Inequalities between remainders of quadratures

It is well-known that in the class of convex functions the (nonnegative) remainder of the Midpoint Rule of the approximate integration is majorized by the remainder of the Trapezoid Rule. Hence the approximation of the integral of the convex function by the Midpoint Rule is better than the analogous approximation by the Trapezoid Rule. Following this fact we examine remainders of certain quadratures in the classes of convex functions of higher orders. Our main results state that for 3-convex (5-convex, respectively) functions the remainder of the 2-point (3-point, respectively) Gauss quadrature is non-negative and it is not greater than the remainder of the Simpson's Rule (4-point Lobatto quadrature, respectively). We also check the 2-point Radau quadratures for 2-convex functions to demonstrate that similar results fail to hold for convex functions of even orders. We apply Peano Kernel Theorem as a~main tool of our considerations.

On the stability of the existence of fixed points for the projection-iterative methods with relaxation

We consider an $α$-relaxed projection $P_A^α:H\to H$ given by $P_A^α(x)=αP_A(x)+(1-α)x$ where $α\in[0,1]$ and $P_A$ is the projection onto a non-empty, convex and closed subset $A$ of the real Hilbert space $H$. We characterise all the sets $F\subset[0,1]$ such that for some non-empty, convex and closed subsets $A_1,A_2,\dots,A_k\subset H$ the composition $P_{A_k}^αP_{A_{k-1}}^α\dots P_{A_1}^α$ has a fixed point iff $α\in F$. It proves, that if $\dim H\geq 3$ and $k\geq3$ then the class of the derscribed above sets $F$ of coefficients $α$ is exactly the class of $F_σ$ subsets of $[0,1]$ containing $0$.

Sums of compositions of pairs of projections

We give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the possibility to represent a Hermitian operator on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space (real or complex) in the form $\sum_{i=1}^nQ_iP_i$, where $P_1,\dots,P_n$, $Q_1,\dots,Q_n$ are orthogonal projections. We show that the smallest number $n=n(c)$ admitting the representation $x=\sum_{i=1}^{n(c)}Q_iP_i$ for every $x=x^*$ with $\|x\|\leq c$ satisfies $8c+\frac83\leq n(c)\leq 8c+10$. This is a partial answer to the question asked by L. W. Marcoux in 2010.
