Prediction of a Heusler alloy with switchable metal-to-half-metal behavior

We propose a ferromagnetic Heusler alloy that can switch between a metal and a half-metal. Thiseffect can provide tunable spintronics properties. Using the density functional theory (DFT) withreliable implementations of the electron correlation effects, we find Mn2ScSi total energy curvesconsisting of distinct branches with a very small energy difference. The phase at low lattice crystalvolume is a low magnetic half-metallic state while the phase at high lattice crystal volume is a highmagnetic metallic state. We suggest that the transition between half-metallic and metallic statescan be triggered by a triaxial contraction/expansion of the crystal lattice or by an external magneticfield if we assume that the lattice is cubic and remains cubic under expansion/contraction. However, the phase at high volume can also undergo an austenite-martensite phase transition because of thepresence of Jahn-Teller active3delectrons on the Mn atoms.

Ab initio description of the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ electronic structure

Bi-based cuprate superconductors are important materials for both fundamental research and applications. As in other cuprates, the superconducting phase in the Bi compounds lies close to an antiferromagnetic phase. Our density functional theory calculations based on the strongly-constrained-and-appropriately-normed (SCAN) exchange correlation functional in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ reveal the persistence of magnetic moments on the copper ions for oxygen concentrations ranging from the pristine phase to the optimally hole-doped compound. We also find the existence of ferrimagnetic solutions in the heavily doped compounds, which are expected to suppress superconductivity.

Electronic structure beyond the generalized gradient approximation for Ni$_2$MnGa

The stability of the nonmodulated martensitic phase, the austenitic Fermi surface and the phonon dispersion relations for ferromagnetic Ni$_2$MnGa are studied using density functional theory. Exchange-correlation effects are considered with various degrees of precision, starting from the simplest local spin density approximation (LSDA), then adding corrections within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and finally, including the meta-GGA corrections within the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN). We discuss a simple procedure to reduce a possible overestimation of magnetization and underestimation of nesting vector in SCAN by parametrically decreasing self-interaction corrections.

Examining the surface phase diagram of IrTe$_2$ with photoemission

In the transition metal dichalcogenide IrTe$_2$, low-temperature charge-ordered phase transitions involving Ir dimers lead to the occurrence of stripe phases of different periodicities, and nearly degenerate energies. Bulk-sensitive measurements have shown that, upon cooling, IrTe$_2$ undergoes two such first-order transitions to $(5\times1\times5)$ and $(8\times1\times8)$ reconstructed phases at $T_{c_1}\sim 280$~K and $T_{c_2}\sim 180$~K, respectively. Here, using surface sensitive probes of the electronic structure of IrTe$_2$, we reveal the first-order phase transition at $T_{c_3}=165$~K to the $(6\times1)$ stripes phase, previously proposed to be the surface ground state. This is achieved by combining x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, which give access to the evolution of stripe domains and a particular surface state, the energy of which is dependent on the Ir dimer length. By performing measurements over a full thermal cycle, we also report the complete hysteresis of all these phases.

