Burnside rings and volume forms with logarithmic poles

We develop a theory of Burnside rings in the context of birational equivalences of algebraic varieties equipped with logarithmic volume forms. We introduce a residue homomorphism and construct an additive invariant of birational morphisms. We also define a specialization homomorphism.

This text is devoted to the following result, stemming out works of Bombieri, Masser, Zannier, and Maurin: Let $X$ be an complex algebraic (projective, connected) curve and let us consider $n$ rational functions $f_1,...,f_n$ on $X$ which are multiplicatively independent. The points $x$ of $X$ where their values $f_1(x),...,f_n(x)$ satisfy at least two independent multiplicative dependence relations form a finite set. We discuss the conjectural generalizations of this theorem (Bombieri, Masser, Zannier; Zilber; Pink) concerning the finiteness of points of a $d$-dimensional subvariety $X$ of a semiabelian variety $G$ which belong to an algebraic subgroup of codimension $>d$ of $G$, their relations with theorems of Mordell-Lang or Manin-Mumford type, and, in the arithmetic case, recent results in this direction (Habegger; Rémond; Viada).

Let X be a projective integral normal scheme over a number field F; let L be a ample line bundle on X together with a semi-positive adelic metric in the sense of Zhang. The main results of this article are 1) A formula which computes the height (relative to L) of a Cartier divisor D on X as generalized "Mahler measures", i.e. by integrating Green functions for D against measures attached to L. 2) a theorem of equidistribution of points of "small" height valid for functions with logarithmic singularities along a divisor D, provided the height of D is "minimal". In the context of algebraic dynamics, "small" means of height converging to 0, and "minimal" means height 0.

The number of solutions in finite fields of a system of polynomial equations obeys a very strong regularity, reflected for example by the rationality of the zeta function of an algebraic variety defined over a finite field, or the modularity of Hasse-Weil's $L$-function of an elliptic curve over $\Q$. Since two decades, efficient methods have been invented to compute effectively this number of solutions, notably in view of cryptographic applications. This exposé presents some of these methods, generally relying on the use of Lefshetz's trace formula in an adequate cohomology theory and discusses their respective advantages.

The proof by Ullmo and Zhang of Bogomolov's conjecture about points of small height in abelian varieties made a crucial use of an equidistribution property for ``small points'' in the associated complex abelian variety. We study the analogous equidistribution property at $p$-adic places. Our results can be conveniently stated within the framework of the analytic spaces defined by Berkovich. The first one is valid in any dimension but is restricted to ``algebraic metrics'', the second one is valid for curves, but allows for more general metrics, in particular to the normalized heights with respect to dynamical systems.

In this talk, I report on three theorems concerning algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic $p>0$. a) over a finite field of cardinal $q$, two proper smooth varieties which are geometrically birational have the same number of rational points modulo $q$ (cf. Ekedahl, 1983). b) over a finite field of cardinal $q$, a proper smooth variety which is rationally chain connected, or Fano, or weakly unirational, has a number of rational points congruent to 1 modulo $q$ (Esnault, 2003). c) over an algebraic closed field of caracteristic $p>0$, the fundamental group of a proper smooth variety which is rationally chain connected, or Fano, or weakly unirational, is a finite group of order prime to $p$ (cf. Ekedahl, 1983). The common feature of the proofs is a control of the $p$-adic valuations of Frobenius and is best explained within the framework of Berthelot's rigid cohomology. I also explain its relevant properties.
