Charged and CP-violating Kink Solutions in the Two Higgs Doublet Model

Minimal extensions of the Standard Model (SM), such as the so-called Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), can possess several accidental discrete symmetries whose spontaneous breakdown in the early universe usually lead to the formation of domain walls. We extend an earlier work [arXiv:2006.13273] on this topic by studying in more detail the analytic properties of electrically charged and CP-violating kink solutions in the $Z_{2}$-symmetric 2HDM. We derive the complete set of equations of motion that describe the 1D spatial profile of both the 2HDM vacuum parameters and the would-be Goldstone bosons $G^{1,2,3}$ of the SM. These equations are then solved numerically using the gradient flow technique, and the results of our analysis are presented in different parametrizations of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we show analytically how an electrically charged profile should arise in 1D kink solutions when asymmetric boundary conditions are imposed on the Goldstone mode $G^{2}$ at spatial infinities, i.e. as ${x\to \pm \infty}$. If asymmetric boundary conditions are selected at ${x\to \pm \infty}$ for the Goldstone mode $G^{3}$ or the longitudinal mode $θ$ corresponding to a would-be massive photon, the derived kink solutions are then shown to exhibit CP violation. Possible cosmological implications of the electrically charged and CP-violating domain walls in the 2HDM are discussed.

Frictionless UV-finite Instantons in Curved Spacetime

We identify a new class of UV-complete instanton solutions that describe the false vacuum\- decay of a real scalar field in a particular curved spacetime background. To this end, we consider a simple scalar theory with a Coleman potential and calculate the Euclidean action $S_{\text{E}}$ by assuming an O(4)-symmetric curved spacetime. The function $a(r)$ dictating the geometry of spacetime may consistently be chosen to be a constant, thereby eliminating the drag forces from the equations of motion and ensuring that the gravitational backgrounds of both the false vacuum and bounce solutions are identical. By employing standard WKB and Gelfand-Yaglom methods, we compute the corresponding prefactor due to quantum fluctuations around this frictionless bounce solution which becomes UV finite after renormalization. The possible consequences of such frictionless UV-finite instantons are discussed.

Geometrising the Micro-Cosmos on a Supermanifold

For more than half a century, covariant and differential geometric methods have been playing a central role in the development of Quantum Field Theory (QFT). After a brief historic overview of the major scientific achievements using these methods, we will focus on the covariant and differential geometric formalism originally proposed by Vilkovisky and DeWitt (VDW). We discuss recent developments made in addressing the uniqueness of the path-integral measure of the VDW effective action, and so address the problem of quantum frame dependence in cosmologically relevant scalar-tensor theories beyond the classical approximation. Particular attention will be drawn to a long-standing problem concerning the obstacles that the VDW formalism was facing from its original conception in describing generic QFTs that include fermions. We show how in addition to bosons the VDW effective action can be extended to supermanifolds to include fermions. The so-extended formulation appears to be very promising for a complete geometrisation of realistic theories of micro-cosmos, such as the Standard Model and its gravitational sector.

Higgs-Sector Predictions from Maximally Symmetric multi-Higgs Doublet Models

Maximally Symmetric $n$-Higgs Doublet Models (MS-$n$HDMs)define very economic settings that enable sharp Higgs-sector predictions beyond the Standard Model (SM) potentially testable at high-energy colliders. The scalar potential of a MS-$n$HDM obeys an $\mathrm{Sp(2}n)$ symmetry, which is softly broken by bilinear scalar masses and explicitly by hypercharge and Yukawa couplings through renormalisation-group effects. The $\mathrm{Sp(2}n)$ also ensures natural SM alignment and allows for quartic coupling unification up to the Planck scale. As typical examples, we consider maximally symmetric realisations of the Type-II 2HDM and the Type-V 3HDM. We show how in terms of a few input parameters, definite predictions for the entire scalar mass spectrum of the MS-2HDM and MS-3HDM are obtained, including the SM-like Higgs-boson couplings to the gauge bosons and fermions.

Classifying Accidental Symmetries in Multi-Higgs Doublet Models

The potential of $n$-Higgs Doublet Models ($n$HDMs) contains a large number of SU(2)$_L$-preserving accidental symmetries as subgroups of the symplectic group Sp(2$n)$. To classify these, we introduce prime invariants and irreducible representations in bilinear field space that enable us to explicitly construct accidentally symmetric $n$HDM potentials. We showcase the classifications of symmetries and present the relationship among the theoretical parameters of the scalar potential for; (i) the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) and (ii) the Three Higgs Doublet Model (3HDM). We recover the maximum number of $13$ accidental symmetries for the 2HDM potential and for the first time, we present the complete list of $40$ accidental symmetries for the 3HDM potential.

Domain Wall Constraints on Two Higgs Doublet Models with $Z_2$ Symmetry

The Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM) with spontaneously broken $Z_2$ symmetry predicts a production of domain walls at the electroweak scale. We derive cosmological constraints on model parameters for both Type-I and Type-II 2HDMs from the requirement that domain walls do not dominate the Universe by the present day. For Type-I 2HDMs, we deduce the lower bound on the key parameter $\tanβ> 10^5$ for a wide range of Higgs-boson masses $\sim$ 100 GeV or greater close to the Standard Model alignment limit. In addition, we perform numerical simulations of the 2HDM with an approximate as well as an exact $Z_2$ symmetry but biased initial conditions. In both cases, we find that domain wall networks are unstable and, hence, do not survive at late times. The domain walls experience an exponential suppression of scaling in these models which can help ameliorate the stringent constraints found in the case of an exact discrete symmetry. For a 2HDM with softly-broken $Z_2$ symmetry, we relate the size of this exponential suppression to the soft-breaking bilinear parameter $m_{12}$ allowing limits to be placed on this parameter of order $μ$eV, such that domain wall domination can be avoided. In particular, for Type-II 2HDMs, we obtain a corresponding lower limit on the CP-odd phase $θ$ generated by QCD instantons, $θ\ \stackrel{>}{{}_\sim}\ 10^{-11}/(\sinβ\cosβ)$, which is in some tension with the upper limit of $θ\ \stackrel{<}{{}_\sim}\ 10^{-11}$--$10^{-10}$, as derived from the non-observation of a non-zero neutron electric dipole moment. For a $Z_2$-symmetric 2HDM with biased initial conditions, we are able to relate the size of the exponential suppression to a biasing parameter $\varepsilon$ so as to avoid domain wall domination.

Frame Covariance in Quantum Gravity

We develop a quantum effective action for scalar-tensor theories of gravity which is both spacetime diffeomorphism invariant and field reparameterisation (frame) invariant beyond the classical approximation. We achieve this by extending the Vilkovisky-DeWitt formalism, treating both the scalar fields and the components of the gravitational tensor field as coordinates describing a manifold. By using tensors covariant under diffeomorphisms of this manifold, we show that scalar-tensor theories can be written in a form that is manifestly frame invariant at both classical and quantum levels. In~the same context, we show that in order to maintain manifest frame invariance, we must modify the Feynman rules of theories with a non-trivial field space. We show that one such theory is General Relativity by demonstrating explicitly that it has a non-zero field-space Riemann tensor. Thus, when constructing theories of quantum gravity, we must deal not only with curved spacetime, but also with a curved field space. Finally, we address the cosmological frame problem by tracing its origin to the existence of a new model function that appears in the path integral measure. Once this function is fixed, we find that frame transformations have no effect on the quantisation of the theory. The uniqueness of our improved quantum effective action is discussed.

