Relations between elliptic modular graphs

We consider certain elliptic modular graph functions that arise in the asymptotic expansion around the non--separating node of genus two string invariants that appear in the integrand of the $D^8 R^4$ interaction in the low momentum expansion of the four graviton amplitude in type II superstring theory. These elliptic modular graphs have links given by the Green function, as well its holomorphic and anti--holomorphic derivatives. Using appropriate auxiliary graphs at various intermediate stages of the analysis, we show that each graph can be expressed solely in terms of graphs with links given only by the Green function and not its derivatives. This results in a reduction in the number of basis elements in the space of elliptic modular graphs.

Zero mode of the Fourier series of some modular graphs from Poincare series

We consider specific linear combinations of two loop modular graph functions on the toroidal worldsheet with $2s$ links for $s=2, 3$ and $4$. In each case, it satisfies an eigenvalue equation with source terms involving $E_{2s}$ and $E_s^2$ only. On removing certain combinations of $E_{2s}$ and $E_s^2$ from it, we express the resulting expression as an absolutely convergent Poincare series. This is used to calculate the power behaved terms in the asymptotic expansion of the zero mode of the Fourier expansion of these graphs in a simple manner.

Transcendentality violation in type IIB string amplitudes

We analyze transcendentality for certain terms that arise in multiloop amplitudes in the low momentum expansion of the four graviton amplitude in type IIB string theory in ten dimensions, based on the constraints of supersymmetry and S--duality. This leads to several contributions that violate transcendentality beyond one loop at all orders in the low momentum expansion. We also perform a similar analysis for the five graviton amplitude, obtaining contributions that involve single--valued multiple zeta values beyond tree level.

Non--analytic terms from nested divergences in maximal supergravity

The $D^4\mathcal{R}^4$ and $D^6\mathcal{R}^4$ coefficient functions in the effective action of type II string theory compactified on $T^d$ contain terms of the form $\mathcal{E}_1 {\rm ln}g_d$ and $\mathcal{E}_2 ({\rm ln}g_d)^2$ in specific dimensions, where $g_d$ is the T--duality invariant string coupling, and $\mathcal{E}_1$ and $\mathcal{E}_2$ are U--duality invariant coefficient functions. We derive these non--analytic terms from nested ultraviolet divergences in two and three loop maximal supergravity. For the $D^4\mathcal{R}^4$ coupling, the contribution involves $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{R}^4} {\rm ln} g_d$, while for the $D^6\mathcal{R}^4$ coupling, it involves $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{R}^4} {\rm ln} g_d$, $\mathcal{E}_{D^2\mathcal{R}^4} ({\rm ln} g_d)^2$ and $\mathcal{E}_{D^4\mathcal{R}^4} {\rm ln} g_d$; where $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{R}^4}$, $\mathcal{E}_{D^2\mathcal{R}^4}$ and $\mathcal{E}_{D^4\mathcal{R}^4}$ are the $\mathcal{R}^4$, $D^2\mathcal{R}^4$ and $D^4\mathcal{R}^4$ coefficient functions respectively. The contribution from $\mathcal{E}_{D^2\mathcal{R}^4}$, the coefficient function of an amplitude that vanishes onshell, arises from a two loop nested subdivergence of the three loop amplitude.

Non-BPS interactions from the type II one loop four graviton amplitude

We obtain T--duality invariant second order differential equations satisfied by the $D^8\mathcal{R}^4$ and $D^{10} \mathcal{R}^4$ interactions from the low energy expansion of the one loop four graviton amplitude in toroidally compactified type II string theory. The eigenvalues of these equations are completely determined by the structure of the one loop integrands. Unlike the BPS interactions, these non--BPS interactions satisfy Poisson equations having source terms that receive contributions from both the bulk and boundary of the worldsheet moduli space. We explicitly solve these equations in nine dimensions.

Perturbative type II amplitudes for BPS interactions

We consider the perturbative contributions to the R^4, D^4 R^4 and D^6 R^4 interactions in toroidally compactified type II string theory. These BPS interactions do not receive perturbative contributions beyond genus three. We derive Poisson equations satisfied by these moduli dependent string amplitudes. These T--duality invariant equations have eigenvalues that are completely determined by the structure of the integrands of the multi--loop amplitudes. The source terms are given by boundary terms of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces corresponding to both separating and non--separating nodes. These are determined directly from the string amplitudes, as well as from the logarithmic divergences of maximal supergravity. We explicitly solve these Poisson equations in nine and eight dimensions.

Poisson equation for the Mercedes diagram in string theory at genus one

The Mercedes diagram has four trivalent vertices which are connected by six links such that they form the edges of a tetrahedron. This three loop Feynman diagram contributes to the D^{12} R^4 amplitude at genus one in type II string theory, where the vertices are the points of insertion of the graviton vertex operators, and the links are the scalar propagators on the toroidal worldsheet. We obtain a modular invariant Poisson equation satisfied by the Mercedes diagram, where the source terms involve one and two loop Feynman diagrams. We calculate its contribution to the D^{12} R^4 amplitude.

