Quasiclassical expressions for the free energy of superconducting systems

In the seminal work by G. Eilenberger [Z. Phys. 214, 195 (1968)], the quasiclassical expression for the free energy of spin-singlet superconductor has been suggested. Starting from the Luttinger-Ward formulation we derive the Eilenberger free energy and find its generalization for superconductor or superfluid with spin-triplet correlations. Besides ordinary superconductors with various scattering mechanisms, the obtained free energy functional can be used for systems with spin-triplet pairing such as superfluid $^3$He and superconducting systems with spatially-inhomogeneous exchange field or spin-orbit coupling. Using this general result we derive the simplified expression for the free energy in the diffusive limit in terms of the momentum-averaged propagators.

Excess magneto-resistance in multiband superconductors due to the viscous flow of composite vortices

By using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, we show that extremely diverse experimental data on flux-flow resistivity in multiband superconductors can be qualitatively explained by a composite nature of Abrikosov vortices consisting of elementary fractional vortices in different bands. In composite vortices, the ratio of a core size to electric field relaxation length is found to vary in wide limits depending on system parameters. As a result, the flux-flow magneto-resistance can strongly exceed the single-component Bardeen-Stephen estimation provided that moving vortices generate electric field stretching strongly outside the vortex cores.

Vortex motion and flux-flow resistivity in dirty multiband superconductors

The conductivity of vortex lattices in multiband superconductors with high concentration of impurities is calculated based on microscopic kinetic theory. Both the limits of high and low fields are considered, when the magnetic induction is close to or much smaller than the critical field strength $H_{c2}$, respectively. It is shown that in contrast to single-band superconductors the resistive properties are not universal but depend on the pairing constants and ratios of diffusivities in different bands. The low-field magneto-resistance can strongly exceed Bardeen-Stephen estimation in a quantitative agreement with experimental data for two-band superconductor MgB$_2$.

Shrinking of fluctuation region in a two-band superconductor

In a two-band superconductor, two qualitatively different fluctuation modes related to the gap modules contribute to free energy and heat capacity, in addition to the phase fluctuations. The first mode has divergent temperature behaviour since it accounts for the critical fluctuations around the phase transition point, Tc, along with pseudo-critical ones associated with former instability of the weaker-superconductivity component. The involvement of these two factors, competing under interband interaction, results in the Ginzburg number which increases with Tc non-monotonically, allowing the reduction up to 75%. This makes fluctuations effective for revealing additional superconducting component in the system. The second mode does not diverge, but has a jump at Tc, defined uniquely by the strength of interband interaction. This mode contributes fundamentally beyond critical domain.

Band filling effects on coherence lengths and penetration depth in the two-orbital negative-U Hubbard model of superconductivity

The two-orbital superconducting state is modeled by on-site intra-orbital negative-U Hubbard correlations together with inter-orbital pair-transfer interactions. The critical temperature is mainly governed by intra-orbital attractive interactions and it can pass through an additional maximum as a function of band filling. For the certain number of electrons the clear interband proximity effect is observable in the superconducting state of the band with a smaller gap. The influence of band fillings and orbital site energies on the temperature dependencies of two-component superconductivity coherence lengths and magnetic field penetration depth is analyzed. The presence of proximity effect is probably reflected in the relative temperature behaviour of characteristic lengths.

Correlations of superconducting fluctuations in a two-gap system

We derive analytically the spatial correlation functions for gap fluctuations in two-band scenario with intra- and interband pair-transfer interactions. These functions demonstrate the changes in spatial functionality due to the presence of two channels of coherency described by the divergent and finite correlation lengths. Even at the phase transition point both channels are essential for two-band superconductivity. Generally their relative contributions depend on the temperature and system parameters.

Critical and non-critical coherence lengths in a two-band superconductor

We study the peculiarities of coherency in a two-gap superconductor. The both intraband couplings, inducing superconductivity in the independent bands, and interband pair-transfer interaction have been taken into account. On the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau equations derived from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations and the relevant self-consistency conditions for a two-gap system, we find critical and non-critical coherence lengths in the spatial behaviour of the fluctuations of order parameters. The character of the temperature dependencies of these length scales is determined by the relative contributions from intra- and interband interaction channels.
