination of $α_S$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. A high-statistics sample of gauge configurations, used to evaluate the coupling from ghost and gluon propagators, allows for the appropriate update of previous results, now performing an improved analysis of data with reduced statistical errors and the systematical uncertainties under a better control.

The b-quark mass from non-perturbative $N_f=2$ Heavy Quark Effective Theory at $O(1/m_h)$

We report our final estimate of the b-quark mass from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD simulations using Heavy Quark Effective Theory non-perturbatively matched to QCD at $O(1/m_h)$. Treating systematic and statistical errors in a conservative manner, we obtain $\overline{m}_{\rm b}^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2 {\rm GeV})=4.88(15)$ GeV after an extrapolation to the physical point.

The strong running coupling at $τ$ and $Z_0$ mass scales from lattice QCD

This letter reports on the first computation, from data obtained in lattice QCD with $u,d,s$ and $c$ quarks in the sea, of the running strong coupling via the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We provide with estimates of $\ams(m_τ^2)$ and $\ams(m_Z^2)$ in very good agreement with experimental results. Including a dynamical c quark makes safer the needed running of $\ams$.

A novel method for the physical scale setting on the lattice and its application to $N_f$=4 simulations

This letter reports on a new procedure for the lattice spacing setting that takes advantage of the very precise determination of the strong coupling in Taylor scheme. Although it can be applied for the physical scale setting with the experimental value of $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}$ as an input, the procedure is particularly appropriate for relative "calibrations". The method is here applied for simulations with four degenerate light quarks in the sea and leads to prove that their physical scale is compatible with the same one for simulations with two light and two heavy flavours.

B decays to radially excited D

We discuss the possibility to measure in present experiments, especially LHCb, the non leptonic decay branching ratio $B \to D' π$, and emphasize phenomenological implications on $B \to D' l ν$ semileptonic decay. We have estimated by lattice QCD the $D'$ decay constant $f_{D'}$ that parameterizes the $D'$ emission contribution to the Class-III non leptonic decay $B^- \to D^0 π^-$. In addition, we provide a new estimate of the decay constants $f_{D_{s,q}}$ which read $f_{D_{s}}=252(3)$ MeV and $f_{D_{s}}/f_{D}=1.23(1)(1)$.

B-physics with $N_f=2$ Wilson fermions

We report the final results of the ALPHA collaboration for some B-physics observables: $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$ and $m_b$. We employ CLS configurations with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions in the sea and pion masses ranging down to 190 MeV. The b-quark is treated in HQET to order $1/m_b$. The renormalization, the matching and the improvement were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a=0.048$ fm are used in the continuum extrapolation.

Lattice measurement of α_s with a realistic charm quark

We report on an estimate of α_s, renormalised in the MSbar scheme at the tau and Z^0 mass scales, by means of lattice QCD. Our major improvement compared to previous lattice calculations is that, for the first time, no perturbative treatment at the charm threshold has been required since we have used statistical samples of gluon fields built by incorporating the vacuum polarisation effects of u/d, s and c sea quarks. Extracting α_s in the Taylor scheme from the lattice measurement of the ghost-ghost-gluon vertex, we obtain α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_Z)=0.1200(14) and α_s^{MSbar}(m^2_tau)=0.339(13).

Testing the OPE Wilson coefficient for $A^2$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

Gluon and ghost propagators data, obtained in Landau gauge from lattice simulations with two light and two heavy dynamical quark flavours ($N_f$=2+1+1), are described here with a running formula including a four-loop perturbative expression and a nonperturbative OPE correction dominated by the local operator $A^2$. The Wilson coefficients and their variation as a function of the coupling constant are extracted from the numerical data and compared with the theoretical expressions that, after being properly renormalized, are known at ${\cal O}(α^4)$. As also $Λ_{\msbar}$ is rather well known for $N_f$=2+1+1, this allows for a precise consistency test of the OPE approach in the joint description of different observables.

