Anisotropic exchange coupling and ground state phase diagram of Kitaev compound YbOCl

Rare-earth chalcohalide REChX (RE = rare earth; Ch = O, S, Se, Te; X = F, Cl, Br, I) is a newly reported family of Kitaev spin liquid candidates. The family offers a platform where a strong spin-orbit coupling meets a van der Waals layered and undistorted honeycomb spin lattice, which outputs highly anisotropic exchange couplings required by the Kitaev model. YbOCl is the first single crystal of the family we grew, with a size up to ~ 15 mm. We have performed magnetization and high magnetic field electron spin resonance measurements from 2 to 300 K. We develop the mean-field scenario for the anisotropic spin system, with which we are able to well describe the experiments and reliably determine the fundamental parameters. The self-consistent simulations give the anisotropic spin-exchange interactions of $J_{\pm}$ (~ -0.3 K) and $J_{zz}$ (~ 1.6 K), and g factors of $g_{ab}$ (~ 3.4) and $g_{c}$ (~ 2.9). Based on the spin-exchange interactions, we employ the exact diagonalization method to work out the ground state phase diagram of YbOCl in terms of the off-diagonal exchange couplings. The phase diagram hosting rich magnetic phases including the spin-disordered one, sheds light on the novel magnetic properties of the family, particularly the Kitaev physics.

Low-energy Spin Dynamics of Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate $NaYbSe_{2}$

The family of rare earth chalcogenides $ARECh_{2}$ (A = alkali or monovalent ions, RE = rare earth, and Ch = O, S, Se, and Te) appears as an inspiring playground for studying quantum spin liquids (QSL). The crucial low-energy spin dynamics remain to be uncovered. By employing muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and zero-field (ZF) AC susceptibility down to 50 mK, we are able to identify the gapless QSL in $NaYbSe_{2}$, a representative member with an effective spin-1/2, and explore its unusual spin dynamics. The ZF $μ$SR experiments unambiguously rule out spin ordering or freezing in $NaYbSe_{2}$ down to 50 mK, two orders of magnitude smaller than the exchange coupling energies. The spin relaxation rate, $λ$, approaches a constant below 0.3 K, indicating finite spin excitations featured by a gapless QSL ground state. This is consistently supported by our AC susceptibility measurements. The careful analysis of the longitudinal field (LF) $μ$SR spectra reveals a strong spatial correlation and a temporal correlation in the spin-disordered ground state, highlighting the unique feature of spin entanglement in the QSL state. The observations allow us to establish an experimental H-T phase diagram. The study offers insight into the rich and exotic magnetism of the rare earth family.

Experimental identification of electric dipoles induced by magnetic monopoles in Tb2Ti2O7

The fundamental principles of electrodynamics allow an electron carrying both electric monopole (charge) and magnetic dipole (spin) but prohibit its magnetic counterpart. Recently it was predicted that the magnetic "monopoles" carrying emergent magnetic charges in spin ice systems can induce electric dipoles. The inspiring prediction offers a novel way to study magnetic monopole excitations and magnetoelectric coupling. However, no clear example has been identified up to now. Here, we report the experimental evidence for electric dipoles induced by magnetic monopoles in spin frustrated Tb2Ti2O7. The magnetic field applied to pyrochlore Tb2Ti2O7 along [111] direction, brings out a "3-in-1-out" magnetic monopole configuration, and then induces a subtle structural phase transition at Hc~2.3 T. The transition is evidenced by the non-linear phonon splitting under magnetic fields and the anomalous crystal-field excitations of Tb3+ ions. The observations consistently point to the displacement of the oxygen O" anions along [111] axis which gives rise to the formation of electric dipoles. The finding demonstrates that the scenario of magnetic monopole having both magnetic charge and electric dipole is realized in Tb2Ti2O7 and sheds light into the coupling between electricity and magnetism of magnetic monopoles in spin frustrated systems.

