Patterned matrices with random walk entries

It is well known that the weak limit of a suitably scaled continuous-time random walk (CTRW) is the Brownian motion. We investigate the convergence of certain patterned random matrices whose entries are independent CTRWs and their time-changed versions, in a non-commutative probability framework. For the Wigner link function, the limits are free Brownian motion and its time-changed version driven by an inverse stable subordinator. For the symmetric circulant and the circulant with CTRW entries, we use their explicit eigenvalue expressions to define some empirical processes that converge weakly to a Brownian motion and a complex Brownian motion, respectively. For matrices with iid entries, and for elliptic matrices, the algebraic limits are equal in $*$-distribution to processes whose marginals are circular and elliptic variables, respectively. A random time-changed variant of these results is also established.

$XX^T$ Matrices With Independent Entries

Let $S=XX^T$ be the (unscaled) sample covariance matrix where $X$ is a real $p \times n$ matrix with independent entries. It is well known that if the entries of $X$ are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) with enough moments and $p/n \to y\neq 0$, then the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of $\frac{1}{n}S$ converges to a Mar$\check{\text{c}}$enko-Pastur law. Several extensions of this result are also known. We prove a general result on the existence of the LSD of $S$ in probability or almost surely, and in particular, many of the above results follow as special cases. At the same time several new LSD results also follow from our general result. The moments of the LSD are quite involved but can be described via a set of partitions. Unlike in the i.i.d. entries case, these partitions are not necessarily non-crossing, but are related to the special symmetric partitions which are known to appear in the LSD of (generalised) Wigner matrices with independent entries. We also investigate the existence of the LSD of $S_{A}=AA^T$ when $A$ is the $p\times n$ symmetric or the asymmetric version of any of the following four random matrices: reverse circulant, circulant, Toeplitz and Hankel. The LSD of $\frac{1}{n}S_{A}$ for the above four cases have been studied by Bose, Gangopadhyay and Sen in 2010, when the entries are i.i.d. We show that under some general assumptions on the entries of $A$, the LSD of $S_{A}$ exists and this result generalises the existing results significantly.

Sample covariance matrices and special symmetric partitions

Suppose $X_p$ is a real $p \times n$ matrix with independent entries and consider the (unscaled) sample covariance matrix $S_p=X_pX_p^T$. The Marchenko-Pastur law was discovered as the limit of the bulk distribution of the sample covariance matrix in 1967. There have been extensions of this result in several directions. In this paper, we consider an extension that handles several of the existing ones as well as generates new results. We show that under suitable assumptions on the entries of $X_p$, the limiting spectral distribution exists in probability or almost surely. The moments are described by a set of partitions that are beyond pair partitions and non-crossing partitions and are also related to special symmetric partitions, which are known to appear in the limiting spectral distribution of Wigner-type matrices. Similar results hold for other patterned matrices such as reverse circulant, circulant, Toeplitz, and Hankel matrices.

Some patterned matrices with independent entries

Patterned random matrices such as the reverse circulant, the symmetric circulant, the Toeplitz and the Hankel matrices and their almost sure limiting spectral distribution (LSD), have attracted much attention. Under the assumption that the entries are taken from an i.i.d. sequence with finite variance, the LSD are tied together by a common thread -- the $2k$th moment of the limit equals a weighted sum over different types of pair-partitions of the set $\{1, 2, \ldots, 2k\}$ and are universal. Some results are also known for the sparse case. In this paper we generalise these results by relaxing significantly the i.i.d. assumption. For our models, the limits are defined via a larger class of partitions and are also not universal. Several existing and new results for patterned matrices, their band and sparse versions, as well as for matrices with continuous and discrete variance profile follow as special cases.

Spectral measure of empirical autocovariance matrices of high dimensional Gaussian stationary processes

Consider the empirical autocovariance matrix at a given non-zero time lag based on observations from a multivariate complex Gaussian stationary time series. The spectral analysis of these autocovariance matrices can be useful in certain statistical problems, such as those related to testing for white noise. We study the behavior of their spectral measures in the asymptotic regime where the time series dimension and the observation window length both grow to infinity, and at the same rate. Following a general framework in the field of the spectral analysis of large random non-Hermitian matrices, at first the probabilistic behavior of the small singular values of the shifted versions of the autocovariance matrix are obtained. This is then used to infer about the large sample behaviour of the empirical spectral measure of the autocovariance matrices at any lag. Matrix orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle play a crucial role in our study.

