Photoexcitation of electron wave packets in quantum spin Hall edge states: effects of chiral anomaly from a localised electric pulse

We show that, when a spatially localised electric pulse is applied at the edge of a quantum spin Hall system, electron wavepackets of the helical states can be photoexcited by purely intra-branch electrical transitions, without invoking the bulk states or the magnetic Zeeman coupling. In particular, as long as the electric pulse remains applied, the photoexcited densities lose their character of right- and left-movers, whereas after the ending of the pulse they propagate in opposite directions without dispersion, i.e. maintaining their space profile unaltered. Notably we find that, while the momentum distribution of the photoexcited wave packets depends on the temperature $T$ and the chemical potential $μ$ of the initial equilibrium state and displays a non-linear behavior on the amplitude of the applied pulse, in the mesoscopic regime the space profile of the wave packets is independent of $T$ and $μ$. Instead, it depends purely on the applied electric pulse, in a linear manner, as a signature of the chiral anomaly characterising massless Dirac electrons. We also discuss how the photoexcited wave packets can be tailored with the electric pulse parameters, for both low and finite frequencies.

Brane parity orders in the insulating state of Hubbard ladders

The Mott insulating state of the Hubbard model at half-filling could be depicted as a spin liquid of singly occupied sites with holon-doublon quantum fluctuations localized in pairs. In one dimension the behavior is captured by a finite value of the charge parity string correlator, which fails to remain finite when generalized to higher dimensions. We recover a definition of parity brane correlator which may remain nonvanishing in presence of interchain coupling, by assigning an appropriate fractional phase to the parity breaking fluctuations. In case of Hubbard ladders at half-filling, we find that the charge parity brane is non-zero at any repulsive value of interaction. The spin parity brane instead becomes nonvanishing in the even-leg case, in correspondence to the onset of the spin gapped D-Mott phase, which is absent in the odd-leg case. The behavior of the parity correlators is also analyzed by means of a numerical DMRG analysis of the one- and two-leg ladder.

Bipartite entanglement of quantum states in a pair basis

The unambiguous detection and quantification of entanglement is a hot topic of scientific research, though it is limited to low dimensions or specific classes of states. Here we identify an additional class of quantum states, for which bipartite entanglement measures can be efficiently computed, providing new rigorous results. Such states are written in arbitrary $d\times d$ dimensions, where each basis state in the subsystem A is paired with only one state in B. This new class, that we refer to as pair basis states, is remarkably relevant in many physical situations, including quantum optics. We find that negativity is a necessary and sufficient measure of entanglement for mixtures of states written in the same pair basis. We also provide analytical expressions for a tight lower-bound estimation of the entanglement of formation, a central quantity in quantum information.

Entanglement Generation and Dynamics for a Bose-Hubbard model in a Double-Well Potential

The study of entanglement between bosonic systems is of primary importance for establishing feasible resources needed for implementing quantum information protocols, both in their interacting atomic or photonic realizations. Atomic systems are particularly efficient in the production of large amounts of entanglement, providing higher information density than conventional qubit entangled states. Such increased quantum resources pave the way to novel fundamental tests of nature and efficient applications in quantum information, metrology and sensing. We consider a basic setup made up of two parties A and B, each one populated by a single level bosonic variable. The bosons are interacting and can hop between A and B, thus describing a two-site Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We consider the generation of quantum states in several situations that cover the majority of physical realizations: ground state, finite temperature, unitary dynamics, dissipation through dephasing and loss of particles. The system is analyzed through truncated exact diagonalization, as a function of the microscopic parameters. The non separability of the obtained quantum states is estimated by means of the negativity, which has recently been proven to be a suitable measure of entanglement. Finally, we calculate lower bounds of the entanglement of formation, an indicator that quantifies the minimal amount of entanglement resources needed to build up such states.

