Stability of topological solitons, and black string to bubble transition

We study the existence of smooth topological solitons and black strings as locally-stable saddles of the Euclidean gravitational action of five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. These objects live in the Kaluza-Klein background of four dimensional Minkowski with an $S^1$. We compute the off-shell gravitational action in the canonical ensemble with fixed boundary data corresponding to the asymptotic radius of $S^1$, and to the electric and magnetic charges that label the solitons and black strings. We show that these objects are locally-stable in large sectors of the phase space with varying lifetime. Furthermore, we determine the globally-stable phases for different regimes of the boundary data, and show that there can be Hawking-Page transitions between the locally-stable phases of the topological solitons and black strings. This analysis demonstrates the existence of a large family of globally-stable smooth solitonic objects in gravity beyond supersymmetry, and presents a mechanism through which they can arise from the black strings.

't Hooft Defects and Wall Crossing in SQM

In this paper we study the contribution of monopole bubbling to the expectation value of supersymmetric 't Hooft defects in Lagrangian theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ on $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$. This can be understood as the Witten index of an SQM living on the world volume of the 't Hooft defect that couples to the bulk 4D theory. The computation of this Witten index has many subtleties originating from a continuous spectrum of scattering states along the non-compact vacuum branches. We find that even after properly dealing with the spectral asymmetry, the standard localization result for the 't Hooft defect does not agree with the result obtained from the AGT correspondence. In this paper we will explicitly show that one must correct the localization result by adding an extra term to the standard Jeffrey-Kirwan residue formula. This extra term accounts for the contribution of ground states localized along the non-compact branches. This extra term restores both the expected symmetry properties of the line defect expectation value and reproduces the results derived using the AGT correspondence.

Hyperkahler Sigma Model and Field Theory on Gibbons-Hawking Spaces

We describe a novel deformation of the 3-dimensional sigma model with hyperkähler target, which arises naturally from the compactification of a 4-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theory on a hyperkähler circle bundle (Gibbons-Hawking space). We derive the condition for which the deformed sigma model preserves 4 out of the 8 supercharges. We also study the contribution from a NUT center to the sigma model path integral, and find that supersymmetry implies it is a holomorphic section of a certain holomorphic line bundle over the hyperkähler target. We study explicitly the case where the original 4-dimensional theory is pure $U(1)$ super Yang-Mills, and show that the contribution from a NUT center in this case is simply the Jacobi theta function.

Mirror Symmetry in Flavored Affine D-type Quivers

We present non-trivial checks of three dimensional mirror symmetry for $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\hat{D}_N$ quiver gauge theories with unitary gauge groups using partition function on a round sphere. Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) realization of these theories and their mirror duals (as world volume gauge theories on coincident D3 branes) involve 1/2-BPS boundary conditions associated with orbifold and orientifold 5-planes respectively, in addition to NS5 and D5 branes. We demonstrate that partition function for a given quiver in this class may be decomposed into distinct contributions from the aforementioned Type IIB ingredients. As a byproduct of this computation, we find a convenient way of deriving the mirror map for a given pair of dual theories.

Mirror Symmetry in Three Dimensions via Gauged Linear Quivers

Starting from mirror pairs consisting only of linear (framed A-type) quivers, we demonstrate that a wide class of three-dimensional quiver gauge theories with N=4 supersymmetry and their mirror duals can be obtained by suitably gauging flavor symmetries. Infinite families of mirror pairs including various quivers of D and E-type and their affine extensions, star-shaped quivers, and quivers with symplectic gauge groups may be generated in this fashion. We present two different computational strategies to perform the aforementioned gauging procedure - one of them involves N=2* classical parameter space description, while the other one uses partition functions of the N=4 theories on S^3. The partition function, in particular, turns out to be an extremely efficient tool for implementing this gauging procedure as it readily generalizes to arbitrary size of the quiver and arbitrary rank of the gauge group at each node. For most examples of mirror pairs obtained via this procedure, we perform additional checks of mirror symmetry using the Hilbert series.

Omega-deformed SYM on a Gibbons-Hawking Space

We study an $\mathcal{N}=2$, pure $U(1)$ SYM theory on a Gibbons-Hawking space $Ω$-deformed using the $U(1)$ isometry. The resultant 3D theory, after an appropriate "Nekrasov-Witten" change of variables, is asymptotically equivalent to the undeformed theory at spatial infinity but differs from it as one approaches the NUT centers which are fixed points under the $U(1)$ action. The 3D theory may be recast in the form of a generalized hyperkähler sigma model introduced in \cite{Dey:2014lja} where the target space is a one-parameter family of hyperkähler spaces. The hyperkähler fibers have a preferred complex structure which for the deformed theory depends on the parameter of $Ω$-deformation. The metric on the hyperkähler fiber can be reduced to a standard metric on $\mathbb{C} \times T^2$ with the modular parameter of the torus depending explicitly on the $Ω$-deformation parameter. The contribution of the NUT center to the sigma model path integral, expected to be a holomorphic section of a holomorphic line bundle over the target space on grounds of supersymmetry, turns out to be a Jacobi theta function in terms of certain "deformed" variables.

