The Fall of Black Hole Firewall: Natural Nonmaximal Entanglement for Page Curve

The black hole firewall conjecture is based on Page curve hypothesis, which claims that entanglement between black hole and Hawking radiation is almost maximum. The hypothesis is inspired by Lubkin-Lloyd-Pagels-Page theorem for degenerate systems with zero Hamiltonian. Adopting canonical typicality for nondegenerate systems with nonvanishing Hamiltonians, the entanglement becomes nonmaximal, and energetic singularities (firewalls) do not emerge for general systems. For static thermal pure states of black hole and Hawking radiation, entanglement entropy equals thermal entropy of the smaller system.

A perturbative method for nonequilibrium steady state of open quantum systems

We develop a method of calculating the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) of an open quantum system that is weakly coupled to reservoirs in different equilibrium states. We describe the system using a Redfield-type quantum master equation (QME). We decompose the Redfield QME into a Lindblad-type QME and the remaining part $\mathcal{R}$. Regarding the steady state of the Lindblad QME as the unperturbed solution, we perform a perturbative calculation with respect to $\mathcal{R}$ to obtain the NESS of the Redfield QME. The NESS thus determined is exact up to the first order in the system-reservoir coupling strength (pump/loss rate), which is the same as the order of validity of the QME. An advantage of the proposed method in numerical computation is its applicability to systems larger than those in methods of directly solving the original Redfield QME. We apply the method to a noninteracting fermion system to obtain an analytical expression of the NESS density matrix. We also numerically demonstrate the method in a nonequilibrium quantum spin chain.

Geometrical Excess Entropy Production in Nonequilibrium Quantum Systems

For open systems described by the quantum Markovian master equation, we study a possible extension of the Clausius equality to quasistatic operations between nonequilibrium steady states (NESSs). We investigate the excess heat divided by temperature (i.e., excess entropy production) which is transferred into the system during the operations. We derive a geometrical expression for the excess entropy production, which is analogous to the Berry phase in unitary evolution. Our result implies that in general one cannot define a scalar potential whose difference coincides with the excess entropy production in a thermodynamic process, and that a vector potential plays a crucial role in the thermodynamics for NESSs. In the weakly nonequilibrium regime, we show that the geometrical expression reduces to the extended Clausius equality derived by Saito and Tasaki (J. Stat. Phys. {\bf 145}, 1275 (2011)). As an example, we investigate a spinless electron system in quantum dots. We find that one can define a scalar potential when the parameters of only one of the reservoirs are modified in a non-interacting system, but this is no longer the case for an interacting system.

Geometrical Pumping in Quantum Transport: Quantum Master Equation Approach

For an open quantum system, we investigate the pumped current induced by a slow modulation of control parameters on the basis of the quantum master equation and full counting statistics. We find that the average and the cumulant generating function of the pumped quantity are characterized by the geometrical Berry-phase-like quantities in the parameter space, which is associated with the generator of the master equation. From our formulation, we can discuss the geometrical pumping under the control of the chemical potentials and temperatures of reservoirs. We demonstrate the formulation by spinless electrons in coupled quantum dots. We show that the geometrical pumping is prohibited for the case of non-interacting electrons if we modulate only temperatures and chemical potentials of reservoirs, while the geometrical pumping occurs in the presence of an interaction between electrons.

Perturbative Analysis of Nonequilibrium Steady States in Quantum Systems

We study the nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) in a quantum system in contact with two heat baths at different temperatures. We use a time-independent perturbative expansion with respect to the coupling with the two heat baths to obtain the density matrix for the NESS. In particular, we show an explicit representation of the density matrix for the reflection symmetric and weakly nonequilibrium case. We also calculate the expectation value of the energy current and show that the Kubo formula holds in this case.

Effect of pitchfork bifurcations on the spectral statistics of Hamiltonian systems

We present a quantitative semiclassical treatment of the effects of bifurcations on the spectral rigidity and the spectral form factor of a Hamiltonian quantum system defined by two coupled quartic oscillators, which on the classical level exhibits mixed phase space dynamics. We show that the signature of a pitchfork bifurcation is two-fold: Beside the known effect of an enhanced periodic orbit contribution due to its peculiar $\hbar$-dependence at the bifurcation, we demonstrate that the orbit pair born {\em at} the bifurcation gives rise to distinct deviations from universality slightly {\em above} the bifurcation. This requires a semiclassical treatment beyond the so-called diagonal approximation. Our semiclassical predictions for both the coarse-grained density of states and the spectral rigidity, are in excellent agreement with corresponding quantum-mechanical results.

Role of an intermediate state in homogeneous nucleation

We explore the role of an intermediate state (phase) in homogeneous nucleation phenomenon by examining the decay process through a doubly-humped potential barrier. As a generic model we use the fourth- and sixth-order Landau potentials and analyze the Fokker-Planck equation for the one-dimensional thermal diffusion in the system characterized by a triple-well potential. In the low temperature case we apply the WKB method to the decay process and obtain the decay rate which is accurate for a wide range of depth and curvature of the middle well. In the case of a deep middle well, it reduces to a doubly-humped-barrier counterpart of the Kramers escape rate: the barrier height and the curvature of an initial well in the Kramers rate are replaced by the arithmetic mean of higher(or outer) and lower(or inner) partial barriers and the geometric mean of curvatures of the initial and intermediate wells, respectively. It seems to be a universal formula. In the case of a shallow-enough middle well, Kramers escape rate is alternatively evaluated within the standard framework of the mean-first-passage time problem, which certainly supports the WKB result. The criteria whether or not the existence of an intermediate state can enhance the decay rate are revealed.

Correlations of observables in chaotic states of macroscopic quantum systems

We study correlations of observables in energy eigenstates of chaotic systems of a large size $N$. We show that the bipartite entanglement of two subsystems is quite strong, whereas macroscopic entanglement of the total system is absent. It is also found that correlations, either quantum or classical, among less than $N/2$ points are quite small. These results imply that chaotic states are stable. Invariance of these properties under local operations is also shown.
