Nina Nikolaevna Uraltseva

Nina Uraltseva has made lasting contributions to mathematics with her pioneering work in various directions in analysis and PDEs and the development of elegant and sophisticated analytical techniques. She is most renowned for her early work on linear and quasilinear equations of elliptic and parabolic type in collaboration with Olga Ladyzhenskaya, which is the category of classics, but her contributions to the other areas such as degenerate and geometric equations, variational inequalities, and free boundaries are equally deep and significant. In this article, we give an overview of Nina Uraltseva's work with some details on selected results.

Almost minimizers for the thin obstacle problem with variable coefficients

We study almost minimizers for the thin obstacle problem with variable Hölder continuous coefficients and zero thin obstacle and establish their $C^{1,β}$ regularity on the either side of the thin space. Under an additional assumption of quasisymmetry, we establish the optimal growth of almost minimizers as well as the regularity of the regular set and a structural theorem on the singular set. The proofs are based on the generalization of Weiss- and Almgren-type monotonicity formulas for almost minimizers established earlier in the case of constant coefficients.

An epiperimetric inequality approach to the regularity of the free boundary in the Signorini problem with variable coefficients

In this paper we establish the $C^{1,β}$ regularity of the regular part of the free boundary in the Signorini problem for elliptic operators with variable Lipschitz coefficients. This work is a continuation of the recent paper [GSVG14], where two of us established the interior optimal regularity of the solution. Two of the central results of the present work are a new monotonicity formula and a new epiperimetric inequality.

Higher regularity of the free boundary in the elliptic Signorini problem

In this paper we study the higher regularity of the free boundary for the elliptic Signorini problem. By using a partial hodograph-Legendre transformation we show that the regular part of the free boundary is real analytic. The first complication in the study is the invertibility of the hodograph transform (which is only $C^{0,1/2}$) which can be overcome by studying the precise asymptotic behavior of the solutions near regular free boundary points. The second and main complication in the study is that the equation satisfied by the Legendre transform is degenerate. However, the equation has a subelliptic structure and can be viewed as a perturbation of the Baouendi-Grushin operator. By using the $L^p$ theory available for that operator, we can bootstrap the regularity of the Legendre transform up to real analyticity, which imples the real analyticity of the free boundary.

Regularity of the free boundary for the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian with drift

We establish the $C^{1+γ}$-Hölder regularity of the regular free boundary in the stationary obstacle problem defined by the fractional Laplace operator with drift in the subcritical regime. Our method of the proof consists in proving a new monotonicity formula and an epiperimetric inequality. Both tools generalizes the original ideas of G. Weiss for the classical obstacle problem to the framework of fractional powers of the Laplace operator with drift. Our study continues the earlier research, where two of us established the optimal interior regularity of solutions.

Singular Perturbation Problem in Boundary/Fractional Combustion

Motivated by a nonlocal free boundary problem, we study uniform properties of solutions to a singular perturbation problem for a boundary-reaction-diffusion equation, where the reaction term is of combustion type. This boundary problem is related to the fractional Laplacian. After an optimal uniform Hölder regularity is shown, we pass to the limit to study the free boundary problem it leads to.

Contact of a thin free boundary with a fixed one in the Signorini problem

We study the Signorini problem near a fixed boundary, where the solution is "clamped down" or "glued." We show that in general the solutions are at least $C^{1/2}$ regular and that this regularity is sharp. We prove that near the actual points of contact of the free boundary with the fixed one the blowup solutions must have homogeneity $κ\geq 3/2$, while at the non-contact points the homogeneity must take one of the values: $1/2, 3/2, \ldots, m-1/2, \ldots$.

Optimal regularity of solutions to the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian with drift

We prove existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity of solutions to the stationary obstacle problem defined by the fractional Laplacian operator with drift, in the subcritical regime. We localize our problem by considering a suitable extension operator introduced by L. Caffarelli and L. Silvestre. The structure of the extension equation is different from the one considered by L. Caffarelli, S. Salsa and L. Silvestre in their study of the obstacle problem for the fractional Laplacian without drift, in that the obstacle function has less regularity, and exhibits some singularities. To take into account the new features of the problem, we prove a new Almgren-type monotonicity formula, which we then use to establish the optimal regularity of solutions.

Parabolic Boundary Harnack Principles in Domains with Thin Lipschitz Complement

We prove forward and backward parabolic boundary Harnack principles for nonnegative solutions of the heat equation in the complements of thin parabolic Lipschitz sets given as subgraphs $E=\{(x,t): x_{n-1}\leq f(x'',t),x_n=0\}\subset \mathbb{R}^{n-1}\times\mathbb{R} $ for parabolically Lipschitz functions $f$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n-2}\times\mathbb{R}$. We are motivated by applications to parabolic free boundary problems with thin (i.e co-dimension two) free boundaries. In particular, at the end of the paper we show how to prove the spatial $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the free boundary in the parabolic Signorini problem.

The two-phase fractional obstacle problem

We study minimizers of the functional $$ \int_{B_1^+}|\nabla u|^2 x_n^a\,d x +2\int_{B_1'} (λ_+ u^++λ_- u^-)\,d x', $$ for $a\in(-1,1)$. The problem arises in connection with heat flow with control on the boundary. It can also be seen as a non-local analogue of the, by now well studied, two-phase obstacle problem. Moreover, when $u$ does not change signs this is equivalent to the fractional obstacle problem. Our main results are the optimal regularity of the minimizer and the separation of the two free boundaries $Γ^+=\partial'\{u(\cdot,0)>0\}$ and $Γ^-=\partial'\{u(\cdot,0)<0\}$ when $a\geq 0$.

Some New Monotonicity Formulas and the Singular Set in the Lower Dimensional Obstacle Problem

We construct two new one-parameter families of monotonicity formulas to study the free boundary points in the lower dimensional obstacle problem. The first one is a family of Weiss type formulas geared for points of any given homogeneity and the second one is a family of Monneau type formulas suited for the study of singular points. We show the uniqueness and continuous dependence of the blowups at singular points of given homogeneity. This allows to prove a structural theorem for the singular set. Our approach works both for zero and smooth non-zero lower dimensional obstacles. The study in the latter case is based on a generalization of Almgren's frequency formula, first established by Caffarelli, Salsa, and Silvestre.