Goldstone Boson Effects on Vacuum Decay

We study the effects of Goldstone modes on the stability of the vacuum in a $U(1)$ theory for a complex scalar field. The dynamics of the field resemble those of Keplerian motion in the presence of time-dependent friction, whose equations of motion imply a conserved quantity, $L$, reminiscent of conserved angular momentum. They also imply a persistent infinite barrier at $ρ=0$ and a divergent field value at the origin of coordinates in flat spacetime, rendering any solution physically unattainable. However, in a spacetime punctured at the origin of coordinates, we find finite-action solutions to the equations of motion, which correspond to the size of the hole $a_0$, which in turn determines the tunneling point $ρ_0$ and $L$. We find that the rates of vacuum decay get drastically enhanced by many orders of magnitude for all possible orderings in which the false and true vacua are placed in the potential. Finally, we show how Goldstone modes provide the necessary energy to overcome drag forces yielding finite-action solutions for any potential, including those that no such solutions exist for real scalar fields.

Natural Alignment in Multi-Higgs Doublet Models

We present the complete set of continuous maximal symmetries that the potential of an $n$-Higgs Doublet Model ($n$HDM) should satisfy for natural Standard Model (SM) alignment. As a result, no large mass scales or fine-tuning is required for such alignment, which still persists even if these symmetries were broken softly by bilinear mass terms. In particular, the Maximal Symmetric $n$HDM (MS-$n$HDM) can provide both natural SM alignment and quartic coupling unification up to the Planck scale. Most remarkably, we show that the MS-2HDM is a very predictive extension of the SM governed by two only additional parameters: (i) the charged Higgs mass $M_{h^{\pm}}$ (or $m^2_{12}$) and (ii) $\tanβ$, whilst the quartic coupling unification scale $μ_X$ is predicted to assume two discrete values. With these two input parameters, the entire Higgs-mass spectrum of the model can be determined. Moreover, we obtain definite predictions of misalignment for the SM-like Higgs-boson couplings to the gauge bosons and to the quarks, which might be testable at future precision high-energy colliders.

Simulations of Domain Walls in Two Higgs Doublet Models

The Two Higgs Doublet Model predicts the emergence of 3 distinct domain wall solutions arising from the breaking of 3 accidental global symmetries, $Z_2$, CP1 and CP2, at the electroweak scale for specific choices of the model parameters. We present numerical kink solutions to the field equations in all three cases along with dynamical simulations of the models in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. For each kink solution we define an associated topological current. In all three cases simulations produce a network of domain walls which deviates from power law scaling in Minkowski and FRW simulations. This deviation is attributed to a winding of the electroweak group parameters around the domain walls in our simulations. We observe a local violation of the neutral vacuum condition on the domain walls in our simulations. This violation is attributed to relative electroweak transformations across the domain walls which is a general feature emerging from random initial conditions.

Diphoton Signatures from Heavy Axion Decays at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Recently, the LHC collaborations, ATLAS and CMS, have announced an excess in the diphoton channel with local significance of about $3\,σ$ around an invariant mass distribution of $\sim 750$ GeV, after analyzing new data collected at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s} = 13~{\rm TeV}$. We present a possible physical interpretation of such a signature, within the framework of a minimal UV-complete model with a massive singlet pseudo-scalar state $a$ that couples to a new TeV-scale coloured vector-like fermion $F$, whose hypercharge quantum number is a non-zero integer. The pseudo-scalar state $a$ might be a heavy pseudo-Goldstone boson, such as a heavy axion, which decays into two photons and whose mass lies around the excess region. The mass of the CP-odd state $a$ and its coupling to $F$ may be due to non-perturbative effects, which can break the original Goldstone shift symmetry dynamically. The possible role that the heavy axion $a$ can play in the radiative generation of a seesaw Majorana scale and in the solution to the so-called strong CP problem is briefly discussed.

Enhanced Rates for Diphoton Resonances in the MSSM

We propose a simple mechanism for copiously producing heavy Higgs bosons with enhanced decay rates to two photons at the LHC, within the context of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model (MSSM). In the CP-conserving limit of the theory, such a diphoton resonance may be identified with the heavier CP-even $H$ boson, whose gluon-fusion production and decay into two photons are enhanced by loops of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the top quark $\tilde{t}_1$ when its mass $m_{\tilde{t}_1}$ happens to be near the $\tilde{t}^*_1\tilde{t}_1$ threshold, i.e.~for $m_{\tilde{t}_1}\!\simeq \!\frac12 M_H$. The scenario requires a relatively low supersymmetry-breaking scale $M_S\stackrel{<}{{}_\sim} 1$ TeV, but large values of the higgsino mass parameter, $μ\stackrel{>}{{}_\sim} 1$ TeV, that lead to a strong $H \tilde{t}^*_1 \tilde{t}_1$ coupling. Such parameters can accommodate the observed mass and standard-like couplings of the 125 GeV $h$ boson in the MSSM, while satisfying all other constraints from the LHC and dark matter searches. Additional enhancement to the diphoton rate could be provided by Coulombic QCD corrections and, to a lesser extent, by resonant contributions due to $\tilde{t}_1^* \tilde{t}_1$ bound states. To discuss the characteristic features of such a scenario, we consider as an illustrative example the case of a diphoton resonance with a mass of approximately 750 GeV, for which an excess was observed in the early LHC 13 TeV data and which later turned out to be simply a statistical fluctuation.

Frame-Covariant Formulation of Inflation in Scalar-Curvature Theories

We develop a frame-covariant formulation of inflation in the slow-roll approximation by generalizing the inflationary attractor solution for scalar-curvature theories. Our formulation gives rise to new generalized forms for the potential slow-roll parameters, which enable us to examine the effect of conformal transformations and inflaton reparameterizations in scalar-curvature theories. We find that cosmological observables, such as the power spectrum, the spectral indices and their runnings, can be expressed in a concise manner in terms of the generalized potential slow-roll parameters which depend on the scalar-curvature coupling function, the inflaton wavefunction, and the inflaton potential. We show how the cosmological observables of inflation are frame-invariant in this generalized potential slow-roll formalism, as long as the end-of-inflation condition is appropriately extended to become frame-invariant as well. We then apply our formalism to specific scenarios, such as the induced gravity inflation, Higgs inflation and $F(R)$ models of inflation, and obtain more accurate results, without making additional approximations to the potential. Our results are shown to be consistent to lowest order with those presented in the literature. Finally, we outline how our frame-covariant formalism can be naturally extended beyond the tree-level approximation, within the framework of the Vilkovisky--DeWitt effective action.

