Anderson mobility gap probed by dynamic coherent backscattering

We use dynamic coherent backscattering to study one of the Anderson mobility gaps in the vibrational spectrum of strongly disordered three-dimensional mesoglasses. Comparison of experimental results with the self-consistent theory of localization allows us to estimate the localization (correlation) length as a function of frequency in a wide spectral range covering bands of diffuse transport and a mobility gap delimited by two mobility edges. The results are corroborated by transmission measurements on one of our samples.

Photon Hall Scattering from Alkaline-earth-like atoms and Alkali-like ions

We investigate the possibility of observing a magneto-transverse scattering of photons from alkaline-earth-like atoms as well as alkali-like ions and provide orders of magnitude. The transverse magneto-scattering is physically induced by the interference between two possible quantum transitions of an outer electron in a S-state, one dispersive electric-dipole transition to a P-orbital state and a second resonant electric-quadrupole transition to a P-orbital state. In contrast with previous mechanisms proposed for such an atomic photonic Hall effect, no real photons are scattered by the electric-dipole allowed transition, which increases the ratio of Hall current to background photons significantly. The main experimental challenge is to overcome the small detection threshold, with only 10^{-5} photons scattered per atom per second.

A single-oscillator quantum model for magnetochiral birefringence

We derive an analytical expression for the magnetochiral birefringence of a dilute diamagnetic chiral molecular medium subjet to a constant magnetic field. We use the single-oscillator model of Condon et al. [1, 2] to describe the optical properties of the individual molecules. The result is a function of the refractive index and the rotatory power. This result is compared to experimental data.

Observation of infinite-range intensity correlations above, at and below the 3D Anderson localization transition

We investigate long-range intensity correlations on both sides of the Anderson transition of classical waves in a three-dimensional (3D) disordered material. Our ultrasonic experiments are designed to unambiguously detect a recently predicted infinite-range C0 contribution, due to local density of states fluctuations near the source. We find that these C0 correlations, in addition to C2 and C3 contributions, are significantly enhanced near mobility edges. Separate measurements of the inverse participation ratio reveal a link between C0 and the anomalous dimension Δ_2, implying that C0 may also be used to explore the critical regime of the Anderson transition.

Transverse confinement of waves in 3D random media

We study the transmission of a tightly focused beam through a thick slab of 3D disordered medium in the Anderson localized regime. We show that the transverse profile of the transmitted beam exhibits clear signatures of Anderson localization and that its mean square width provides a direct measure of the localization length. For a short incident pulse, the width is independent of absorption.

Phase statistics of seismic coda waves

We report the analysis of the statistics of the phase fluctuations in the coda of earthquakes recorded during a temporary experiment deployed at Pinyon Flats Observatory, California. The practical measurement of the phase is discussed and the main pitfalls are underlined. For large values, the experimental distributions of the phase first, second and third derivatives obey universal power-law decays whose exponents are remarkably well predicted by circular Gaussian statistics. For small values, these distributions are flat. The details of the transition between the plateau and the power-law behavior are governed by the wavelength. The correlation function of the first phase derivative along the array shows a simple algebro-exponential decay with the mean free path as the only length scale. Although only loose bounds are provided in this study, our work suggests a new method to estimate the degree of heterogeneity of the cr

Giant fluctuations of topological charge in a disordered wave guide

We study the fluctuations of the total topological charge of a scalar wave propagating in a hollow conducting wave guide filled with scatterers inside. We investigate the dependence of the screening on the scattering mean free path and on the presence of boundaries. Near the cut-off frequencies of the wave guide, screening is strongly suppressed near the boundaries. The resulting huge fluctuations of the total topological charge are very sensitive to the disorder.

Photonic Hall Effect in ferrofluids: Theory and Experiments

An experimental and theoretical study on the Photonic Hall Effect (PHE) in liquid and gelled samples of ferrofluids is presented. The ferrofluids are aqueous colloidal suspensions of Fe(_{2})CoO(_{4}) particles, which can be considered as anisotropic and absorbing Rayleigh scatterers. The PHE is found to be produced by the orientation of the magnetic moments of the particles, as is also the case for the Faraday effect. The dependence of the PHE with respect to the concentration of the scatterers, the magnetic field and the polarization of the incident light is measured in liquid and in gelled samples and is compared to a simple model based on the use of a scattering matrix and the single scattering approximation.

Coherent Backscattering of light in a magnetic field

This paper describes how coherent backscattering is altered by an external magnetic field. In the theory presented, magneto-optical effects occur inside Mie scatterers embedded in a non-magnetic medium. Unlike previous theories based on point-like scatterers, the decrease of coherent backscattering is obtained in leading order of the magnetic field using rigorous Mie theory. This decrease is strongly enhanced in the proximity of resonances, which cause the path length of the wave inside a scatterer to be increased. Also presented is a novel analysis of the shape of the backscattering cone in a magnetic field.

Optics of a Faraday-active Mie Sphere

We present an exact calculation for the scattering of light from a single sphere made of a Faraday-active material, into first order of the external magnetic field. When the size of the sphere is small compared to the wavelength the known T-matrix for a magneto-active Rayleigh scatterer is found. We address the issue whether or not there is a so called \em Photonic Hall Effect - \em a magneto-transverse anisotropy in light scattering - for one Mie scatterer. In the limit of geometrical optics, we compare our results to the Faraday effect in a Fabry-Perot etalon.
