Complex Langevin simulations for $PT$-symmetric models

Self-interacting scalar quantum field theories possessing $PT$-symmetry are physically admissible since their energy spectrum is real and bounded below. However, models with $PT$-invariant potentials can have complex actions in general and a non-perturbative study of such systems using methods based on traditional Monte Carlo is hindered due to numerical sign problem. In this work we employ complex Langevin based on stochastic quantization to study two-dimensional scalar field theories, including the ones exhibiting $PT$-symmetry. We also study the simplest supersymmetric version of these systems and address the question on dynamical supersymmetry breaking.

Non-perturbative phase structure of the bosonic BMN matrix model

We study the bosonic part of the BMN matrix model for wide ranges of temperatures, values of the deformation parameter, and numbers of colors $16 \leq N \leq 48$. Using lattice computations, we analyze phase transitions in the model, observing a single first-order transition from a uniform to a gapped phase for all values of the deformation parameter. We study the functional form of the dependence of the critical temperature on the deformation parameter, to describe how our results smoothly interpolate between the limits of the bosonic BFSS model and the gauged Gaussian model.

Large-$N$ limit of two-dimensional Yang--Mills theory with four supercharges

We study the two-dimensional Yang--Mills theory with four supercharges in the large-$N$ limit. By using thermal boundary conditions, we analyze the internal energy and the distribution of scalars. We compare their behavior to the maximally supersymmetric case with sixteen supercharges, which is known to admit a holographic interpretation. Our lattice results for the scalar distribution show no visible dependence on $N$ and the energy at strong coupling appears independent of temperature.

Thermal phase structure of a supersymmetric matrix model

We present initial results from ongoing lattice investigations into the thermal phase structure of the Berenstein--Maldacena--Nastase deformation of maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills quantum mechanics. The phase diagram of the theory depends on both the temperature $T$ and the deformation parameter $μ$, through the dimensionless ratios $T / μ$ and $g \equiv λ/ μ^3$ with $λ$ the 't Hooft coupling. Considering couplings $g$ that span three orders of magnitude, we reproduce the weak-coupling perturbative prediction for the deconfinement $T / μ$ and approach recent large-$N$ dual supergravity analyses in the strong-coupling limit. We are carrying out calculations with lattice sizes up to $N_τ = 24$ and numbers of colors up to $N = 16$, to allow initial checks of the large-$N$ continuum limit.

Continuum limit of the leading order HQET form factor in $B_s \to K\ellν$ decays

We discuss the computation of form factors for semi-leptonic decays of $\rm B$-, $\rm B_s$- mesons in lattice QCD. Considering in particular the example of the static $\rm B_s$ form factors we demonstrate that after non-perturbative renormalization the continuum limit can be taken with confidence. The resulting precision is of interest for extractions of $V_{\rm ub}$. The size of the corrections of order $1/m_{\rm b}$ is just estimated at present but it is expected that their inclusion does not pose significant difficulties.

Iso-vector and Iso-scalar Tensor Charges of the Nucleon from Lattice QCD

We present results for the iso-vector and flavor diagonal tensor charges $g^{u-d}_T$, $g^{u}_T$, $g^{d}_T$, and $g^{s}_T$ needed to probe novel tensor interactions at the TeV scale in neutron and nuclear $β$-decays and the contribution of the quark electric dipole moment (EDM) to the neutron EDM. The lattice QCD calculations were done using nine ensembles of gauge configurations generated by the MILC collaboration using the HISQ action with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors. These ensembles span three lattice spacings $a \approx 0.06, 0.09$ and $0.12 $ fm and three quark masses corresponding to the pion masses $M_π\approx 130, 220$ and $310 $ MeV. Using estimates from these ensembles, we quantify all systematic uncertainties and perform a simultaneous extrapolation in the lattice spacing, volume and light quark masses for the connected contributions. The final estimates of the connected nucleon (proton) tensor charge for the iso-vector combination is $g_T^{u-d} = 1.020(76) $ in the $\bar{\text{MS}}$ scheme at $2$ GeV. The additional disconnected quark loop contributions needed for the flavor-diagonal matrix elements are calculated using a stochastic estimator employing the truncated solver method with the all-mode-averaging technique. We find that the size of the disconnected contribution is smaller than the statistical error in the connected contribution. This allows us to bound the disconnected contribution and include it as an additional uncertainty in the flavor-diagonal charges. After a continuum extrapolation, we find $g_T^{u} = 0.774(66) $, $g_T^{d} = -0.233(28) $ and $g_T^{u+d} = 0.541(67) $. The strangeness tensor charge, that can make a significant contribution to the neutron EDM due to the large ratio $m_s/m_{u,d}$, is $g_T^{s}=0.008(9)$ in the continuum limit.