Raman scattering in transition metal dichalcogenides MTe2 (M = Mo, W)

We performed comparable polarized Raman scattering studies of MoTe2 and WTe2. By rotating crystals to tune the angle between the principal axis of the crystals and the polarization of the incident/scattered light, we obtained the angle dependence of the intensities for all the observed modes, which is perfectly consistent with careful symmetry analysis. Combining these results with first-principles calculations, we clearly identified the observed phonon modes in the different phases of both crystals. Fifteen Raman-active phonon modes (10Ag+5Bg) in the high-symmetry phase 1T'-MoTe2 (300 K) were well assigned, and all the symmetry-allowed Raman modes (11A1+6A2) in the low-symmetry phase Td-MoTe2 (10 K) and 12 Raman phonons (8A1+4A2) in Td-WTe2 were observed and identified. The present work provides basic information about the lattice dynamics in transition-metal dichalcogenides and may shed some light on the understanding of the extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) in this class of materials.

Anomalous valley polarization in monolayer MoSe2

Modern electronic devices heavily rely on the accurate control of charge and spin of electrons. The emergence of controllable valley degree of freedom brings new possibilities and presents a promising prospect towards valleytronics. Recently, valley excitation selected by chiral optical pumping has been observed in monolayer MoS2. In this work, we report polarized photoluminescence (PL) measurements for monolayer MoSe2, another member of the family of transition-metal-dichalcogenides (MX2), and observe drastic difference from the outcomes of MoS2. In particular, we identify a valley polarization (VP) up to 70% for B exciton, while that for A exciton is less than 3%. Besides, we also find a small but finite negative VP for A- trion. These results reveal several new intra- and inter-valley scattering processes which significantly affect valley polarization, hence provide new insights into exciton physics in monolayer MX2 and possible valleytronic applications.

Raman scattering in superconducting NdO1-xFxBiS2 crystals

The recently discovered layered BiS2-based superconductors have attracted a great deal of interest due to their structural similarity to cuprate and iron-pnictide superconductors. We have performed Raman scattering measurements on two superconducting crystals NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 (Tc = 4.5 K) and NdO0.7F0.3BiS2 (Tc = 4.8 K). The observed Raman phonon modes are assigned with the aid of first-principles calculations. The asymmetrical phonon mode around 118 cm-1 reveals a small electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling constant 0.16, which is insufficient to generate superconductivity at ~ 4.5 K. In the Raman spectra there exists a clear temperature-dependent hump around 100 cm-1, which can be well understood in term of inter-band vertical transitions around Fermi surface. The transitions get boosted when the particular rectangular-like Fermi surface meets band splitting caused by spin-orbit coupling. It enables a unique and quantitative insight into the band splitting.

Ultralow-frequency collective compression mode and strong interlayer coupling in multilayer black phosphorus

The recent renaissance of black phosphorus (BP) as a two-dimensional 2D layered material has generated tremendous interest in its tunable electronic band gap and highly anisotropic transport properties that offer new opportunities for device applications. Many of these outstanding properties are attributed to its unique structural characters that still need elucidation. Here we show Raman measurements that reveal an ultralow-frequency collective compression mode (CCM), which is unprecedented among similar 2D layered materials. This novel CCM indicates an unusually strong interlayer coupling in BP, which is quantitatively supported by a phonon frequency analysis and first-principles calculations. Moreover, the CCM and another branch of low-frequency Raman modes shift sensitively with changing number of layers, allowing an accurate determination of the thickness up to tens of atomic layers, which is considerably higher than those previously achieved by using high-frequency Raman modes. These results offer fundamental insights and practical tools for exploring multilayer BP in new device applications.

Electronic Raman Scattering On Individual Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes

We report experimental measurements of electronic Raman scattering under resonant conditions by electrons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The inelastic Raman scattering at low frequency range reveals a single particle excitation feature and the dispersion of electronic structure around the center of Brillouin zone of a semiconducting SWNT (14, 13) is extracted.
