Noncommutative coordinates for symplectic representations

We introduce coordinates on the spaces of framed and decorated representations of the fundamental group of a surface with nonempty boundary into the symplectic group $Sp(2n,\mathbf R)$. These coordinates provide a noncommutative generalization of the parametrizations of the spaces of representations into $SL(2,\mathbf R)$ or $PSL(2,\mathbf R)$ given by Thurston, Penner, Kashaev, and Fock-Goncharov. On the space of decorated symplectic representations the coordinates give a geometric realization of the noncommutative cluster-like structures introduced by Berenstein-Retakh. The locus of positive coordinates maps to the space of framed maximal representations. We use this to determine an explicit homeomorphism between the space of framed maximal representations and a quotient by the group $O(n)$. This allows us to describe the homotopy type and, when $n=2$, to give an exact description of the singularities. Along the way, we establish a complete classification of pairs of nondegenerate quadratic forms.

On order preserving representations

In this article we introduce order preserving representations of fundamental groups of surfaces into Lie groups with bi-invariant orders. By relating order preserving representations to weakly maximal representations, introduced in arXiv:1305.2620, we show that order preserving representations into Lie groups of Hermitian type are faithful with discrete image and that the set of order preserving representations is closed in the representation variety. For Lie groups of Hermitian type whose associated symmetric space is of tube type we give a geometric characterization of these representations in terms of the causal structure on the Shilov boundary.

On weakly maximal representations of surface groups

We introduce and study a new class of representations of surface groups into Lie groups of Hermitian type, called {\em weakly maximal} representations. We prove that weakly maximal representations are discrete and injective and we describe the structure of the Zariski closure of their image. Furthermore we prove that the set of weakly maximal representations is a closed subset of the representation variety and describe its relation to other geometrically significant subsets of the representation variety.

Compactification of certain Clifford-Klein forms of reductive homogeneous spaces

We describe smooth compactifications of certain families of reductive homogeneous spaces such as group manifolds for classical Lie groups, or pseudo-Riemannian analogues of real hyperbolic spaces and their complex and quaternionic counterparts. We deduce compactifications of Clifford-Klein forms of these homogeneous spaces, namely quotients by discrete groups Gamma acting properly discontinuously, in the case that Gamma is word hyperbolic and acts via an Anosov representation. In particular, these Clifford-Klein forms are topologically tame.

Tameness of Riemannian locally symmetric spaces arising from Anosov representations

We construct compactifications of Riemannian locally symmetric spaces arising as quotients by Anosov representations. These compactifications are modeled on generalized Satake compactifications and, in certain cases, on maximal Satake compactifications. We deduce that these Riemannian locally symmetric spaces are topologically tame, i.e. homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold with boundary. We also construct domains of discontinuity (not necessarily with a compact quotient) in a much more general setting.

Limits of geometries

A geometric transition is a continuous path of geometric structures that changes type, meaning that the model geometry, i.e. the homogeneous space on which the structures are modeled, abruptly changes. In order to rigorously study transitions, one must define a notion of geometric limit at the level of homogeneous spaces, describing the basic process by which one homogeneous geometry may transform into another. We develop a general framework to describe transitions in the context that both geometries involved are represented as sub-geometries of a larger ambient geometry. Specializing to the setting of real projective geometry, we classify the geometric limits of any sub-geometry whose structure group is a symmetric subgroup of the projective general linear group. As an application, we classify all limits of three-dimensional hyperbolic geometry inside of projective geometry, finding Euclidean, Nil, and Sol geometry among the limits. We prove, however, that the other Thurston geometries, in particular $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{SL}_2 \mathbb{R}}$, do not embed in any limit of hyperbolic geometry in this sense.

Anosov representations: Domains of discontinuity and applications

The notion of Anosov representations has been introduced by Labourie in his study of the Hitchin component for SL(n,R). Subsequently, Anosov representations have been studied mainly for surface groups, in particular in the context of higher Teichmueller spaces, and for lattices in SO(1,n). In this article we extend the notion of Anosov representations to representations of arbitrary word hyperbolic groups and start the systematic study of their geometric properties. In particular, given an Anosov representation of $Γ$ into G we explicitly construct open subsets of compact G-spaces, on which $Γ$ acts properly discontinuously and with compact quotient. As a consequence we show that higher Teichmueller spaces parametrize locally homogeneous geometric structures on compact manifolds. We also obtain applications regarding (non-standard) compact Clifford-Klein forms and compactifications of locally symmetric spaces of infinite volume.

Higher Teichmüller Spaces: from SL(2,R) to other Lie groups

The first part of this paper surveys several characterizations of Teichmüller space as a subset of the space of representation of the fundamental group of a surface into PSL(2,R). Special emphasis is put on (bounded) cohomological invariants which generalize when PSL(2,R) is replaced by a Lie group of Hermitian type. The second part discusses underlying structures of the two families of higher Teichmüller spaces, namely the space of maximal representations for Lie groups of Hermitian type and the space of Hitchin representations or positive representations for split real simple Lie groups.

Weakly maximal representations of surface groups

We introduce and study a new class of representations of surface groups into Lie groups of Hermitian type, called weakly maximal representations. They are defined in terms of invariants in bounded cohomology and extend considerably the scope of maximal representations. We prove that weakly maximal representations are discrete and injective and describe the structure of the Zariski closure of the image. An interesting feature of these representations is that they admit an elementary topological characterization in terms of bi-invariant orderings. In particular if the target group is Hermitian of tube type, the ordering can be described in terms of the causal structure on the Shilov boundary.