Thermal phases of D1-branes on a circle from lattice super Yang-Mills

We report on the results of numerical simulations of 1+1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory with maximal supersymmetry at finite temperature and compactified on a circle. For large N this system is thought to provide a dual description of the decoupling limit of N coincident D1-branes on a circle. It has been proposed that at large N there is a phase transition at strong coupling related to the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) phase transition in the holographic gravity dual. In a high temperature limit there was argued to be a deconfinement transition associated to the spatial Polyakov loop, and it has been proposed that this is the continuation of the strong coupling GL transition. Investigating the theory on the lattice for SU(3) and SU(4) and studying the time and space Polyakov loops we find evidence supporting this. In particular at strong coupling we see the transition has the parametric dependence on coupling predicted by gravity. We estimate the GL phase transition temperature from the lattice data which, interestingly, is not yet known directly in the gravity dual. Fine tuning in the lattice theory is avoided by the use of a lattice action with exact supersymmetry.

Precision calculations of nucleon charges $g_A$, $g_S$, $g_T$

We present a detailed analysis of statistical and systematic errors in the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state. These analyses are being done on dynamical $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration using valence clover fermions. Using ensembles at three values of the lattice spacing ($a=0.12,\ 0.09,$ and $0.06$ fm) and three values of the quark mass ($M_π\approx 310,\ 220$ and $130$ MeV) we find that the estimates of the tensor charge are stable and it can be extracted with $5\%$ precision with O(10,000) measurements. We also find that higher statistics are needed to resolve the various uncertainties in the calculation of $g_A$ and improve the signal in $g_S$, which with present data has large errors. A brief status report on the mixing and renormalization of novel operators contributing to nEDM is also given.

Review of Lattice Supersymmetry and Gauge-Gravity Duality

We review the status of recent investigations on validating the gauge-gravity duality conjecture through numerical simulations of strongly coupled maximally supersymmetric thermal gauge theories. In the simplest setting, the gauge-gravity duality connects systems of D0-branes and black hole geometries at finite temperature to maximally supersymmetric gauged quantum mechanics at the same temperature. Recent simulations show that non-perturbative gauge theory results give excellent agreement with the quantum gravity predictions, thus proving strong evidence for the validity of the duality conjecture and more insight into quantum black holes and gravity.

Form factors for $\mathrm B_\mathrm s \to \mathrm K \ell ν$ decays in Lattice QCD

We present the current status of the computation of the form factor $f_+ (q^2)$ for the semi-leptonic decay $\mathrm B_\mathrm s \to \mathrm K \ell ν$ by the ALPHA collaboration. We use gauge configurations which were generated as part of the Coordinated Lattice Simulations (CLS) effort. They have $N_\mathrm f=2$ non-perturbatively $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions, and pion masses down to $\approx 250 \,\mathrm {MeV}$ with $m_πL \geq 4$. The heavy quark is treated in non-perturbative Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET). We discuss how to extract the form factors from the correlation functions and present first results for the form factor at $q^2 = 21.23\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$ extrapolated to the continuum. Next-to-leading order terms in HQET and the chiral extrapolation still need to be included in the analysis.