Distribution of Eigenvalues of Matrix Ensembles arising from Wigner and Palindromic Toeplitz Blocks

Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has successfully modeled diverse systems, from energy levels of heavy nuclei to zeros of $L$-functions; this correspondence has allowed RMT to successfully predict many number theoretic behaviors. However there are some operations which to date have no RMT analogue. Our motivation is to find an RMT analogue of Rankin-Selberg convolution, which constructs a new $L$-functions from an input pair. We report one such attempt; while it does not appear to model convolution, it does create new ensembles with properties hybridizing those of its constituents. For definiteness we concentrate on the ensemble of palindromic real symmetric Toeplitz (PST) matrices and the ensemble of real symmetric matrices, whose limiting spectral measures are the Gaussian and semi-circular distributions, respectively; these were chosen as they are the two extreme cases in terms of moment calculations. For a PST matrix $A$ and a real symmetric matrix $B$, we construct an ensemble of random real symmetric block matrices whose first row is $\lbrace A, B \rbrace$ and whose second row is $\lbrace B, A \rbrace$. By Markov's Method of Moments and the use of free probability, we show this ensemble converges weakly and almost surely to a new, universal distribution with a hybrid of Gaussian and semi-circular behaviors. We extend this construction by considering an iterated concatenation of matrices from an arbitrary pair of random real symmetric sub-ensembles with different limiting spectral measures. We prove that finite iterations converge to new, universal distributions with hybrid behavior, and that infinite iterations converge to the limiting spectral measure of the dominant component matrix.

Modelling COVID-19 -- I A dynamic SIR(D) with application to Indian data

We propose an epidemiological model using an adaptive dynamic three compartment (with four states) SIR(D) model. Our approach is similar to non-parametric curve fitting in spirit and automatically adapts to key external factors, such as interventions, while retaining the parsimonious nature of the standard SIR(D) model. Initial dynamic temporal estimates of the model parameters are obtained by minimising the aggregate residual sum of squares across the number of infections, recoveries, and fatalities, over a chosen lag period. Then a geometric smoother is applied to obtain the final time series of estimates. These estimates are used to obtain dynamic temporal robust estimates of the key feature of this pandemic, namely the "reproduction number". We illustrate our method on the Indian COVID-19 data for the period March 14 - August 31, 2020. The time series data plots of the 36 states and union territories shows a clear presence of inter-regional variation in the prognosis of the epidemic. This is also bourne out by the estimates of the underlying parameters, including the reproduction numbers for the 36 regions. Due to this, an SIR(D) model, dynamic or otherwise, on the national aggregate data is not suited for robust local predictions. The time series of estimates of the model enables us to carry out daily, weekly and also long term predictions, including construction of predictive bands. We obtain an excellent agreement between the actual data and the model predicted data at the regional level. Our estimates of the current reproduction number turn out to be more than 2 in three regions (Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh) and between 1.5 and 2 in 13 regions. Each of these regions have experienced an individual trajectory, which typically involves initial phase of shock(s) followed by a relatively steady lower level of the reproduction number.

Large sample behaviour of high dimensional autocovariance matrices

The existence of limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of $\hatΓ_u+\hatΓ_u^*$, the symmetric sum of the sample autocovariance matrix $\hatΓ_u$ of order $u$, is known when the observations are from an infinite dimensional vector linear process with appropriate (strong) assumptions on the coefficient matrices. Under significantly weaker conditions, we prove, in a unified way, that the LSD of any symmetric polynomial in these matrices such as $\hatΓ_u+\hatΓ_u^*$, $\hatΓ_u\hatΓ_u^*$, $\hatΓ_u\hatΓ_u^*+\hatΓ_k\hatΓ_k^*$ exist. Our approach is through the more intuitive algebraic method of free probability in conjunction with the method of moments. Thus, we are able to provide a general description for the limits in terms of some freely independent variables. All the previous results follow as special cases. We suggest statistical uses of these LSD and related results in order determination and white noise testing.

Bulk behaviour of Schur-Hadamard products of symmetric random matrices

We develop a general method for establishing the existence of the Limiting Spectral Distributions (LSD) of Schur-Hadamard products of independent symmetric patterned random matrices. We apply this method to show that the LSDs of Schur-Hadamard products of some common patterned matrices exist and identify the limits. In particular, the Schur-Hadamard product of independent Toeplitz and Hankel matrices has the semi-circular LSD. We also prove an invariance theorem that may be used to find the LSD in many examples.