Symmetry-Improved 2PI Approach to the Goldstone-Boson IR Problem of the SM Effective Potential

The effective potential of the Standard Model (SM), from three loop order and higher, suffers from infra-red (IR) divergences arising from quantum effects due to massless would-be Goldstone bosons associated with the longitudinal polarizations of the W and Z bosons. Such IR pathologies also hinder accurate evaluation of the two-loop threshold corrections to electroweak quantities, such as the vacuum expectation value of the Higgs field. However, these divergences are an artifact of perturbation theory, and therefore need to be consistently resummed in order to obtain a IR-safe effective potential. The so-called Two-Particle-Irreducible (2PI) effective action provides a rigorous framework to consistently perform such resummations, without the need to resort to ad hoc subtractions or running into the risk of over-counting contributions. By considering the recently proposed symmetry-improved 2PI formalism, we address the problem of the Goldstone-boson IR divergences of the SM effective potential in the gaugeless limit of the theory. In the same limit, we evaluate the IR-safe symmetry-improved 2PI effective potential, after taking into account quantum loops of chiral fermions, as well as the renormalization of spurious custodially breaking effects triggered by fermionic Yukawa interactions. Finally, we compare our results with those obtained with other methods presented in the literature.

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS: the SHiP physics case

This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $τ\to 3μ$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation

Corrigendum to "Flavour Covariant Transport Equations: an Application to Resonant Leptogenesis"

We amend the incorrect discussion in Nucl. Phys. B 886 (2014) 569 [1] concerning the numerical examples considered there. In particular, we discuss the viability of minimal radiative models of Resonant Leptogenesis and prove that no asymmetry can be generated at $\mathcal{O}(h^4)$ in these scenarios. We present a minimal modification of the model considered in [1], where electroweak-scale right-handed Majorana neutrinos can easily accommodate both successful leptogenesis and observable signatures at Lepton Number and Flavour Violation experiments. The importance of the fully flavour-covariant rate equations, as developed in [1], for describing accurately the generation of the lepton asymmetry is reconfirmed.

Flavour Covariant Formalism for Resonant Leptogenesis

We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena and apply it to study the flavour-dynamics of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL). We show that this formalism provides a complete and unified description of RL, consistently accounting for three distinct physical phenomena: (i) resonant mixing and (ii) coherent oscillations between different heavy-neutrino flavours, as well as (iii) quantum decoherence effects in the charged-lepton sector. We describe the necessary emergence of higher-rank tensors in flavour space, arising from the unitarity cuts of partial self-energies. Finally, within a Resonant $τ$-Genesis model, we illustrate the importance of this formalism by showing that the final lepton asymmetry can vary by as much as an order of magnitude between partially flavour-dependent treatments, which do not capture all of the pertinent flavour effects.

Flavour effects in Resonant Leptogenesis from semi-classical and Kadanoff-Baym approaches

Flavour effects play an important role in the statistical evolution of particle number densities in several particle physics phenomena. We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena, in order to consistently capture all flavour effects in the system. We explicitly study the scenario of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), and show that flavour covariance requires one to consider generically off-diagonal number densities, rank-4 rate tensors in flavour space, and non-trivial generalization of the discrete symmetries C, P and T. The flavour-covariant transport equations, obtained in our semi-classical framework, describe the effects of three relevant physical phenomena: coherent heavy-neutrino oscillations, quantum decoherence in the charged-lepton sector, and resonant CP violation due to heavy-neutrino mixing. We show quantitatively that the final asymmetry is enhanced by up to an order of magnitude, for electroweak-scale heavy neutrinos, as compared to that obtained from flavour-diagonal or partially flavour off-diagonal equations. A full field-theoretic treatment in the weakly-resonant regime, based on the Kadanoff-Baym (KB) equations, confirms that heavy-neutrino oscillations and mixing are two distinct phenomena, and reproduces the results obtained in our semi-classical framework. Finally, we show that the quasi-particle ansaetze, often employed in KB approaches to RL, discard the phenomenon of mixing, capturing only oscillations and leading to an underestimate of the final asymmetry by a factor of order 2.

Looking for New Naturally Aligned Higgs Doublets at the LHC

Since the current LHC Higgs data suggest the couplings of the observed 125 GeV Higgs boson to be close to the Standard Model (SM) expectations, any extended Higgs sector must lead to the so-called SM alignment limit, where one of the Higgs bosons behaves exactly like that of the SM. In the context of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), this alignment is often associated with either decoupling of the heavy Higgs sector or accidental cancellations in the 2HDM potential. We present a novel symmetry justification for 'natural' alignment without necessarily decoupling or fine-tuning. We show that there exist only three different symmetry realizations of the natural alignment scenario in 2HDM. We analyze new collider signals for the heavy Higgs sector in the natural alignment limit, which dominantly lead to third-generation quarks in the final state and can serve as a useful observational tool during the Run-II phase of the LHC.

Mass Bounds on Light and Heavy Neutrinos from Radiative MFV Leptogenesis

We derive novel limits on the masses of the light and heavy Majorana neutrinos by requiring successful leptogenesis in seesaw models of minimal flavour violation (MFV). Taking properly into account radiative flavour effects and avoiding the limitations due to a no-go theorem on leptonic asymmetries, we find that the mass of the lightest of the observable neutrinos must be smaller than $\sim 0.05$ eV, whilst the Majorana scale of lepton number violation should be higher than $\sim 10^{12}$ GeV. The latter lower bound enables one to probe the existence of possible new scales of MFV, up to energies of $\sim 100$ TeV, in low-energy experiments, such as $μ\to eγ$ and $μ\to e$ conversion in nuclei. Possible realizations of MFV leptogenesis in Grand Unified Theories are briefly discussed.

Matter Quantum Corrections to the Graviton Self-Energy and the Newtonian Potential

We revisit the calculation of matter quantum effects on the graviton self-energy on a flat Minkowski background, with the aim to acquire a deeper understanding of the mechanism that renders the graviton massless. To this end, we derive a low-energy theorem which directly relates the radiative corrections of the cosmological constant to those of the graviton mass to all orders in perturbation theory. As an illustrative example, we consider an Abelian Higgs model with minimal coupling to gravity and show explicitly how a suitable renormalization of the cosmological constant leads to the vanishing of the graviton mass at the one-loop level. In the same Abelian Higgs model, we also calculate the matter quantum corrections to the Newtonian potential and present analytical formulae in terms of modified Bessel and Struve functions of the particle masses in the loop. We show that the correction to the Newtonian potential exhibits an exponential fall-off dependence on the distance $r$, once the non-relativistic limit with respect to the non-zero loop mass is carefully considered. For massless scalars, fermions and gauge bosons in the loops, we recover the well-known results presented in the literature.

Maximally Symmetric Two Higgs Doublet Model with Natural Standard Model Alignment

We study the Higgs mass spectrum as predicted by a Maximally Symmetric Two Higgs Doublet Model (MS-2HDM) potential based on the SO(5) group, softly broken by bilinear Higgs mass terms. We show that the lightest Higgs sector resulting from this MS-2HDM becomes naturally aligned with that of the Standard Model (SM), independently of the charged Higgs boson mass and $\tan β$. In the context of Type-II 2HDM, SO(5) is the simplest of the three possible symmetry realizations of the scalar potential that can naturally lead to the SM alignment. Nevertheless, renormalization group effects due to the hypercharge gauge coupling $g'$ and third-generation Yukawa couplings may break sizeably this SM alignment, along with the custodial symmetry inherited by the SO(5) group. Using the current Higgs signal strength data from the LHC, which disfavour large deviations from the SM alignment limit, we derive lower mass bounds on the heavy Higgs sector as a function of $\tanβ$, which can be stronger than the existing limits for a wide range of parameters. In particular, we propose a new collider signal based on the observation of four top quarks to directly probe the heavy Higgs sector of the MS-2HDM during the run-II phase of the LHC.

