A simple approach for biometrics: Finger-knuckle prints recognition based on a Sobel filter and similarity measures

The objective of this work is to propose a novel methodology for the finger knuckle print recognition, which is essentially a digital photo of the finger-knuckle region. We have employed very simple concepts of visual computing such as a filter based on the Sobel operator for finding edges and a simple noise reduction algorithm. These operations are exceptionally fast and produce binary images, which are very efficient to process and to store. Furthermore, alongside this preprocessing, some similarity measures were also regarded and evaluated for the task. After preprocessing an input finger it is compared to all the images of fingers in the dataset, one by one. We have obtained up to 17.02% of successful recognitions (true positive rate) with a large dataset.

On the Automated Segmentation of Epicardial and Mediastinal Cardiac Adipose Tissues Using Classification Algorithms

The quantification of fat depots on the surroundings of the heart is an accurate procedure for evaluating health risk factors correlated with several diseases. However, this type of evaluation is not widely employed in clinical practice due to the required human workload. This work proposes a novel technique for the automatic segmentation of cardiac fat pads. The technique is based on applying classification algorithms to the segmentation of cardiac CT images. Furthermore, we extensively evaluate the performance of several algorithms on this task and discuss which provided better predictive models. Experimental results have shown that the mean accuracy for the classification of epicardial and mediastinal fats has been 98.4% with a mean true positive rate of 96.2%. On average, the Dice similarity index, regarding the segmented patients and the ground truth, was equal to 96.8%. Therfore, our technique has achieved the most accurate results for the automatic segmentation of cardiac fats, to date.

Rational Convolution Roots of Isobaric Polynomials

In this paper, we exhibit two matrix representations of the rational roots of generalized Fibonacci polynomials (GFPs) under convolution product, in terms of determinants and permanents, respectively. The underlying root formulas for GFPs and for weighted isobaric polynomials (WIPs), which appeared in an earlier paper by MacHenry and Tudose, make use of two types of operators. These operators are derived from the generating functions for Stirling numbers of the first kind and second kind. Hence we call them Stirling operators. To construct matrix representations of the roots of GFPs, we use the Stirling operators of the first kind. We give explicit examples to show how the Stirling operators of the second kind appear in the low degree cases for the WIP-roots. As a consequence of the matrix construction, we have matrix representations of multiplicative arithmetic functions under the Dirichlet product into its divisible closure.