3D Dirac cone carrier dynamics in Na3Bi and Cd3As2

Optical measurements and band structure calculations are reported on 3D Dirac materials. The electronic properties associated with the Dirac cone are identified in the reflectivity spectra of Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Na$_3$Bi single crystals. In Na$_3$Bi, the plasma edge is found to be strongly temperature dependent due to thermally excited free carriers in the Dirac cone. The thermal behavior provides an estimate of the Fermi level $E_F=25$ meV and the z-axis Fermi velocity $v_z = 0.3 \text{ eV} Å$ associated with the heavy bismuth Dirac band. At high energies above the $Γ$-point Lifshitz gap energy, a frequency and temperature independent $ε_2$ indicative of Dirac cone interband transitions translates into an ab-plane Fermi velocity of $3 \text{ eV} Å$. The observed number of IR phonons rules out the $\text{P}6_3\text{/mmc}$ space group symmetry but is consistent with the $\text{P}\bar{3}\text{c}1$ candidate symmetry. A plasmaron excitation is discovered near the plasmon energy that persists over a broad range of temperature. The optical signature of the large joint density of states arising from saddle points at $Γ$ is strongly suppressed in Na$_3$Bi consistent with band structure calculations that show the dipole transition matrix elements to be weak due to the very small s-orbital character of the Dirac bands. In Cd$_3$As$_2$, a distinctive peak in reflectivity due to the logarithmic divergence in $ε_1$ expected at the onset of Dirac cone interband transitions is identified. The center frequency of the peak shifts with temperature quantitatively consistent with a linear dispersion and a carrier density of $n=1.3\times10^{17}\text{ cm}^{-3}$. The peak width gives a measure of the Fermi velocity anisotropy of $10\%$, indicating a nearly spherical Fermi surface. The lineshape gives an upper bound estimate of 7 meV for the potential fluctuation energy scale.

Identifying a descriptor for d-orbital delocalization in cathodes of Li batteries based on x-ray Compton scattering

We discuss how x-ray Compton scattering spectra can be used for investigating the evolution of electronic states in cathode materials of Li batteries under the lithiation/delithiation process. In particular, our analysis of the Compton spectra taken from polycrystalline LixCoO2 samples shows that the spectra are dominated by the contribution of the O-2p redox orbital. We identify a distinct signature of d-orbital delocalization, which is tied directly to the conductivity of the material, providing a descriptor based on Compton spectra for monitoring the lithiation range with improved conductivity and kinetics for electrochemical operation. Our study demonstrates that Compton scattering spectroscopy can provide a window for probing complex electronic mechanisms underlying the charging and discharging processes in Li-battery materials.

Non-destructive measurement of in-operando lithium concentration in batteries via x-ray Compton scattering

Non-destructive determination of lithium distribution in a working battery is key for addressing both efficiency and safety issues. Although various techniques have been developed to map the lithium distribution in electrodes, these methods are mostly applicable to test cells. Here we propose the use of high-energy x-ray Compton scattering spectroscopy to measure the local lithium concentration in closed electrochemical cells. A combination of experimental measurements and parallel first-principles computations is used to show that the shape parameter S of the Compton profile is linearly proportional to lithium concentration and thus provides a viable descriptor for this important quantity. The merits and applicability of our method are demonstrated with illustrative examples of LixMn2O4 cathodes and a working commercial lithium coin battery CR2032.

Self-consistent scheme for optical response of large hybrid networks of semiconductor quantum dots and plasmonic metal nanoparticles

We discuss a self-consistent scheme for treating the optical response of large, hybrid networks of semiconducting quantum dots (SQDs) and plasmonic metallic nanoparticles (MNPs). Our method is efficient and scalable and becomes exact in the limiting case of weakly interacting SQDs. The self-consistent equations obtained for the steady state are analogous to the von Neumann equations of motion for the density matrix of a SQD placed in an effective electric field computed within the discrete dipole approximation. Illustrative applications of the theory to square and honeycomb SQD, MNP, and hybrid SDQ-MNP lattices as well as SQD-MNP dimers are presented. Our results demonstrate that hybrid SQD-MNP lattices can provide flexible platforms for light manipulation with tunable resonant characteristics.

Explaining the x-ray nonlinear susceptibility of diamond and silicon near absorption edges

We report the observation and the theoretical explanation of the parametric down-conversion nonlinear susceptibility at the $K$-absorption edge of diamond and at the $L_{23}$-absorption edge of a silicon crystal. Using arguments similar to those invoked to successfully predict resonant inelastic x-ray spectra, we derive an expression for the renormalization term of the non-linear susceptibility at the x-ray edges, which can be evaluated by using first-principles calculations of the atomic scattering factor $f_1$. Our model is shown to reproduce the observed enhancement of the parametric down-conversion at the diamond $K$ and the Si $L_{23}$ edges rather than the suppression previously claimed.