How Hidden Orders Generate Gaps in 1D Fermionic Systems

We demonstrate that hidden long range order is always present in the gapped phases of interacting fermionic systems on one dimensional lattices. It is captured by correlation functions of appropriate nonlocal charge and/or spin operators, which remain asymptotically finite. The corresponding microscopic orders are classified. The results are confirmed by DMRG numerical simulation of the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model, and of a Haldane insulator phase.

Quantum phases of 1D Hubbard models with three- and four-body couplings

The experimental advances in cold atomic and molecular gases stimulate the investigation of lattice correlated systems beyond the conventional on-site Hubbard approximation, by possibly including multi-particle processes. We study fermionic extended Hubbard models in a one dimensional lattice with different types of particle couplings, including also three- and four-body interaction up to nearest neighboring sites. By using the Bosonization technique, we investigate the low-energy regime and determine the conditions for the appearance of ordered phases, for arbitrary particle filling. We find that three- and four-body couplings may significantly modify the phase diagram. In particular, diagonal three-body terms that directly couple the local particle densities have qualitatively different effects from off-diagonal three-body couplings originating from correlated hopping, and favor the appearance of a Luther-Emery phase even when two-body terms are repulsive. Furthermore, the four-body coupling gives rise to a rich phase diagram and may lead to the realization of the Haldane insulator phase at half-filling.

Non-local order parameters for the 1D Hubbard model

We characterize the Mott insulator and Luther-Emery phases of the 1D Hubbard model through correlators that measure the parity of spin and charge strings along the chain. These non-local quantities order in the corresponding gapped phases and vanish at the critical point $U_c=0$. The Mott insulator consists of bound doublon-holon pairs, which in the Luther-Emery phase turn into electron pairs with opposite spins, both unbinding at $U_c$. The behavior of the parity correlators can be captured by an effective free spinless fermion model.

Quantum discord and classical correlations in the bond-charge Hubbard model: quantum phase transitions, ODLRO and violation of the monogamy property for discord

We study the quantum discord (QD) and the classical correlations (CC) in a reference model for strongly correlated electrons, the one-dimensional bond-charge extended Hubbard model. We show that the comparison of QD and CC and of their derivatives in the direct and reciprocal lattice allows one to efficiently inspect the structure of two-point driven quantum phase transitions (QPTs), discriminating those at which off diagonal long range order (ODLRO) is involved. Moreover we observe that QD between pair of sites is a monotonic function of ODLRO, thus establishing a direct relation between the latter and two point quantum correlations different from the entanglement. The study of the ground state properties allows to show that for a whole class of permutation invariant (η-pair) states quantum discord can violate the monogamy property, both in presence and in absence of bipartite entanglement. In the thermodynamic limit, due to the presence of ODLRO, the violation for η-pair states is maximal, while for the purely fermionic ground state is finite. From a general perspective, all our results validate the importance of the concepts of QD and CC for the study of critical condensed-matter systems.

Detecting the tunneling rates for strongly interacting fermions on optical lattices

Strongly interacting fermionic atoms on optical lattices are studied through a Hubbard-like model Hamiltonian, in which tunneling rates of atoms and molecules between neighboring sites are assumed to be different. In the limit of large onsite repulsion U, the model is shown to reproduce the t-J Hamiltonian, in which the J coefficient of the Heisenberg term depends on the particle-assisted tunneling rate g: explicitly, $J=4 g^2/U$. At half-filling, g drives a crossover from a Brinkman-Rice paramagnetic insulator of fully localized atoms (g=0) to the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator of the standard Hubbard case (g=t). This is observed already at the intermediate coupling regime in the number of doubly occupied sites, thus providing a criterion to extract from measurements the effective value of g.

Hidden XY structure of the bond-charge Hubbard model

The repulsive one-dimensional Hubbard model with bond-charge interaction (HBC) in the superconducting regime is mapped onto the spin-1/2 XY model with transverse field. We calculate correlations and phase boundaries, realizing an excellent agreement with numerical results. The critical line for the superconducting transition is shown to coincide with the analytical factorization line identifying the commensurate-incommensurate transition in the XY model.