$|V_{ub}|$ determination in lattice QCD

The 2012 PDG reports a tension at the level of $3 σ$ between two exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$. They are obtained by combining the experimental branching ratios of $B \to τν$ and $B \to πl ν$ (respectively) with a theoretical computation of the hadronic matrix elements $\fB$ and the $B \to π$ form factor $f_+(q^2)$. To understand the tension, improved precision and a careful analysis of the systematics involved are necessary. We report the results of the ALPHA collaboration for $\fB$ from the lattice with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We employ HQET, including $1/m_b$ corrections, with pion masses ranging down to $\approx$ 190 MeV. Renormalization and matching were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a^{-1}\approx 4.1$ GeV are used in the continuum extrapolation. We also present progress towards a computation of $f_+(q^2)$, to directly compare two independent exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ with each other and with inclusive determinations. Additionally, we report on preliminary results for $\fBq{s}$, needed for the analysis of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$.}

B-physics from HQET in two-flavour lattice QCD

We present our analysis of B physics quantities using non-perturbatively matched Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) in Nf= 2 lattice QCD on the CLS ensembles. Using all-to-all propagators, HYP-smeared static quarks, and the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (GEVP) approach with a conservative plateau selection procedure, we are able to systematically control all sources of error. With significantly increased statistics compared to last year, our preliminary results are mb (mb) = 4.22(10)(4)z GeV for the MS b-quark mass, and fB = 193(9)stat (4)_χMeV and fBs = 219(12)stat MeV for the B-meson decay constants.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}$ from lattice QCD with a dynamical charm

This paper is a first report on the determination of $Λ_{\msbar}$ from lattice simulations with 2+1+1 twisted-mass dynamical flavours {\it via} the computation of the ghost-gluon coupling renormalized in the MOM Taylor scheme. We show this approach allows a very good control of the lattice artefacts and confirm the picture from previous works with quenched and ${\rm N}_f$=2 twisted-mass field configurations which prove the necessity to include non-perturbative power corrections in the description of the running. We provide with an estimate of $Λ_{\msbar}$ in very good agreement with experimental results. To our knowledge it is the first calculation with a dynamical charm quark which makes the running up to $α_s(M_Z)$ much safer.

Average up/down, strange and charm quark masses with Nf=2 twisted mass lattice QCD

We present a high precision lattice calculation of the average up/down, strange and charm quark masses performed with Nf=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions. The analysis includes data at four values of the lattice spacing and pion masses as low as ~270 MeV, allowing for accurate continuum limit and chiral extrapolation. The strange and charm masses are extracted by using several methods, based on different observables: the kaon and the eta_s meson for the strange quark and the D, D_s and eta_c mesons for the charm. The quark mass renormalization is carried out non-perturbatively using the RI-MOM method. The results for the quark masses in the MSbar scheme read: m_ud(2 GeV)= 3.6(2) MeV, m_s(2 GeV)=95(6) MeV and m_c(m_c)=1.28(4) GeV. We also obtain the ratios m_s/m_ud=27.3(9) and m_c/m_s=12.0(3).

Renormalisation constants of quark bilinears in lattice QCD with four dynamical Wilson quarks

We present preliminary results of the non-perturbative computation of the RI-MOM renormalisation constants in a mass-independent scheme for the action with Iwasaki glue and four dynamical Wilson quarks employed by ETMC. Our project requires dedicated gauge ensembles with four degenerate sea quark flavours at three lattice spacings and at several values of the standard and twisted quark mass parameters. The RI-MOM renormalisation constants are obtained from appropriate O(a) improved estimators extrapolated to the chiral limit.

