On the c0c_0-equivalence and permutations of series

Assume that a convergent series of real numbers ∑n=1∞an\sum\limits_{n=1}^\infty a_n has the property that there exists a set A⊆NA\subseteq \N such that the series ∑n∈Aan\sum\limits_{n \in A} a_n is conditionally convergent. We prove that for a given arbitrary sequence (bn)(b_n) of real numbers there exists a permutation σ ⁣:N→Nσ\colon \N \to \N such that σ(n)=nσ(n) = n for every n∉An \notin A and (bn)(b_n) is c0c_0-equivalent to a subsequence of the sequence of partial sums of the series ∑n=1∞aσ(n)\sum\limits_{n=1}^\infty a_{σ(n)}. Moreover, we discuss a connection between our main result with the classical Riemann series theorem.

Large free sets in universal algebras

We prove that for each universal algebra (A,A)(A,\mathcal A) of cardinality ∣A∣≥2|A|\ge 2 and an infinite set XX of cardinality ∣X∣≥∣A∣|X|\ge|\mathcal A|, the XX-th power (AX,AX)(A^X,\mathcal A^X) of the algebra (A,A)(A,\mathcal A) contains a free subset F⊂AX\mathcal F\subset A^X of cardinality ∣F∣=2∣X∣|\mathcal F|=2^{|X|}. This generalizes the classical Fichtenholtz-Kantorovitch-Hausdorff result on the existence of an independent family I⊂P(X)\mathcal I\subset\mathcal P(X) of cardinality ∣I∣=∣P(X)∣|\mathcal I|=|\mathcal P(X)| in the Boolean algebra P(X)\mathcal P(X) of subsets of an infinite set XX.

Topological and measure properties of some self-similar sets

Given a finite subset Σ⊂RΣ\subset\mathbb{R} and a positive real number q<1q<1 we study topological and measure-theoretic properties of the self-similar set K(Σ;q)={∑n=0∞anqn:(an)n∈ω∈Σω}K(Σ;q)=\big\{\sum_{n=0}^\infty a_nq^n:(a_n)_{n\inω}\inΣ^ω\big\}, which is the unique compact solution of the equation K=Σ+qKK=Σ+qK. The obtained results are applied to studying partial sumsets E(x)={∑n=0∞xnεn:(εn)n∈ω∈{0,1}ω}E(x)=\big\{\sum_{n=0}^\infty x_n\varepsilon_n:(\varepsilon_n)_{n\inω}\in\{0,1\}^ω\big\} of some (multigeometric) sequences x=(xn)n∈ωx=(x_n)_{n\inω}.

Additivity and lineability in vector spaces

Gámez-Merino, Munoz-Fernández and Seoane-Sepúlveda proved that if additivity A(F)>c\mathcal A(\mathcal F)>\mathfrak c, then F\mathcal F is A(F)\mathcal A(\mathcal F)-lineable where F⊆RR\mathcal F\subseteq\mathbb R^\mathbb R. They asked if A(F)>c\mathcal A(\mathcal F)>\mathfrak c can be weakened. We answer this question in negative. Moreover, we introduce and study the notions of homogeneous lineability number and lineability number of subsets of linear spaces.

Multigeometric sequences and Cantorvals

For a sequence x∈l1∖c00x \in l_1 \setminus c_{00}, one can consider the achievement set E(x)E(x) of all subsums of series ∑n=1∞x(n)\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} x(n). It is known that E(x)E(x) is one of the following types of sets: * finite union of closed intervals, * homeomorphic to the Cantor set, * homeomorphic to the set TT of subsums of ∑n=1∞c(n)\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} c(n) where c(2n−1)=34nc(2n-1)=\frac{3}{4^n} and c(2n)=24nc(2n)=\frac{2}{4^n} (Cantorval). Based on ideas of Jones and Velleman, and Guthrie and Nymann we describe families of sequences which contain, according to our knowledge, all known examples of xx's with E(x)E(x) being Cantorvals.

Large free linear algebras of real and complex functions

Let XX be a set of cardinality κκ such that κω=κκ^ω=κ. We prove that the linear algebra RX\mathbb{R}^X (or CX\mathbb{C}^X) contains a free linear algebra with 2κ2^κ generators. Using this, we prove several algebrability results for spaces CC\mathbb{C}^\mathbb{C} and RR\mathbb{R}^\mathbb{R}. In particular, we show that the set of all perfectly everywhere surjective functions f:C→Cf:\mathbb{C}\to\mathbb{C} is strongly 2c2^\mathfrak{c}-algebrable. We also show that the set of all functions f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R} whose sets of continuity points equals some fixed GδG_δ set GG is strongly 2c2^\mathfrak{c}-algebrable if and only if R∖G\mathbb{R}\setminus G is c\mathfrak{c}-dense in itself.

The continuity properties of compact-preserving functions

A function f:X→Yf:X\to Y between topological spaces is called {\em compact-preserving} if the image f(K)f(K) of each compact subset K⊂XK\subset X is compact. We prove that a function f:X→Yf:X\to Y defined on a strong Frechet space XX is compact-preserving if and only if for each point x∈Xx\in X there is a compact subset Kx⊂YK_x\subset Y such that for each neighborhood Of(x)⊂YO_{f(x)}\subset Y of f(x)f(x) there is a neighborhood Ox⊂XO_x\subset X of xx such that f(Ox)⊂Of(x)∪Kxf(O_x)\subset O_{f(x)}\cup K_x and the set Kx∖Of(x)K_x\setminus O_{f(x)} is finite. This characterization is applied to give an alternative proof of a classical characterization of continuous functions on locally connected metrizable spaces as functions that preserve compact and connected sets. Also we show that for each compact-preserving function f:X→Yf:X\to Y defined on a (strong) Fréchet space XX, the restriction f∣LIf′f|LI'_f (resp. f∣LIf)f|LI_f) is continuous. Here LIfLI_f is the set of points x∈Xx\in X of local infinity of ff and LIf′LI'_f is the set of non-isolated points of the set LIfLI_f. Suitable examples show that the obtained results cannot be improved.
