A Generic Microscopic Theory for the Universality of TTLS Model Meissner-Berret Ratio in Low-Temperature Glasses

Tunneling-two-level-system (TTLS) model has successfully explained several low-temperature glass universal properties which do not exist in their crystalline counterparts. The coupling constants between longitudinal and transverse phonon strain fields and two-level-systems are denoted as $γ_l$ and $γ_t$. The ratio $γ_l/γ_t$ was observed to lie between $1.44$ and $1.84$ for 18 different kinds of glasses. Such universal property cannot be explained within TTLS model. In this paper by developing a microscopic generic coupled block model, we show that the ratio $γ_l/γ_t$ is proportinal to the ratio of sound velocity $c_l/c_t$. We prove that the universality of $γ_l/γ_t$ essentially comes from the mutual interaction between different glass blocks, independent of the microscopic structure and chemical compound of the amorphous materials. In the appendix we also give a detailed correction on the coefficient of non-elastic stress-stress interaction $Λ_{ijkl}^{(ss')}$ which was obtained by Joffrin and Levelut\cite{Joffrin1976}.

A strict experimental test of macroscopic realism in a superconducting flux qubit

Macroscopic realism is the name for a class of modifications to quantum theory that allow macroscopic objects to be described in a measurement-independent manner, while largely preserving a fully quantum mechanical description of the microscopic world. Objective collapse theories are examples which aim to solve the quantum measurement problem through modified dynamical laws. Whether such theories describe nature, however, is not known. Here we describe and implement an experimental protocol capable of constraining theories of this class, that is more noise tolerant and conceptually transparent than the original Leggett-Garg test. We implement the protocol in a superconducting flux qubit, and rule out (by ~84 s.d.) those theories which would deny coherent superpositions of 170 nA currents over a ~10 ns timescale. Further, we address the 'clumsiness loophole' by determining classical disturbance with control experiments. Our results constitute strong evidence for the superposition of states of nontrivial macroscopic distinctness.

Random Nonlinear Infinite-Level-System Model for Amorphous Solid Phonon Echo and Saturation Phenomena

The first two successful predictions for amorphous solid experiments by tunneling-two-level-system (TTLS) was phonon echo and saturation phenomena. In this paper by generalizing TTLS to infinite-level-system model with certain randomness and nonlinearity, we prove that phonon echo is a stimulated emission process. The classical infinite-level-system (taking $\hbar\to 0$ limit) cannot find saturation effect, while quantum infinite-level-system can find it with certain nonlinearity assumed. We also prove that without randomness or nonlinearity neither phonon echo nor saturation exists in arbitrary infinite-level-system.

The escape physics of single shot measurement of flux qubit with dcSQUID

In most experiments on flux qubits, the "measurement" is performed by coupling the system to a dc SQUID and recording the distribution of switching currents for the latter;this measurement protocol is very far from the classic von Neumann ("projective") scheme,in that very little information is obtained from a single run, rather one has to repeat the experiment tens of thosands of times to extract anything useful. Here, concentrating on the equlibrium behavior of the flux qubit,we carry out an analytic calculation of the dc-SQUID switching current distribution as a function of external bias flux on the qubit, and compare our predictions with the data from experiments conducted at Delft and NTT.

BEC-BCS Crossover with Feshbach Resonance for a Three-Hyperfine-Species Model

We consider the behavior of an ultracold Fermi gas across a narrow Feshbach resonance, where the occupation of the closed channel may not be negligible. While the corrections to the single-channel formulae associated with the nonzero chemical potential and with particle conservation have been considered in the existing literature, there is a further effect, namely the "inter-channel Pauli exclusion principle" associated with the fact that a single hyperfine species may be common to the two channels. We focus on this effect and show that, as intuitively expected, the resulting corrections are of order $E_F/η$, where $E_F$ is the Fermi energy of the gas in the absence of interactions and $η$ is the Zeeman energy difference between the two channels. We also consider the related corrections to the fermionic excitation spectrum, and briefly discuss the collective modes of the system.

Absence of spontaneous magnetic order of lattice spins coupled to itinerant interacting electrons in one and two dimensions

We extend the Mermin-Wagner theorem to a system of lattice spins which are spin-coupled to itinerant and interacting charge carriers. We use the Bogoliubov inequality to rigorously prove that neither (anti-) ferromagnetic nor helical long-range order is possible in one and two dimensions at any finite temperature. Our proof applies to a wide class of models including any form of electron-electron and single-electron interactions that are independent of spin. In the presence of Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions (SOI) magnetic order is allowed and intimately connected to equilibrium spin currents. However, in the special case when Rashba and Dresselhaus SOIs are tuned to be equal, magnetic order is excluded again. This opens up a new possibility to control magnetism in magnetic semiconductors electrically.

Universal Sound Absorption in Amorphous Solids: A Theory of Elastically Coupled Generic Blocks

Glasses are known to exhibit quantitative universalities at low temperatures, the most striking of which is the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient 1/Q. In this work we develop a theory of coupled generic blocks with a certain randomness property to show that universality emerges essentially due to the interactions between elastic blocks, regardless of their microscopic nature.

Spin polarization of half-quantum vortex in systems with equal spin pairing

We present a variational analysis for a half-quantum vortex (HQV) in the equal-spin-pairing superfluid state which, under suitable conditions, is believed to be realized in Sr2RuO4 and 3He-A. Our approach is based on a description of the HQV in terms of a BCS-like wave function with a spin-dependent boost. We predict a novel feature: the HQV, if stable, should be accompanied by a non-zero spin polarization. Such a spin polarization would exist in addition to the one induced by the Zeeman coupling to the external field and hence may serve as an indicator in experimental search for HQV.
