Biomechanics of Tori body motion during competition Sutemi, Makikomi, Tai Atari

Background Objectives:The biomechanics of Tori s body motion during Sutemi, sacrifice techniques,Makikomi wrapping techniques, and Tai Atari,Body Strike techniques in judo is crucial for understanding these techniques' effectiveness and safety. This study examined the biomechanics by analysing the entire body of the tori during execution. Methods:We analysed Tori s body motion using original biomechanical models, considering the balance of sacrificing to throw Uke and body mass to strike the opponent. General equations for Sutemi, Makikomi, and Tai atari were established, and their utilisation in high level male competition was statistically analysed. Results:The results show that effective Sutemi and Makikomi execution depends on the correct use of Tori's body mass. The biomechanical model revealed the relationships between angular falling speed, body angle, and athlete height. The model allowed us to evaluate the falling velocity, showing that the angular velocity and acceleration were proportional to the gravitational acceleration and body-Tatami angle and inversely proportional to the athlete height. The stopping and sliding forces are directly proportional to the sum of the Tori and Uke masses and the body Tatami angle but are independent of the athletes eight. Tai Atari s force was quantified to evaluate its situational applicability in competition. Conclusion:This study advanced the biomechanical understanding of Sutemi, Makikomi, and Tai Atari using two original theoretical models, highlighting the importance of Tori s body mass motion. The findings obtained can influence training and competition strategies, enhance technique effectiveness, and reduce injury risks.

Suwari Seoi Safety: from children Dojo to High Level Competition (Biomechanical Part)

In this paper we face the problem of safety connected to a class of throws that are more often applied in every level of competitions. However, to our knowledge it has never been a scientific study on this subject in Japan and, to our great amazement, in Europe, only one, and in very recent times. While the family of techniques that is applied with two knees on the ground has gone over time, increasing, without increasing the immediate traumas. this posed the problem if these techniques were really dangerous. It was decided to investigate in a comprehensive way, on the immediate traumas, by Biomechanics of the technique aimed at the safety of Tori, from children in the dojo up to high-level competitions. With the purpose to clarify: if the technique is dangerous, in its correct execution, for children and athletes, if the technique is dangerous for the accumulation of traumas in the long run build up a mathematical model of interaction between knees and Tatami. The experimental part was developed with a thermal imaging camera that allowed to highlight the actual impact surfaces and therefore to trace the stress received by the knees, both for the children and for the athletes of the Italian National Team. the results have made clear that, if well done and on a certified tatami, the technique has a negligible probability of immediate trauma.

Judo Biomechanical Optimization

In this paper, for the first time, there is comprehensively tackling the problem of biomechanical optimization of a sport of situation such as judo. Starting from the optimization of more simple sports, optimization of this kind of complex sports is grounded on a general physics tool such as the analysis of variation. The objective function is divided for static and dynamic situation of Athletes couple, and it is proposed also a sort of dynamic programming problem Strategic Optimization. A dynamic programming problem is an optimization problem in which decisions have to be taken sequentially over several time periods linked in some fashion. A strategy for a dynamic programming problem is just a contingency plan, a plan that specifies what is to be done at each stage as a function of all that has transpired up to that point. It is possible to demonstrate, under some conditions, that a Markovian optimal strategy is an optimal strategy for the dynamic programming problem under examination. At last we try to approach the optimization of couple of athletes motion. Shifting s Trajectories study is a very hard and complex work, because falls among fractal, self similar trajectories produced by Chaotic, irregular, Dynamics. It is possible to Optimize Athletes motion planning. Motion planning could be defined as the problem of finding a collision free trajectory from the start configuration to the goal configuration. It is possible to treat motion as an optimization problem, to search the trajectory that drive adversary into a final broken symmetry position, where it is possible to collide and apply one of the two throwing tools: Couple or Lever.

Uchi Mata family analysis for Coaches and Teachers

In this paper it is performed the biomechanical analysis of Uchi Mata family, the unifying vision of biomechanics let coaches and teachers to approach competition and lessons in different way. Uchi Mata and all throws that are in the biomechanical group of Couple applied by trunk - leg showed that these most effective techniques in high level competition, are in fact also energetically less expensive than those of the Lever group. The overview of the sportive judo books that show the different kind of Uchi Mata, for example, are in term of Biomechanics always the same movement. The Japanese different vision informed also the studies among the world that never analyzed the unifying vision. The complementary tools to increase the effectiveness are also analyzed and few New or Chaotic application of trunk-leg family. The Physical and biomechanical background is analyzed showing that these throws are also bio-mechanically simpler, relying only on closing the distance and apply Couple . GAI plus Couple. Their intrinsic simplicity, however, hides a different complexity from those of the Lever which, remember, they need a high motor coordination to be effective. In fact, being able to apply these techniques of Couple require a particular timing ability.

