Analytic RFR Option Pricing with Smile and Skew

We extend the short rate model of Turfus and Romero-Bermúdez [2021] to facilitate accurate arbitrage-free analytic pricing of SOFR, SONIA or ESTR caplets, i.e. options on backward-looking compounded rates payments, in a manner consistent with the smile and skew levels observed in the market. These caplet pricing formulae and corresponding LIBOR or term-rate caplet results are translated into effective variance (implied volatility) formulae, which are seen to be of a particularly simple form. They show that the model is essentially equivalent to imposing on a Hull-White model an effective variance which is a quadratic function of the moneyness parameter (rather than a constant) for any given maturity. Results are also illustrated graphically.

Charge density response and fake plasmons in holographic models with strong translation symmetry breaking

We study the charge density response in holographic models with explicit translation symmetry breaking which is relevant in IR. In particular, we focus on Q-lattices and the Bianchy VII helix. We show that the hydrodynamic sound mode is removed from the spectrum due to the strong momentum relaxation and therefore, the usual treatment of the plasmon as Coulomb-dressed zero sound does not apply. Furthermore, the dominant coherent modes in the longitudinal channel, which control the neutral density-density correlator, are diffusive. We show these modes are strongly suppressed when the boundary Coulomb interaction is turned on. This renders the low frequency charge density response spectrum completely incoherent and featureless. At intermediate frequencies, we observe a broad feature -- the fake plasmon -- in the dressed correlator, which could be confused with an overdamped plasmon. However, its gap is set by the scale of translation symmetry breaking instead of the plasma frequency. This broad feature originates from the non-hydrodynamic sector of the holographic spectrum, and therefore, its behaviour, typical of strongly correlated quantum critical systems with holographic duals, deviates from the standard Fermi-liquid paradigm.

Isolated zeros destroy Fermi surface in holographic models with a lattice

We study the fermionic spectral density in a strongly correlated quantum system described by a gravity dual. In the presence of periodically modulated chemical potential, which models the effect of the ionic lattice, we explore the shapes of the corresponding Fermi surfaces, defined by the location of peaks in the spectral density at the Fermi level. We find that at strong lattice potentials sectors of the Fermi surface are unexpectedly destroyed and the Fermi surface becomes an arc-like disconnected manifold. We explain this phenomenon in terms of a collision of the Fermi surface pole with zeros of the fermionic Green's function, which are explicitly computable in the holographic dual.

Conductivity and entanglement entropy of high dimensional holographic superconductors

We investigate the dependence of the conductivity and the entanglement entropy on the space-time dimensionality $d$ in two holographic superconductors: one dual to a quantum critical point with spontaneous symmetry breaking, and the other modeled by a charged scalar that condenses at a sufficiently low temperature in the presence of a Maxwell field. In both cases the gravity background is asymptotically Anti de Sitter (AdS). In the large $d$ limit we obtain explicit analytical results for the conductivity at zero temperature and the entanglement entropy by a $1/d$ expansion. We show that the entanglement entropy is always smaller in the broken phase. As dimensionality increases, the entanglement entropy decreases, the coherence peak in the conductivity becomes narrower and the ratio between the energy gap and the critical temperature decreases. These results suggest that the condensate interactions become weaker in high spatial dimensions.

Shape resonances and shell effects in thin-film multiband superconductors

We study analytically the evolution of superconductivity in clean quasi-two-dimensional multiband supercon- ductors as the film thickness enters the nanoscale region by mean-field and semiclassical techniques. Tunneling into the substrate and finite lateral size effects, which are important in experiments, are also considered in our model. As a result, it is possible to investigate the interplay between quantum coherence effects, such as shape resonances and shell effects, with the potential to enhance superconductivity, and the multiband structure and the coupling to the substrate that tend to suppress it. The case of magnesium diboride, which is the conventional superconductor with the highest critical temperature, is discussed in detail. Once the effect of the substrate is considered, we still observe quantum size effects such as the oscillation of the critical temperature with the thickness but without a significant enhancement of superconductivity. In thin films with a sufficiently longer superconducting coherence length, it is, however, possible to increase the critical temperature above the bulk limit by tuning the film thickness or lateral size.

Size effects in superconducting thin films coupled to a substrate

Recent experimental advances in surface science have made it possible to track the evolution of superconductivity in films as the thickness enters the nanoscale region where it is expected that the substrate plays an important role. Here, we put forward a mean-field, analytically tractable, model that describes size effects in ultrathin films coupled to the substrate. We restrict our study to one-band, crystalline, weakly coupled superconductors with no impurities. The thin-film substrate/vacuum interfaces are described by a simple asymmetric potential well and a finite quasiparticle lifetime. Boundary conditions are chosen to comply with the charge neutrality condition. This model provides a fair description of experimental results in ultrathin lead films: on average, the superconducting gap decreases with thickness and it is always below the bulk value. Clear oscillations, remnants of the shape resonances, are still observed for intermediate thicknesses. For materials with a weaker electron-phonon coupling and negligible disorder, a modest enhancement of superconductivity seems to be feasible. The relaxation of the charge neutrality condition, which is in principle justified in complex oxide heterostructures and other materials, would lead to a much stronger enhancement of superconductivity by size effects.

Drude weight and Mazur-Suzuki bounds in holography

We investigate the Drude weight and the related Mazur-Suzuki (MS) bound in a broad variety of strongly coupled field theories with a gravity dual at finite temperature and chemical potential. We revisit the derivation of the recently proposed universal expression for the Drude weight for Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton (EMd) theories and extend it to the case of theories with multiple massless gauge fields. We show that the MS bound, which in the context of condensed matter provides information on the integrability of the theory, is saturated in these holographic theories including R-charged backgrounds. We then explore the limits of this universality by studying EMd theories with $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking and gravity duals of non-relativistic field theories including an asymptotically Lifshitz EMd model with two massless gauge fields and the Einstein-Proca model. In all these cases, the Drude weight, computed analytically, deviates from the universal result and the MS bound is not saturated. In general it is not possible to deduce the low temperature dependence of the Drude weight by simple dimensional analysis. Finally we study the effect of a weak breaking of translational symmetry by coupling the EMd action, with and without $U(1)$ spontaneous symmetry breaking, to an axion field. We show the coherent part of the conductivity in this limit is simply the product of the MS bound and the scattering time obtained from the leading quasinormal mode. For asymptotically $AdS$ theories it seems that the MS bound sets a lower bound on the DC conductivity for a given scattering time.
