RECIPE: Procedural Planning via Grounding in Instructional Video

Visual planning asks a model to generate the remaining steps of a procedure in natural language given a partial video context and a goal. Progress on this task is bottlenecked by annotation: clean labeled datasets are small, domain-narrow, and encode a single execution trajectory per example, even though many valid orderings exist. Large-scale instructional video corpora offer orders of magnitude more procedural content, but supervised fine-tuning on pseudo-labels from their noisy ASR narrations propagates segmentation and alignment errors and stays single-trajectory. We identify a key asymmetry: extracting clean step labels from noisy video is hard, but verifying whether a generated step sequence is temporally grounded in ASR transcripts is cheap and scales to millions of videos via precomputed text embeddings. We exploit this asymmetry in RECIPE, which uses grounding quality as a reward for GRPO, turning the noisy corpus into a verifier rather than a label source. The framework applies uniformly to two planner input configurations (Socratic, with a textual history extracted by a frozen VLM, and Video, consuming video tokens directly) and to annotated and weakly supervised regimes. We evaluate on 7 procedural benchmarks using a reference-based LLM-as-judge protocol scoring plans across 6 procedural criteria. RECIPE-RL improves over the base checkpoint at all scales (0.5B, 3B, 7B) and every benchmark, with macro-accuracy gains of +7 to +8 points in-domain and up to +16 points zero-shot. It outperforms supervised fine-tuning on both annotated and pseudo-labeled plans (the latter degrades the base) and remains robust without human annotations. Used as the proposal stage of a prior propose-assess-search planner, it improves over the strongest zero-shot baseline at every horizon on Visual Planning for Assistance, and on COIN it preserves the generation diversity that SFT collapses.

TI-PREGO: Chain of Thought and In-Context Learning for Online Mistake Detection in PRocedural EGOcentric Videos

Identifying procedural errors online from egocentric videos is a critical yet challenging task across various domains, including manufacturing, healthcare, and skill-based training. The nature of such mistakes is inherently open-set, as unforeseen or novel errors may occur, necessitating robust detection systems that do not rely on prior examples of failure. Currently, however, no technique effectively detects open-set procedural mistakes online. We propose a dual branch architecture to address this problem in an online fashion: one branch continuously performs step recognition from the input egocentric video, while the other anticipates future steps based on the recognition module's output. Mistakes are detected as mismatches between the currently recognized action and the action predicted by the anticipation module. The recognition branch takes input frames, predicts the current action, and aggregates frame-level results into action tokens. The anticipation branch, specifically, leverages the solid pattern-matching capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) to predict action tokens based on previously predicted ones. Given the online nature of the task, we also thoroughly benchmark the difficulties associated with per-frame evaluations, particularly the need for accurate and timely predictions in dynamic online scenarios. Extensive experiments on two procedural datasets demonstrate the challenges and opportunities of leveraging a dual-branch architecture for mistake detection, showcasing the effectiveness of our proposed approach. In a thorough evaluation including recognition and anticipation variants and state-of-the-art models, our method reveals its robustness and effectiveness in online applications.

Ego4D: Around the World in 3,000 Hours of Egocentric Video

We introduce Ego4D, a massive-scale egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite. It offers 3,670 hours of daily-life activity video spanning hundreds of scenarios (household, outdoor, workplace, leisure, etc.) captured by 931 unique camera wearers from 74 worldwide locations and 9 different countries. The approach to collection is designed to uphold rigorous privacy and ethics standards with consenting participants and robust de-identification procedures where relevant. Ego4D dramatically expands the volume of diverse egocentric video footage publicly available to the research community. Portions of the video are accompanied by audio, 3D meshes of the environment, eye gaze, stereo, and/or synchronized videos from multiple egocentric cameras at the same event. Furthermore, we present a host of new benchmark challenges centered around understanding the first-person visual experience in the past (querying an episodic memory), present (analyzing hand-object manipulation, audio-visual conversation, and social interactions), and future (forecasting activities). Egocentric Human-Object Interaction Detection Exploiting Synthetic Data

We consider the problem of detecting Egocentric HumanObject Interactions (EHOIs) in industrial contexts. Since collecting and labeling large amounts of real images is challenging, we propose a pipeline and a tool to generate photo-realistic synthetic First Person Vision (FPV) images automatically labeled for EHOI detection in a specific industrial scenario. To tackle the problem of EHOI detection, we propose a method that detects the hands, the objects in the scene, and determines which objects are currently involved in an interaction. We compare the performance of our method with a set of state-of-the-art baselines. Results show that using a synthetic dataset improves the performance of an EHOI detection system, especially when few real data are available. Panoptic Segmentation using Synthetic and Real Data