RI/MOM renormalization constants (N_f=4) and the strong coupling constant (N_f=2+1+1) from twisted-mass QCD

We study RI/MOM renormalization constants of bilinear quark operators for $N_f=4$ and the strong coupling constant for $N_f=2+1+1$ using Wilson twisted-mass fermions. We use the "egalitarian" method to remove H(4) hypercubic artifacts non-perturbatively, which enables us to study physical quantities in a wide range of momenta. We then apply OPE in studying the running behavior of $Z_q$ and $α_s$, from which we are able to extract the Landau gauge dimension-two gluon condensate $<A^2>$ which is of phenomenological interest.

A proposal for B-physics on current lattices

A method to extract B-physics parameters (b-quark mass and fB, fBs decay constants) from currently available lattice data is presented and tested. The approach is based on the idea of constructing appropriate ratios of heavy-light meson masses and decay constants, respectively, possessing a precisely known static limit, and evaluating them at various pairs of heavy quark masses around the charm. Via a smooth interpolation in the heavy quark mass from the easily accessible charm region to the asymptotic point, B-physics parameters are computed with a few percent (statistical + systematic) error using recently produced Nf=2 maximally twisted Wilson fermions data.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f=2$

A non-perturbative calculation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant is performed using $N_f=2$ twisted-mass dynamical fermions. The extraction of $Λ_{\bar{MS}}$ in the chiral limit reveals the presence of a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by a dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ condensate. In this contest a novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing in lattice simulations is presented.

Ghost-gluon coupling, power corrections and $Λ_{\overline {\rm MS}}$ from twisted-mass lattice QCD at Nf=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the ghost-gluon running QCD coupling constant from $N_f=2$ twisted-mass lattice calculations. A novel method for calibrating the lattice spacing, independent of the string tension and hadron spectrum is presented with results in agreement with previous estimates. The value of $Λ_{\overline{MS}}$ is computed from the running of the QCD coupling only after extrapolating to zero dynamical quark mass and after removing a non-perturbative OPE contribution that is assumed to be dominated by the dimension-two $\VEV{A^2}$ gluon condensate. The effect due to the dynamical quark mass in the determination of $\Lams$ is discussed.

Pseudoscalar meson decay constants f_K, f_D and f_Ds, from Nf=2 twisted mass Lattice QCD

We present the results of a lattice QCD calculation of the pseudoscalar meson decay constants f_K, f_D and f_Ds, performed with N_f=2 dynamical fermions. The simulation is carried out with the tree-level improved Symanzik gauge action and with the twisted mass fermionic action at maximal twist. With respect to our previous study (0709.4574 [hep-lat]), here we have analysed data at three values of the lattice spacing (a=0.10 fm, 0.09 fm, 0.07 fm) and performed the continuum limit, and we have included at a=0.09 fm data with a lighter quark mass (m_pi = 260 MeV) and a larger volume (L = 2.7 fm), thus having at each lattice spacing L >= 2.4 fm and m_pi*L >= 3.6. Our result for the kaon decay constant is f_K=(157.5 +- 0.8|_{stat.} +- 3.3|_{syst.}) MeV and for the ratio f_K/f_pi=1.205 +- 0.006|_{stat.} +- 0.025|_{syst.}, in good agreement with the other N_f=2 and N_f=2+1 lattice calculations. For the D and D_s meson decay constants we obtain f_D=(205 +- 7|_{stat.} +- 7|_{syst.}) MeV, in good agreement with the CLEO-c experimental measurement and with other recent N_f=2 and N_f=2+1 lattice calculations, and f_{Ds}=(248 +- 3|_{stat.} +- 8|_{syst.}) MeV that, instead, is 2.3 sigma below the CLEO-c/BABAR experimental average, confirming the present tension between lattice calculations and experimental measurements.

We present the results of the recent high precision lattice calculation of the average up/down, strange and charm quark masses performed by ETMC with Nf=2 twisted mass Wilson fermions. We have also obtained the ratios m_s/m_ud=27.3(9) and m_c/m_s=12.0(3). Moreover, we provide the updated result for the bottom quark mass, m_b(m_b)=4.3(2) GeV, obtained using the method presented in 0909.3187 [hep-lat].