Extracting the Redox Orbitals in Li Battery Materials with High-Resolution X-Ray Compton Scattering Spectroscopy

We present an incisive spectroscopic technique for directly probing redox orbitals based on bulk electron momentum density measurements via high-resolution x-ray Compton scattering. Application of our method to spinel LixMn2O4, a lithium ion battery cathode material, is discussed. The orbital involved in the lithium insertion and extraction process is shown to mainly be the oxygen 2p orbital. Moreover, the manganese 3d states are shown to experience spatial delocalization involving 0.16 electrons per Mn site during the battery operation. Our analysis provides a clear understanding of the fundamental redox process involved in the working of a lithium ion battery.

Visualizing the mixed bonding properties of liquid boron with high resolution Compton scattering

Bonding characteristics of liquid boron at 2500K are studied by using high resolution Compton scattering. An excellent agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding Car-Parinello molecular dynamics simulations. Covalent bond pairs are clearly shown to dominate in liquid boron along with the coexistence of diffuse pairs. Our study reveals the complex bonding pattern of liquid boron, and gives insight into the unusual properties of this high temperature liquid.

A Minimal tight-binding model for ferromagnetic canted bilayer manganites

Half-metallicity in materials has been a subject of extensive research due to its potential for applications in spintronics. Ferromagnetic manganites have been seen as a good candidate, and aside from a small minority-spin pocket observed in La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ $(x=0.38)$, transport measurements show that ferromagnetic manganites essentially behave like half metals. Here we develop robust tight-binding models to describe the electronic band structure of the majority as well as minority spin states of ferromagnetic, spin-canted antiferromagnetic, and fully antiferromagnetic bilayer manganites. Both the bilayer coupling between the MnO$_2$ planes and the mixing of the $|x^2 - y^2>$ and $|3z^2 - r^2>$ Mn 3d orbitals play an important role in the subtle behavior of the bilayer splitting. Effects of $k_z$ dispersion are included.

Electronic structure and excitations in oxygen deficient CeO$_{2-δ}$ from DFT calculations

The electronic structures of supercells of CeO$_{2-δ}$ have been calculated within the Density Functional Theory (DFT). The equilibrium properties such as lattice constants, bulk moduli and magnetic moments are well reproduced by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Electronic excitations are simulated by robust total energy calculations for constrained states with atomic core- or valence-holes. Pristine ceria CeO$_2$ is found to be a non-magnetic insulator with magnetism setting in as soon as oxygens are removed from the structure. In the ground state of defective ceria, the Ce-$f$ majority band resides near the Fermi level, but appears at about 2 eV below the Fermi level in photoemission spectroscopy experiments due to final state effects. We also tested our computational method by calculating threshold energies in Ce-M$_5$ and O-K x-ray absorption spectroscopy and comparing theoretical predictions with the corresponding measurements. Our result that $f$ electrons reside near the Fermi level in the ground state of oxygen deficient ceria is crucial for understanding catalytic properties of CeO$_2$ and related materials.

Gradient correction scheme for bulk and defect positron states in materials: New developments

As local density approximation positron calculations systematically underestimate positron lifetimes when they are compared with their experimental counterparts, the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) for positrons was introduced in the 1990s, in analogy with the GGA for electrons. New developments in the GGA for positrons are summarized and presented here and it is also discussed how they affect and possibly improve calculated positron lifetimes. In particular, these new GGA approaches are based on the recent perturbed hypernetted-chain and quantum Monte Carlo results.

Inelastic X-ray scattering from valence electrons near absorption edges of FeTe and TiSe$_2$

We study resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) peaks corresponding to low energy particle-hole excited states of metallic FeTe and semi-metallic TiSe$_2$ for photon incident energy tuned near the $L_{3}$ absorption edge of Fe and Ti respectively. We show that the cross section amplitudes are well described within a renormalization group theory where the effect of the core electrons is captured by effective dielectric functions expressed in terms of the the atomic scattering parameters $f_1$ of Fe and Ti. This method can be used to extract the dynamical structure factor from experimental RIXS spectra in metallic systems.