Lattice formulations of supersymmetric gauge theories with matter fields

Certain classes of supersymmetric gauge theories, including the well known N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, that takes part in the AdS/CFT correspondence, can be formulated on a Euclidean spacetime lattice using the techniques of exact lattice supersymmetry. Great ideas such as topological field theories, Dirac-Kaehler fermions, geometric discretization all come together to create supersymmetric lattice theories that are gauge-invariant, doubler free, local and exact supersymmetric. We discuss the recent lattice constructions of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in two and three dimensions coupled to matter fields in various representations of the color group.

Nucleon Charges and Electromagnetic Form Factors from 2+1+1-Flavor Lattice QCD

We present lattice-QCD results on the nucleon isovector axial, scalar and tensor charges, the isovector electromagnetic Dirac and Pauli form factors, and the connected parts of the isoscalar charges. The calculations have been done using two ensembles of HISQ lattices generated by the MILC Collaboration with 2+1+1 dynamical flavors at a lattice spacing of 0.12 fm and with light-quark masses corresponding to pions with masses 310 and 220 MeV. We perform a systematic study including excited-state degrees of freedom and examine the dependence of the extracted nucleon matrix elements on source-sink separation. This study demonstrates with high-statistics data that including excited-state contributions and generating data at multiple separations is necessary to remove contamination that would otherwise lead to systematic error. We also determine the renormalization constants of the associated quark bilinear operators in the RI-sMOM scheme and make comparisons of our renormalized results with previous dynamical-lattice calculations.

Probing TeV scale physics in precision UCN decays

We present the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state on dynamical $N_f=2+1+1$ HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration using valence clover fermions. These matrix elements are needed to probe novel scalar and tensor interactions in neutron beta-decay that can arise in extensions to the Standard Model at the TeV scale. Results are presented at one value of the lattice spacing, $a=0.12$ fm, and two values of light quarks corresponding to $M_π=310$ and $220$ MeV. We discuss two sources of systematic errors, contribution of excited states to these matrix elements and the renormalization constants, and the efficacy of methods used to control them.

Supersymmetric quiver gauge theories on the lattice

In this paper we detail the lattice constructions of several classes of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories in two and three Euclidean spacetime dimensions possessing exact supersymmetry at finite lattice spacing. Such constructions are obtained through the methods of topological twisting and geometric discretization of Euclidean Yang--Mills theories with eight and sixteen supercharges in two and three dimensions. We detail the lattice constructions of two-dimensional quiver gauge theories possessing four and eight supercharges and three-dimensional quiver gauge theories possessing eight supercharges.

Two-dimensional ${\cal N} = (2, 2)$ Lattice Gauge Theories with Matter in Higher Representations

We construct two-dimensional ${\cal N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric gauge theories on a Euclidean spacetime lattice with matter in the two-index symmetric and anti-symmetric representations of SU($N_c$) color group. These lattice theories preserve a subset of the supercharges exact at finite lattice spacing. The method of topological twisting is used to construct such theories in the continuum and then the geometric discretization scheme is used to formulate them on the lattice. The lattice theories obtained this way are gauge-invariant, free from fermion doubling problem and exact supersymmetric at finite lattice spacing. We hope that these lattice constructions further motivate the nonperturbative explorations of models inspired by technicolor, orbifolding and orientifolding in string theories and the Corrigan-Ramond limit.

Twisted supersymmetries in lattice ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory

Recently it has been shown how a topologically twisted version of ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills may be discretized in such a way as to preserve one scalar supersymmetry at nonzero lattice spacing. The remaining fifteen supersymmetries are broken by terms of ${\cal O}(a)$ where $a$ is the lattice spacing. One would like to know whether these remaining supersymmetries are regained in the continuum limit $a \to 0$ and, if not, how much tuning of the couplings in the lattice action is required. In this paper we derive the form of these additional twisted supersymmetries by combining a set of discrete R-symmetries of the continuum theory with the action of the scalar supersymmetry. We then argue that restoration of rotational symmetry in the continuum limit of the lattice theory likely implies restoration of R-symmetry and hence should lead to an automatic enhancement to the full ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry without further fine-tuning.