Renormalisation of quark propagators from twisted-mass lattice QCD at $N_f$=2

We present results concerning the non-perturbative evaluation of the renormalisation constant for the quark field, $Z_q$, from lattice simulations with twisted mass quarks and three values of the lattice spacing. We use the RI'-MOM scheme. $Z_q$ has very large lattice spacing artefacts; it is considered here as a test bed to elaborate accurate methods which will be used for other renormalisation constants. We recall and develop the non-perturbative correction methods and propose tools to test the quality of the correction. These tests are also applied to the perturbative correction method. We check that the lattice spacing artefacts scale indeed as $a^2p^2$. We then study the running of $Z_q$ with particular attention to the non-perturbative effects, presumably dominated by the dimension-two gluon condensate $\VEV{A^2}$ in Landau gauge. We show indeed that this effect is present, and not small. We check its scaling in physical units confirming that it is a continuum effect. It gives a $\sim 4%$ contribution at 2 GeV. Different variants are used in order to test the reliability of our result and estimate the systematic uncertainties. Finally combining all our results and using the known Wilson coefficient of $\VEV{A^2}$ we find $g^2(μ^2) \VEV{A^2}_{μ^2\; CM} = 2.01(11)(^{+0.61}_{- 0.73}) \;\mathrm {GeV}^2$ at $μ=10\, \mathrm{GeV}$, in fair agreement within uncertainties with the value indepently extracted from the strong coupling constant.

f_B and f_Bs with maximally twisted Wilson fermions

We present a lattice QCD calculation of the heavy-light decay constants f_B and f_Bs performed with Nf=2 maximally twisted Wilson fermions, at four values of the lattice spacing. The decay constants have been also computed in the static limit and the results are used to interpolate the observables between the charm and the infinite-mass sectors, thus obtaining the value of the decay constants at the physical b quark mass. Our preliminary results are f_B=191(14) MeV, f_Bs=243(14) MeV, f_Bs/f_B=1.27(5). They are in good agreement with those obtained with a novel approach, recently proposed by our Collaboration (ETMC), based on the use of suitable ratios having an exactly known static limit.

Pseudoscalar decay constants of kaon and D-mesons from Nf=2 twisted mass Lattice QCD

We present the results of a lattice QCD calculation of the pseudoscalar meson decay constants fpi, fK, fD and fDs, performed with Nf=2 dynamical fermions. The simulation is carried out with the tree-level improved Symanzik gauge action and with the twisted mass fermionic action at maximal twist. We have considered for the final analysis three values of the lattice spacing, a~0.10 fm, 0.09 fm and 0.07 fm, with pion masses down to mpi~270 MeV. Our results for the light meson decay constants are fK=158.1(2.4) MeV and fK/fpi=1.210(18). From the latter ratio, by using the experimental determination of Gamma(K-->mu nu_mu (gamma))/ Gamma(pi--> mu nu_mu (gamma)) and the average value of |Vud| from nuclear beta decays, we obtain |Vus|=0.2222(34), in good agreement with the determination from semileptonic Kl3 decays and the unitarity constraint. For the D and Ds meson decay constants we obtain fD=197(9) MeV, fDs=244(8) MeV and fDs/fD=1.24(3). Our result for fD is in good agreement with the CLEO experimental measurement. For fDs our determination is smaller than the PDG 2008 experimental average but in agreement with a recent improved measurement by CLEO at the 1.4 sigma level.

