Lyapunov exponent in the Vicsek model

The well-known Vicsek model describes the dynamics of a flock of self-propelled particles (SPPs). Surprisingly, there is no direct measure of the chaotic behavior of such systems. Here, we discuss the dynamical phase transition present in Vicsek systems in light of the largest Lyapunov exponent (LLE), which is numerically computed by following the dynamical evolution in tangent space for up to two million SPPs. As discontinuities in the neighbor weighting factor hinder the computations, we propose a smooth form of the Vicsek model. We find a chaotic regime for the collective behavior of the SPPs based on the LLE. The dependence of LLE with the applied noise, used as a control parameter, changes sensibly in the vicinity of the well-known transition points of the Vicsek model.

The intermediate type-I superconductors in the mesoscopic scale

M. Tinkham and P. G. de Gennes, described in their books the existence of an intermediate type-I superconductor as a consequence of an external surface that affects the well known classification of superconductors into type-I and II. Here we consider the mesoscopic superconductor where the ratio volume to area is small and the effects of the external surface are enhanced. By means of the standard Ginzburg-Landau theory the Tinkham-de Gennes scenario is extended to the mesoscopic type-I superconductor. We find new features of the transition at the passage from the genuine to the intermediate type-I. The latter has two distinct transitions, namely, from a paramagnetic to diamagnetic response in descending field and a quasi type-II behavior as the critical coupling is approached in ascending field. The intermediate type-I phase proposed here, and its corresponding transitions, reflect intrinsic features of the superconductor and not its geometrical properties.

Paramagnetic excited vortex states in superconductors

We consider excited vortex states, which are vortex states left inside a superconductor once the external applied magnetic field is switched off and whose energy is lower than of the normal state. We show that this state is paramagnetic and develop here a general method to obtain its Gibbs free energy through conformal mapping. The solution for any number of vortices in any cross section geometry can be read off from the Schwarz - Christoffel mapping. The method is based on the first order equations used by A. Abrikosov to discover vortices.

The ground states of the two-component order parameter superconductor

We show that in presence of an applied external field the two-component order parameter superconductor falls in two categories of ground states, namely, in the traditional Abrikosov ground state or in a new ground state fitted to describe a superconducting layer with texture, that is, patched regions separated by a phase difference of $π$. The existence of these two kinds of ground states follows from the sole assumption that the total supercurrent is the sum of the two individual supercurrents and is independent of any consideration about the free energy expansion. Uniquely defined relations between the current density and the superfluid density hold for these two ground states, which also determine the magnetization in terms of average values of the order parameters. Because these ground state conditions are also Bogomolny equations we construct the free energy for the two-component superconductor which admits the Bogomolny solution at a special coupling value.

Vortex patterns in a superconducting-ferromagnetic rod

A superconducting rod with a magnetic moment on top develops vortices obtained here through 3D calculations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. The inhomogeneity of the applied field brings new properties to the vortex patterns that vary according to the rod thickness. We find that for thin rods (disks) the vortex patterns are similar to those obtained in presence of a homogeneous magnetic field instead because they consist of giant vortex states. For thick rods novel patterns are obtained as vortices are curve lines in space that exit through the lateral surface.

Three-dimensional Ginzburg-Landau simulation of a vortex line displaced by a zigzag of pinning spheres

A vortex line is shaped by a zigzag of pinning centers and we study here how far the stretched vortex line is able to follow this path. The pinning center is described by an insulating sphere of coherence length size such that in its surface the de Gennes boundary condition applies. We calculate the free energy density of this system in the framework of the Ginzburg-Landau theory and study the critical displacement beyond which the vortex line is detached from the pinning center.