Judo the roads to Ippon

In this invited lecture the biomechanical analysis of tactical tools utilized by top athletes in high level competition is presented. In the first part, the lecture starts with a very short summary of the researches carried out on biomechanics, thermal exchange and metabolic energy expenditure related to judo throwing technique. In the second part it is developed the specific analysis of the technical tactical support tools. These tools allow to enhance the effectiveness of the athletes special throwing techniques,Tokui Waza, increasing the probability to obtain Ippon. The last part of the lecture emphasizes, the physics and biomechanics connected to judo competition that is defined as:an interacting complex nonlinear system, with chaotic and fractals aspect. This system must be analyzed studying the motion of couple of athletes system and evaluating their interaction, throws.Brownian tools are today the actual most sophisticated way of modeling motion in competition, starting from fractals till to multifractals aspects. If we study the specific mechanics of several throwing action in real competitions we can face some interesting physical aspects not totally well known, like almost plastic collision between extended bodies and for some Lever techniques we have to solve dynamical problem of bodies with variable mass that differs from the well known Classical Mechanics with constant mass. In effect, in such a situation, the general methodological approach of mechanics must be properly modified; considering a deformable body with a finite extension, where special emphasis is given to the variable rotational inertia during throw, with interesting consequences about balance, linear and rotational momentum and motion of center of mass.

Astonishing Judo, first contact tactics: A Biomechanical evaluation of tactics at start of high level competitions

This paper is focalized on the limit application of judo throws, by tactics at first contact time, with some astonishing information at a first seeing, but biomechanically grounded, not often applied or because against the sound common sense or out the old oral judo tradition. To do so we provide an appraisal of the grips concept and his consequences in the Olympic sport judo from a biomechanics perspective, we will try to deeper both the concept and the function of grips and define the potential application of some throws without grips. Broadening this situation we try to underline some specific throwing situation in which grips are or not at all applied or applied in non conventional way. We describe at first the problem from the theoretical point of view. And as second point we try to find practical application, original or already developed in high level competitions. The provocative words Judo without grips or throw without grips are connected to the limit application of some biomechanical tricks, grounded on two well known physical principles: the time advance in the attack, in Japanese Sen no Sen (already applied in real competitions), and the utilization of the own inertia connected to high attack speed to apply in totally original way one of the two biomechanical tools utilized to throw the human body.

How to enhance effectiveness of Direct Attack Judo throws

In this paper is performed an appraisal of the Olympic Sport Judo effectiveness in the optics of Biomechanics. To broaden the classical view, the field of experimentation is obviously the high level competition in which most of rotational application can be found applied more or less instinctively by high level Athletes. Considering the two biomechanical tools that are the physical basis of judo throws it is possible to obtain such results from the analysis of high competition application:Lever Techniques are enhanced in their effectiveness in three ways: The rotational movements, strictly connected to the Lever techniques mechanics achieving victory in competition, can be extended to the unbalance phase. The rotational movements can be applied in a totally new way putting away even the unbalance that is basic in the Lever techniques. The Lever tool can be hybridized with the Couple tool to lower the energy consumption. Couple Techniques are enhanced in their effectiveness also in three ways: The Couple tool that doesnt need unbalance allowing uke body rotate around his center of mass, is enhanced utilizing the Uke body smaller resistance directions, normally summarized in Diagonal attacks. The vertical rotational movements in the transverse plan with the axis in the sagittal plane can be added to the Couple application with transverse rotation and axis in the frontal plane to overcome some defensive resistance, mainly in the trunk and leg group of Couple techniques, like Uchi Mata or O Soto Gari. The rotational movements enhance the throwing action changing the mechanics of Couple into Lever applying a Torque, both with the direction change of one force or the time delay of his application. This analysis, expanded with a short physical framework, clarifies hidden deep concepts and helps teacher and coaches in their professional work.

Judo: how to enhance tactics in competition, biomechanics of combination and action reaction

This paper is an ideal continuation of the previous one - How to enhance effectiveness of Direct Attack Judo throws -in it there are analyzed the two following parts of Judo tactics in high level competitions: combination, and action-reaction. The paper start with a review of the Japanese approach to Initiative ( Sen) and follows by the biomechanical view of the same subject. High level competitions are the main argument not only of coaches match analysis , but also of a lot of scientific researches. However the connection between these two field that analyze the same subject is very hard . A lot of information are not easily transfer to coaching area. In this paper the effort to give coaching useful information is the primary aspect also at detriment of some formal mechanical information. After a new Operative Classification of throwing techniques , the biomechanical analysis of combination and action-reaction tricks flows in easy way singling out some interesting finding, useful for coaches. With this effort the biomechanical analysis of judo Interaction in high level competition could be considered completed

Techniques frequently used during London Olympic judo tournaments: a biomechanical approach