Bulk behaviour of skew-symmetric patterned random matrices

Limiting Spectral Distributions (LSD) of real symmetric patterned matrices have been well-studied. In this article, we consider skew-symmetric/anti-symmetric patterned random matrices and establish the LSDs of several common matrices. For the skew-symmetric Wigner, skew-symmetric Toeplitz and the skew-symmetric Circulant, the LSDs (on the imaginary axis) are the same as those in the symmetric cases. For the skew-symmetric Hankel and the skew-symmetric Reverse Circulant however, we obtain new LSDs. We also show the existence of the LSDs for the triangular versions of these matrices. We then introduce a related modification of the symmetric matrices by changing the sign of the lower triangle part of the matrices. In this case, the modified Wigner, modified Hankel and the modified Reverse Circulants have the same LSDs as their usual symmetric counterparts while new LSDs are obtained for the modified Toeplitz and the modified Symmetric Circulant.

Limiting spectral distribution of sample autocovariance matrices

We show that the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) of the sample autocovariance matrix (ACVM) converges as the dimension increases, when the time series is a linear process with reasonable restriction on the coefficients. The limit does not depend on the distribution of the underlying driving i.i.d. sequence and its support is unbounded. This limit does not coincide with the spectral distribution of the theoretical ACVM. However, it does so if we consider a suitably tapered version of the sample ACVM. For banded sample ACVM the limit has unbounded support as long as the number of non-zero diagonals in proportion to the dimension of the matrix is bounded away from zero. If this ratio tends to zero, then the limit exists and again coincides with the spectral distribution of the theoretical ACVM. Finally, we also study the LSD of a naturally modified version of the ACVM which is not non-negative definite.

Convergence of joint moments for independent random patterned matrices

It is known that the joint limit distribution of independent Wigner matrices satisfies a very special asymptotic independence, called freeness. We study the joint convergence of a few other patterned matrices, providing a framework to accommodate other joint laws. In particular, the matricial limits of symmetric circulants and reverse circulants satisfy, respectively, the classical independence and the half independence. The matricial limits of Toeplitz and Hankel matrices do not seem to submit to any easy or explicit independence/dependence notions. Their limits are not independent, free or half independent.

Joint convergence of several copies of different patterned random matrices

We study the joint convergence of independent copies of several patterned matrices in the noncommutative probability setup. In particular, joint convergence holds for the well known Wigner, Toeplitz, Hankel, reverse circulant and symmetric circulant matrices. We also study some properties of the limits. In particular, we show that copies of Wigner becomes asymptotically free with copies of any of the above other matrices.

Resampling in Time Series Models

This project revolves around studying estimators for parameters in different Time Series models and studying their assymptotic properties. We introduce various bootstrap techniques for the estimators obtained. Our special emphasis is on Weighted Bootstrap. We establish the consistency of this scheme in a AR model and its variations. Numerical calculations lend further support to our consistency results. Next we analyze ARCH models, and study various estimators used for different error distributions. We also present resampling techniques for estimating the distribution of the estimators. Finally by simulating data, we analyze the numerical properties of the estimators.

Spectral properties of random triangular matrices

We prove the existence of the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) of symmetric triangular patterned matrices and also establish the joint convergence of sequences of such matrices. For the particular case of the symmetric triangular Wigner matrix, we derive expression for the moments of the LSD using properties of Catalan words. The problem of deriving explicit formulae for the moments of the LSD does not seem to be easy to solve for other patterned matrices. The LSD of the non-symmetric triangular Wigner matrix also does not seem to be easy to establish.

Limiting Spectral Distribution of Block Matrices with Toeplitz Block Structure

We study two specific symmetric random block Toeplitz (of dimension $k \times k$) matrices: where the blocks (of size $n \times n$) are (i) matrices with i.i.d. entries, and (ii) asymmetric Toeplitz matrices. Under suitable assumptions on the entries, their limiting spectral distributions (LSDs) exist (after scaling by $\sqrt{nk}$) when (a) $k$ is fixed and $n \to\infty$ (b) $n$ is fixed and $k\rightarrow \infty$ (c) $n$ and $k$ go to $\infty$ simultaneously. Further the LSD's obtained in (a) and (b) coincide with those in (c) when $n$ or respectively $k$ tends to infinity. This limit in (c) is the semicircle law in case (i). In Case (ii) the limit is related to the limit of the random symmetric Toepiltz matrix as obtained by Bryc et al.(2006) and Hammond and Miller(2005).

Balanced random Toeplitz and Hankel Matrices

Except the Toeplitz and Hankel matrices, the common patterned matrices for which the limiting spectral distribution (LSD) are known to exist, share a common property--the number of times each random variable appears in the matrix is (more or less) same across the variables. Thus it seems natural to ask what happens to the spectrum of the Toeplitz and Hankel matrices when each entry is scaled by the square root of the number of times that entry appears in the matrix instead of the uniform scaling by $n^{-1/2}$. We show that the LSD of these balanced matrices exist and derive integral formulae for the moments of the limit distribution. Curiously, it is not clear if these moments define a unique distribution.
