From Ramsey degrees to Ramsey expansions via weak amalgamation

Under no additional assumptions, in this paper we construct a Ramsey expansion for every category of finite objects with finite small Ramsey degrees. Our construction is based on the relationship between small Ramsey degrees, weak amalgamation and recent results about weak Fraïssé categories. Namely, generalizing the fact that every Ramsey class has amalgamation, we show that classes with finite Ramsey degrees have weak amalgamation. We then invoke the machinery of weak Fraïssé categories to perform the construction. This improves previous similar results where an analogous construction was carried out under the assumption that everything sits comfortably in a bigger class with enough infrastructure, and that in this wider context there is an ultrahomogeneous structure under whose umbrella the construction takes place.

Polish space partition principles and the Halpern-Läuchli theorem

The Halpern-Läuchli theorem, a combinatorial result about trees, admits an elegant proof due to Harrington using ideas from forcing. In an attempt to distill the combinatorial essence of this proof, we isolate various partition principles about products of perfect Polish spaces. These principles yield straightforward proofs of the Halpern-Läuchli theorem, and the same forcing from Harrington's proof can force their consistency. We also show that these principles are not ZFC theorems by showing that they put lower bounds on the size of the continuum.

Topological dynamics of Polish group extensions

We consider a short exact sequence $1\to H\to G\to K\to 1$ of Polish groups and consider what can be deduced about the dynamics of $G$ given information about the dynamics of $H$ and $K$. We prove that if the respective universal minimal flows $M(H)$ and $M(K)$ are metrizable, then so is $M(G)$. Furthermore, we show that if $M(H)$ and $M(K)$ are metrizable and both $H$ and $K$ are uniquely ergodic, then so is $G$. We then discuss several examples of these phenomena

Universal minimal flows of homeomorphism groups of high-dimensional manifolds are not metrizable

Answering a question of Uspenskij, we prove that if $X$ is a closed manifold of dimension $2$ or higher or the Hilbert cube, then the universal minimal flow of $\mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ is not metrizable. In dimension $3$ or higher, we also show that the minimal $\mathrm{Homeo}(X)$-flow consisting of all maximal, connected chains in $X$ has meager orbits.

Minimal model-universal flows for locally compact Polish groups

Let $G$ be a locally compact Polish group. A metrizable $G$-flow $Y$ is called model-universal if by considering the various invariant probability measures on $Y$, we can recover every free action of $G$ on a standard Lebesgue space up to isomorphism. Weiss has shown that for countable $G$, there exists a minimal, model-universal flow. In this paper, we extend this result to all locally compact Polish groups.

Amenability and Unique Ergodicity of Automorphism Groups of Fraïssé Structures

In this paper we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the amenability of the automorphism group of Fraïssé structures and apply it to prove the non-amenability of the automorphism groups of the directed graph $\mathbf{S}(3)$ and the Boron tree structure $\mathbf{T}$. Also, we provide a negative answer to the Unique Ergodicity-Generic Point problem of Angel-Kechris-Lyons [AKL]. By considering $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbf{V}_\infty)$, where $\mathbf{V}_\infty$ is the countably infinite dimensional vector space over a finite field $F_q$, we show that the unique invariant measure on the universal minimal flow of $\mathrm{GL}(\mathbf{V}_\infty)$ is not supported on the generic orbit.

Topological Dynamics of Closed Subgroups of $S_\infty$

For $G$ a closed subgroup of $S_{\infty}$, we provide an explicit characterization of the greatest $G$-ambit. Using this, we provide a precise characterization of when $G$ has metrizable universal minimal flow. In particular, each such instance fits into the framework of metrizable flows developed by Kechris-Pestov-Todorcevic and Nguyen Van Thé; as a consequence, each $G$ with metrizable universal minimal flow has the generic point property.