Natural orbital functional theory and pairing correlation effects in electron momentum density

Occupation numbers of natural orbitals capture the physics of strong electron correlations in momentum space. A Natural Orbital Density Functional Theory based on the antisymmetrized geminal product provides these occupation numbers and the corresponding electron momentum density. A practical implementation of this theory approximates the natural orbitals by the Kohn-Sham orbitals and uses a mean-field approach to estimate pairing amplitudes leading to corrections for the independent particle model. The method is applied to weakly doped $\mbox{La$_2$CuO$_4$}$.

Effects of excess or deficiency of oxygen content on the electronic structure of high-$T_C$ cuprates

Band structure calculations are presented for large supercells of Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ (BCO) with O-vacancies in planar or apic al positions, and of superoxygenated La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) with oxygen interstitials in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers. It is foun d that apical oxygen vacancies in BCO act as electron dopants and makes the electronic structure similar to that of hole doped LCO. Excess oxygen interstitials forming wires in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers of LCO are shown to yield a much larger density-of-states at the Fermi energy than for the stoichiometric compound related with a segmentation of the Fermi surface. Anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations are strengthened by O-vacancies in BCO as well as by oxygen interstitials in LCO, but are strongly suppressed in O-deficient LCO. Our results indicate the complexity of doping by O-vacancies, and by ordered defects that are a significant factor contr olling the electronic properties of cuprates.

Minority-spin $t_{2g}$ states and the degree of spin polarization in ferromagnetic metallic La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ ($x=0.38$)

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we investigate the electronic band structure and Fermi surface of ferromagnetic La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ ($x=0.38$). Besides the expected two hole pockets and one electron pocket of majority-spin $e_g$ electrons, we show an extra electron pocket around the $Γ$ point. A comparison with first-principles spin-polarized band-structure calculations shows that the extra electron pocket arises from $t_{2g}$ electrons of minority-spin character, indicating this compound is not a complete half-metallic ferromagnet, with similar expectations for lightly-doped cubic manganites. However, our data suggest that a complete half-metallic state is likely to be reached as long as the bandwidth is mildly reduced. Moreover, the band-resolved capability of ARPES enables us to investigate the band structure effects on spin polarization for different experimental conditions.

Positronium in MOFs: the Atom out of the box

Recently, evidence for positronium (Ps) in a Bloch state in self-assembled metal--organic frameworks (MOFs) has been reported [Dutta et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 197403 (2013)]. In this paper, we study Ps emission into vacuum from four different MOFs crystals: MOF-5, IRMOF-8, FMA and IRMOF-20. Our measurements of Ps yield and emission energy into vacuum provide definitive evidence of Ps delocalization. We determine with a different technique Ps diffusion lengths in agreement with the recently published results. Furthermore, we measure that a fraction of the Ps is emitted into vacuum with a distinctly smaller energy than what one would expect for Ps localized in the MOFs' cells. We show that a calculation assuming Ps delocalized in a Kronig--Penney potential reproduces the measured Ps emission energy.

Surfaces of colloidal PbSe nanocrystals probed by thin-film positron annihilation spectroscopy

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and positron-electron momentum density (PEMD) studies on multilayers of PbSe nanocrystals (NCs), supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), show that positrons are strongly trapped at NC surfaces, where they provide insight into the surface composition and electronic structure of PbSe NCs. Our analysis indicates abundant annihilation of positrons with Se electrons at the NC surfaces and with O electrons of the oleic ligands bound to Pb ad-atoms at the NC surfaces, which demonstrates that positrons can be used as a sensitive probe to investigate the surface physics and chemistry of nanocrystals inside multilayers. Ab-initio electronic structure calculations provide detailed insight in the valence and semi-core electron contributions to the positron-electron momentum density of PbSe. Both lifetime and PEMD are found to correlate with changes in the particle morphology characteristic of partial ligand removal.