Natural Standard Model Alignment in the Two Higgs Doublet Model

The current LHC Higgs data provide strong constraints on possible deviations of the couplings of the observed 125 GeV Higgs boson from the Standard Model (SM) expectations. Therefore, it now becomes compelling that any extended Higgs sector must comply with the so-called SM alignment limit. In the context of the Two Higgs Doublet Model (2HDM), this alignment is often associated with either decoupling of the heavy Higgs sector or accidental cancellations in the 2HDM potential. Here we present a new solution realizing natural alignment based on symmetries, without decoupling or fine-tuning. In particular, we show that in 2HDMs where both Higgs doublets acquire vacuum expectation values, there exist only three different symmetry realizations leading to natural alignment. We discuss some phenomenological implications of the Maximally-Symmetric 2HDM based on SO(5) symmetry group and analyze new collider signals for the heavy Higgs sector, involving third-generation quarks, which can be a useful observational tool during the Run-II phase of the LHC.

Neutrinos and Collider Physics

We review the collider phenomenology of neutrino physics and the synergetic aspects at energy, intensity and cosmic frontiers to test the new physics behind the neutrino mass mechanism. In particular, we focus on seesaw models within the minimal setup as well as with extended gauge and/or Higgs sectors, and on supersymmetric neutrino mass models with seesaw mechanism and with $R$-parity violation. In the simplest Type-I seesaw scenario with sterile neutrinos, we summarize and update the current experimental constraints on the sterile neutrino mass and its mixing with the active neutrinos. We also discuss the future experimental prospects of testing the seesaw mechanism at colliders and in related low-energy searches for rare processes, such as lepton flavor violation and neutrinoless double beta decay. The implications of the discovery of lepton number violation at the LHC for leptogenesis are also studied.

Symmetry Improved 2PI Effective Action and the Infrared Divergences of the Standard Model

Resummations of infinite sets of higher-order perturbative contributions are often needed both in thermal field theory and at zero temperature. For instance, the behaviour of the Standard Model (SM) effective potential extrapolated to very high energies is known to be extremely sensitive to higher-order effects. The 2PI effective action provides a systematic approach to consistently perform such resummations. However, one of its major limitations was that its loopwise expansion introduces residual violations of possible global symmetries, thus giving rise to massive Goldstone bosons in the spontaneously broken phase of the theory. We review the recently developed symmetry-improved 2PI formalism for consistently encoding global symmetries in the 2PI approach, and discuss its satisfactory field-theoretical properties. We then apply the formalism to study the infrared divergences of the SM effective potential due to Goldstone bosons, which may affect the stability analyses of the SM. We present quantitative comparisons, for the scalar sector of the SM, with the approximate partial resummation procedure recently developed to address this problem, and show the quantitative discrepancy of the latter with the more complete 2PI approach, thus motivating further studies in this direction.

Comment on "the decoupling of heavy sneutrinos in low-scale seesaw models"

The authors of a recent communication [arXiv:1312.5318] claim to have traced an error in the existing literature regarding the evaluation of the one-loop right-handed sneutrino contributions to lepton-flavour-violating observables in supersymmetric low-scale seesaw models. In this short note, we emphasize that contrary to those authors' claim, our paper [arXiv:1212.5939] contains no such a flaw, and both our analytical and numerical results exhibit the expected decoupling property of the heavy sneutrinos in the Z-penguin graphs.

Flavour Covariant Transport Equations: an Application to Resonant Leptogenesis

We present a fully flavour-covariant formalism for transport phenomena, by deriving Markovian master equations that describe the time-evolution of particle number densities in a statistical ensemble with arbitrary flavour content. As an application of this general formalism, we study flavour effects in a scenario of resonant leptogenesis (RL) and obtain the flavour-covariant evolution equations for heavy-neutrino and lepton number densities. This provides a complete and unified description of RL, capturing three distinct physical phenomena: (i) the resonant mixing between the heavy-neutrino states, (ii) coherent oscillations between different heavy-neutrino flavours, and (iii) quantum decoherence effects in the charged-lepton sector. To illustrate the importance of this formalism, we numerically solve the flavour-covariant rate equations for a minimal RL model and show that the total lepton asymmetry can be enhanced by up to one order of magnitude, as compared to that obtained from flavour-diagonal or partially flavour off-diagonal rate equations. Thus, the viable RL model parameter space is enlarged, thereby enhancing further the prospects of probing a common origin of neutrino masses and the baryon asymmetry in the Universe at the LHC, as well as in low-energy experiments searching for lepton flavour and number violation. The key new ingredients in our flavour-covariant formalism are rank-4 rate tensors, which are required for the consistency of our flavour-mixing treatment, as shown by an explicit calculation of the relevant transition amplitudes by generalizing the optical theorem. We also provide a geometric and physical interpretation of the heavy-neutrino degeneracy limits in the minimal RL scenario. Finally, we comment on the consistency of various suggested forms for the heavy-neutrino self-energy regulator in the lepton-number conserving limit.

Kadanoff-Baym Approach to Flavour Mixing and Oscillations in Resonant Leptogenesis

We describe a loopwise perturbative truncation scheme for quantum transport equations in the Kadanoff-Baym formalism, which does not necessitate the use of the so-called Kadanoff-Baym or quasi-particle ansaetze for dressed propagators. This truncation scheme is used to study flavour effects in the context of Resonant Leptogenesis (RL), showing explicitly that, in the weakly-resonant regime, there exist two distinct and pertinent flavour effects in the heavy-neutrino sector: (i) the resonant mixing and (ii) the oscillations between different heavy-neutrino flavours. Moreover, we illustrate that Kadanoff-Baym and quasi-particle ansaetze, whilst appropriate for the flavour-singlet dressed charged-lepton and Higgs propagators of the RL scenario, should not be applied to the dressed heavy-neutrino propagators. The use of these approximations for the latter is shown to capture only flavour oscillations, whilst discarding the separate phenomenon of flavour mixing.

New Production Mechanism for Heavy Neutrinos at the LHC

We study a new production mechanism for heavy neutrinos at the LHC, which dominates over the usually considered $s$-channel $W$-exchange diagram for heavy-neutrino masses larger than 100 - 200 GeV. The new mechanism is infrared-enhanced by $t$-channel $Wγ$-fusion processes. This has important implications for experimental tests of the seesaw mechanism of neutrino masses, and in particular, for the ongoing heavy neutrino searches at the LHC. We find that the direct collider limits on the light-to-heavy neutrino mixing can be significantly improved, when this new production channel is properly taken into account. The scope of this new mechanism can equally well be extended to other exotic searches at the LHC.