Poisson equation for the three loop ladder diagram in string theory at genus one

The three loop ladder diagram is a graph with six links and four cubic vertices that contributes to the D^{12} R^4 amplitude at genus one in type II string theory. The vertices represent the insertion points of vertex operators on the toroidal worldsheet and the links represent scalar Green functions connecting them. By using the properties of the Green function and manipulating the various expressions, we obtain a modular invariant Poisson equation satisfied by this diagram, with source terms involving one, two and three loop diagrams. Unlike the source terms in the Poisson equations for diagrams at lower orders in the momentum expansion or the Mercedes diagram, a particular source term involves a five point function containing a holomorphic and a antiholomorphic worldsheet derivative acting on different Green functions. We also obtain simple equalities between topologically distinct diagrams, and consider some elementary examples.

Proving relations between modular graph functions

We consider modular graph functions that arise in the low energy expansion of the four graviton amplitude in type II string theory. The vertices of these graphs are the positions of insertions of vertex operators on the toroidal worldsheet, while the links are the scalar Green functions connecting the vertices. Graphs with four and five links satisfy several non--trivial relations, which have been proved recently. We prove these relations by using elementary properties of Green functions and the details of the graphs. We also prove a relation between modular graph functions with six links.

Constraining non--BPS interactions from counterterms in three loop maximal supergravity

The structure of one, two and three loop counterterms imposes strong constraints on several non--BPS interactions in the low momentum expansion of the three loop four graviton amplitude in maximal supergravity. The constraints are imposed by demanding consistency with string amplitudes. We analyze these constraints imposed on the D^8 R^4 interaction in 11 dimensional supergravity compactified on T^2. We also discuss partial contributions from counterterms to interactions at higher orders in the momentum expansion.

Some finite terms from ladder diagrams in three and four loop maximal supergravity

We consider the finite part of the leading local interactions in the low energy expansion of the four graviton amplitude from the ladder skeleton diagrams in maximal supergravity on T^2, at three and four loops. At three loops, we express the D^8 R^4 and D^{10} R^4 amplitudes as integrals over the moduli space of an underlying auxiliary geometry. These amplitudes are evaluated exactly for special values of the the moduli of the auxiliary geometry, where the integrand simplifies. We also perform a similar analysis for the D^8 R^4 amplitude at four loops that arise from the ladder skeleton diagrams for a special value of a parameter in the moduli space of the auxiliary geometry. While the dependence of the amplitudes on the volume of the T^2 is very simple, the dependence on the complex structure of the T^2 is quite intricate. In some of the cases, the amplitude consists of terms each of which factorizes into a product of two SL(2,Z) invariant modular forms. While one of the factors is a non--holomorphic Eisenstein series, the other factor splits into a sum of modular forms each of which satisfies a Poisson equation on moduli space with source terms that are bilinear in the Eisenstein series. This leads to several possible perturbative contributions unto genus 5 in type II string theory on S^1. Unlike the one and two loop supergravity analysis, these amplitudes also receive non--perturbative contributions from bound states of three D--(anti)instantons in the IIB theory.

Constraining gravitational interactions in the M theory effective action

We consider purely gravitational interactions of the type D^{6n} R^4 in the effective action of M theory which are related to the type IIA interactions of the form e^{2nϕ_A} D^{6n} R^4 where ϕ_A is the type IIA dilaton. The coefficients of the M theory interactions are determined by the strongly coupled type IIA theory. Given the nature of the dilaton dependence, it is plausible that for low values of n, the coefficient has a similar structure as the genus (n+1) string amplitude of the type IIA D^{6n} R^4 interaction, namely the transcendental nature. Assuming this, and focussing on the even--even spin structure part of the type IIA string amplitude, this coefficient is given by the type IIB genus (n+1) amplitude, which we constrain using supersymmetry, S--duality and maximal supergravity. The source terms of the Poisson equations satisfied by the S--duality invariant IIB couplings play a central role in the analysis. This procedure yields partial contributions to several multi--loop type IIB string amplitudes, from which we extract the transcendental nature of the corresponding M theory couplings. For n \leq 2, all possible source terms involve only BPS couplings. While the R^4 and D^6 R^4 M theory couplings agree with known results, the coefficient of the D^{12} R^4 interaction takes the form ζ(2)^3 (Ω_1+Ω_2 ζ(3)). We also analyze the D^{18} R^4 and D^{24} R^4 interactions, and show that their coefficients have at least the terms ζ(2)^4 (\tildeΩ_1 +\tildeΩ_2ζ(3) +\tildeΩ_3ζ(5)) and ζ(2)^5 (\underlineΩ_1 +\underlineΩ_2ζ(3) +\underlineΩ_3ζ(5) + \underlineΩ_4ζ(3)^2 + \underlineΩ_5ζ(7) +\underlineΩ_6ζ(3) ζ(5) +\underlineΩ_7 ζ(3)^3) respectively. The various undetermined constants have vanishing transcendentality.