Investigating the sign problem for two-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(8,8)$ lattice super Yang--Mills theories

Recently there has been some controversy in the literature concerning the existence of a fermion sign problem in the $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theories on the lattice. In this work, we address this issue by conducting Monte Carlo simulations not only for $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ but also for $\mathcal{N}=(8,8)$ SYM in two dimensions for the U(N) theories with N=2, using the new ideas derived from topological twisting followed by geometric discretization. Our results from simulations provide the evidence that these theories do {\it not} suffer from a sign problem as the continuum limit is approached. These results thus boost confidence that these new lattice formulations can be used successfully to explore the nonperturbative aspects of the four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory.

Probing novel TeV physics through precision calculations of scalar and tensor charges of the nucleon

We present an update on the calculation of matrix elements of iso-vector scalar, axial and tensor charges between a neutron and a proton state. These matrix elements are needed to probe novel scalar and tensor interactions in neutron beta-decay that can arise in extensions of the Standard Model at the TeV scale. Our calculations are being done using valence clover fermions on dynamical N_f=2+1+1 HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration. We provide preliminary estimates of the dependence of these matrix elements on the light quark masses, lattice spacing, and the time separation between the source and sink of the nucleons. We also find that the renormalization constants calculated using the RI-sMOM scheme are close to unity for the HYP smeared HISQ lattices.

Probing TeV scale physics via ultra cold neutron decays and calculating non-standard baryon matrix elements

We motivate undertaking precision analyses of neutron decays to look for signatures of new scalar and tensor interactions that can arise in extensions of the Standard Model at the TeV scale. The key ingrediant needed to connect experimental data with theoretical analysis are high-precision calculations of matrix elements of isovector bilinear operators between the decaying neutron and final state proton. We describe the status of our Lattice QCD program of using valence clover fermions on dynamical N_f=2+1+1 HISQ configurations generated by the MILC Collaboration. On the theoretical side we use the effective field theory method and provide both model independent and dependent analyses to obtain bounds on possible scalar and tensor interactions, both from low energy experiments and LHC data.

Theoretical Bounds on New Four-Fermion Interactions and TeV Scale Physics

The standard model weak interactions can be described by four-fermion V-A operators at low energies. New physics at the TeV scale can, however, generate the other Lorentz structures. In this talk, we review the constraints on such interactions from nuclear and hadronic decays, as well as from collider searches. Currently the most stringent bounds come from the analysis of the 0+ to 0+ nuclear and the pi to e nu gamma radiative pion decays. In the near future, the ultracold neutron beta decay experiments and the direct LHC measurements will compete in setting the most stringent bounds, provided, however, that the neutron-to-proton non-perturbative transition matrix elements can be calculated to a level of 10-20% accuracy.

On the sign problem in 2D lattice super Yang--Mills

In recent years a new class of supersymmetric lattice theories have been proposed which retain one or more exact supersymmetries for non-zero lattice spacing. Recently there has been some controversy in the literature concerning whether these theories suffer from a sign problem. In this paper we address this issue by conducting simulations of the N=(2, 2) and N=(8, 8) supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories in two dimensions for the U(N) theories with N=2,3,4, using the new twisted lattice formulations. Our results provide evidence that these theories do not suffer from a sign problem in the continuum limit. These results thus boost confidence that the new lattice formulations can be used successfully to explore non-perturbative aspects of four-dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory.

Perturbative renormalization of lattice N=4 super Yang-Mills theory

We consider N=4 super Yang-Mills theory on a four-dimensional lattice. The lattice formulation under consideration retains one exact supersymmetry at non-zero lattice spacing. We show that this feature combined with gauge invariance and the large point group symmetry of the lattice theory ensures that the only counterterms that appear at any order in perturbation theory correspond to renormalizations of existing terms in the bare lattice action. In particular we find that no mass terms are generated at any finite order of perturbation theory. We calculate these renormalizations by examining the fermion and auxiliary boson self energies at one loop and find that they all exhibit a common logarithmic divergence which can be absorbed by a single wavefunction renormalization. This finding implies that at one loop only a fine tuning of the finite parts is required to regain full supersymmetry in the continuum limit.