Anomalous Fermion Mass Generation at Three Loops

We present a novel mechanism for generating gauge-invariant fermion masses through global anomalies at the three loop level. In a gauge theory, global anomalies are triggered by the possible existence of scalar or pseudoscalar states and heavy fermions, whose masses may not necessarily result from spontaneous symmetry breaking. The implications of this mass-generating mechanism for model building are discussed, including the possibility of creating low-scale fermion masses by quantum gravity effects.

Charged Lepton Flavour Violation in Supersymmetric Low-Scale Seesaw Models

We study charged lepton flavour violation in low-scale seesaw models of minimal supergravity, which realize large neutrino Yukawa couplings thanks to approximate lepton-number symmetries. There are two dominant sources of lepton flavour violation in such models. The first source originates from the usual soft supersymmetry-breaking sector, whilst the second one is entirely supersymmetric and comes from the supersymmetric neutrino Yukawa sector. Within the framework of minimal supergravity, we consider both sources of lepton flavour violation, soft and supersymmetric, and calculate a number of possible lepton-flavour-violating transitions, such as the photonic decays of muons and taus, mu -> e gamma, tau -> e gamma and tau -> mu gamma, their neutrinoless three-body decays, mu -> e e e, tau -> e e e, tau -> mu mu mu, tau -> e e mu and tau -> e mu mu, and the coherent mu -> e conversion in nuclei. After taking into account the exclusion bounds placed by present experiments of lepton flavour violation, we derive combined theoretical limits on the universal heavy Majorana mass scale mN and the light-to-heavy neutrino mixings. Supersymmetric low-scale seesaw models offer distinct correlated predictions for lepton-flavour-violating signatures, which might be discovered in current and projected experiments, such as MEG, COMET/PRISM, Mu2e, super-BELLE and LHCb.

Lepton Dipole Moments in Supersymmetric Low-Scale Seesaw Models

We study the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of charged leptons in supersymmetric low-scale seesaw models with right-handed neutrino superfields. We consider a minimally extended framework of minimal supergravity, by assuming that CP violation originates from complex soft SUSY-breaking bilinear and trilinear couplings associated with the right-handed sneutrino sector. We present numerical estimates of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and the electron electric dipole moment (EDM), as functions of key model parameters, such as the Majorana mass scale mN and tan(β). In particular, we find that the contributions of the singlet heavy neutrinos and sneutrinos to the electron EDM are naturally small in this model, of order 10^{-27} - 10^{-28} e cm, and can be probed in the present and future experiments.

Light and Superlight Sterile Neutrinos in the Minimal Radiative Inverse Seesaw Model

We explore the possibility of light and superlight sterile neutrinos in the recently proposed Minimal Radiative Inverse Seesaw extension of the Standard Model for neutrino masses, in which all existing neutrino data can be explained. In particular, we discuss two benchmark scenarios with one of the three sterile neutrino states in the keV-range, having very small mixing with the active neutrinos to account for the Dark Matter in the Universe, while (i) the other two light sterile neutrino states could be in the eV-range, possessing a nonzero mixing with the active states as required to explain the LSND+MiniBooNE+reactor neutrino data, or (ii) one of the light sterile states is in the eV-range, whereas the second one could be superlight and almost mass-degenerate with the solar neutrinos. Such superlight sterile neutrinos could give rise to potentially observable effects in future neutrino oscillation experiments and may also offer a possible explanation for the extra radiation observed in the Universe.

Perturbative Non-Equilibrium Thermal Field Theory

We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. Our approach to non-equilibrium dynamics yields time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series that are free of pinch singularities, without the need to resort to quasi-particle approximation or effective resummations of finite widths. In our formalism, the avoidance of pinch singularities is a consequence of the consistent inclusion of finite-time effects and the proper consideration of the time of observation. After introducing a physically meaningful definition of particle number densities, we derive master time evolution equations for statistical distribution functions, which are valid to all orders in perturbation theory. The resulting equations do not rely upon a gradient expansion of Wigner transforms or involve any separation of time scales. To illustrate the key features of our formalism, we study out-of-equilibrium decay dynamics of unstable particles in a simple scalar model. In particular, we show how finite-time effects remove the pinch singularities and lead to violation of energy conservation at early times, giving rise to otherwise kinematically forbidden processes. The non-Markovian nature of the memory effects as predicted in our formalism is explicitly demonstrated.

Perturbative Non-Equilibrium Thermal Field Theory to all Orders in Gradient Expansion

We present a new perturbative formulation of non-equilibrium thermal field theory, based upon non-homogeneous free propagators and time-dependent vertices. The resulting time-dependent diagrammatic perturbation series are free of pinch singularities without the need for quasi-particle approximation or effective resummation of finite widths. After arriving at a physically meaningful definition of particle number densities, we derive master time evolution equations for statistical distribution functions, which are valid to all orders in perturbation theory and to all orders in a gradient expansion. For a scalar model, we perform a perturbative loopwise truncation of these evolution equations, whilst still capturing fast transient behaviour, which is found to be dominated by energy-violating processes, leading to the non-Markovian evolution of memory effects.

Symmetry Improved CJT Effective Action

The formalism introduced by Cornwall, Jackiw and Tomboulis (CJT) provides a systematic approach to consistently resumming non-perturbative effects in Quantum Thermal Field Theory. One major limitation of the CJT effective action is that its loopwise expansion introduces residual violations of possible global symmetries, thus giving rise to massive Goldstone bosons in the spontaneously broken phase of the theory. In this paper we develop a novel symmetry-improved CJT formalism for consistently encoding global symmetries in a loopwise expansion. In our formalism, the extremal solutions of the fields and propagators to a loopwise truncated CJT effective action are subject to additional constraints given by the Ward identities due to global symmetries. By considering a simple O(2) scalar model, we show that, unlike other methods, our approach satisfies a number of important field-theoretic properties. In particular, we find that the Goldstone boson resulting from spontaneous symmetry breaking of O(2) is massless and the phase transition is a second order one, already in the Hartree-Fock approximation. After taking the sunset diagrams into account, we show how our approach properly describes the threshold properties of the massless Goldstone boson and the Higgs particle in the loops. Finally, assuming minimal modifications to the Hartree-Fock approximated CJT effective action, we calculate the corresponding symmetry-improved CJT effective potential and discuss the conditions for its uniqueness for scalar-field values away from its minimum.

Anomalous Majorana Neutrino Masses from Torsionful Quantum Gravity

The effect of quantum torsion in theories of quantum gravity is usually described by an axion-like field which couples to matter and to gravitation and radiation gauge fields. In perturbation theory, the couplings of this torsion-descent axion field are of derivative type and so preserve a shift symmetry. This shift symmetry may be broken, if the torsion-descent axion field mixes with other axions, which could be related to moduli fields in string-inspired effective theories. In particular, the shift symmetry may break explicitly via non-perturbative effects, when these axions couple to fermions via chirality changing Yukawa couplings with appropriately suppressed coefficients. We show, how in such theories an effective right-handed Majorana neutrino mass can be generated at two loops by gravitational interactions that involve global anomalies related to quantum torsion. We estimate the magnitude of the gravitationally induced Majorana mass and find that it is highly model dependent, ranging from multi-TeV to keV scale.

