Magnetism and Magnetotransport in the Kagome Antiferromagnet $\text{Mn}_3\text{Ge}$

We perform classical Monte Carlo and stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert simulations to study temperature dependent magnetism of Kagome antiferromagnet (AFM) Weyl metal $\text{Mn}_3\text{Ge}$ and find that a long range chiral order sets in at a transition temperature well below the N{é}el temperature ($T_N$). Based on the crystalline symmetries, imposed by the chiral magnetic order, we argue for the presence of multiple iso-energetic Weyl nodes (nodes that are at same energy and with congruent Fermi surface around them) near chemical potential. Using the semi-classical Boltzmann equations, we show that the combined contribution to the net longitudinal magnetoconductance (LMC) and the planar Hall conductance (PHC) from tilted Weyl nodes can lead to signatures, qualitatively distinct from that of a single pair of Weyl nodes. In particular, we show that magnetic orders with different chiralities can give rise to different periods in LMC and PHC as a function of the in-plane magnetic field direction. This is ultimately related to differences in the symmetry-imposed constraints on the Weyl nodes.

Twisted bilayers of thin film magnetic topological insulators

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near "magic angles" has emerged as a rich platform for strongly correlated states of two-dimensional Dirac semimetals. Here we show that twisted bilayers of thin-film magnetic topological insulators (MTI) with large in-plane magnetization can realize flat bands near 2D Dirac nodes. Using a simple model for thin films of MTIs, we derive a continuum model for two such MTIs, twisted by a small angle with respect to each other. When the magnetization is in-plane, we show that interlayer tunneling terms act as effective $SU(2)$ vector potentials, which are known to lead to flat bands in TBG. We show that by changing the in-plane magnetization, it is possible to tune the twisted bilayer MTI band dispersion to quadratic band touching or to flat bands, similar to the TBG. If realized, this system can be a highly tunable platform for strongly correlated phases of two-dimensional Dirac semimetals.

Nonlinear Hall effect in Weyl semimetals induced by chiral anomaly

We predict a nonlinear Hall effect in certain Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry. When the energy dispersions about pairs of Weyl nodes are skewed -- the Weyl cones are "tilted" -- the concerted actions of the anomalous velocity and the chiral anomaly give rise to the nonlinear Hall effect. This Hall conductivity is linear in both electric and magnetic fields, and depends critically on the tilting of the Weyl cones. We also show that this effect does not rely on a finite Berry curvature dipole, in contrast to the intrinsic quantum nonlinear Hall effect that was recently observed in type-II Weyl semimetals.

Manipulating of magnetism in the topological semimetal EuCd2As2

Magnetic Weyl semimetals are expected to have extraordinary physical properties such as a chiral anomaly and large anomalous Hall effects that may be useful for future, potential, spintronics applications. However, in most known host materials, multiple pairs of Weyl points prevent a clear manifestation of the intrinsic topological effects. Our recent density functional theory (DFT) calculations study suggest that EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ can host Dirac fermions in an antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state or a single pair of Weyl fermions in a ferromagnetically (FM) ordered state. Unfortunately, previously synthesized crystals ordered antiferromagnetically with $T_{\textrm{N}}$\,$\simeq$\,9.5\,K. Here, we report the successful synthesis of single crystals of EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ that order ferromagnetically (FM) or antiferromagnetically (AFM) depending on the level of band filling, thus allowing for the use of magnetism to tune the topological properties within the same host. We explored their physical properties via magnetization, electrical transport, heat capacity, and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and conclude that EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is an excellent, tunable, system for exploring the interplay of magnetic ordering and topology.

Z_2 and Chiral Anomalies in Topological Dirac Semimetals

We demonstrate that topological Dirac semimetals, which possess two Dirac nodes, separated in momentum space along a rotation axis and protected by rotational symmetry, exhibit an additional quantum anomaly, distinct from the chiral anomaly. This anomaly, which we call the $ \mathbb Z_2$ anomaly, is a consequence of the fact that the Dirac nodes in topological Dirac semimetals carry a $\mathbb Z_2$ topological charge. The $\mathbb Z_2$ anomaly refers to nonconservation of this charge in the presence of external fields due to quantum effects and has observable consequences due to its interplay with the chiral anomaly. We discuss possible implications of this for the interpretation of magnetotransport experiments on topological Dirac semimetals. We also provide a possible explanation for the magnetic field dependent angular narrowing of the negative longitudinal magnetoresistance, observed in a recent experiment on Na$_3$Bi.

Pair density wave instability and Cooper pair insulators in gapped fermion systems

By analyzing simple models of fermions in lattice potentials we argue that the zero-temperature pairing instability of any ideal band-insulator occurs at a finite momentum. The resulting supersolid state is known as "pair density wave". The pairing momentum at the onset of instability is generally incommensurate as a result of phase-space restrictions and relative strengths of interband and intraband pairing. However, commensurate pairing occurs in the strong-coupling limit and becomes a Cooper-channel analogue of the Halperin-Rice exciton condensation instability in indirect bandgap semiconductors. The exceptional sensitivity of incommensurate pairing to quantum fluctuations can lead to a strongly-correlated insulating regime and a non-BCS transition, even in the case of weak coupling as shown by an exact renormalization group analysis.

Superfluid and supersolid phases of lattice bosons with ring-exchange interaction

We examine the superfluid phase of a hard-core boson model with nearest-neighbor exchange J and four-particle ring-exchange K at half-filling on the square lattice. At zero temperature we find that the superfluid in the pure-J model is quickly destroyed by the inclusion of negative-K ring-exchange interactions, favoring a state with a (pi,pi) ordering wavevector. Minimization of the mean-field energy suggests that a supersolid state with coexisting superfluidity, charge-density wave, and valence-bond-like order is formed. We also study the behavior of the finite-T Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in the superfluid phase, by forcing the Nelson-Kosterlitz universal jump condition on the finite-T spin wave superfluid density. Away from the pure J point, T_{KT} decreases rapidly for negative K, while for positive K, T_{KT} reaches a maximum at some K \neq 0 in agreement with recent quantum Monte Carlo simulations.