Bulk Fermi surface and momentum density in heavily doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using high resolution Compton scattering and positron annihilation spectroscopies

We have observed the bulk Fermi surface (FS) in an overdoped ($x$=0.3) single crystal of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ by using Compton scattering. A two-dimensional (2D) momentum density reconstruction from measured Compton profiles yields a clear FS signature in the third Brillouin zone along [100]. The quantitative agreement between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and momentum density experiment suggests that Fermi-liquid physics is restored in the overdoped regime. In particular the predicted FS topology is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental data. We find similar quantitative agreement between the measured 2D angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra and the DFT based computations. However, 2D-ACAR does not give such a clear signature of the FS in the extended momentum space in either the theory or the experiment.

Different doping from apical and planar oxygen vacancies in Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$

First principles band-structure calculations for large supercells of Ba$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ and La$_{2}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with different distributions and concentrations of oxygen vacancies show that the effective doping on copper sites strongly depends on where the vacancy is located. A vacancy within the Cu layer produces a weak doping effect while a vacancy located at an apical oxygen site acts as a stronger electron dopant on the copper layers and gradually brings the electronic structure close to that of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$. These effects are robust and only depend marginally on lattice distortions. Our results show that deoxygenation can reduce the effect of traditional La/Sr or La/Nd substitutions. Our study clearly identifies location of the dopant in the crystal structure as an important factor in doping of the cuprate planes.

Exactly soluble model of resonant energy transfer between molecules

Förster's theory of resonant energy transfer (FRET) predicts the strength and range of exciton transport between separated molecules. We introduce an exactly soluble model for FRET which reproduces Förster's results as well as incorporating quantum coherence effects. As an application the model is used to analyze a system composed of quantum dots and the protein bacteriorhodopsin.

Lindhard and RPA susceptibility computations in extended momentum space in electron doped cuprates

We present an approximation for efficient calculation of the Lindhard susceptibility $χ^{L}(q,ω)$ in a periodic system through the use of simple products of real space functions and the fast Fourier transform (FFT). The method is illustrated by providing $χ^{L}(q,ω)$ results for the electron doped cuprate Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ extended over several Brillouin zones. These results are relevant for interpreting inelastic X-ray scattering spectra from cuprates.

Persistence of Covalent Bonding in Liquid Silicon Probed by Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Metallic liquid silicon at 1787K is investigated using x-ray Compton scattering. An excellent agreement is found between the measurements and the corresponding Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations. Our results show persistence of covalent bonding in liquid silicon and provide support for the occurrence of theoretically predicted liquid-liquid phase transition in supercooled liquid states. The population of covalent bond pairs in liquid silicon is estimated to be 17% via a maximally-localized Wannier function analysis. Compton scattering is shown to be a sensitive probe of bonding effects in the liquid state.

Pressure dependent electronic properties of MgO polymorphs: A first-principles study of Compton profiles and autocorrelation functions

The first-principles periodic linear combination of atomic orbitals method within the framework of density functional theory implemented in the CRYSTAL06 code has been applied to explore effect of pressure on the Compton profiles and autocorrelation functions of MgO. Calculations are performed for the B1, B2, B3, B4, B8_1 and h-MgO polymorphs of MgO to compute lattice constants and bulk moduli. The isothermal enthalpy calculations predict that B4 to B8_1, h-MgO to B8_1, B3 to B2, B4 to B2 and h-MgO to B2 transitions take place at 2, 9, 37, 42 and 64 GPa respectively. The high pressure transitions B8_1 to B2 and B1 to B2 are found to occur at 340 and 410 GPa respectively. The pressure dependent changes are observed largely in the valence electrons Compton profiles whereas core profiles are almost independent of the pressure in all MgO polymorphs. Increase in pressure results in broadening of the valence Compton profiles. The principal maxima in the second derivative of Compton profiles shifts towards high momentum side in all structures. Reorganization of momentum density in the B1 to B2 structural phase transition is seen in the first and second derivatives before and after the transition pressure. Features of the autocorrelation functions shift towards lower r side with increment in pressure.