The D^6 R^4 term from three loop maximal supergravity

We consider the D^6 R^4 term which is the leading contribution in the low momentum expansion of the three loop, four graviton amplitude in maximal supergravity. We calculate the moduli dependent coefficient of this term in 11 dimensional supergravity compactified on T^2. Only diagrams that involve the Mercedes skeleton contribute resulting in a compact expression involving an integral over 6 Schwinger parameters. We express this integral as an integral over the moduli of an auxiliary T^3. This includes an SL(3,Z) invariant integral over the shape moduli of the T^3. We discuss the renormalization of the ultraviolet divergences of this amplitude that arise from the boundaries of moduli space. The renormalized amplitude is simple which is a consequence of the fact that the D^6 R^4 term is BPS.

The structure of the R^8 term in type IIB string theory

Based on the structure of the on-shell linearized superspace of type IIB supergravity, we argue that there is a non--BPS 16 derivative interaction in the effective action of type IIB string theory of the form (t_8 t_8 R^4)^2, which we call the R^8 interaction. It lies in the same supermultiplet as the G^8 R^4 interaction. Using the KLT relation, we analyse the structure of the tree level eight graviton scattering amplitude in the type IIB theory, which leads to the R^8 interaction at the linearized level. This involves an analysis of color ordered multi-gluon disc amplitudes in the type I theory, which shows an intricate pole structure and transcendentality consistent with various other interactions. Considerations of S-duality show that the R^8 interaction receives non-analytic contributions in the string coupling at one and two loops. Apart from receiving perturbative contributions, we show that the R^8 interaction receives a non-vanishing contribution in the one D-instanton-anti-instanton background at leading order in the weak coupling expansion.

Supersymmetry constraints on the R^4 multiplet in type IIB on T^2

We consider a class of eight derivative interactions in the effective action of type IIB string theory compactified on T^2. These 1/2 BPS interactions have moduli dependent couplings. We impose the constraints of supersymmetry to show that each of these couplings satisfy a first order differential equation on moduli space which relate it to other couplings in the same supermuliplet. These equations can be iterated to give second order differential equations for the various couplings. The couplings which only depend on the SO(2)\SL(2,R) moduli satisfy Laplace equation on moduli space, and are given by modular forms of SL(2,Z). On the other hand, the ones that only depend on the SO(3)\SL(3,R) moduli satisfy Poisson equation on moduli space, where the source terms are given by other couplings in the same supermultiplet. The couplings of the interactions which are charged under SU(2) are not automorphic forms of SL(3,Z). Among the interactions we consider, the R^4 coupling depends on all the moduli.

Constraining the D3-brane effective action

We consider higher derivative corrections of the type D^{2k} R^2 in the effective action of the D3-brane with trivial normal bundle. Based on the perturbative disc and annulus amplitudes, and constraints of supersymmetry and duality, we argue that these interactions are protected, at least for small values of k. Their coefficient functions receive only a finite number of perturbative contributions, and non-perturbative contributions from D-instantons. We propose expressions for these modular forms for low values of k.

Recursion Relations from Space-time Supersymmetry

We describe a method for obtaining relations between higher derivative interactions in supersymmetric effective actions. The method extends to all orders in the momentum expansion. As an application, we consider the string coupling dependence of the \hat{G}^{2k} λ^{16} interaction in type IIB string theory. Using supersymmetry, we show that each of these interactions satisfies a Poisson equation on the moduli space with sources determined by lower momentum interactions. We argue that these protected couplings are only renormalized by a finite number of string loops together with non-perturbative terms. Finally, we explore some consequences of the Poisson equation for low values of k.

The M2-M5 Brane System and a Generalized Nahm's Equation

We propose an equation that describes M2-branes ending on M5-branes, and which generalizes the description of the D1-D3 system via Nahm's equation. The simplest solution to this equation constructs the transverse geometry in terms of a fuzzy three sphere. We show that the solution passes a number of consistency checks including a consistent reduction to the D1-D3 system, a calculation of the energy of the system, matching to the self-dual string solution in the M5-brane world volume, and a study of simple fluctuations about the ground state configuration. We write down certain terms in the effective action of multiple membranes, which includes a sextic scalar coupling.

(0,2) Duality

We construct dual descriptions of (0,2) gauged linear sigma models. In some cases, the dual is a (0,2) Landau-Ginzburg theory, while in other cases, it is a non-linear sigma model. The duality map defines an analogue of mirror symmetry for (0,2) theories. Using the dual description, we determine the instanton corrected chiral ring for some illustrative examples. This ring defines a (0,2) generalization of the quantum cohomology ring of (2,2) theories.
