Configuration spaces and multiple positive solutions to a singularly perturbed elliptic system

We consider a weakly coupled singularly perturbed variational elliptic system in a bounded smooth domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that, in the competitive regime, the number of fully nontrivial solutions with nonnegative components increases with the number of equations. Our proofs use a combination of four key elements: a convenient variational approach, the asymptotic behavior of solutions (concentration), the Lusternik-Schnirelman theory, and new estimates on the category of suitable configuration spaces.

Solutions to indefinite weakly coupled cooperative elliptic systems

We study the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_1 - κ_1u_1 = μ_1|u_1|^{p-2}u_1 + λα|u_1|^{α-2}|u_2|^βu_1, \\ -Δu_2 - κ_2u_2 = μ_2|u_2|^{p-2}u_2 + λβ|u_1|^α|u_2|^{β-2}u_2, \\ u_1,u_2\in D^{1,2}_0(Ω), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where ΩΩ is a bounded domain in RN\mathbb{R}^N, N≥3N\geq 3, κ1,κ2∈Rκ_1,κ_2\in\mathbb{R}, μ1,μ2,λ>0μ_1,μ_2,λ>0, α,β>1α,β>1, and α+β=p≤2∗:=2NN−2α+ β= p\le 2^*:=\frac{2N}{N-2}. For p∈(2,2∗)p\in (2,2^*) we establish the existence of a ground state and of a prescribed number of fully nontrivial solutions to this system for λλ sufficiently large. If p=2∗p=2^* and κ1,κ2>0κ_1,κ_2>0 we establish the existence of a ground state for λλ sufficiently large if, either N≥5N\ge5, or N=4N=4 and neither κ1κ_1 nor κ2κ_2 are Dirichlet eigenvalues of −Δ-Δ in ΩΩ.

Generalized Nehari manifold and semilinear Schrödinger equation with weak monotonicity condition on the nonlinear term

We study the Schrödinger equations −Δu+V(x)u=f(x,u)-Δu + V(x)u = f(x,u) in RN\mathbb{R}^N and −Δu−λu=f(x,u)-Δu - λu = f(x,u) in a bounded domain Ω⊂RNΩ\subset\mathbb{R}^N. We assume that ff is superlinear but of subcritical growth and u↦f(x,u)/∣u∣u\mapsto f(x,u)/|u| is nondecreasing. In RN\mathbb{R}^N we also assume that VV and ff are periodic in x1,…,xNx_1,\ldots,x_N. We show that these equations have a ground state and that there exist infinitely many solutions if ff is odd in uu. Our results generalize those in \cite{sw1} where u↦f(x,u)/∣u∣u\mapsto f(x,u)/|u| was assumed to be strictly increasing. This seemingly small change forces us to go beyond methods of smooth analysis.

A logarithmic Schrödinger equation with asymptotic conditions on the potential

In this paper we consider a class of logarithmic Schrödinger equations with a potential which may change sign. When the potential is coercive, we obtain infinitely many solutions by adapting some arguments of the Fountain theorem, and in the case of bounded potential we obtain a ground state solution, i.e. a nontrivial solution with least possible energy. The functional corresponding to the problem is the sum of a smooth and a convex lower semicontinuous term.

Ground states of critical and supercritical problems of Brezis-Nirenberg type

We study the existence of symmetric ground states to the supercritical problem −Δv=λv+∣v∣p−2v  in Ω,v=0 on ∂Ω, -Δv=λv+\left\vert v\right\vert ^{p-2}v\text{ \ in }Ω,\qquad v=0\text{ on }\partialΩ, in a domain of the form Ω={(y,z)∈Rk+1×RN−k−1:(∣y∣,z)∈Θ}, Ω=\{(y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^{k+1}\times\mathbb{R}^{N-k-1}:\left( \left\vert y\right\vert ,z\right) \inΘ\}, where ΘΘ is a bounded smooth domain such that Θ‾⊂(0,∞)×RN−k−1,\overlineΘ \subset\left( 0,\infty\right) \times\mathbb{R}^{N-k-1}, 1≤k≤N−3,1\leq k\leq N-3, λ∈R,λ\in\mathbb{R}, and p=2(N−k)N−k−2p=\frac{2(N-k)}{N-k-2} is the (k+1)(k+1)-st critical exponent. We show that symmetric ground states exist for λλ in some interval to the left of each symmetric eigenvalue, and that no symmetric ground states exist in some interval (−∞,λ∗)(-\infty,λ_{\ast}) with λ∗>0λ_{\ast}>0 if k≥2.k\geq2. Related to this question is the existence of ground states to the anisotropic critical problem −div(a(x)∇u)=λb(x)u+c(x)∣u∣2∗−2uin Θ,u=0on ∂Θ, -\text{div}(a(x)\nabla u)=λb(x)u+c(x)\left\vert u\right\vert ^{2^{\ast }-2}u\quad\text{in}\ Θ,\qquad u=0\quad\text{on}\ \partialΘ, where a,b,ca,b,c are positive continuous functions on Θ‾.\overlineΘ. We give a minimax characterization for the ground states of this problem, study the ground state energy level as a function of λ,λ, and obtain a bifurcation result for ground states.