Supersymmetric gauge theories on the lattice: Pfaffian phases and the Neuberger 0/0 problem

Recently a class of supersymmetric gauge theories have been successfully implemented on the lattice. However, there has been an ongoing debate on whether lattice versions of some of these theories suffer from a sign problem, with independent simulations for the ${\cal N} = (2, 2)$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories in two dimensions yielding seemingly contradictory results. Here, we address this issue from an interesting theoretical point of view. We conjecture that the sign problem observed in some of the simulations is related to the so called Neuberger 0/0 problem, which arises in ordinary non-supersymmetric lattice gauge theories, and prevents the realization of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin symmetry on the lattice. After discussing why we expect a sign problem in certain classes of supersymmetric lattice gauge theories far from the continuum limit, we argue that these problems can be evaded by use of a non-compact parametrization of the gauge link fields.

Supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories with exact supersymmetry on the lattice

Inspired by the ideas from topological field theory it is possible to rewrite the supersymmetric charges of certain classes of extended supersymmetric Yang--Mills (SYM) theories in such a way that they are compatible with the discretization on a Euclidean spacetime lattice. Such theories are known as maximally twisted SYM theories. In this review we discuss the construction and some applications of such classes of theories. The one-loop perturbative renormalization of the four-dimensional lattice ${\cal N}=4$ SYM is discussed in particular. The lattice theories constructed using twisted approach play an important role in investigating the thermal phases of strongly coupled SYM theories and also the thermodynamic properties of their dual gravitational theories.

Gauge theory duals of black hole - black string transitions of gravitational theories on a circle

We study the black hole - black string phase transitions of gravitational theories compactified on a circle using the holographic duality conjecture. The gauge theory duals of these theories are maximally supersymmetric and strongly coupled 1 + 1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theories compactified on a circle, in the large $N$ limit. We perform the strongly coupled finite temperature gauge theory calculations on a lattice, using the recently developed exact lattice supersymmetry methods based on topological twisting and orbifolding. The spatial Polyakov line serves as relevant order parameter of the confinement - deconfinement phase transitions in the gauge theory duals.

Non-Pauli Transitions From Spacetime Noncommutativity

There are good reasons to suspect that spacetime at Planck scales is noncommutative. Typically this noncommutativity is controlled by fixed "vectors" or "tensors" with numerical entries. For the Moyal spacetime, it is the antisymmetric matrix $θ_{μν}$. In approaches enforcing Poincaré invariance, these deform or twist the method of (anti-)symmetrization of identical particle state vectors. We argue that the earth's rotation and movements in the cosmos are "sudden" events to Pauli-forbidden processes. They induce (twisted) bosonic components in state vectors of identical spinorial particles in the presence of a twist. These components induce non-Pauli transitions. From known limits on such transitions, we infer that the energy scale for noncommutativity is $\gtrsim 10^{24}\textrm{TeV}$. This suggests a new energy scale beyond Planck scale.

Causality and statistics on the Groenewold-Moyal plane

Quantum theories constructed on the noncommutative spacetime called the Groenewold-Moyal plane exhibit many interesting properties such as Lorentz and CPT noninvariance, causality violation and twisted statistics. We show that such violations lead to many striking features that may be tested experimentally. These theories predict Pauli forbidden transitions due to twisted statistics, anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation due to correlations of observables in spacelike regions and Lorentz and CPT violations in scattering amplitudes.

Vortex Scattering and Intercommuting Cosmic Strings on a Noncommutative Spacetime

We study the scattering of noncommutative vortices, based on the noncommutative field theory developed in [Phys. Rev. D 75, 045009 (2007)], as a way to understand the interaction of cosmic strings. In the center-of-mass frame, the effects of noncommutativity vanish, and therefore the reconnection of cosmic strings occurs in an identical manner to the commutative case. However, when scattering occurs in a frame other than the center-of-mass frame, strings still reconnect but the well known 90-degree scattering no longer need correspond to the head on collision of the strings, due to the breakdown of Lorentz invariance in the underlying noncommutative field theory.