Light quark masses and pseudoscalar decay constants from Nf=2 Lattice QCD with twisted mass fermions

We present the results of a lattice QCD calculation of the average up-down and strange quark masses and of the light meson pseudoscalar decay constants with Nf=2 dynamical fermions. The simulation is carried out at a single value of the lattice spacing with the twisted mass fermionic action at maximal twist, which guarantees automatic O(a)-improvement of the physical quantities. Quark masses are renormalized by implementing the non-perturbative RI-MOM renormalization procedure. Our results for the light quark masses are m_ud^{msbar}(2 GeV)= 3.85 +- 0.12 +- 0.40 MeV, m_s^{msbar}(2 GeV) = 105 +- 3 +- 9 MeV and m_s/m_ud = 27.3 +- 0.3 +- 1.2. We also obtain fK = 161.7 +- 1.2 +- 3.1 MeV and the ratio fK/fpi=1.227 +- 0.009 +- 0.024. From this ratio, by using the experimental determination of Gamma(K-> mu nu (gamma))/Gamma(pi -> mu nu (gamma)) and the average value of |Vud| from nuclear beta decays, we obtain |Vus|=0.2192(5)(45), in agreement with the determination from Kl3 decays and the unitarity constraint.

Non-perturbatively renormalised light quark masses from a lattice simulation with N_f=2

We present results for the light quark masses obtained from a lattice QCD simulation with N_f=2 degenerate Wilson dynamical quark flavours. The sea quark masses of our lattice, of spacing a ~ 0.06 fm, are relatively heavy, i.e., they cover the range corresponding to 0.60 <~ M_P/M_V <~ 0.75. After implementing the non-perturbative RI-MOM method to renormalise quark masses, we obtain m_{ud}^{MS}(2 GeV)=4.3 +- 0.4^{+1.1}_{-0} MeV, and m_s^{MS}(2 GeV)=101 +- 8^{+25}_{-0} MeV, which are about 15% larger than they would be if renormalised perturbatively. In addition, we show that the above results are compatible with those obtained in a quenched simulation with a similar lattice.

preprint2005arXiv

Non-perturbatively Renormalized Light Quark Masses with Two Dynamical Fermions

We present the results of a partially quenched lattice QCD calculation of light quark masses with $N_f=2$ degenerate dynamical flavors. Numerical simulations are carried out using the plaquette gauge action and the Wilson quark action at $β= 5.8$ ($a^{-1} \simeq 3.2\gev$). The spatial extension of the $24^3 \times 48$ lattice is about 1.5 fm. Configurations have been generated at four values of the sea quark masses, for which the ratio of pseudoscalar over vector meson masses is in the range $M_P/M_V \simeq 0.60 ÷0.75$. An important feature of the present study is the use of non-perturbative renormalization, performed with the $\ri$ method. The effects of dynamical sea quarks in the determination of light quark masses have been investigated by performing a quenched calculation on a similar lattice. Our results for the average up-down and strange quark masses are $m_{ud}^{MS} (2\gev) = 4.3(4) (^{+1.1}_{-0.4})\mev$ and $m_s^{MS}(2\gev)=101(8)(^{+25}_{-9}) \mev$. These values are larger than those obtained by evaluating the quark mass renormalization constants with one-loop (boosted) perturbation theory. Our results for the light quark masses are compatible with those obtained in the quenched simulation. No significant sea quark effects are seen, at the values of sea quark masses used in the present study.

Pionic couplings (g^ and g~) in the static heavy quark limit

The couplings between the soft pion and the doublet of heavy-light mesons are basic parameters of the ChPT approach to the heavy-light systems. We compute the unquenched (Nf=2) values of two such couplings in the static heavy quark limit: (1) g^, coupling to the lowest doublet of heavy-light mesons, and (2) g~, coupling to the first orbital excitations. A brief description of the calculation together with a short discussion of the results is presented.

Lattice measurement of the Isgur-Wise functions tau_1/2 and tau_3/2

We propose a method to compute the Isgur-Wise form factors tau_1/2(1) and tau_3/2(1) for the decay of B mesons into orbitally excited (P wave) D** charmed mesons on the lattice in the static limit. We also present the result of an exploratory numerical simulation which shows that the signal/noise ratio allows for a more dedicated computation. We find tau_1/2(1)=0.38(5) and tau_3/2(1)= 0.53(8), with yet unknown systematic errors. These preliminary numbers agree fairly well with theoretical expectation.