Bifurcation from infinity for an asymptotically linear Schrödinger equation

We consider an asymptotically linear Schrödinger equation −Δu+V(x)u=λu+f(x,u), x∈RN-Δu + V(x)u = λu + f(x,u), \ x\in R^N, and show that if λ0λ_0 is an isolated eigenvalue for the linearization at infinity, then under some additional conditions there exists a sequence (un,λn)(u_n,λ_n) of solutions such that ∥un∥→∞\|u_n\|\to\infty and λn→λ0λ_n\toλ_0. Our results extend some recent work by Stuart. We use degree theory if the multiplicity of λ0λ_0 is odd and Morse theory (or more specifically, Gromoll-Meyer theory) if it is not.

A supercritical elliptic problem in a cylindrical shell

We consider the problem −Δu=∣u∣p−2uinΩ,u=0on∂Ω, -Δu=|u|^{p-2}u in Ω, u=0 on \partialΩ, where Ω:={(y,z)∈Rm+1×RN−m−1:0<a<∣y∣<b<∞}Ω:=\{(y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^{m+1}\times\mathbb{R}^{N-m-1}: 0<a<|y|<b<\infty\}, 0≤m≤N−10\leq m\leq N-1 and N≥2N\geq2. Let 2N,m∗:=2(N−m)/(N−m−2)2_{N,m}^{\ast}:=2(N-m)/(N-m-2) if m<N−2m<N-2 and 2N,m∗:=∞2_{N,m}^{\ast}:=\infty if m=N−2m=N-2 or N−1N-1. We show that 2N,m∗2_{N,m}^{\ast} is the true critical exponent for this problem, and that there exist nontrivial solutions if 2<p<2N,m∗2<p<2_{N,m}^{\ast} but there are no such solutions if p≥2N,m∗p\geq2_{N,m}^{\ast}.

A concentration phenomenon for semilinear elliptic equations

For a domain $Ω\subset\dR^N$ we consider the equation $ -Δu + V(x)u = Q_n(x)\abs{u}^{p-2}u$ with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions and p∈(2,2∗)p\in(2,2^*). Here V≥0V\ge 0 and QnQ_n are bounded functions that are positive in a region contained in ΩΩ and negative outside, and such that the sets {Qn>0}\{Q_n>0\} shrink to a point x0∈Ωx_0\inΩ as n→∞n\to\infty. We show that if unu_n is a nontrivial solution corresponding to QnQ_n, then the sequence (un)(u_n) concentrates at x0x_0 with respect to the H1H^1 and certain LqL^q-norms. We also show that if the sets {Qn>0}\{Q_n>0\} shrink to two points and unu_n are ground state solutions, then they concentrate at one of these points.

Multiple solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with singular electromagnetic potential

We consider the semilinear electromagnetic Schrödinger equation (-i\nabla+A(x))^{2}u + V(x)u = |u|^{2^{\ast}-2}u, u\in D_{A,0}^{1,2}(Ω,\mathbb{C}), where Ω=(Rm∖0)×RN−mΩ=(\mathbb{R}^{m}\smallsetminus{0})\times\mathbb{R}^{N-m} with 2≤m≤N2\leq m\leq N, N≥3N\geq3, 2∗:=2N/(N−2)2^{\ast}:= 2N/(N-2) is the critical Sobolev exponent, VV is a Hardy term and AA is a singular magnetic potential of a particular form which includes the Aharonov-Bohm potentials. Under some symmetry assumptions on AA we obtain multiplicity of solutions satisfying certain symmetry properties.