Feedback between training and competition should be considered in athletic training. The aim of the study was contemporary coaching tendencies in women s and men s judo with particular focus on a biomechanical classification of throws and grappling actions. Throwing technique frequencies grouped in the seven biomechanical classes were dependent on gender. A significant difference was found between frequencies of variable arm of physical lever technique scored by males and females as compared to the techniques counts. Significant differences between men who competed in extra lightweight and heavy weight concerned the frequency of the techniques used with maximum arm or variable arm of physical lever and a couple of forces applied by trunk and legs.In females a tendency to higher frequency of techniques that used couple of forces applied by arm or arms and leg was observed in extra lightweight compared to the heavy weight. Because the technique preferred in the fight depends on a gender and weight category of a judoka, the relationships found in this study, which can be justified by the biomechanics of throws, should be taken into consideration in technical and tactical coaching of the contestants. A method used in this study can be recommended for future research concerning coaching tendencies

A Biomechanical Reassessment of the Scientific Foundations of Jigoro Kano's Kodokan Judo

In this paper we provide an appraisal of the scientific foundations of the Olympic sport "judo" from a Western perspective, i.e. a biomechanical reassessment of the basic teaching tools of the foundations of Jigoro Kano's Kodokan judo. The core of judo functional organization is the triad made up by the "Kuzushi-Tsukuri-Kake" movement. Kuzushi (unbalance), tsukuri (entry and proper fitting of Tori's [the actor] body into the position prior to the throwing phase), and kake (execution of the judo throwing action) occur as one effective movement without separation. Biomechanical analysis is able to broaden and deepen these steps proposed by Kanō, who for didactic reasons had separated the whole movement into three steps, as was pointed out previously by old Japanese biomechanical studies. The results of our biomechanical reassessment support: The importance of broadening the unbalance concept to the dynamic situation.Singling out the existence of two classes of paths and trajectories called "Action Invariants". The first, "General Action Invariants", are connected to the whole body motion for shortening the distance in the kuzushi/tsukuri phase; the second one, the "Specific Action Invariants", are connected to the superior and inferior kinetic chains motion and right positioning connected to both the kuzushi and tsukuri phases. The existence of two basic physical principles of throwing in according to a new classification. In a clear way the basic mechanical steps of all throws, and also show hidden connections, similarities and differences among judo throwing techniques, making this reassessment particularly useful from a didactic point of view. Demonstrate that this biomechanical approach is also able to understand how new and innovative technical variations are born. Our reassessment helps clarifying his concept and facilitates teachers and coaches in their professional work.

Biomechanics of Kuzushi-Tsukuri and Interaction in Competition

In this paper it is performed the comparative biomechanical analysis of the Kuzushi (Unbalance) -Tsukuri (the entry and proper fitting of Tori's body into the position taken just before throwing) phases of Judo Throwing techniques. The whole effective movement is without separation, as already stated by old Japanese biomechanical studies (1972 -1978), only one skilled connected action, but the biomechanical analysis is able to separate the whole in didactic steps called Action Invariants. The first important finding singled out is the existence of two classes of Action Invariants the first the General one' connected to the whole body motion is specific of shortening distance in the Kuzushi Tsukuri Phase. The second one, the Specific Action Invariants is connected to the superior and inferior kinetic chains motion and right positioning connected both to Kuzushi and Tsukuri phases. Some interesting findings derive from this analysis: among throwing techniques, couple techniques could be independent from Kuzushi; instead physical lever groups need all two action invariants to be performed successfully and as complex motor skill they are more difficult to perform than the first ones. Complexity in motion is connected to the energy consumption, and to the skill ability of athletes. This biomechanical comparative analysis is useful from the didactic point of view, clarifying the basic mechanical steps of all throws, and showing also hidden connections, similarities and differences among throwing Judo techniques. The last part of the paper concerns the study on Interaction in Competition, performed by the author, showing 20 years results on Judo Biomechanics.

Match Analysis an undervalued coaching tool

From a Biomechanical point of view, Judo competition is an intriguing complex nonlinear system, with many chaotic and fractals aspects, It is also the test bed in which all coaching capabilities and athlete's performances are evaluated and put to the test. Competition is the moment of truth of all conditioning time, preparation and technical work, before developed, and it is also the climax of the teaching point of view. Furthermore, it is the most important source of technical assessment. Studying it is essential to the coaches because they can obtain useful information for their coaching. Match Analysis could be seen as the master key in all situation sports (dual or team) like Judo, to help in useful way the difficult task of coach or best for National or Olympic coaching equips. In this paper it is presented a short summary of the most important methodological achievement in judo match analysis. It is also presented, at light of the last technological improvement, the first systematization toward new fields. On the basis of technological development, Match Analysis could be a valuable source of four levels of information: 1st. Athlete's Physiological data 2nd. Athlete's Technical data 3rd. Athlete's Strategically data 4th. Adversary's Scouting These new interesting ways opened by this powerful coaching help, are very useful for national team technical management. In the last part of the paper, the analysis is focalized toward a, till now, misused information: "Dromograms" (athletes' shifting paths) study as useful source of fighting habit of athletes.