Minimal Radiative Neutrino Mass Mechanism for Inverse Seesaw Models

We study a minimal one-loop radiative mechanism for generating small Majorana neutrino masses in inverse seesaw extensions of the Standard Model with two singlet fermions per family. The new feature of this radiative mechanism is that the one-loop induced left-handed neutrino mass matrix is directly proportional to the Majorana mass matrix of the right-handed neutrinos. This is a very economical scenario without necessitating the existence of non-standard scalar or gauge fields.

Minimal Resonant Leptogenesis and Lepton Flavour Violation

We discuss minimal non-supersymmetric models of resonant leptogenesis, based on an approximate flavour symmetries. As an illustrative example, we consider a resonant tau-leptogenesis model, compatible with universal right-handed neutrino masses at the GUT scale, where the required heavy-neutrino mass splittings are generated radiatively. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate, how a minimum number of three heavy Majorana neutrinos is needed, in order to obtain successful leptogenesis and experimentally testable rates for processes of lepton flavour violation, such as mu --> e gamma and mu --> e conversion in nuclei.

Radiative Corrections to Scalar Masses and Mixing in a Scale Invariant Two Higgs Doublet Model

We study the Higgs-boson mass spectrum of a classical scale-invariant realization of the two-Higgs-doublet model (SI-2HDM). The classical scale symmetry of the theory is explicitly broken by quantum loop effects due to gauge interactions, Higgs self-couplings and top-quark Yukawa couplings. We determine the allowed parameter space compatible with perturbative unitarity and electroweak precision data. Taking into account the LEP and the recent LHC exclusion limits on a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson H_SM, we obtain rather strict constraints on the mass spectrum of the heavy Higgs sector of the SI-2HDM. In particular, if M_{H_SM} \sim 125 GeV, the SI-2HDM strongly favours scenarios, in which at least one of the non-standard neutral Higgs bosons has a mass close to 400 GeV and is generically degenerate with the charged Higgs boson, whilst the third neutral Higgs scalar is lighter than ~ 500 GeV.

CP Violation in Correlated Production and Decay of Unstable Particles

We study resonant CP-violating Einstein--Podolsky--Rosen correlations that may take place in the production and decay of unstable scalar particles at high-energy colliders. We show that as a consequence of unitarity and CPT invariance of the S-matrix, in 2 --> 2 scatterings mediated by mixed scalar particles, at least three linearly independent decay matrices associated with the unstable scalar states are needed to obtain non-zero CP-odd observables that are also odd under C-conjugation. Instead, for the correlated production and decay of two unstable particle systems in 2 --> 4 processes, we find that only two independent decay matrices are sufficient to induce a net non-vanishing CP-violating phenomenon. As an application of this theorem, we present numerical estimates of CP asymmetries for the correlated production and decay of supersymmetric scalar top--anti-top pairs at the LHC, and demonstrate that these could reach values of order one. As a byproduct of our analysis, we develop a novel spinorial trace technique, which enables us to efficiently evaluate lengthy expressions of squared amplitudes describing the resonant scalar transitions.

Lepton Flavour Violation and theta(13) in Minimal Resonant Leptogenesis

We study the impact of minimal non-supersymmetric models of resonant leptogenesis on charged lepton flavour violation and the neutrino mixing angle theta(13). Possible low-scale flavour realisations of resonant tau-, mu- and e-leptogenesis provide very distinct and predictive frameworks to explain the observed baryon asymmetry in the Universe by sphaleron conversion of an individual tau-, mu- and e-lepton-number asymmetry which gets resonantly enhanced via out-of-equilibrium decays of nearly degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos. Based on approximate flavour symmetries, we construct viable scenarios of resonant tau-, mu- and e-leptogenesis compatible with universal right-handed neutrino masses at the GUT scale, where the required heavy-neutrino mass splittings are generated radiatively. The heavy Majorana neutrinos in such scenarios can be as light as 100 GeV and their couplings to two of the charged leptons may be large. In particular, we explicitly demonstrate the compelling role that the three heavy Majorana neutrinos play, in order to obtain successful leptogenesis and experimentally testable rates for lepton flavour violating processes, such as mu --> e gamma and mu --> e conversion in nuclei.

Maximal Electric Dipole Moments of Nuclei with Enhanced Schiff Moments

The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of heavy nuclei, such as 199Hg, 225Ra and 211Rn, can be enhanced by the Schiff moments induced by the presence of nearby parity-doublet states. Working within the framework of the maximally CP-violating and minimally flavour-violating (MCPMFV) version of the MSSM, we discuss the maximal values that such EDMs might attain, given the existing experimental constraints on the Thallium, neutron and Mercury EDMs. The maximal EDM values of the heavy nuclei are obtained with the help of a differential-geometrical approach proposed recently that enables the maxima of new CP-violating observables to be calculated exactly in the linear approximation. In the case of 225Ra, we find that its EDM may be as large as 6 to 50 x 10^{-27} e.cm.

On the Classification of Accidental Symmetries of the Two Higgs Doublet Model Potential

Recently, it has been shown [arXiv:1106.3482] that the two-Higgs-doublet-model potential may exhibit a maximum of 13 distinct accidental symmetries. Such a classification is based on a six-dimensional bilinear scalar field formalism realizing the SO(1,5) symmetry group. This note presents the transformation relations for each of the 13 symmetries in the original scalar field space and their one-to-one correspondence to the space of scalar bilinears, thereby providing firm support for the completeness of the classification.

Vacuum Topology of the Two Higgs Doublet Model

We perform a systematic study of generic accidental Higgs-family and CP symmetries that could occur in the two-Higgs-doublet-model potential, based on a Majorana scalar-field formalism which realizes a subgroup of GL(8,C). We derive the general conditions of convexity and stability of the scalar potential and present analytical solutions for two non-zero neutral vacuum expectation values of the Higgs doublets for a typical set of six symmetries, in terms of the gauge-invariant parameters of the theory. By means of a homotopy-group analysis, we identify the topological defects associated with the spontaneous symmetry breaking of each symmetry, as well as the massless Goldstone bosons emerging from the breaking of the continuous symmetries. We find the existence of domain walls from the breaking of Z_2, CP1 and CP2 discrete symmetries, vortices in models with broken U(1)_PQ and CP3 symmetries and a global monopole in the SO(3)_HF-broken model. The spatial profile of the topological defect solutions is studied in detail, as functions of the potential parameters of the two-Higgs doublet model. The application of our Majorana scalar-field formalism in studying more general scalar potentials that are not constrained by the U(1)_Y hypercharge symmetry is discussed. In particular, the same formalism may be used to properly identify seven additional symmetries that may take place in a U(1)_Y-invariant scalar potential.