Being able to understand the relations between the user and the surrounding environment is instrumental to assist users in a worksite. For instance, understanding which objects a user is interacting with from images and video collected through a wearable device can be useful to inform the worker on the usage of specific objects in order to improve productivity and prevent accidents. Despite modern vision systems can rely on advanced algorithms for object detection, semantic and panoptic segmentation, these methods still require large quantities of domain-specific labeled data, which can be difficult to obtain in industrial scenarios. Motivated by this observation, we propose a pipeline which allows to generate synthetic images from 3D models of real environments and real objects. The generated images are automatically labeled and hence effortless to obtain. Exploiting the proposed pipeline, we generate a dataset comprising synthetic images automatically labeled for panoptic segmentation. This set is complemented by a small number of manually labeled real images for fine-tuning. Experiments show that the use of synthetic images allows to drastically reduce the number of real images needed to obtain reasonable panoptic segmentation performance.

Towards Streaming Egocentric Action Anticipation

Egocentric action anticipation is the task of predicting the future actions a camera wearer will likely perform based on past video observations. While in a real-world system it is fundamental to output such predictions before the action begins, past works have not generally paid attention to model runtime during evaluation. Indeed, current evaluation schemes assume that predictions can be made offline, and hence that computational resources are not limited. In contrast, in this paper, we propose a "streaming" egocentric action anticipation evaluation protocol which explicitly considers model runtime for performance assessment, assuming that predictions will be available only after the current video segment is processed, which depends on the processing time of a method. Following the proposed evaluation scheme, we benchmark different state-of-the-art approaches for egocentric action anticipation on two popular datasets. Our analysis shows that models with a smaller runtime tend to outperform heavier models in the considered streaming scenario, thus changing the rankings generally observed in standard offline evaluations. Based on this observation, we propose a lightweight action anticipation model consisting in a simple feed-forward 3D CNN, which we propose to optimize using knowledge distillation techniques and a custom loss. The results show that the proposed approach outperforms prior art in the streaming scenario, also in combination with other lightweight models.

Untrimmed Action Anticipation

Egocentric action anticipation consists in predicting a future action the camera wearer will perform from egocentric video. While the task has recently attracted the attention of the research community, current approaches assume that the input videos are "trimmed", meaning that a short video sequence is sampled a fixed time before the beginning of the action. We argue that, despite the recent advances in the field, trimmed action anticipation has a limited applicability in real-world scenarios where it is important to deal with "untrimmed" video inputs and it cannot be assumed that the exact moment in which the action will begin is known at test time. To overcome such limitations, we propose an untrimmed action anticipation task, which, similarly to temporal action detection, assumes that the input video is untrimmed at test time, while still requiring predictions to be made before the actions actually take place. We design an evaluation procedure for methods designed to address this novel task, and compare several baselines on the EPIC-KITCHENS-100 dataset. Experiments show that the performance of current models designed for trimmed action anticipation is very limited and more research on this task is required.

Weakly Supervised Attended Object Detection Using Gaze Data as Annotations

We consider the problem of detecting and recognizing the objects observed by visitors (i.e., attended objects) in cultural sites from egocentric vision. A standard approach to the problem involves detecting all objects and selecting the one which best overlaps with the gaze of the visitor, measured through a gaze tracker. Since labeling large amounts of data to train a standard object detector is expensive in terms of costs and time, we propose a weakly supervised version of the task which leans only on gaze data and a frame-level label indicating the class of the attended object. To study the problem, we present a new dataset composed of egocentric videos and gaze coordinates of subjects visiting a museum. We hence compare three different baselines for weakly supervised attended object detection on the collected data. Results show that the considered approaches achieve satisfactory performance in a weakly supervised manner, which allows for significant time savings with respect to a fully supervised detector based on Faster R-CNN. Is First Person Vision Challenging for Object Tracking?

Understanding human-object interactions is fundamental in First Person Vision (FPV). Tracking algorithms which follow the objects manipulated by the camera wearer can provide useful cues to effectively model such interactions. Visual tracking solutions available in the computer vision literature have significantly improved their performance in the last years for a large variety of target objects and tracking scenarios. However, despite a few previous attempts to exploit trackers in FPV applications, a methodical analysis of the performance of state-of-the-art trackers in this domain is still missing. In this paper, we fill the gap by presenting the first systematic study of object tracking in FPV. Our study extensively analyses the performance of recent visual trackers and baseline FPV trackers with respect to different aspects and considering a new performance measure. This is achieved through TREK-150, a novel benchmark dataset composed of 150 densely annotated video sequences. Our results show that object tracking in FPV is challenging, which suggests that more research efforts should be devoted to this problem so that tracking could benefit FPV tasks.

