The validity of the Haldane's conjecture entails that the mass gap of the 2-dimensional O(3) non-linear sigma model with a θ-term must tend to zero as θ approaches the value π by following a precise law. In the present paper we extract the related critical exponents by simulating the model at imaginary θ.
The conditions under which entanglement becomes maximal are sought in the general one--dimensional quantum random walk with two walkers. Moreover, a one--dimensional shift operator for the two walkers is introduced and its performance in generating entanglement is analyzed as a function of several free parameters, some of them coming from the shift operator itself and some others from the coin operator. To simplify the investigation an averaged entanglement is defined.
Contrary to a widespread belief, measures of velocity can yield a value larger than c, the instantaneous light speed in vacuum, without contradicting Einstein's relativity. Nevertheless, the effect turns out to be too small to explain the recently claimed superluminal velocity by the OPERA collaboration. Several other general relativistic effects acting on the OPERA neutrinos are also analyzed. All of them are unable to explain the OPERA result.
We present a study of the systematic effects in the nonperturbative evaluation of the renormalization constants which appear in the field-theoretical determination of the topological susceptibility in pure Yang-Mills theory. The study is performed by computing the renormalization constants on configurations that have been calibrated by use of the Ginsparg-Wilson formalism and by cooling.
An algorithm to simulate full QCD with 3 colours at nonzero chemical potential on the lattice is proposed. The algorithm works for small values of the chemical potential and can be used to extract expectation values of CPT invariant operators.
We present complete three loop results and preliminary four loop results for the 2D O(n) nonlinear sigma model with 0-loop and 1-loop Symanzik improved actions. This calculation aims to test the improvement in the numerical precision that the combination of Symanzik actions and effective couplings can give in Monte Carlo simulations.
We investigate the topological susceptibility of the QCD vacuum with two flavours of dynamical staggered fermions on the lattice both at zero and finite temperature. At zero temperature we study the dependence of the signal on the fermion mass and at finite temperature we analyze the behaviour across the phase transition.
Various cooling methods, including a recently introduced one which smoothes out only quantum fluctuations larger than a given threshold, are applied to the study of topology in 2d CP(N-1) models. A critical comparison of their properties is performed.
We study the topological properties of full QCD with four flavours of dynamical staggered fermions. In particular the topological susceptibility is measured and the problem of the determination of its first derivative is discussed.
By using the results of a high-statistics (O(10^7) measurements) Monte Carlo simulation we test several predictions of perturbation theory on the O(n) non-linear sigma-model in 2 dimensions. We study the O(3) and O(8) models on large enough lattices to have a good control on finite-size effects. The magnetic susceptibility and three different definitions of the correlation length are measured. We check our results with large-n expansions as well as with standard formulae for asymptotic freedom up to 4 loops in the standard and effective schemes. For this purpose the weak coupling expansions of the energy up to 4 loops for the standard action and up to 3 loops for the Symanzik action are calculated. For the O(3) model we have used two different effective schemes and checked that they lead to compatible results. A great improvement in the results is obtained by using the effective scheme based on the energy at 3 and 4 loops. We find that the O(8) model follows very nicely (within few per mille) the perturbative predictions. For the O(3) model an acceptable agreement (within few per cent) is found.
