Inducing and controlling magnetism in the honeycomb lattice through harmonic trapping potential

We study strongly interacting ultracold spin-1/2 fermions in a honeycomb lattice in the presence of a harmonic trap. Tuning the strength of the harmonic trap we show that it is possible to confine the fermions in artificial structures reminiscent of graphene nanoflakes in solid state. The confinement on small structures induces magnetic effects which are absent in a large graphene sheet. Increasing the strength of the harmonic potential we are able to induce different magnetic states, such as a Néel-like antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic states, as well as mixtures of these basic states. The realization of different magnetic patterns is associated with the terminations of the artificial structures, in turn controlled by the confining potential.

Single-boson exchange decomposition of the vertex function

We present a decomposition of the two-particle vertex function of the single-band Anderson impurity model which imparts a physical interpretation of the vertex in terms of the exchange of bosons of three flavors. We evaluate the various components of the vertex for an impurity model corresponding to the half-filled Hubbard model within dynamical mean-field theory. For small values of the interaction almost the entire information encoded in the vertex function corresponds to single-boson exchange processes, which can be represented in terms of the Hedin three-leg vertex and the screened interaction. Also for larger interaction, the single-boson exchange still captures scatterings between electrons and the dominant low-energy fluctuations and provides a unified description of the vertex asymptotics. The proposed decomposition of the vertex does not require the matrix inversion of the Bethe-Salpeter equation. Therefore, it represents a computationally lighter and hence more practical alternative to the parquet decomposition.

Parquet-like equations for the Hedin three-leg vertex

Taking the competition and the mutual screening of various bosonic fluctuations in correlated electron systems into account requires an unbiased approach to the many-body problem. One such approach is the self-consistent solution of the parquet equations, whose numerical treatment in lattice systems is however prohibitively expensive. In a recent article it was shown that there exists an alternative to the parquet decomposition of the four-point vertex function, which classifies the vertex diagrams according to the principle of single-boson exchange (SBE) [F. Krien, A. Valli, and M. Capone, arXiv:1907.03581 (2019)]. Here we show that the SBE decomposition leads to a closed set of equations for the Hedin three-leg vertex, the polarization, and the electronic self-energy, which sums self-consistently the diagrams of the Maki-Thompson type. This circumvents the calculation of four-point vertex functions and the inversion of the Bethe-Salpeter equations, which are the two major bottlenecks of the parquet equations. The convergence of the calculation scheme starting from a fully irreducible vertex is demonstrated for the Anderson impurity model.

Local Electronic Correlation at the Two-Particle Level

Electronic correlated systems are often well described by dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). While DMFT studies have mainly focused hitherto on one-particle properties, valuable information is also enclosed into local two-particle Green's functions and vertices. They represent the main ingredient to compute momentum-dependent response functions at the DMFT level and to treat non-local spatial correlations at all length scales by means of diagrammatic extensions of DMFT. The aim of this paper is to present a DMFT analysis of the local reducible and irreducible two-particle vertex functions for the Hubbard model in the context of an unified diagrammatic formalism. An interpretation of the observed frequency structures is also given in terms of perturbation theory, of the comparison with the atomic limit, and of the mapping onto the attractive Hubbard model.

Dynamical vertex approximation for nanoscopic systems

With an increasing complexity of nanoscopic systems and the modeling thereof, new theoretical tools are needed for a reliable calculation of complex systems with strong electronic correlations. To this end, we propose a new approach based on the recently introduced dynamical vertex approximation. We demonstrate its reliability already on the one-particle vertex (i.e., dynamical mean field theory) level by comparison with the exact solution. Modeling a quantum point contact with 110 atoms, we show that the contact becomes insulating already before entering the tunneling regime due to a local Mott-Hubbard transition occurring on the atoms which form the point contact.

On the possible secondary component of the order parameter observed in London penetration depth measurements

We discuss the effect of a secondary component of the superconducting order parameter on the superfluid density in the cuprates. If we assume a main $d_{x^2-y^2}$ gap, the most stable realization of a mixed order parameter has a time-reversal breaking $d_{x^2-y^2}+ \imath d_{xy}$ symmetry. In this state the nodes are removed and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density changes from the linear behavior of a pure d-wave to a more rounded shape at low temperature. The latter is compatible with the behavior experimentally observed in the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth of optimally doped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_2$ and $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ}$.