Power Spectrum and Non-Gaussianities in Anisotropic Inflation

We study the planar regime of curvature perturbations for single field inflationary models in an axially symmetric Bianchi I background. In a theory with standard scalar field action, the power spectrum for such modes has a pole as the planarity parameter goes to zero. We show that constraints from back reaction lead to a strong lower bound on the planarity parameter for high-momentum planar modes and use this bound to calculate the signal-to-noise ratio of the anisotropic power spectrum in the CMB, which in turn places an upper bound on the Hubble scale during inflation allowed in our model. We find that non-Gaussianities for these planar modes are enhanced for the flattened triangle and the squeezed triangle configurations, but show that the estimated values of the f_NL parameters remain well below the experimental bounds from the CMB for generic planar modes (other, more promising signatures are also discussed). For a standard action, f_NL from the squeezed configuration turns out to be larger compared to that from the flattened triangle configuration in the planar regime. However, in a theory with higher derivative operators, non-Gaussianities from the flattened triangle can become larger than the squeezed configuration in a certain limit of the planarity parameter.

Hilbert Series for Moduli Spaces of Instantons on C^2/Z_n

We study chiral gauge-invariant operators on moduli spaces of G instantons for any classical group G on A-type ALE spaces using Hilbert Series (HS). Moduli spaces of instantons on an ALE space can be realized as Higgs branches of certain quiver gauge theories which appear as world-volume theories on Dp branes in a Dp-D(p+4) system with the D(p+4) branes (with or without O(p+4) planes) wrapping the ALE space. We study in detail a list of quiver gauge theories which are related to G-instantons of arbitrary ranks and instanton numbers on a generic A_{n-1} ALE space and discuss the corresponding brane configurations. For a large class of theories, we explicitly compute the Higgs branch HS which reveals various algebraic/geometric aspects of the moduli space such as the dimension of the space, generators of the moduli space and relations connecting them. In a large number of examples involving lower rank instantons, we demonstrate that HS for equivalent instantons of isomorphic gauge groups but very different quiver descriptions do indeed agree, as expected.

Three Dimensional Mirror Symmetry and Partition Function on $S^3$

We provide non-trivial checks of $\mathcal{N}=4, D=3$ mirror symmetry in a large class of quiver gauge theories whose Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) descriptions involve D3 branes ending on orbifold/orientifold 5-planes at the boundary. From the M-theory perspective, such theories can be understood in terms of coincident M2 branes sitting at the origin of a product of an A-type and a D-type ALE (Asymtotically Locally Euclidean) space with G-fluxes. Families of mirror dual pairs, which arise in this fashion, can be labeled as $(A_{m-1},D_n)$, where $m$ and $n$ are integers. For a large subset of such infinite families of dual theories, corresponding to generic values of $n\geq 4$, arbitrary ranks of the gauge groups and varying $m$, we test the conjectured duality by proving the precise equality of the $S^3$ partition functions for dual gauge theories in the IR as functions of masses and FI parameters. The mirror map for a given pair of mirror dual theories can be read off at the end of this computation and we explicitly present these for the aforementioned examples. The computation uses non-trivial identities of hyperbolic functions including certain generalizations of Cauchy determinant identity and Schur's Pfaffian identity, which are discussed in the paper.

Non-Gaussianities in the Cosmological Perturbation Spectrum due to Primordial Anisotropy

We investigate possible signatures of a pre-inflationary anisotropic phase in two-point and three-point correlation functions of the curvature perturbation for high-momentum modes which exit the horizon after isotropization. In this momentum regime, the early time dynamics admits a WKB description and the late time dynamics can be described in terms of a non-Bunch Davies vacuum state which encodes the information of initial anisotropy in the background spacetime. We compute the bi-spectrum for curvature perturbation in a canonical single-field action with and without higher derivative operators. We show that the bi-spectrum at late times, in either case, is enhanced for a flattened triangle configuration as well as a squeezed triangle configuration and compute the corresponding $f_{NL}$ parameters. The angular dependence and the particular momentum dependence of the $f_{NL}$ parameter appear as distinctive features of background anisotropy at early times.

Non-Gaussianities in the Cosmological Perturbation Spectrum due to Primordial Anisotropy II

We continue to investigate possible signatures of a pre-inflationary anisotropic phase in two-point and three point correlation functions of the curvature perturbation for high-momentum modes which exit the horizon well after isotropization. The late time dynamics of these modes is characterized by a non-Bunch Davies vacuum state which encodes all the information about initial anisotropy in the background space-time. We observe that, unlike the non-planar momenta, there exist regimes of planar momenta for which scale invariance of the power spectrum is strongly broken. This regime of planar momenta gives rise to enhanced non-Gaussianity in certain squeezed triangle configurations, although the enhancement of the $f_{NL}$ parameter is limited by the breakdown of linear perturbation theory at "exact planarity". Finally, we demonstrate that for the range of planar modes for which scale invariance of the power spectrum is preserved, non-Gaussianity in the curvature perturbation spectrum is naturally constrained to be extremely small.

On Three-Dimensional Mirror Symmetry

Mirror Symmetry for a large class of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories has a natural explanation in terms of M-theory compactified on a product of $\text{ALE}$ spaces. A pair of such mirror duals can be described as two different deformations of the eleven-dimensional supergravity background $\mathcal{M}=\mathbb{R}^{2,1} \times \text{ALE}_{1} \times \text{ALE}_{2}$, to which they flow in the deep IR. Using the $A-D-E$ classification of $\text{ALE}$ spaces, we present a neat way to catalogue dual quiver gauge theories that arise in this fashion. In addition to the well-known examples studied in \cite{Intriligator:1996ex}, \cite{deBoer:1996mp}, this procedure leads to new sets of dual theories. For a certain subset of dual theories which arise from the aforementioned M-theory background with an $A$-type $\text{ALE}_{1}$ and a $D$-type $\text{ALE}_2$, we verify the duality explicitly by a computation of partition functions of the theories on $S^3$, using localization techniques . We derive the relevant mirror map and discuss its agreement with predictions from the Type IIB brane construction for these theories.
