Nonlinear spectroscopy of excitonic states in transition metal dichalcogenides

Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a well-known nonlinear spectroscopy method to probe electronic structure, specifically, in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers. This work investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a strongly excited TMDC monolayer by solving the time evolution equations for the density matrix. It is shown that the presence of excitons qualitatively changes the nonlinear dynamics leading, in particular, to a huge enhancement of the nonlinear signal as a function of the dielectric environment. It is also shown that the SHG polarization angular diagram and its dependence on the driving strength are very sensitive to the type of exciton state. This sensitivity suggests that SHG spectroscopy is a convenient tool for analyzing the fine structure of excitonic states.

Strength of the Hubbard potential and its modification by breathing distortion in $\text{BaBiO}_{3}$

$\text{BaBiO}_{3}$ compound is known as an archetype example of a three-dimensional Holstein model with the realization of the charge density wave state at half-filling and the superconducting state when doped. Although many works are devoted to the study of the electron-phonon interaction in $\text{BaBiO}_{3}$, the influence of the electron-electron Hubbard interaction on the electronic structure in this system is still under quest. In our work, we obtain an analytical expression for the screened Coulomb potential, and along with the basis of \textit{ab initio}-computed maximally localized Wannier orbitals, we quantitatively estimate the magnitude of the effective on-site Hubbard potential scrutinizing the effects of distortion of the crystal lattice. We show that a proper inclusion of the electron-electron interactions into the Holstein model significantly lowers the value of the underlying electron-phonon coupling. Finally, we find that the amplitudes of the repulsive electron-electron potential and its attractive counterpart mediated by the electron-phonon coupling are rather comparable. This may open a way for a realization of the intermediate phase of $\text{BaBiO}_{3}$ in terms of the Holstein-Hubbard model.

Calculation of density of states of transition metals: from bulk sample to nanocluster

The technique is presented of restoring the electronic density of states of the valence band from data of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The originality of the technique consists in using a stochastic procedure to solve an integral equation relating the density of states and the experimental X-ray photoelectron spectra. The results are presented for bulk sample of gold and nanoclusters of tantalum; the possibility of using the results to determine the density of states of low-dimensional structures, including ensembles of metal nanoclusters, is demonstrated.

Momentum distribution and non-Fermi liquid behaviour in low-doped two-orbital model: finite-size cluster quantum Monte Carlo approach

The two-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model is studied with the use of finite-size cluster worldline quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. This model is widely used for simulation of the band structure of FeAs clusters, which are structure elements of Fe-based high-temperature superconductors. The choice of a special basis set of hyper-sites allowed to take into account four-fermion operator terms and to overcome partly the sign problem. Spectral functions and the density of states for various parameters of the model are obtained in the undoped and low-doped regimes. The correlated distortion of the spectral density with the change of doping is observed, and the applicability of the "hard-band" approximation in the doped regime is demonstrated. Profiles of the momentum distribution are obtained for the first Brillouin zone; they have pronounced jump near the Fermi level, which decreases with the growth of the strength of the interaction. The invariance of the Fermi surface with respect to the strength of the interaction is testified. Nesting is found in the case of electron and hole doping. Fermi-liquid parameters of the model are derived. Z-factor grows sharply with the increasing the level of doping, and monotonously decreases with the growth of the strength of the interaction. Moreover, electron-hole doping asymmetry of the Z-factor is revealed. The non-Fermi liquid behaviour and the deviation from Luttinger theorem are observed.
