Accuracy guarantees for L1-recovery

We discuss two new methods of recovery of sparse signals from noisy observation based on $\ell_1$- minimization. They are closely related to the well-known techniques such as Lasso and Dantzig Selector. However, these estimators come with efficiently verifiable guaranties of performance. By optimizing these bounds with respect to the method parameters we are able to construct the estimators which possess better statistical properties than the commonly used ones. We also show how these techniques allow to provide efficiently computable accuracy bounds for Lasso and Dantzig Selector. We link our performance estimations to the well known results of Compressive Sensing and justify our proposed approach with an oracle inequality which links the properties of the recovery algorithms and the best estimation performance when the signal support is known. We demonstrate how the estimates can be computed using the Non-Euclidean Basis Pursuit algorithm.

On Low Rank Matrix Approximations with Applications to Synthesis Problem in Compressed Sensing

We consider the synthesis problem of Compressed Sensing - given s and an MXn matrix A, extract from it an mXn submatrix A', certified to be s-good, with m as small as possible. Starting from the verifiable sufficient conditions of s-goodness, we express the synthesis problem as the problem of approximating a given matrix by a matrix of specified low rank in the uniform norm. We propose randomized algorithms for efficient construction of rank k approximation of matrices of size mXn achieving accuracy bounds O(1)sqrt({ln(mn)/k) which hold in expectation or with high probability. We also supply derandomized versions of the approximation algorithms which does not require random sampling of matrices and attains the same accuracy bounds. We further demonstrate that our algorithms are optimal up to the logarithmic in m and n factor. We provide preliminary numerical results on the performance of our algorithms for the synthesis problem.

On Verifiable Sufficient Conditions for Sparse Signal Recovery via $\ell_1$ Minimization

We propose novel necessary and sufficient conditions for a sensing matrix to be "$s$-good" - to allow for exact $\ell_1$-recovery of sparse signals with $s$ nonzero entries when no measurement noise is present. Then we express the error bounds for imperfect $\ell_1$-recovery (nonzero measurement noise, nearly $s$-sparse signal, near-optimal solution of the optimization problem yielding the $\ell_1$-recovery) in terms of the characteristics underlying these conditions. Further, we demonstrate (and this is the principal result of the paper) that these characteristics, although difficult to evaluate, lead to verifiable sufficient conditions for exact sparse $\ell_1$-recovery and to efficiently computable upper bounds on those $s$ for which a given sensing matrix is $s$-good. We establish also instructive links between our approach and the basic concepts of the Compressed Sensing theory, like Restricted Isometry or Restricted Eigenvalue properties.

Verifiable conditions of $\ell_1$-recovery of sparse signals with sign restrictions

We propose necessary and sufficient conditions for a sensing matrix to be "s-semigood" -- to allow for exact $\ell_1$-recovery of sparse signals with at most $s$ nonzero entries under sign restrictions on part of the entries. We express the error bounds for imperfect $\ell_1$-recovery in terms of the characteristics underlying these conditions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these characteristics, although difficult to evaluate, lead to verifiable sufficient conditions for exact sparse $\ell_1$-recovery and to efficiently computable upper bounds on those $s$ for which a given sensing matrix is $s$-semigood. We concentrate on the properties of proposed verifiable sufficient conditions of $s$-semigoodness and describe their limits of performance.