EGO-CH: Dataset and Fundamental Tasks for Visitors BehavioralUnderstanding using Egocentric Vision

Equipping visitors of a cultural site with a wearable device allows to easily collect information about their preferences which can be exploited to improve the fruition of cultural goods with augmented reality. Moreover, egocentric video can be processed using computer vision and machine learning to enable an automated analysis of visitors' behavior. The inferred information can be used both online to assist the visitor and offline to support the manager of the site. Despite the positive impact such technologies can have in cultural heritage, the topic is currently understudied due to the limited number of public datasets suitable to study the considered problems. To address this issue, in this paper we propose EGOcentric-Cultural Heritage (EGO-CH), the first dataset of egocentric videos for visitors' behavior understanding in cultural sites. The dataset has been collected in two cultural sites and includes more than $27$ hours of video acquired by $70$ subjects, with labels for $26$ environments and over $200$ different Points of Interest. A large subset of the dataset, consisting of $60$ videos, is associated with surveys filled out by real visitors. To encourage research on the topic, we propose $4$ challenging tasks (room-based localization, point of interest/object recognition, object retrieval and survey prediction) useful to understand visitors' behavior and report baseline results on the dataset.

Rolling-Unrolling LSTMs for Action Anticipation from First-Person Video

In this paper, we tackle the problem of egocentric action anticipation, i.e., predicting what actions the camera wearer will perform in the near future and which objects they will interact with. Specifically, we contribute Rolling-Unrolling LSTM, a learning architecture to anticipate actions from egocentric videos. The method is based on three components: 1) an architecture comprised of two LSTMs to model the sub-tasks of summarizing the past and inferring the future, 2) a Sequence Completion Pre-Training technique which encourages the LSTMs to focus on the different sub-tasks, and 3) a Modality ATTention (MATT) mechanism to efficiently fuse multi-modal predictions performed by processing RGB frames, optical flow fields and object-based features. The proposed approach is validated on EPIC-Kitchens, EGTEA Gaze+ and ActivityNet. The experiments show that the proposed architecture is state-of-the-art in the domain of egocentric videos, achieving top performances in the 2019 EPIC-Kitchens egocentric action anticipation challenge. The approach also achieves competitive performance on ActivityNet with respect to methods not based on unsupervised pre-training and generalizes to the tasks of early action recognition and action recognition. SceneAdapt: Scene-based domain adaptation for semantic segmentation using adversarial learning

Semantic segmentation methods have achieved outstanding performance thanks to deep learning. Nevertheless, when such algorithms are deployed to new contexts not seen during training, it is necessary to collect and label scene-specific data in order to adapt them to the new domain using fine-tuning. This process is required whenever an already installed camera is moved or a new camera is introduced in a camera network due to the different scene layouts induced by the different viewpoints. To limit the amount of additional training data to be collected, it would be ideal to train a semantic segmentation method using labeled data already available and only unlabeled data coming from the new camera. We formalize this problem as a domain adaptation task and introduce a novel dataset of urban scenes with the related semantic labels. As a first approach to address this challenging task, we propose SceneAdapt, a method for scene adaptation of semantic segmentation algorithms based on adversarial learning. Experiments and comparisons with state-of-the-art approaches to domain adaptation highlight that promising performance can be achieved using adversarial learning both when the two scenes have different but points of view, and when they comprise images of completely different scenes. The EPIC-KITCHENS Dataset: Collection, Challenges and Baselines

Since its introduction in 2018, EPIC-KITCHENS has attracted attention as the largest egocentric video benchmark, offering a unique viewpoint on people's interaction with objects, their attention, and even intention. In this paper, we detail how this large-scale dataset was captured by 32 participants in their native kitchen environments, and densely annotated with actions and object interactions. Our videos depict nonscripted daily activities, as recording is started every time a participant entered their kitchen. Recording took place in 4 countries by participants belonging to 10 different nationalities, resulting in highly diverse kitchen habits and cooking styles. Our dataset features 55 hours of video consisting of 11.5M frames, which we densely labelled for a total of 39.6K action segments and 454.2K object bounding boxes. Our annotation is unique in that we had the participants narrate their own videos after recording, thus reflecting true intention, and we crowd-sourced ground-truths based on these. We describe our object, action and. anticipation challenges, and evaluate several baselines over two test splits, seen and unseen kitchens. We introduce new baselines that highlight the multimodal nature of the dataset and the importance of explicit temporal modelling to discriminate fine-grained actions e.g. 'closing a tap' from 'opening' it up.
