Acoustic phonon dispersion of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Acoustic phonons have recently been posited as playing an integral role in explaining the half-quantized thermal Hall effect in $α$-RuCl$_3$. Therefore, we present much needed inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of its acoustic phonon dispersion, along with calculations using the frozen-phonon method. We also discuss a temperature study which conclusively shows a first-order structural transition to a non-$C2/m$ space group at low temperature. Together these results are an important backbone for future theoretical and experimental studies of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Electron-phonon coupling and thermal transport in the thermoelectric compound $\mathrm{Mo_3Sb_{7-x}Te_x}$

Phonon properties of $\mathrm{Mo_3Sb_{7-x}Te_x}$ ($x=0,1.5, 1.7$), a potential high-temperature thermoelectric material, have been studied with inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering, and with first-principles simulations. The substitution of Te for Sb leads to pronounced changes in the electronic structure, local bonding, phonon density of states (DOS), dispersions, and phonon lifetimes. Alloying with tellurium shifts the Fermi level upward, near the top of the valence band, resulting in a strong suppression of electron-phonon screening, and a large overall stiffening of interatomic force-constants. The suppression in electron-phonon coupling concomitantly increases group velocities and suppresses phonon scattering rates, surpassing the effects of alloy-disorder scattering, and resulting in a surprising increased lattice thermal conductivity in the alloy. We also identify that the local bonding environment changes non-uniformly around different atoms, leading to variable perturbation strengths for different optical phonon branches. The respective roles of changes in phonon group velocities and phonon lifetimes on the lattice thermal conductivity are quantified. Our results highlight the importance of the electron-phonon coupling on phonon mean-free-paths in this compound, and also estimates the contributions from boundary scattering, umklapp scattering, and point-defect scattering.

Symmetry and correlations underlying Hidden Order in URu2Si2

We experimentally investigate the symmetry in the Hidden Order (HO) phase of intermetallic URu2Si2 by mapping the lattice and magnetic excitations via inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering measurements in the HO and high-temperature paramagnetic phases. At all temperatures the excitations respect the zone edges of the body-centered tetragonal paramagnetic phase, showing no signs of reduced spatial symmetry, even in the HO phase. The magnetic excitations originate from transitions between hybridized bands and track the Fermi surface, whose feature are corroborated by the phonon measurements. Due to a large hybridization energy scale, a full uranium moment persists in the HO phase, consistent with a lack of observed crystal-field-split states. Our results are inconsistent with local order parameter models and the behavior of typical density waves. We suggest that an order parameter that does not break spatial symmetry would naturally explain these characteristics.
