Thermal Transport in Superconductors with coexisting Spin Density Wave Order

We study thermal transport in a two-dimensional system with coexisting $s$- or $d$-wave Superconducting (SC) and Spin Density Wave (SDW) orders. We analyse the nature of coexistence phase in a tight-binding square lattice with $\mathbf{Q}=(π,π)$ SDW ordering. The electronic thermal conductivity is computed within the framework of the Boltzmann kinetic theory, using Born approximation for the impurity scattering collision integral. We describe the influence of the Fermi surface (FS) topology, the competition between the SC and SDW order parameters, the presence or absence of zero energy excitations in the coexistence phase, on the low temperature behavior of thermal conductivity of the various paring states. We present qualitative analytical, and fully numerical results that show that the heat transport signatures of various SC states emerging from collinear SDW order are quite distinct, and depend on the symmetry properties of the SC order parameter under translation by the SDW nesting vector $\mathbf{Q}$. {A combination of $(π,π)$-SDW and the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing state results in fully gapped excitations, whereas $(π,π)$-SDW co-existing with either $d_{xy}$ or $s$-wave pairing states may always have gapless excitations. There appear special stable Dirac nodal points that are not gapped by the SC order in the coexistence phase, resulting in finite residual heat conductivity.

Bound collective modes in nonuniform superconductors

We study dynamics of a superconducting condensate in the presence of a domain wall defect in the order parameter. We find that broken translation and reflection symmetries result in new collective excitations, bound to the domain wall region. Two additional amplitude/Higgs modes lie below the bulk pairbreaking edge $2Δ$; one of them is a Goldstone mode with vanishing excitation energy. Spectrum of bound collective modes is related to the topological structure and stability of the domain wall. The `unbound' bulk collective modes and transverse gauge field mostly propagate across the domain wall, but the longitudinal component of the gauge field is completely reflected. Softening of the amplitude mode suggests reduced damping and possible route to its detection in geometrically confined superfluids or in superconductor-ferromagnetic heterostructures.

Heat transport in nonuniform superconductors

We calculate electronic energy transport in inhomogeneous superconductors using a fully self-consistent non-equilibrium quasiclassical Keldysh approach. We develop a general theory and apply it a superconductor with an order parameter that forms domain walls, of the type encountered in Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state. The heat transport in the presence of a domain wall is inherently anisotropic and non-local. Bound states in the nonuniform region play a crucial role and control heat transport in several ways: (i) they modify the spectrum of quasiparticle states and result in Andreev reflection processes, and (ii) they hybridize with impurity band and produce local transport environment with properties very different from those in uniform superconductor. As a result of this interplay, heat transport becomes highly sensitive to temperature, magnetic field and disorder. For strongly scattering impurities we find that the transport across domain walls at low temperatures is considerably more efficient than in the uniform superconducting state.

Role of Fermi surface anisotropy in the study of gap anisotropy using magnetic-field-angle dependence of thermal oscillations in AyFe2-xSe2 superconductors

We present a numerical study of the field-angle resolved oscillations of the thermal conductivity and specific heat under rotated magnetic field in the $A_y$Fe$_{2-x}$Se$_2$ [$A$=K,Rb,Cs,(Tl,K)] superconductors, using realistic two-band Fermi surface parameterization. Our key finding is that even for isotropic pairing on an anisotropic Fermi surface, the thermodynamic quantities exhibit substantial oscillatory behavior in the superconducting state, even much below the upper critical field. Furthermore, in multiband systems the competition of anisotropies between two Fermi surfaces can cause a double sign reversal of oscillations as a function of temperature, irrespective of gap anisotropy. Our findings put severe constraints on simple interpretations of field-angle resolved measurements widely used to identify the angular structure of the superconducting gap.

Pauli-Limited Superconductivity with Classical Magnetic Fluctuations

We examine the effect of classical magnetic fluctuations on the phase diagram of paramagneticallylimited two-dimensional superconductors under a Zeeman magnetic field. We derive the free energy expansion in powers of the superconducting order parameter and analyze the character of the normalsuperconducting transition. While the transition is of the second order for all temperatures in the absence of magnetic fluctuations, we find that proximity to magnetism drives both the transition into the uniform state and that into the modulated (Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov, FFLO) state to first order at intermediate temperatures. We compute the thermodynamic signatures of the normal-superconducting transition along the upper critical field.

Fermi-liquid effects in the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state of two-dimensional d-wave superconductors

We study the effects of Fermi-liquid interactions on quasi-two-dimensional d-wave superconductors in a magnetic field. The phase diagram of the superconducting state, including the periodic Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in high magnetic fields, is discussed for different strengths of quasiparticle many-body interactions within Landau's theory of Fermi liquids. Decreasing the Fermi-liquid parameter $F_0^a$ causes the magnetic spin susceptibility to increase, which in turn leads to a reduction of the FFLO phase. It is shown that a negative $F_0^a$ results in a first-order phase transition from the normal to the uniform superconducting state in a finite temperature interval. Finally, we discuss the thermodynamic implications of a first-order phase transition for CeCoIn$_5$.

Knight Shift in the FFLO State of a Two-Dimensional D-Wave Superconductor

We report on the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in two-dimensional d-wave superconductors with magnetic field parallel to the superconducting planes. This state occurs at high magnetic field near the Pauli-Clogston limit and is a consequence of the competition between the pair condensation and Zeeman energy. We use the quasiclassical theory to self-consistently compute the spatially nonuniform order parameter. Our self-consistent calculations show that the FFLO state of a d-wave order parameter breaks translational symmetry along preferred directions. The orientation of the nodes in real space is pinned by the nodes of the basis function in momentum space. Here, we present results for the Knight shift and discuss the implications for recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements on CeCoIn5.