Muonium emission into vacuum from mesoporous thin films at cryogenic temperatures

We report on Muonium (Mu) emission into vacuum following μ+ implantation in mesoporous thin SiO2 films. We obtain a yield of Mu into vacuum of (38\pm4)% at 250 K temperature and (20\pm4)% at 100 K for 5 keV μ+ implantation energy. From the implantation energy dependence of the Mu vacuum yield we determine the Mu diffusion constants in these films: D250KMu = (1.6 \pm 0.1) \times 10-4 cm2/s and D100KMu = (4.2\pm0.5)\times10-5 cm2/s. Describing the diffusion process as quantum mechanical tunneling from pore-to-pore, we reproduce the measured temperature dependence T^3/2 of the diffusion constant. We extract a potential barrier of (-0.3 \pm 0.1) eV which is consistent with our computed Mu work-function in SiO2 of [-0.3,-0.9] eV. The high Mu vacuum yield even at low temperatures represents an important step towards next generation Mu spectroscopy experiments.

Oxygen disorder in ice probed by X-ray Compton scattering

We use electron momentum density in ice as a tool to quantify order-disorder transitions by comparing Compton profiles differences of ice VI, VII, VIII and XII with respect to ice Ih. Quantitative agreement is found between theory and experiment for ice VIII, which is the most ordered phase. Robust signatures of the oxygen disorder are identified in the momentum density for the VIII-VII ice phase transition. The unique aspect of this work is the determination of the fraction n_e of electron directly involved in phase transitions as well as the use of position space signatures for quantifying oxygen site disorder.

Renormalization of f-levels away from the Fermi energy in electron excitation spectroscopies: Density functional results of Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$

Relaxation energies for photoemission, when an occupied electronic state is excited, and for inverse photoemission, when an empty state is filled, are calculated within the density functional theory with application to Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. The associated relaxation energies are obtained by computing differences in total energies between the ground state and an excited state in which one hole or electron is added into the system. The relaxation energies of f-electrons are found to be of the order of several eV's, indicating that f-bands will appear substantially away from the Fermi energy ($E_F$) in their spectroscopic images, even if these bands lie near $E_F$. Our analysis explains why it would be difficult to observe f electrons at the $E_F$ even in the absence of strong electronic correlations.

X-ray absorption near-edge spectra of overdoped La_2-xSr_xCuO_4 high-T_c superconductors

We present results for realistic modeling of the x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) of the overdoped high-T_c superconductor La_2-xSr_xCuO_4 in the hole doping range x = 0.20-0.30. Our computations are based on a real-space Green's function approach in which strong-correlation effects are taken into account in terms of a doping-dependent self-energy. The predicted O K-edge XANES is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental results in this overdoped regime. We find that the low energy spectra are dominated by the contribution of O-atoms in the cuprate planes, with little contribution from apical O-atoms.

Auger mediated quantum sticking of positrons to surfaces: Evidence for single step transition from a scattering state to a surface image potential bound state

We present the observation of an efficient mechanism for positron sticking to surfaces termed here Auger mediated quantum sticking. In this process the energy associated with the positrons transition from an unbound scattering state to a bound image potential state is coupled to a valence electron which can then have sufficient energy to leave the surface. Compelling evidence for this mechanism is found in a narrow secondary electron peak observed at incident positron kinetic energies well below the electron work function.

Proposal to determine the Fermi-surface topology of a doped iron-based superconductor using bulk-sensitive Fourier-transform Compton scattering

We have carried out first-principles calculations of the Compton scattering spectra to demonstrate that the filling of the hole Fermi surface in LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs produces a distinct signature in the Fourier transformed Compton spectrum when the momentum transfer vector lies along the [100] direction. We thus show how the critical concentration $x_c$, where hole Fermi surface pieces are filled up and the superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is expected to be suppressed, can be obtained in a bulk-sensitive manner.