A Geometric Approach to CP Violation: Applications to the MCPMFV SUSY Model

We analyze the constraints imposed by experimental upper limits on electric dipole moments (EDMs) within the Maximally CP- and Minimally Flavour-Violating (MCPMFV) version of the MSSM. Since the MCPMFV scenario has 6 non-standard CP-violating phases, in addition to the CP-odd QCD vacuum phase θ_QCD, cancellations may occur among the CP-violating contributions to the three measured EDMs, those of the Thallium, neutron and Mercury, leaving open the possibility of relatively large values of the other CP-violating observables. We develop a novel geometric method that uses the small-phase approximation as a starting point, takes the existing EDM constraints into account, and enables us to find maximal values of other CP-violating observables, such as the EDMs of the Deuteron and muon, the CP-violating asymmetry in b --> s γdecay, and the B_s mixing phase. We apply this geometric method to provide upper limits on these observables within specific benchmark supersymmetric scenarios, including extensions that allow for a non-zero θ_QCD.

Flavour Geometry and Effective Yukawa Couplings in the MSSM

We present a new geometric approach to the flavour decomposition of an arbitrary soft supersymmetry-breaking sector in the MSSM. Our approach is based on the geometry that results from the quark and lepton Yukawa couplings, and enables us to derive the necessary and sufficient conditions for a linearly-independent basis of matrices related to the completeness of the internal [SU(3) x U(1)]^5 flavour space. In a second step, we calculate the effective Yukawa couplings that are enhanced at large values of tan(beta) for general soft supersymmetry-breaking mass parameters. We highlight the contributions due to non-universal terms in the flavour decompositions of the sfermion mass matrices. We present numerical examples illustrating how such terms are induced by renormalization-group evolution starting from universal input boundary conditions, and demonstrate their importance for the flavour-violating effective Yukawa couplings of quarks.

The Minimal Scale Invariant Extension of the Standard Model

We perform a systematic analysis of an extension of the Standard Model that includes a complex singlet scalar field and is scale invariant at the tree level. We call such a model the Minimal Scale Invariant extension of the Standard Model (MSISM). The tree-level scale invariance of the model is explicitly broken by quantum corrections, which can trigger electroweak symmetry breaking and potentially provide a mechanism for solving the gauge hierarchy problem. Even though the scale invariant Standard Model is not a realistic scenario, the addition of a complex singlet scalar field may result in a perturbative and phenomenologically viable theory. We present a complete classification of the flat directions which may occur in the classical scalar potential of the MSISM. After calculating the one-loop effective potential of the MSISM, we investigate a number of representative scenarios and determine their scalar boson mass spectra, as well as their perturbatively allowed parameter space compatible with electroweak precision data. We discuss the phenomenological implications of these scenarios, in particular, whether they realize explicit or spontaneous CP violation, neutrino masses or provide dark matter candidates. In particular, we find a new minimal scale-invariant model of maximal spontaneous CP violation which can stay perturbative up to Planck-mass energy scales, without introducing an unnaturally large hierarchy in the scalar-potential couplings.

F_D-Term Hybrid Inflation with Electroweak-Scale Lepton Number Violation

We study F-term hybrid inflation in a novel supersymmetric extension of the SM with a subdominant Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term. We call this particular form of inflation, in short, F_D-term hybrid inflation. The proposed model ties the mu-parameter of the MSSM to an SO(3)-symmetric Majorana mass m_N, through the vacuum expectation value of the inflaton field. The late decays of the ultraheavy particles associated with the extra U(1) gauge group, which are abundantly produced during the preheating epoch, could lower the reheat temperature even up to 1 TeV, thereby avoiding the gravitino overproduction problem. The baryon asymmetry in the Universe can be explained by thermal electroweak-scale resonant leptogenesis, in a way independent of any pre-existing lepton- or baryon-number abundance. Further cosmological and particle-physics implications of the F_D-term hybrid model are briefly discussed.

Heavy Majorana Neutrino Production at e- gamma Colliders

We study signatures of heavy Majorana neutrinos at e- gamma colliders. Since these particles violate lepton number, they can give rise to the reactions e- gamma -> W- W- e+ and e- gamma -> W+ mu- mu- nu. The Standard Model background contains extra light neutrinos that escape detection, and can be reduced significantly after imposing appropriate kinematical cuts. We analyze the physics potential of an e- gamma collider, with centre of mass energies sqrt(s) = 0.5--1 TeV and a total integrated luminosity of 100/fb, for detecting heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses mN = 100--400 GeV. Assuming that heavy neutrinos couple predominantly to one lepton flavour at a time, we find that 10 expected background-free events can be established for |B_{eN}| >~ 4.6 x 10^{-3}. Quantization and High Energy Unitarity of 5D Orbifold Theories with Brane Kinetic Terms

Five-dimensional field theories compactified on an S^1/Z_2 orbifold naturally include local brane kinetic terms at the orbifold fixed points at the tree as well as the quantum level. We study the quantization of these theories before the Kaluza--Klein reduction and derive the relevant Ward and Slavnov-Taylor identities that result from the underlying gauge and Becchi-Rouet-Stora symmetries of the theory. With the help of these identities, we obtain a generalization of the equivalence theorem, where the known high-energy equivalence relation between the longitudinal Kaluza-Klein gauge modes and their respective would-be Goldstone bosons is extended to consistently include the energetically suppressed terms in the high-energy scatterings. Demanding perturbative unitarity, we compute upper limits on the number of the Kaluza-Klein modes. We find that these limits weakly depend on the size of the brane kinetic terms.

Probing Minimal 5D Extensions of the Standard Model: From LEP to an e^+e^- Linear Collider

We derive new improved constraints on the compactification scale of minimal 5-dimensional (5D) extensions of the Standard Model (SM) from electroweak and LEP2 data and estimate the reach of an e^+e^- linear collider such as TESLA. Our analysis is performed within the framework of non-universal 5D models, where some of the gauge and Higgs fields propagate in the extra dimension, while all fermions are localized on a S^1/Z_2 orbifold fixed point. Carrying out simultaneous multi-parameter fits of the compactification scale and the SM parameters to the data, we obtain lower bounds on this scale in the range between 4 and 6 TeV. These fits also yield the correlation of the compactification scale with the SM Higgs mass. Investigating the prospects at TESLA, we show that the so-called GigaZ option has the potential to improve these bounds by about a factor 2 in almost all 5D models. Furthermore, at the center of mass energy of 800 GeV and with an integrated luminosity of 10^3 fb^-1, linear collider experiments can probe compactification scales up to 20-30 TeV, depending on the control of systematic errors.

Resonant Leptogenesis

We study the scenario of thermal leptogenesis in which the leptonic asymmetries are resonantly enhanced through the mixing of nearly degenerate heavy Majorana neutrinos that have mass differences comparable to their decay widths. Field-theoretic issues arising from the proper subtraction of real intermediate states from the lepton-number-violating scattering processes are addressed in connection with an earlier developed resummation approach to unstable particle mixing in decay amplitudes. The pertinent Boltzmann equations are numerically solved after the enhanced heavy-neutrino self-energy effects on scatterings and the dominant gauge-mediated collision terms are included. We show that resonant leptogenesis can be realized with heavy Majorana neutrinos even as light as about 1 TeV, in complete accordance with the current solar and atmospheric neutrino data.

