The type problem for Riemann surfaces via Fenchel-Nielsen parameters

A Riemann surface $X$ is said to be of \emph{parabolic type} if it supports a Green's function. Equivalently, the geodesic flow on the unit tangent of $X$ is ergodic. Given a Riemann surface $X$ of arbitrary topological type and a hyperbolic pants decomposition of $X$ we obtain sufficient conditions for parabolicity of $X$ in terms of the Fenchel-Nielsen parameters of the decomposition. In particular, we initiate the study of the effect of twist parameters on parabolicity. A key ingredient in our work is the notion of \textit{non standard half-collar} about a hyperbolic geodesic. We show that the modulus of such a half-collar is much larger than the modulus of a standard half-collar as the hyperbolic length of the core geodesic tends to infinity. Moreover, the modulus of the annulus obtained by gluing two non standard half-collars depends on the twist parameter, unlike in the case of standard collars. Our results are sharp in many cases. For instance, for zero-twist flute surfaces as well as half-twist flute surfaces with concave sequences of lengths our results provide a complete characterization of parabolicity in terms of the length parameters. It follows that parabolicity is equivalent to completeness in these cases. Applications to other topological types such as surfaces with infinite genus and one end (a.k.a. the infinite Loch-Ness monster), the ladder surface, Abelian covers of compact surfaces are also studied.

Combinatorial Growth in the Modular Group

We consider an exhaustion of the modular orbifold by compact subsurfaces and show that the growth rate, in terms of word length, of the reciprocal geodesics on such subsurfaces (so named low lying reciprocal geodesics) converge to the growth rate of the full set of reciprocal geodesics on the modular orbifold. We derive a similar result for the low lying geodesics and their growth rate convergence to the growth rate of the full set of closed geodesics.

Prime orthogeodesics, concave cores and families of identities on hyperbolic surfaces

We prove and explore a family of identities relating lengths of curves and orthogeodesics of hyperbolic surfaces. These identities hold over a large space of metrics including ones with hyperbolic cone points, and in particular, show how to extend a result of the first author to surfaces with cusps. One of the main ingredients in the approach is a partition of the set of orthogeodesics into sets depending on their dynamical behavior, which can be understood geometrically by relating them to geodesics on orbifold surfaces. These orbifold surfaces turn out to be exactly on the boundary of the space in which the underlying identity holds.

Generating the Mobius group with involution conjugacy classes

A {\it $k$-involution} is an involution with a fixed point set of codimension $k$. The conjugacy class of such an involution, denoted $S_k$, generates $\text{Möb}(n)$-the the group of isometries of hyperbolic $n$-space-if $k$ is odd, and its orientation preserving subgroup if $k$ is even. In this paper, we supply effective lower and upper bounds for the $S_k$ word length of $\text{Möb}(n)$ if $k$ is odd, and the $S_k$ word length of $\text{Möb}^+(n)$, if $k$ is even. As a consequence, for a fixed codimension $k$ the length of $\text{Möb}^{+}(n)$ with respect to $S_k$, $k$ even, grows linearly with $n$ with the same statement holding in the odd case. Moreover, the percentage of involution conjugacy classes for which $\text{Möb}^{+}(n)$ has length two approaches zero, as $n$ approaches infinity.

Generalizing the hyperbolic collar lemma

We discuss two generalizations of the collar lemma. The first is the stable neighborhood theorem which says that a (not necessarily simple) closed geodesic in a hyperbolic surface has a \lq\lq stable neighborhood\rq\rq whose width only depends on the length of the geodesic. As an application, we show that there is a lower bound for the length of a closed geodesic having crossing number $k$ on a hyperbolic surface. This lower bound tends to infinity with $k$. Our second generalization is to totally geodesic hypersurfaces of hyperbolic manifolds. Namely, we construct a tubular neighborhood function and show that an embedded closed totally geodesic hypersurface in a hyperbolic manifold has a tubular neighborhood whose width only depends on the area of the hypersurface (and hence not on the geometry of the ambient manifold). The implications of this result for volumes of hyperbolic manifolds is discussed. We also derive a (hyperbolic) quantitative version of the Klein-Maskit combination theorem (in all dimensions) for free products of fuchsian groups. Using this last theorem, we construct examples to illustrate the qualitative sharpness of the tubular neighborhood function.
