Multivariate non-Gaussian models for financial applications

In this paper we consider several continuous-time multivariate non-Gaussian models applied to finance and proposed in the literature in the last years. We study the models focusing on the parsimony of the number of parameters, the properties of the dependence structure, and the computational tractability. For each model we analyze the main features, we provide the characteristic function, the marginal moments up to order four, the covariances and the correlations. Thus, we describe how to calibrate them on the time-series of log-returns with a view toward practical applications and possible numerical issues. To empirically compare these models, we conduct an analysis on a five-dimensional series of stock index log-returns.

Smart network based portfolios

In this article we deal with the problem of portfolio allocation by enhancing network theory tools. We use the dependence structure of the correlations network in constructing some well-known risk-based models in which the estimation of correlation matrix is a building block in the portfolio optimization. We formulate and solve all these portfolio allocation problems using both the standard approach and the network-based approach. Moreover, in constructing the network-based portfolios we propose the use of two different estimators for the covariance matrix: the sample estimator and the shrinkage toward constant correlation one. All the strategies under analysis are implemented on two high-dimensional portfolios having different characteristics, covering the period from January $2001$ to December $2017$. We find that the network-based portfolio consistently better performs and has lower risk compared to the corresponding standard portfolio in an out-of-sample perspective.

Multivariate Mixed Tempered Stable Distribution

The multivariate version of the Mixed Tempered Stable is proposed. It is a generalization of the Normal Variance Mean Mixtures. Characteristics of this new distribution and its capacity in fitting tails and capturing dependence structure between components are investigated. We discuss a random number generating procedure and introduce an estimation methodology based on the minimization of a distance between empirical and theoretical characteristic functions. Asymptotic tail behavior of the univariate Mixed Tempered Stable is exploited in the estimation procedure in order to obtain a better model fitting. Advantages of the multivariate Mixed Tempered Stable distribution are discussed and illustrated via simulation study.