Higgs-Mediated Electric Dipole Moments in the MSSM: An Application to Baryogenesis and Higgs Searches

We perform a comprehensive study of the dominant two- and higher-loop contributions to the $^{205}$Tl, neutron and muon electric dipole moments induced by Higgs bosons, third-generation quarks and squarks, charginos and gluinos in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). We find that strong correlations exist among the contributing CP-violating operators, for large stop, gluino and chargino phases, and for a wide range of values of $\tanβ$ and charged Higgs-boson masses, giving rise to large suppressions of the $^{205}$Tl and neutron electric dipole moments below their present experimental limits. Based on this observation, we discuss the constraints that the non-observation of electric dipole moments imposes on the radiatively-generated CP-violating Higgs sector and on the mechanism of electroweak baryogenesis in the MSSM. We improve previously suggested benchmark scenarios of maximal CP violation for analyzing direct searches of CP-violating MSSM Higgs bosons at high-energy colliders, and stress the important complementary rôle that a possible high-sensitivity measurement of the muon electric dipole moment to the level of $10^{-24}$ $e$ cm can play in such analyses.

The scenario of baryogenesis through leptogenesis is reviewed in models involving heavy Majorana neutrinos. The various mechanisms of CP violation occurring in the out-of-equilibrium lepton-number-violating decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos are studied within a resummation approach to unstable-particle mixing. It is explicitly demonstrated how the resummation approach preserves crucial field-theoretic properties such as unitarity and CPT invariance. Predictions of representative scenarios are presented after solving numerically the Boltzmann equations describing the thermodynamic evolution of the Universe. Higgs Scalar-Pseudoscalar Mixing in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

In the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model, the heaviest CP-even Higgs boson H and the CP-odd Higgs scalar A are predicted to be almost degenerate in mass at the tree level, for the wide kinematic range M_A > 2M_Z and \tanβ\ge 2. However, if large soft-CP-violating Yukawa interactions involving scalar quarks of the third generation are present in the theory, then the CP invariance of the Higgs potential can be maximally broken beyond the Born approximation, and the high degree of mass degeneracy between H and A may be lifted through a sizeable HA mixing. After taking the CP-odd tadpole renormalization of the A boson into account, we find that the small mass difference M_H - M_A, which is about 1% of the A-boson mass at the tree level, can be substantially enhanced to the 25% level at the one-loop order. We also find that the loop-induced mixing between the lightest CP-even Higgs boson h and the A boson may be of comparable size to M_h. We briefly discuss the main phenomenological implications of the predicted hA and HA mixings for the general Higgs-boson mass spectrum and for CP-violating observables at collider and lower energies.

Gauge- and Renormalization-Group- Invariant Formulation of the Higgs-Boson Resonance

A gauge- and renormalization-group- invariant approach implemented by the pinch technique is formulated for resonant transitions involving the Higgs boson. The lineshape of the Higgs boson is shown to consist of two distinct and physically meaningful contributions: a process-independent resonant part and a process-dependent non-resonant background, which are separately gauge independent, invariant under the renormalization group, satisfy naive, tree-level Ward identities, and respect the optical and equivalence theorem individually. The former process-independent quantity serves as the natural extension of the concept of the effective charge to the case of the Higgs scalar, and constitutes a common ingredient of every Born-improved amplitude. The difference in the phenomenological predictions obtained within our approach and those found with other methods is briefly discussed.

Gauge-Invariant Resummation Formalism for Two-Point Correlation Functions

The consistent description of unstable particles, renormalons, or other Schwinger--Dyson-type of solutions within the framework of perturbative gauge field theories necessitates the definition and resummation of off-shell Green's functions, which must respect several crucial physical requirements. A formalism is presented for resummation of off-shell two-point correlation functions, which is mainly based on arguments of analyticity, unitarity, gauge invariance and renormalizability. The analytic results obtained with various methods, including the background field gauges and the pinch technique are confronted with the physical requirements imposed; to one-loop order the pinch technique approach satisfies all of them. Using renormalization group arguments, we discuss issues of uniqueness of the resummation procedure related to the latter method.

A Gauge-Independent Approach to Resonant Transition Amplitudes

We present a new gauge-independent approach to resonant transition amplitudes with nonconserved external currents, based on the pinch technique method. In the context of $2\to 2$ and $2\to 3$ scattering processes, we show explicitly that the analytic results derived respect $U(1)_{em}$ gauge symmetry and do not depend on the choice of the $SU(2)_L$ gauge fixing. Our analytic approach treats, on equal footing, fermionic as well as bosonic contributions to the resummed gauge boson propagators, does not contain any residual space-like threshold terms, shows the correct high-energy unitarity behaviour, admits renormalization, and satisfies a number of other required properties, including the optical theorem. It is shown that nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays $Z\to l\bar{l}$, and universality of lepton asymmetries at the $Z$ peak form a set of complementary observables, yielding severe constraints on the parameter space of these theories. Contributions of new-physics effects to $R_b=Γ(Z\to b\bar{b})/Γ(Z\to \mbox{hadrons})$ are found to give interesting mass relations for the flavour-changing Higgs scalars present in these models.

SEMILEPTONIC LEPTON-NUMBER/FLAVOUR-VIOLATING tau DECAYS IN MAJORANA NEUTRINO MODELS

Motivated by the recent investigation of neutrinoless $τ$-lepton decays by the CLEO collaboration, we perform a systematic analysis of such decays in a possible new-physics scenario with heavy Dirac/Majorana neutrinos, including heavy-neutrino nondecoupling effects, finite quark masses, and quark as well as meson mixings. We find that $τ$-lepton decays into an electron or muon and a pseudoscalar or vector meson can have branching ratios close to the experimental sensitivity. Numerical estimates show that the predominant decay modes of this kind are $τ^-\to e^-ϕ$, $τ^-\to e^-ρ^0$, and $τ^-\to e^-π^0$, with branching ratios of order $10^{-6}$.

SLC/LEP CONSTRAINTS ON UNIFIED MODELS

We examine the potential of constraining possible nondecoupling effects of heavy neutrinos and Higgs bosons at LEP and SLC that may show up in the nonoblique part of the $Zl_il_j$ couplings. We analyze this type of new-physics interactions within the context of low-energy scenarios motivated by unified theories, such as the Standard Model (SM) with neutral isosinglets, the left-right symmetric model, and the minimal supersymmetric SM. Our analysis comprises a complete set of physical quantities based on the nonobservation of flavour-violating $Z$-boson decays, lepton universality in the decays $Z\to l\bar{l}$, and universality of lepton asymmetries at the $Z$ peak. It is found that these quantities form a set of complementary observables and may hence constrain the parameter space of the theories. Non-SM contributions of new-physics interactions to $R_b=Γ(Z\to b\bar{b})/Γ(Z\to \mbox{hadrons})$ are briefly discussed within these models.

Heavy-Neutrino Effects on tau-Lepton Decays

Minimal extensions of the Standard Model that are motivated by grand unified theories or superstring models with an E_6 symmetry can naturally predict heavy neutrinos of Dirac or Majorana nature. Such heavy neutral leptons violate the de- coupling theorem at the one-loop electroweak order and hence offer a unique chance for possible lepton-flavour decays of the tau lepton, e.g. tau -> eee or tau -> mu mu mu, to be seen in LEP experiments. We analyze such decays in models with three and four generations.
