Reconciling ππ phase shift in Josephson junction experiments with even-parity superconductivity in Sr2_2RuO4_4

The superconducting state of Sr2_2RuO4_4 was once thought to be a leading candidate for pp-wave superconductivity. A constant Knight shift below the transition temperature provided evidence for spin-triplet pairing, and a ππ phase shift observed in Josephson junction tunneling experiments suggested odd-parity pairing, both of which are described by pp-wave states. However, with recent experiments observing a significant decrease in the Knight shift below the transition temperature, signifying a spin-singlet state, the odd-parity results are left to be reconciled. In this work, we show that an even-parity pseudospin-singlet state originating from interorbital pairing via spin-orbit coupling can explain what has been assumed to be evidence for an odd-parity state. In the presence of small mirror symmetry breaking, interorbital pairing is uniquely capable of displaying odd-parity characteristics required to explain these experimental results. Further, we discuss how these experiments may be used to differentiate the proposed pairing states of Sr2_2RuO4_4.

Evolution of Interorbital Superconductor to Intraorbital Spin-Density Wave in Layered Ruthenates

The ruthenate family of layered perovskites has been a topic of intense interest with much work dedicated to understanding the superconducting state of the single layer, Sr2_2RuO4_4. Another longstanding puzzle is the lack of superconductivity in its sister compound, Sr3_3Ru2_2O7_7, which constrains the possible superconducting mechanisms of Sr2_2RuO4_4. Here we address a microscopic mechanism that unifies superconducting and spin-density wave order in this family of materials. Beginning from a model of Sr2_2RuO4_4 featuring intraband pseudospin-singlet superconductivity originating from interorbital spin-triplet pairing via Hund's and spin-orbit couplings, the addition of bilayer coupling and staggered rotations of the oxygen octahedra are investigated. We find that the bilayer coupling alone enhances superconductivity, while staggered rotations destroy interorbital superconductivity, leaving a paramagnetic metal. The magnetic field then shifts van Hove singularities near the Fermi level, allowing intraorbital SDW order to form in the bilayer. Our theory predicts that bilayer Sr3_3Ru2_2O7_7 without staggered rotations exhibits interorbital superconductivity with a possibly higher transition temperature.

Shadowed triplet pairings in Hund's metals with spin-orbit coupling

Hund's coupling in multiorbital systems allows for the possibility of even-parity orbital-antisymmetric spin-triplet pairing, which can be stabilized by spin-orbit coupling (SOC). While this pairing expressed in the orbital basis is uniform and spin-triplet, it appears in the band basis as a pseudospin-singlet, with the momentum dependence determined by the SOC and the underlying triplet character remaining in the form of interband pairing active away from the Fermi energy. Here, we examine the role of momentum-dependent SOC in generating nontrivial pairing symmetries, as well as the hidden triplet nature associated with this interorbital pairing, which we dub a "shadowed triplet". Applying this concept to Sr2_{2}RuO4_{4}, we first derive several forms of SOC with dd-wave form factors from a microscopic model, and subsequently we show that for a range of SOC parameters, a pairing state with s+idxys+id_{xy} symmetry can be stabilized. Such a pairing state is distinct from pure spin-singlet and -triplet pairings due to its unique character of pseudospin-energy locking. We discuss experimental probes to differentiate the shadowed triplet pairing from conventional pseudospin-triplet and -singlet pairings.

Distinct reduction of Knight shift in superconducting state of Sr2_2RuO4_4 under uniaxial strain

Shortly after the discovery of superconductivity in Sr2_2RuO4_4, spin-triplet pairing was proposed and further corroborated by a constant Knight shift (KK) across the transition temperature (Tc_c). However, a recent experiment observed a drop in KK at Tc_c which becomes larger under uniaxial strain, ruling out several spin-triplet scenarios. Here we show that inter-orbital spin-triplet pairing features a d-vector that rotates when uniaxial strain is applied, leading to a larger drop in the spin polarization perpendicular to the strain direction, distinct from spin-singlet pairing. We propose that anisotropic spin polarization under strain will ultimately differentiate triplet vs.~singlet pairing.
